More dumbing-down of education; now we're about to get affirmative action in student grades and student test scores:

Officials Step Up Enforcement of Rights Laws in Education
nytimes.com
By SAM DILLON

Seeking to step up enforcement of civil rights laws, the federal Department of Education says it will be sending letters in coming weeks to thousands of school districts and colleges, outlining their responsibilities on issues of fairness and equal opportunity.

As part of that effort, the department intends to open investigations known as compliance reviews in about 32 school districts nationwide, seeking to verify that students of both sexes and all races are getting equal access to college preparatory curriculums and to advanced placement courses. The department plans to open similar civil rights investigations at half a dozen colleges...

Republicans ought to be careful. If you blame the administration for all of the negative news over the last year in the economy, you are going to have to praise the administration when the inevitable swing happens. And it will inevitably swing.

Charles Krauthhammer is a very smart man.

This weekend I was shopping and the malls and stores in Richmond were packed. Republicans better be ready for the Bammy/media triumph parades when the economy ticks up a point.

6 On the census form what if we put in SIMIAN for race since that is what they taught us in school.

That can't end well--math is sexist and racist (possibly heteronormative).

(Do people need AP calculus and a $75,0000 Film Studies degree to work the front desk at the Holiday Inn by the interstate?)

Re sidebar story: Navy fires female captain of guided missile cruiser Cowpens for subjecting her crew to "cruelty and maltreatment". Navy has fired six commanding officers since the start of the year, triple the usual rate.

I could not believe that story.  Not that some woman had been promoted beyond her level of competence which has become common in the government and not even that a naval captain had turned into an ogre shades of Captain Queeg.  What I found unusual was that they publicly fired her and 5 others.  The Navy used to have ways of “fixing” these things that did not generate unwelcome publicity that invited ridicule.  In the old days she would have been relieved and a bad fitness report issued. (This officer is a competent female who sometimes shows bad judgment etc.)  She would be counseled that it would be to her benefit to resign instead of taking a job counting mess kits in Juneau, AK.

WTF does the Dept of Education have to do with civil rights?  Also, where in the Consitution does the federal government get any authority over education what-so-ever.

I just hope that a school system with balls is shit on somewhere and takes these clowns to court.

This is one thing that RR wanted that never came about, abolish the JC abortion known as the Dept of Education.

19 I contend that if the economy "swings" at all, it will be a dead cat bounce. The economic policies of this idiotic administration simply can't sustain any kind of reasonable recovery.

Charles Krauthhammer is a very smart man.

The only thing saving this economy is that Obama has FAILED on almost all of his policies.

As soon as Obama has any luck in raising taxes and permanently expanding the welfare state, then the chaos which ensues will make Jimmah Cahtah look like the Gipper.

OK, I am really mad at the Academy's excuse for not including Farrah Fawcett in the "In Memoriam" segment. The spokesperson said it wasn't an accident, they did it because she is more known for her television work.

BS. Logan's Run. Cannonball Run. For example. If you look on her IMDB bio I count at least 11 movies she's been in.

And yet they included Michael Jackson because he just had a "major theatrical release" umm, yeah of his concert footage.

I know, Hollywood, what did I expect. But, still. They should've stuck with the "omission" story.

I agree wholeheartedly. The John Hughes love fest was just as egregious. I liked his films but the guy didn't warrant that over some others. What happens when Spielberg kicks the bucket? They will have to give him a half hour on the Oscar telecast based on what they gave Hughes.

Uh....that's what the Founders wanted.  That's why they set up a Republic instead of a democracy--they knew if they let everyone vote directly, the majority could tyrannize the minority (kinda like the past 14 months...).

They even knew "universal sufferage" would lead to electing almost nothing but craven scum-sucking corrupt asswipes promising more and more free gubbament money to deadbeats...

34 Just a little reminder: don't get caught up in the partisan crap about Drudge and viruses. The security alerts are true, Drudge is a veritable petrie dish of malicious code, mostly from the advertising he allows on his site. Many of you who think Drudge has no ill effects on your computer are probably unknowingly infected with rootkits, which most AV software misses. To be fair, Drudge is not alone in this regard, but it is by far the most popular offender.

So true. it took the "progressives" of the early twentieth century to pass laws making sure everyone could vote as well as the 17th amendment to force voting for Senators on the States.

But, the lack of "universal sufferage" doesn't protect us from the "tyrany of the majority".  That was supposed to be done by the Consitution which defined the federal powers as limited and specific.

It took the appointment of all the liberals to SCOTUS by FDR to make the Constitution meaningless.  Irony is that they did it while hawking it as "more freedom" for the people.

Heather,

I get your point, however, the people elect representatives to vote based on how they would like, not for that person to vote how the individual sees fit. this quote is agruing for the person to vote against the wishes of his electorate, for some imagined greater good. Yes, the direct vote will lead to the tyrany of the majority, however, if we are sending people to congress to vote howevery they feel, what's the point of the party system?

We elect people expecting them to have the same basic principals as us, and vote in our interests, not to go do what every they feel like.

There's a very strong corrective that occurs if they go astray.
