March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Sale at U.S. retailers unexpectedly climbed in February as shoppers braved blizzards to get to the malls, signaling consumers will contribute more to economic growth.

Purchases increased 0.3 percent, the fourth gain in the past five months, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington.

Wait a minute. I thought that unemployment was up because of the snow. So people went out to shop in the blizzards but weren't hired or went to work because of the blizzards. Minitrue needs to get its stories straight.

It appears that the story of the hour is “Al Qaeda Suspect Worked at U.S. Nuclear Plants”. Oh the horror, we were minutes away from a catastrophic explosion meltdown and mass execution of millions of people living in and around NJ!  We must shut down all these evil power plants for the good of the country and make those evil power companies that built them pay all their evil profits to poor people in the name of social justice.

It always amazing me how the liberals come up with this shit.  The guy is a U.S. citizen who had not been in any serious trouble before (At least none is mentioned). He graduated from HS in 2002 and worked with a contracting company who provided services to power plants. He worked there from 2002 through part of 2008.

In 2008 he went overseas to Yemen to learn about Islam because he was a Muslim. Evidently he became “radicalized” as the press is want to put it now.

Since he evidently had no training or higher education after HS, it is most likely that he was hired for manual labor during outages, most likely on the secondary systems.  He would have passed all the security screening procedures, including FBI background checks at that time.

Yes I can hear the screams from liberals like Ed Markey about lack of security.  One wonders if they would scream louder if the Nuclear industry decided that ALL Muslims were “radicalized” and banned hiring Muslims.

3 Uh what I think when I read contracting company that provided services to the plant is janitor.

vic:  once cap 'n trade passes, we won't need nuclear plants.  we won't have electricity because there may be an environmental impact from its production.  so this Muslim can go back to praying towards Mecca.

further, we won't have an FBI because they probably need electricity to run all their computers.

you are worrying for nothing.

5 @1 They were buying pretty much anything they could get their hands on to stay warm, and fed. Sheeple will just think that they were out buying tv's and shit just because in their mind, shopping is the same as buying "stuff" of the none-essential kind.

6 So people went out to shop in the blizzards but weren't hired or went to work because of the blizzards.

I can actually believe that.  School canceled for snow/dangerous road conditions = malls are packed with teenagers.  And adults who called in "can't make it safely."

Uh what I think when I read contracting company that provided services to the plant is janitor.

Usually those are "permanent" contractors. From the news article I got the impression that he was moving between various plants, hence outage work.

I may be wrong though because that AP article had very little real info in it. (Normal)

LOL, that reminded me of a turd we had at work years ago on a big snow day. He called in that he couldn't make it out of the driveway.  Concidently the day of the snow was a payday. He called a coworker and had him bring his paycheck to the front gate and he drove in to get his check.

Of course everyone found out about it. He actually was pissed when management docked him a day's vacation for not coming in.

He thought by having a "bud" bring the check out he wouldn't get caught. They let him skate that time but he he screwed up again later on and got fired.

11 Oh, and here's some more scary totalitarian central-planning shit.

What is scary about that is there are people who actually think it is OK to do that. The EEOC should have been abolished long ago.

Given the depressing freak show in Washington, I think I found just the bizarre story to take my mind off forced health-care for a moment.

What you are seeing is a young Korean man who just married his pillow.

According to the UK publication, METRO, 28 year-old Lee Jin-Gyu married his ‘dakimakura’ – a kind of large, huggable pillow from Japan with a picture of a popular anime character named ”Fate Testarossa” printed on the front.

22 "... manufacturing, accounts for a slightly larger share of GDP today than it did in the allegedly golden days of the 1940s or 1950s."

Sure.  But the number of people with jobs in manufacturing is shrinking dramatically.  It's a story about automation, not offshoring like most people imagine.
