— Gabriel Malor Forgot about the Top Headlines yesterday. My bad.
Also, updated whip count will be out this evening. Some interesting news to whet your appetite, though. The NY Times is reporting that the President is focusing some effort on Dina Titus (NV-3), Betty Sutton (OH-13), Bob Etheridge (NC-2), and Mike McIntyre (NC-7).
You will note that Titus, Sutton, and Etheridge are not named in my whip count. That's because everyone had them in the 191 Dems "definitely on board." I guess not. McIntyre is on my list as "No Means No" and I've seen nothing to suggest that has changed.
The President and Nancy seem to lose one Democrat each day. That is, at least one each day for the past week has announced that they are voting against the bill. If that trend continues, Democrats will be two votes shy if the vote is taken on Saturday. But if the bill isn't going to pass, expect it to fail by more than just one or two votes. Dems are coming to this only reluctantly. If it's going to not pass, it's going to not pass by ten or twenty votes in the final roll call.
Folks I'm hearing are "no" votes who haven't stated it yet: Rick Boucher, Allen Boyd, Lincoln Davis.

As far as vehicles go, if you make a vehicle that can stand up to direct hits from high explosives, you have a tank. It's rather pointless, IMHO, to attempt to make these vehicles into something unsuitable for their job. Perhaps a change in strategy rather than a change in vehicle design might be considered.

Obama demanded last week that they have an up-or-down vote on health care. I agree. Have the damned vote RIGHT NOW so it can be defeated and we can move on.
He doesn't have the votes, but he's the one that demanded an up-or-down vote, so give it to him and defeat the damned thing in the House.

March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Senator Christopher Dodd unveiled legislation that empowers regulators to break up large financial firms, ban proprietary trading, and oversee hedge funds and derivatives, aiming to enact the most sweeping rules overhaul since the 1930s.
Well if they can't take over health care just regulate the hell out of the investment industry.

Yeah, the investment industry has done a bang up job, hasn't it. It would be a shame if Congress regulated it.

Blame it on the snow:
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. housing starts fell about 5.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 575,000 in February as several massive snow storms hit the East and South, according to data released Tuesday by the Commerce Department.
It's never Obama's fault.

Heh. 200 folks, but they were fainting!! That right there doubles or triples the actual count. Seriously though...it goes without saying, but I'm so sick of the Obama prop-people that stand up behind him. Can't the man just stand there and give his stupid speeches? He has to insist on surrounding himself with a backdrop of bleachers filled with people. Everything with him is an illusion. It's all imagery.

Isn't it "ironic" that one of the chief architects of the collapse is the one hawking even more (and unnecessary) regulation of the "investment industry".
In a sane world not only would he be laughed off the floor of the Senate but he would have long ago been prosecuted for corruption and thrown in jail. That is if he had not allready been tarred and feathered and given a free ride out of Washington on a fence rail.
Of course not a peep on this "irony" from our much vaunted free press.

There was some discussion about this in my local CT rag. As much as Dodd is despised, the class warfare rhetoric that's being pushed is much more appetizing to some.

I was wondering the other day why the people who stalk bankers at their homes and hold screamfests outside of banks--because they believe profit and corporations are evil and oppress "the people"--never say one word about the NCAA tournament. Huge corporate profits, and the workers at the center of it all aren't allowed to get paid. OK, some of them get a scholarship which they may or may not take advantage of to get an education (would be interesting to compare dollar value to hours worked, including practice, travel, and year-round conditioning/training), and a teeny fraction of them become very wealthy after leaving school (no different than the student body at large), but we still have a whole lot of fat white old guys making big bucks off of unpaid mostly black kids and their dreams, and not a peep out of ACORN or anyone.

You know Heather, I have often wondered if parts of the black community ARE saying something about this kind of crap and we just never hear about it because the media doesn't cover that side of the story.
The classic tree falling in the forrest syndrom.
Posted by: Vic at March 16, 2010 06:23 AM (QrA9E)
Age + college...isn't there a "development league" where they can go directly from high school for a year or two instead of the unpaid "student athlete" farce? I understand some of players really do go to class and accumulate enough credits to graduate, especially at the small schools, but the big names at the big schools dropping out after two years would really be better off getting paid a journeyman wage in a minor-league instead of wasting tuition dollars that could go to someone who actually wants a degree.
Not very free-market of me, but college tuition stopped being free-market when the government started guaranteeing student loans.

I think one of the liberal mags made a similar case against college football a few years ago. If I remember correctly the mag bemoaned the fact that only 40% of the college football players actually graduated.
They kicked and screamed right up until one of the major colleges hauled out the actual statistics for their graduation rate which showed that the rate for the football players was higher than the rest of the college in general. Was the liberal mag embarred with egg on its face? Hahaha, liberals are encapable of being embarrassed.
Still; if it was left up to me there would zero sports in high school or college. I would recommend that U.S. sports go the way of the European soccer leagues where each town forms its own team or teams.
As far as I am concerned the NCAA is a racket.
Posted by: Vic at March 16, 2010 07:32 AM (QrA9E)
I remember that, which is why I pointed out that some of the athletes really are students . But the ones who aren't--why is it OK to exploit them? Why aren't people who view themselves as champions of the oppressed doing something about kids who are being used? (Yeah, I know--same reason they don't care if you want your free gov't mortgage to house underage sex-slaves. There's big money for someone if everyone keeps their mouths shut.)
As for graduation rates in general, "going to college" is over-sold. That's a whole other rant. I also agree with you about high school sports. If anyone was serious about "education reform" that should be the first to go.

I am thoroughly enjoying the developing information that the San Diego "runaway Prius" story is fishy...
For those that don't know, it turns out that the "victim" is post-bankruptcy, and still deeply in debt, behind even on his Prius payments. Toyota engineers have been unable to reproduce the events as he describes them, and now the 911 recording has been released, with him telling the operator that he was too busy keeping his hands on the wheel and trying to avoid traffic to bother with shifting into neutral. Turns out, on his model of Prius, the gearshift is within reach even while your hands are on the wheel...

Yeah, that is one of my personal rants. I had my daughter in a priavte school through grammer school because the public schools here were so shitty. When it got to be time for her to go to the 7th grade the school shut down the grades above 6th.
When I asked why their response was that so many parents were pulling their kids and putting them back in the public school so they could have "football" and cheerleading that they didn't have enough students to support classes.
I just wanted to scream. Parents cared more about football than they did their kids.

The post I had for headlines yesterday
From the sidebar story: Adios to the Hummer. [ArthurK]
The next generation of U.S. battlefield truck will be the seven ton JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle), which replaces the 2.4 ton HMMWV. The hummer had itself replaced the 1.1 ton jeep and 3 ton M37 "3/4 ton" truck 25 years ago.
If I am not mistaken a few years ago the “experts” were bemoaning the fact that we could not get our troops into combat except at a glacial pace because the armored vehicles were so heavy they had to be shipped by oceangoing freighters which we had fewer and fewer of.
So what has changed now. Can we stand to make the “jeeps” more than twice as heavy? Another thing to keep in mind. All this Iraqi war “experience” with armoring Hummers is only going to result in more gearing up to fight the last war syndrome while ignoring the next war’s needs.
