That article re the AWD was interesting.  The comments following it not so useful, though.  I'm leaning toward a good AWD sedan for my next car.  I love my G35 coupe, but the RWD make it nearly useless as a backup car to my  main grocery getter / work ride for about 1/3 of the year.  Audi A6 Quatro looks nice, and perhaps even half-way affordable if a used one can be found.  Any other ideas?

8 True story — mid-’70s, Times Square. Tom Poston and Jerry Orbach are walking along with a reporter. A disheveled fellow approaches them and says, “I’m not going to lie to you, I need a drink.” Poston reaches into his pocket, pulls out a buck, extends it, then withdraws it briefly, saying, “How do I know you’re not going to spend this on food?”

9 It frickin' snowed again last night.  Damn it.  If, in addition to his other powers, Superman was in charge of snow, someone should go up to him and punch him and say "Stop that, Superman."

Even if the government weren't the owner, I think GM would not get much hassle over this one.  It doesn't sound like there's much of a safety issue, and so far there is no word of a cover up.

I agree that the government is probably going too far over the Toyota problem, but that's what they do.  The domestics have been raked over the coals in the past as well.  It's annoying, and sometimes unjust, but does have some utility.  During my 13 years of working in the auto industry, I've learned first hand that the big automakers, the OEMs an Tier Ones, hide shit all the time.  Only the fear of an even bigger organization (the government) beating them up keeps them even half-way honest.  The fear of losing long-term customer loyalty isn't really as big a concern for the bosses as you might think.  After all - they've all got their golden parachutes lined up already.

That article re the AWD was interesting.

My car with AWD performed FAR better than my car with 4WD during the lastest blizzard. I don't know if that's because of the drive or because it is significantly heavier. The AWD car is lower but bigger/heavier. It does have a gas addiction problem though. It also has the added benefit of the choice of non-clutch shifting so on a snowy road you can do your own shifting/driving in 1st, 2nd etc.

AWD is the way to go, would not buy a car without it. It's not only for snow but rain. It's usable at least 1/3 a year. Audi's are great cars, great build quality. My car is 6 years old and the paint looks like new. Great accident protection also.

45 I am personally enjoying making my teenager miserable by handing down to him a 96 ford windstar van. The deep shame may kill him but I think that it is building character. It runs. If he wants something less embarassing then he has to earn the money. This buying 16 year olds new cars which are not embarassing I find to be dispicable. What happens when they want/need a new car 10-15-20 years from now? They have to earn it. Besides, it's cheap to insure, the taxes are negligable, I'm not stressing about dings, and he is in something pretty big if he gets hit.

Didn't Barry say he was going to focus on jobs?

Did everyone who didn't have a job get one... while I was sleeping?

No more people on the verge of loosing their homes?  No more hungry children?

I know - I know... Rhetorical!

Mark my words.  Barry will not only go down in history as the most abjectly incompetent President in the history of this country, he will go down as the most indifferent, self centered jackasses ever to have drawn breath on this planet.  And this planet has been diminished for him.

That's such a bullshit non-story. Zero Hedge is OK in small doses, but they have this seriously stupid tendency to take a single data point and then leap to ridiculous conclusions from it. This is one of those times. All that video is, is just a clip from a TV documentary showing what goes on in a gold foundry, saying as an aside that now and then in the gold business they do see fakes. To Zero Hedge, that becomes proof of a massive conspiracy of some sort.

59 @57 They have some equipment to deal with it, dagny, but not as much as some places.  And, really, it wouldn't matter anyway.  The drivers here suck in a somewhat intense rainstorm.  Put snow on the ground and most of Atlanta drives like they've never been behind the wheel of a car before.  It's very frustrating.

Your son will grow to love his van. There's plenty of places to hide the weed and liquor, and with the seats removed or folded down, it is a sex parlor on wheels! On one drunken, post-coital moment, he will bless you for your inspired choice. Oh, and it is also good for transporting hobo corpses.

I'm in the same place with the driving to catholic high school plus football, wresting, and lacrosse. His having a car also keeps all that smelly boy shit out of my car and keeps me from gagging all the way home. Once after making weight for wrestling he wanted a triple classic from Wendy's ---the smell of than and stinky boy made me gag so hard I had to drive with my face out the window like a dog (a dog who drives anyway).

Curious, I have a similar story regarding a DVD player, and I had all the original packing except the styrofoam peanuts -- so the Chinese said NO. Thank God I had paid for the thing with a credit card on my USAA account. They contacted the retailer and said give her a refund or else.

Moral of story: buy everything Chinese and fallible on a credit card.

77 The Miami Herald reported that a 33-foot wall of water swept about five blocks into the Chilean coastal town of Constitucion.

Imagine that 33-foot wall of water smashing into Miami or Los Angeles. Such a massive wall of water could shut down the Port of Los Angeles or the Port of Miami. Sending our economy into a further tailspin. A tsunami could do what Al Qaeda wants to do.

I'm hearing more and more from citizens saying that the Obama administration has weakened the American economy that we Americans have to start thinking about ourselves, first.

Venezuela has one of the largest oil reserves in the Western Hemisphere. We don't hear of Hugo Chavez doing much to help the people of Haiti or Chile.

We Americans are starting to agree that we need to think about America first, rebuilding America before we can take care of our neighbors.

Liberals are people who want to spend Conservative's money. It's time we take care of OUR families and friends first. It's the American way.

Toyota is mean JAP company that wants to kill Yanks and guarantee that every single American has no job, ever!

GM is a a wholesome, American company with good, American Union workers that are just like you and me, and the only reason there's a recall is that they are concerned that something could happen that may hurt an American some day, which is something GM could never, ever let happen, so this recall only proves what a good, ethical company they are!

91 Two things, just caught on CNBC that this new cancer drug from DNDN is not going to an outside panel, per the FDA.  I realize there are people clamoring to get it but just because they screwed them over last time doesn't mean they have to abandon their usual protocol before approving a drug.  Fast tracking it is fine, I realize if it is the miracle drug they say it is that people want it but every time the FDA goes off the path, it doesn't work out.

97 per 103, my NY friends are upset as this means no LOST, no oscars, etc.  Ironically this has happened with cable vision before.  They had a tug of war with teh food channel and HGTV and oddly once it was settled the cable vision customers didn't got back to watching.  Maybe ABC should be aware of that.  ABC in NY is advertising that they will assist you in switching from cable vision so you can watch LOST and the Oscars.  My friends are complaining for two reasons, their bills are enormous for their cable compared to the rest of the country and they just recently got Fox Business News which they emailed about every day and they still do not have the DIY network.

110 curious,
just saw the video...
As far as I can tell Tungsten (W) is used because the density is a perfect match, and it looks from the video that the Au layer is 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. so a fake will look and feel like real Gold. X-ray should work but an individual cant do that. Drilling is good, but it is destructive.

Another way is to look for  creases in the casting. It would have to be poured in two steps to allow an insert and the two pours should leave a crease or at least a difference in surface appearance.

Posted by: curious at March 02, 2010 07:02 AM (p302b)

119 another point on gold,
For a Tungsten insert to work it would have to be  pretty big bar of gold. no one would do this for a one ounce or ten ounce bar. For those it is best to just see if the surface is soft. Gold is very soft metal and will give rounded edges and a lot of dings and dents every time it bangs something.

Lead would be too soft and anything else would be too hard. This is the basic "tooth" test you see old prospectors do in th movies....

50 I am personally enjoying making my teenager miserable by handing down to him a 96 ford windstar van.

Dagny, there's a better option:

1987 Buick Riviera, complete with Boat Fenders hanging off each side.

Why? Because US military restrictions won't let me buy a used M1A1 Abrahms tank for my 16 year old. THAT'S why! Because as a parent it's a safe presumption that your kid doesn't know how to drive until after they've had their first accident. That was true of my high school classmates. It was true of all my nieces and nephews. And it's true for my own kids today. After the first wreck and accident report, it's amazing how vigilent they suddenly become. Until then your only acceptable strategy is to get the largest boat you can find and wrap that sucker in bubble wrap before you let them out on the highway.

Also, I agree. You're not doing your kid any favors to provide them with a car, insurance or gas. I can provide those things. I let them earn them for themselves. It's called "self respect" and it comes with responsibility. Like paying for your own way.

What's this with buying any car for your high schooler?  My kids didn't get a car until they bought their own, when they were out of the house for a year and a half and had saved up the money.  While they were at home they got to drive the farm truck (and do errands while they were out), and there was always the bicycles...or the leather covered all terrain bipedal conveyance system (or they could pop for some gas and get a ride from their friends).

Yes, they had part time jobs all through high school too, but they didn't get to buy a car with it, because we told them up front we wouldn't help pop for mechanic work, tires, gas, or anything, so why not wait instead of blowing the money on a junker?

I'm proud to even have made it in.  Even prouder that those driving around me were on their toes.  Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way.  The streets are for the living.  Nothing worse than a block-long gap in the parade.  I want all lanes tightend up like NASCAR at Talladega.  Wake up and drive.  If I had any strength left would describe yesterday and taking the dogs to doggy day care.  How do people with kids do it?  I am so impressed.

As for AWD vehicles, love my SRX V8 AWD but the new ones are rebranded off other fine vehicles but not the CTS so can't speak for them.  Also, they're not as outright gorgeous as my '04.  The SRX makes one over-confident because of it's mountain goat sure-footedness.  When the line appears to be sending one into the ditch, apply a little accelerator, steer where you first intended and once again we're off to the races.

Even with the handling and the sometimes six month utility in this neck of the woods, still prefer four wheel drive for gas mileage purposes.  Use it when I need it and don't otherwise.  AWD sucks up the horsepower like there's no tomorrow.

My '03 Chevy Avalanche Z71 was amazing.  Nothing stopped it including three feet of snow.  Acceptable gas mileage and limousine comfort levels.

For all the vilification that goes on about the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil credit card companies, they're great to use to go to bat for you when you've gotten fucked by a company.  Case in point:  A little over a year ago I cracked up my car and the insurance provided a loaner through Hertz.  When I picked it up from Hertz the guy there told me that I should sign up for collision insurance on it through Hertz because my insurance wasn't covering it and if I bought it anything would be taken care of with no questions asked.  The guy seemed honest so I said ok.  After I eventually turned it in and was doing some paperwork with the insurance adjuster I mentioned it to him and he told me the guy had lied to me and I was completely covered.  I thought WTF and called up the branch and they gave me no satisfaction so I called up Hertz's national office where they also gave me the big yuck fou.  I was so fucking pissed by then that I called the credit card where I'd made the charge and told them what happened.  They opened a case on it and sent me a letter where I provided info and documentation to prove I had been covered.  End of problem.  I'm sure they have some in-house sharks that can shove those bogus charges up the company's asses without breaking a sweat.

172 re the SCOTUS and guns in Chicago, ""We have the right for health and safety to pass reasonable laws dealing with the protection and health of the people of the city of Chicago," Daley said."

An update from the shooting gallery known as Chicago.

A young mother wounded while holding her infant son.  She was waiting for the bus after school on her way home.  Also waiting for the bus were two members of the conservative vice lords.  A car full of gangster disciples pulled up to the stop and fired 5 rounds.  They only hit one target, the mother.  She took the bullet in the thigh.

Anonymous Chicago police officers also have blogs.  They say that they are under intense POLITICAL pressure to not arrest the known gang bangers even when they are congregating on public housing property(this gets the public housing property managers in license review situations).  They're vehicles are in disrepair which makes them less likely to pursue any fleeing suspects.

Two suspects were arrested in the shooting.  It occurred at 4:20PM.  The suspects WERE NOT charged with attempted murder.

This is Mayor Daley's Chicago petitioning the SCOTUS to protect the rights of government to fabricate and perpetuate dangerous environments where working mothers take gunfire from rival gangs.

I would have considered myself lucky to get a hand-me down car in HS. Our family had one car, a 1958 Ford.  There were a few folks in HS that had cars purchased for them by parents but they were all rich.

When I drive by the schools here now I see parking lots cramed full of cars.  Hell, the HS here has more cars parked in the parking lot than we had students in our HS.

And they say the economy is in the dumper.  It can't be too bad if every kid in town has his own car to drive to school.

Fubar -- oh, I'm not inconvenienced in the slightest...I make my kids walk or pedal everywhere they want to go (I never believed in that driving the kids like Ms. Daisy to school and whatnot...if it's 2 miles or less, walk; if over -- you have your bike, furthest you were going was 10 miles anyway, have fun).  Of course if it was something important like a dentist apppointment, I drove, but social stuff? work?  that's all under 5 miles away -- walk the dogs or pedal the bike, take your pick...unless you want the farm truck, in which case you pay the gas, and I need you to pick up 20 bales of hay -- hey, maybe your friends that you're hanging with can help you out with that).

We're mean parents.
