7 Way scary chart that shows the vast disparity between what was initially calculated for the cost of various medical programs and what the actual reality was in billions of dollars from Reason.  It makes the miscalulations of the MA state funded health care look like a downright bargain.  Medicaid and Medicare of course, were the absolute worst.   Here's the link.

So for all the democrats that are openly enjoying the pain and suffering of Conservatives today, you will enjoy this comment even more: my suffering today is amplified by the knowledge that those enjoying my pain will be in charge of my pain and suffering in the future.

I can't imagine that they will act more responsibly then. Let me guess: democrat districts get more healthcare funding than republican ones, right?

And goodbye 401Ks. 410Ks are to democrats what ANWR is to republicans; a resource waiting to be drilled.

From the "ah, poor baby" files:

No matter how you spin it, today is a huge loss for Progressives. We did not get Universal Health Care. We did get even a public option that would put us on equal footing with the private insurers.

No. The Democrats who we put into office handed us to every business interest, the pharmaceuticals, AMA, AHA, and even the insurance companies, anyone but the public who had a stake in the outcome got his pocket padded with the public's money.

From the comments of the Reason.com post linked in HA Headlines (data set of the day or something).

52 Filly,

In all seriousness and with all due respect (I've read your posts and like most of what you've written), will you stop with the HillBuzz nonsense?

As near as I could determine, looking into it in depth last election cycle, it is little more than a clever financial SCAM.

In other words, they feed you exactly what you want and hit you with the big "Donate" button, then they do NOTHING with your money of any value.

You'll never find out who is actually behind the site, and all of the supposed events they were organizing with their multitudes of donations last election cycle never materialized.

But they made money and what I believe is a scam continues.

You're just victimizing people by publicizing them. Direct attention to valid candidates and useful websites such as THIS one... including when it comes to donations.

I'm not saying this because I'm in the AoSHQ inner circle -- far from it.

I'm saying it because I believe it's true.

DONATE to the GOP, or here, or whatever, but don't be sucked in by the absolutely brilliant marketing scam at HillBuzz, which I absolutely think should be investigated by the FBI.

When AoSHQ has an event, you know what? It actually happens.

HillBuzz? Not so much.

O Violet...when I was stationed in England, one day when I was dropping off my rent (paid in cash to the old codger), I was met at the door by his lovely betrothed...who had just had a row of teeth ripped out instead of having oral surgery done.  She never received a bridge for her massive gap.  But she kept her stiff upper lip (tho slightly dented)

A very nice (but the English are all so awfully nice) middle-class lady working in my building stopped to chat over tea--her husband was on a 6-month waiting list for surgery.  He was in pain and couldn't work, but by golly, he was getting his health care "for free."

Britain's a relatively homogeneous nation of 70 million people.  There are 300 million (at least) Americans--this is a reverse economy of scale.  Nothing good will come of socialized medicine in this country.

63 Violated by O,

I've never met a Brit that would go back and be subjected to the NHS. Or is that subjugated? The Brits here are escaping the class-based society that is being set up now by the current government. Everyone of them I have spoken with lately has warned me that America is the last place left for free people.

Sorry about your grand-daughter. Maybe you didn't try hard enough. Or maybe your just full of shit.

"Mallamutt",

I hope you aren't from the South, we're supposed to have better manners than that. My travels are not at all extensive, but having family in Britain means I get over there every couple of years. Having family with health problems means I get to discuss health with a lot of people in the same situation, and that has included when I've gone to Britain. I daresay there are people who don't like the NHS, but I've never met one. Every British person I've met to discuss it has said it's wonderful. You must tell us all about the British people you know who think it's terrible, that would balance things out properly.

"Gee anyone have good joke to lighten up the day? "

Barack Hussein Obama was looking for a call girl.

He found three such girls in a local pub, a blonde, a brunette and a redhead.
To the blonde he said, 'I am the President of the United States.
Now how much would it cost me to spend some time with you?'
She replied, $200.'

To the brunette he asked the same question.
Her reply was $100.

He then asked the redhead....

Her reply was,
'Mr. President,
if you can get my skirt up as high as my taxes,
my pants as low as my wages,
get that thing of yours as hard as the times we are living in,
and keep it rising like the price of gas,
keep me warmer than it is in my apartment
and screw me the way you have retirees,
then it isn't going to cost you a damn cent !'

81 Following the vote on the massive health bill, Republicans challenged the Democratic bill's language barring federal funding of abortions, saying it was weak and would effectively allow public funding for abortions.

Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan, who had fought for tough language barring federal subsidies for abortion coverage, denounced the Republican move, saying it was nothing more than an attempt to deny 32 million Americans health care. From the Republican side a voice shouted, "Baby killer!"

Democrats really don't care at all about increasing revenue to the government.

They really don't.

Democrats only care about raising taxes to unfair, obscene, business-killing, crippling levels.

All for their glorious social welfare.  Good thing the media tell us about Obama's communist father.

Are you MAD and FIRED UP or..

are you just demoralized?

Last night was rough.  I was fully demoralized all morning, but it's fading.  There is work to be done and I fully intend on being a part of it in any way I can.  So yeah, I'm getting fired up.

As an aside, I'm currently working a job in Brooklyn and we keep getting visits from a local community organization by the name of Black Economic Survival (motto: We build foundations out of the bricks that are thrown at us).  Basically, they show up at the job site with around 20 thugs and try to squeeze contractors for work or pay offs.  We've had 3 flat tires on our payloader in 5 weeks, so that should tell you about the methods of community organizers.  They showed up again this morning.

Anyway,  I'm the client rep on site and have no say over who gets hired for labor on the job.  I went to get the contractor superintendant (a good solid conservative who would fit in well here) and let him know that they were back.  He said, "I've got no patience for that community organizing fuck this morning.  They got health care last night.  Tell 'em all to go to the fucking doctor.  It's 'free' now."

I'm pretty certain that before November we will all have had our fill of statements like:

"Yes, I know it was unpopular but I decided to rise above the partisan rhetoric and do what my heart said was best for the American people in the long run.  Yes, I offered myself as a sacrifice for all of the little people who couldn't get healthcare because of Republican hardhearted capitalism.  Even though I may lose my job yada yada.  Sometimes we have to defy the roaring of public sentiment and do what we know, down deep in our hearts, is right.  I may be punished at the polls, but I will sleep well, and history will remember me well for yada yada."

Prepare yourselves for months of this self-flagellation bullshit as these bastards play themselves off as sacrifices for their 'little people' and icons of leadership.  We'll need to counter act this.  I'm thinking long, derisive peels of laughter should do the trick.

Violet, hopefully I didn't come off as rude, despite my moniker.

What the British endure without complaining is a testament to their patience and tolerance for queues...but it's also representative of the prevailing mentality of learned helplessness.  As others have illustrated, medical care does not go untreated in this country, thanks to the generosity of others and the hard work done by researchers.

There is a spirit of individual  initiative that exists in this country but is under constant attack by an exploitative party and their wards, a small subset of the population who are incapable of preparing for their immediate and future needs.  The greatest example was the debacle of Katrina, where a large number of people living in a bowl didn't have the God-given sense to get their asses out of the way of a major hurricane.

Posted by: Big Fat Meanie at March 22, 2010 06:04 AM (DPM1U)

112 Violet is an idiot, ignore her.  My family has been treated by the NHS for their entire lives and I am surprised that there are any of them left.  It is mostly fine for Primary Care complaints such as colds, flu and the odd bladder infection, but God help you if you need to be referred to a specialist. My aunt  died of ovarian cancer waiting 18 months to see a specialist. My niece is almost deaf from all the ear infections she suffered as a child, she had to wait until she was 8 to get her tonsils out.  She was diagnosed as being mildly retarded before the surgery, turned out she just couldn't hear much because of the scar tissue in her ears. Now she plays violin and is in the top 10% of her class.  Last year I almost lost my mother to mis-diagnosed pulmonary embolism when the local emergency room sent her home. My uncle died a horrible death from what started as pneumonia and ended up as gangrene. This happens because there are limited resources, not enough hospital beds, not enough good people employed in healthcare so the government has to recruit overseas-frequently from some third world cess-pit.  Don't even get me started on end-of-life care.

Violet, I will grant the benefit of the doubt and believe your granddaughter's illness.  I will pray for her.

Having said that, you, your family and those in Congress and the executive HAVE NO RIGHT to confiscate my earnings to pay for your granddaughter's treatment.  You HAVE NO RIGHT to that which you did not work for or earn, unless I grant you that right through charitable donations.  You HAVE NO RIGHT to deny my children and grandchildren the fruits of my labor to treat your family.

Even granting your belief that today, your granddaughter may receive treatment otherwise denied (I don't believe that, but I'll grant your argument), you have insured that in the very near future, perhaps millions of others will suffer as a result.  Lost innovations, lost expertise, lost providers, lack of choice, and government intrusion above anything we've ever experienced.  That's a very large toll for you to exact on society as a whole to treat your granddaughter.

They have had threats and intimidation from Dems towards them. They loathe the Democratic party now, and have spoken in favor of people like Boehner and Ryan and Palin. I believe they are totally legit and when I have some money I will support them and the Republican party and the person running against Stupak Yes, they supported Hillary, but now the support Palin. That's what the process of the nomination of the faux messiah and his election did for some Democrats. Ah but see that's not what you implied in your earlier posts.  You implied lack of care.  And this bill will not change any of that.  Medicaid may not cover such catastrophic illnesses now and nothing in this bill ischanging that.  Healthcare will not become more affordable.  Unfortunately catastrophic illnesses are expensive no matter where you live or who you are.  And obviously you haven't tried everywhere or you would have been familiar with the places mentioned in other posts.

157 Walter Williams was on the radio this morning. He said that (say) he was walking through the park and saw and elderly woman in rags lying on a park bench drunk and in need of medical attention. He thought that the best plan would be to pull out his gun, rob everyone else as they came by and give the money to the woman to get medical treatment. However, that would still be a crime but if the govt does it, it is obamacare.

Well, glad I cheered somebody up! And just an aside, one of our local weathermen joked that half the white stuff on the ground Sat. was probably local people shredding their brackets and tossing them.

Saturday was a welcomed distraction from all this crap.  I still had it in the back of my mind, but for a few hours, I could mostly just sit and watch the various games.  My UW Huskies beat New Mexico in fine fashion, proving all the national press wrong about the under-dog Pac-10.  And that Kansas game was fricking awesome.  All I could think of as time was winding down was Northern Iowa needs to hold on so that they can destroy Bambi's bracket.  I was so excited when that guy made that last shot for Northern Iowa.  Heh!  It made me smile, and gave me a little flashback of "Chicago is out, Chicago is out!" in my head.

189 Speaking of yesterday an update on the book "A Patriot's History of the United States" which I finished last night.

It continued on in the liberal mode up through the War Between the States and Reconstruction.  One of the truly bizarre things was their treatment of the John Adams midnight court packing and Marbury v Madison.

The openly stated that there was no basis in the Constitution for "judicial review" but then turned around and praised it as being a good and necessary thing. They also had nothing good to say about the Jeffersonian Republicans desire for "strict construction" of the Constitution. I just don't see how they can call themselves conservatives and subscribe to the rubber Constitution theory that the leftists use.

However, once they got out of the antebellum era and past reconstruction it was like a different set of writers was contributing.  They became harcore anti-progressive conservatives and continued in that mode all the way up through Clinton.

One thing I actually learned that I didn't know before was the Clinton shutdown of the government was a planned thing BEFORE Newt's House and even started on the budget.  They had planned to hold up any budget submitted and say it was too low, shutdown certain parts of the government, and get a sympathetic press to help them blame it on Newt. And all of that had been in a memo that was discovered after the fact.  One wonders why the press never said anything about that?

So bottom line, if you are interested in History and get get past the early years it is a good read.

Heather, I wrote this earlier this a.m. and posted it on the Stupak thread.  I think it bears repeating:

66

I cannot sleep.  I feel absolutely ill.  Of course they are going to go for broke on all the other radical crap in their agenda (card check, amnesty, cap and trade, etc).  They are absolutely exhilarated by their evil corrupt "victory", and this now gives them the license to press on.

Tomorrow a.m., I am writing letters to almost all the charities I regularly support.  With the exception of just a few (my church, Wounded Warriors, USO, etc.) I am sending them letters that will read something like this:

"Dear______,

In the future, please save yourself the postage and the money and do not call me and do not send me any solicitations for donations requesting money.  I am currently no longer able to support you as all the money I previously set aside to contribute to organizations like yours and others will be used to try and take back my country.  The Democrat party has done egregious harm to this country that I love and is trying to irrevocably change it with its "historic vote for health care" on March 21, 2010.  I will now be donating the money that I had given to your organization and others in the past to political candidates that will try and prevent the continued downward slide of this country into socialism.  I am fairly certain that if we are not able to turn this trainwreck around, your non-profit organization as well as others will suffer even greater financial loss because of policies enacted by the Democrats.  The United States used to be the country that was the most generous in helping other countries through non-profit organizations like yours.  Americans donate to charities annually on a scale not seen in other countries.  Elections have consequences, and I'm sorry that I no longer can support your very commendable organization.  I do appreciate all the good work you've done in the past, but I need to concentrate my resources elsewhere while I still have them.

Sincerely,

Hey guys,

I've been a friend of Violet O's for years.  I helped wallpaper her first kitchen, and I wiped her ass that year she was an invalid after she ate those bad brownies at a Goldwater rally.

I'm a true friend of hers, so you can understand why I'm concerned about her latest behavior.  I really don't think it's appropriate for her to be posting on Ace of Spades Blog.  Nothing against you fine people, but Doctors have instructed her that unless she remains in a windowless room and harvests teeth from the recently slain, they will tear out her tonsils and chop her feet off.  Implicit in all this is that she not contact the outside world, of which Ace of Spades Blog is nominally a part.

So please, please, try to convince her to stop posting here.  Otherwise the proctologist is threatening not to treat her violent and hilarious diarrhea, and she already is raw and bloody from the constant visits to the toilet.

whatever happens from this point is on you, not us

Well, it should be obvious by now that that doesn't bother me in the slightest. My youngest granddaugher is dying (sorry, not supposed to mention that because it's just emtional and so not relevant!). What could some self-appointed guardians of the American way say to upset me more than that? And I respect your statistics, but statistics (my husband was a statistician, coincidentally) have rolled out on this one from both sides for over a year. What am I supposed to do, pull out stats from Obama's campaign to show how much difficulty many Americans have every year affording basid healthcare? It all gets meaningless because none of the stats can be regarded as reliable. All it comes down to is, does this work for America? I pay my taxes to keep troops well equipped in Afgahnistan, I pay my taxes so the police can keep crime down, I pay my taxes towards the firefighting department, and I'm happy to do so because it makes America a better place. I don't object to tax dollars funding firefighting because I've got good smoke alarms and safe wiring in my home and no-one's allowed to smoke, while other people have fire risk homes. I do it because Americans need to know that if the worst happens we can mutually support each other through central funding. All I have left is my own family's story. I'm not asking for you to care - I'm explaining why I do.

255 valuable comparison between current American healthcare and Britain’s NHS 1. U.K.’s heart-attack fatality rate is almost 20% higher than America’s 2. Angioplasties in Britain are only 21.3% as common as they are here 3. NICE ruled against the use of two drugs, Lapatinib and Sutent, that prolong the life of those with certain forms of breast and stomach cancer 4. Breast cancer in America has a 25% mortality rate; in Britain it’s almost double at 46% 5. Prostate cancer kills 19% of American and 57% of Brits 6. in 2006, a U.K-based board decreed that elderly patients with macular degeneration had to wait until they went blind in one eye before they could get a costly new drug to save the other eye. It took three years to get that outrageous decree reversed. 7. NICE will cut annual steroid injections for severe back pain from 60,000 to 3,000. Result? “It will mean more people on opiates, which are addictive and kill 2,000 a year. It will mean more people having spinal surgery, which is incredibly risky and has a 50% failure rate.” 8. Nearly 1.8 million people are waiting for a hospital admission or outpatient treatment 9. U.S. = 34 CT scanners per million; Britain = 8 10. U.S. = 27 MRI machines per million; Britain = 6 11. Brits wait twice as long to see a specialist than Americans 12. In U.S., recommended age for colon-cancer screening for men begins at 50. NHS starts at age 75. 13. Avastin, a drug for advanced colon cancer, is prescribed more often in the U.S. than in the U.K., by some estimates as much as 10 times more. 14. In U.K., 20% of potentially curable lung-cancer patients became incurable on the waiting list. And Andy, that's just for treatment.  I wonder how long it takes just to get diagnosed beforehand.  The U.S. has the highest cure rate for common cancers and the quickest time to be diagnosed.  We have more medical equipment than any other country, best axcess to care and the most highly advanced treatments.  All of this is going the way of the dodo bird, so I don't know why Violet O would have any cause to rejoice over this bill.  Americans have no idea the consequences of this bill.  We are talking entitled people who are used to instant gratification.  We are now going to be subjected to long lines, inefficiency, rationing, and less quality.

A defence spokesperson said scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Tezpur in northern Assam were making a trial run of the hand grenades and other repellents by using the bhut jolokia.

"The chilli grenade is a non-toxic weapon and when used would force a terrorist to come out of his hideouts as the smell is so pungent that it would literally choke them," R.B. Srivastava, a senior scientist and director of the DRDO said.

Actually, that's how I would do food stamps.  No cash, no "debit" cards, no donuts and burritos at the KwikiMart--you get a bag of beans, a bag of rice, a box of dehydrated milk, a loaf of bread and some peanut butter, some canned fruits and veggies (this can be augmented by vouchers good only at the local farmer's market in season), and because I'm not completely heartless, a little bit of butter.  I'll even throw in a pot to cook the rice and beans if you don't have one.  If you want more next week, you show up next week.

Posted by: runningrn at March 22, 2010 11:19 AM (CfmlF)

That's for sure.  Only a tiny part of ShrillaryCare made it through in '93 and that one little bit served to kill the vaccination industry.  Shrillary's move on child vaccinations effectively made the federal government the main customer for vaccinations, after which the US government started throwing its weight around in negotiations.  The number of vaccine producers dropped from something like 25 to 2.  That's why we've been late getting emergency vaccines (as for the swine flu, though we were lucky that the government was just hyping up the threat for its enjoyment and to try and nurture another crisis) and why production doesn't come close to meeting demand.  If the swine flu had been real, we would have all been screwed.

Strange how no more than a couple of people have bothered to mention how ShrillaryCare destroyed the vaccine industry, as we were woefully short of swine flu shots and as this insane federal takeover of health scare was being hotly debated.

Well, the US can kiss medical advancement good-bye.  This health scare is a staticist dream and it will bring stagnation to the health care industry (as was done to the vaccination industry) and stagnation is death with respect to man's battle with the dangerous elements of Nature.  On the bright side, the rest of the world won't be able to draft off of us, anymore.

270 I'm pretty convinced that - barring monumental voter fraud (beyond what the Dems have done in recent presidential elections) - Obama is a one-term president.  He's playing to the far Left and losing all of his Indy and centrist Dem support.

I think it's important that conservative politicians not waste too much time making the case that what's happening now (HCR, student loans, immigration, cap and trade) is "because of" Obama.  It's "because of" Congress.  If there were sensible people in the House and Senate, we wouldn't be getting force-fed a steady diet of Socialism.

So hang it around Obama's neck, but don't be too vitriolic about it or the public's (by that I mean the Indies and Centrists) natural tendency to "personally like" Obama (and see attacks on him as racist) will kick in.

I don't see Obama lasting 8 years, but if he did, by some chance, it wouldn't matter if he was de-fanged by taking back Congress.

I expect to see these more and more.  The authorities have soft-soaped the anarchists when they riot at the summit meetings and destroy property.

Now we are getting the "undetermined yoots" rioting and being soft-soaped.  If is a proven fact that if you do not enforce the law and the uncivilized fragments of society begin to see that, soon the entire city will be overrun.

That happened in the early days of San Francisco.  That is where the term "vigilante" originated shortly after that.  What will happen is normal fed up citizens will form committees of vigilance and the lamp posts will be decorated with some of these yoots.

Fair enough. But I think the point is that we're subsidizing unhealthy lifestyle choices now and will have to pay for the ill effect later too.  It's that type of shit that only a boneheaded wefare state can create.

283 Re Philly riots

I expect to see these more and more.  The authorities have soft-soaped the anarchists when they riot at the summit meetings and destroy property.

Now we are getting the "undetermined yoots" rioting and being soft-soaped.  If is a proven fact that if you do not enforce the law and the uncivilized fragments of society begin to see that, soon the entire city will be overrun

I'm seriously considering having the rest of my Tax go to a gun.

284 Fair enough. But I think the point is that we're subsidizing unhealthy lifestyle choices now and will have to pay for the ill effect later too.

But the thing is that, although there are certainly broad trends, you cannot predict what lifestyle choices will result in illnesses for particular individuals.

Most of the younger people (30s) I know use a lot of medical services... to pay for effed-up knees from rock-climbing, running, hiking, etc.  And my free-spirited friends in their 40s (and older) are being treated for sun-related skin damage.

Seriously, my friends who are low to moderately active and live in suburbia are in better health than my granola eating ones.

We are all faced with uncertainty about the consequences of our choices. It's best to leave them as choices.

I don't disagree. But It's f'ed up that the taxpayer ends up encouraging some of them. Why do I have to pay for food stamps that allow you to buy soda and candy and also for a healthy foods initiative for poor urban areas? It's espeically grating since WIC has limits on the type of food you can buy and those requirement could easily be transferred over to food stamps.

We could try torturing them the way they do us by levying taxes on and requiring licensing and permits for their favorite activities.  If there are fishing and hunting fees, why not similar fees for strenuous activities that have a high risk for leading to injuries?  I like the idea of a huge governmental bureaucracy attached to rock-climbing and hiking.  Taste of their own medicine and whatnot.

Absolutely--if someone else is paying for your food, they should get to decide what kind of food you get from them.  This is why I buy my own food.

Bizarro world--the food I pay for with my own wages is being increasingly taxed/restricted to try to steer me toward "acceptable" choices, but if I had an EBT card, I could use it on Slurpees and nachos. And get cash for each kid in July so I could get a bigger TV.

Yeah.   And I'll "share the road" with cyclists when they pay an annual fee to register their bicycle and purchase a license that allows them to ride it on a regular basis (after passing a written and riding test).  And if an accumulation of tickets for blowing through stop signs and red lights gets that license revoked.

328  Uh, please don't -- as a horse rider I'm already under increasing scrutiny and pressure from Big Bro thanks to all the happy, shiny, bunny lovers.  Had to give up teaching lessons thanks to the insurance/liablity (and people willing to sue you at the drop of a hat); had to give up breeding, training, showing (any sort of big circuit) thanks to increased expense thanks to gas prices, liablity insurance increases (again).  I really don't want to give up my horses alltogether, but it's increasingly starting to look like that could very well happen.

I've always been happy to pay the extra insurance and/or take the risk of injury upon myself and my kids (it's a dangerous thing to do -- so you take that responsiblity upon yourself every time out).  I think that's the way it should be with any sort of activity -- know the risks, train yourself and use some common sense, live your life the way you want to.  Now it looks like I'm going to get the choice to do so taken away...for my own good.

Thanks a lot, nanny staters.

Deanna,

Blessings to you and your family too. Look after them and watch over them, you never know when one of the might be seriously ill.

I'd never heard of this blog before today, it was sent to me as a Twitter link. I thought it was a debating place so I made my point. I don't wish to draw attention to myself or to prove anyone wrong, just to be heard. I'm a Republican but I believe in democratic discussion. I didn't know I'd be unwelcome. Given the level of abuse sent my way before I'd even made a reply ("that's a crock of crap. no one here is going to believe that garbage", "you are a liar", "Violet O, you have clearly missed your mental health professional appointment. Your stupid is horrible waste of bandwidth", "Sorry about your grand-daughter. Maybe you didn't try hard enough. Or maybe your just full of shit", "Thank you for being much smarter than us poor, stupid, mouth-breathing conservatives", "Fuck off troll", "Fuck you Violet" - and I was told I wasn't offering an argument!), I'm hardly going to let it upset me that people here are offended by someone with a different point of view. I never told anyone to fuck off.

So your accusations of disgusting expoitation don't break me out in much of a sweat. I've done all my soul-searching, I'll probably cry again a lot more before the year is out, but I've made my peace with my savior about this for now. I didn't come here for assistance, as I say, but those who care are free to donate generously to LLS. They need it.

And thank you for showing more concern for my granddaughter than I do. I have just returned from three weeks in another state where my son's family lives so that my daughter in law can get a very little rest. My little gd is still playing and cheerful for the time being - things improve for a short time after one decides to stop all treatment. I'm a freelancer so that cost me a fortune, but I'm sure if you were in the same position you'd consider it an honour to help, and a small price to pay, too.

Sorry 229, I didn't see that reply.

The article you link to is about private (ie non-NHS) dentistry. Read it again.

The NHS provides free dental checks for school age children but for no-one else. Treatment always has to be paid for. The Labor government made some pledge about providing at least dental treatment on the NHS but it never happened, so instead everyone has to pay for the slightest thing. I don't consider that my problem.

The Caring Bridge Site that Becki Coate's website directs you to in regards to her granddaughter states that the child is receiving care at the Kadlec Medical Center.  The Kadlec Medical Center is in Richland, WA.  Richland and Kennewick are 2 of the three cities that comprise the area known as Tri-Cities.  They are right next to each other, in Washington state.

I don't take too seriously the "You don't agree with me, therefore you don't understand what you're talking about" line of argument. We can all do that, if we are shameless. Of course I've read up about it, but the only thing I praised was the British NHS (which I believe is a much more radically centralized form of healthcare than this bill) and said I was personally pleased. No problem.  I am amazed that so many people are blissfully unaware of who Petraeus really is.  He bought off a bunch of arab warlords and thinks that they are really his friends.  Petraeus knows precious little about arab culture.  He ought to read a little Ibn Khaldun.  And Petraues' anti-Israel stance is really quite disgusting and seriously dangerous.  Israel is going to be pushed to use the whole of its arsenal to defend its existence, as they have now been left totally alone, with support from no one but American conservatives, who have no power.

People will see, though.  It's a shame they can't read and find out before some more really bad shit comes down.

First, David Petraeus is NOT going to run for President. Seriously. If he does, I'll eat the flash off my beret and post the pictures.

1. Absolute refusal to abase himself in front of the electorate. Not his style. If someone offered him the dictatorship, he'd think about it.

2. Holly (Mrs. Petraeus) will beat him to death in his sleep. She's still mad he took CENTCOM. They wanted EUCOM so he could spend some time home. He's been on the road almost nonstop since 2003.

3. The Palestinian thing is a tactical move. He deals with lots of heads of state, from the Saudis on down, who give lip service to the Palestinian issue. To be seen as a partner, and to get things we want from them, like Predator overflight rights, we have to be seen as accomodating their concern. Again, if David Petraeus gave a shit about the Palestinians in any respect other than basic human compassion, I'll eat the beret flash.

My take on this: Dave is going around trying to build his political influence just so he can get the American people to back the moves he made and will continue to make overseas. The next time he gets hauled in front of Congress to testify to people he believes are his intellectual inferiors, he wants an American insurgency calling those same Congress-critters to show support and keep the Foreign Relations Committee or the Armed Services Committee from fucking up his Kool-Aide. He doesn't like people looking over his shoulder. Dude is a born autocrat. I'm probably the only one here who worked for him (admittedly five steps down the chain of command removed). And I get some of my info from people a lot closer.

Secondly, if anyone believes anything posted by the three to five Shrillary worshippers at Hillbuzz, you deserve to be their cellmates at the loony bin. They're the ultimate dead-ender cult. Remember all that underground "PUMAs for McCain!!!" bullshit we bought into for the '08 Election? Yeah, I remember hearing about it right until the election night when they all walked the plank for the Chocolate Messiah like the good little Democrats most of them are. It's almost as dumb as believing Bart Stupak would put his principles ahead of his party affiliation.

#367, you're forgetting something. David Petraeus doesn't HAVE friends. That is a human weakness that the dude doesn't have. To him, the world is divided between opponents and supporters, and the supporters are graded according to loyalty.

And those lists get reshuffled on a daily basis depending who did what for him lately. Ask LTG Ben Freakley, who was his assistant division commander when Petraeus commanded the 101st.

338 Every British person I've met to discuss it has said it's wonderful. You must tell us all about the British people you know who think it's terrible, that would balance things out properly.

You are talking to one right now.  My parents hated the NHS (passed in England  after WWII by bribes and crooked numbers, and leading to 15 yrs. of conservative government when the public first experienced the NHS -- SOUND FAMILIAR?) and emigrated to the US, never to return.  Whenever they got sick, they'd thank God that they lived in America and not Britain.

If you Google "I Hate The NHS" you can read numerous accounts of the terrible waits, the half-ass treatments, the filthy hospitals and the horrifying outcomes of NHS "health care."  Most of the people who defend the NHS are socialists and communists who dislike the Conservative Party and free enterprise so much that they'll willfully ignore the NHS's poor record, just so they won't have to agree with the Tories.  Again, sound familiar?

Guess which party stole it, and win a prize!

If that's true then Petreaus should understand that there is no such concept as "loyalty" in the arab world.  There never has been. That's why one can have a staunch arab ally for decades ... only to turn around one day and find a knife in his back, for no discernible reason.  The history of the area and those cultures is replete with such examples and Westerners genrally have a very difficult time coming to grips with such odd personalities.  That's why I recommended a little Ibn Khaldun.  The arabs have been this way for a long, long time.  It is an artifact of nomadic desert life, which is what their cultures sprang from.

#373, I'm pretty sure he's on that. I forget the name of "Big Dave"'s Arabist advisor, but he's been with him for years which speaks to his competence. Dave would fire his own mom if she was having a bad week.

You can generally trust them not so much as to "stay bought" but act in their own interests, which may differ wildly from yours. And lets not forget the regional variations. I'd trust an Iraqi further than I would trust a Saudi or a Yemeni. And the CENTCOM AOR involves a lot of non-Arab Muslims as well. I doubt I'd waste my time listening to a Chechen lie to me.

342 You are a puzzling woman Deanna. You complain at least twice that I wasn't replying to you, thinking that your posts were so important that ignoring them was a sign of fear until you "hit on an obvious sore point" (er, no), and then when I reply you tell me not to. I dropped in to make a modest point, not to get insulted, if anyone really thought I was a troll I thought the usual rule was do not feed. I look in to see what has happened to the debate and find I am told to fuck off. Fair enough. It doesn't matter to me. But if you don't want to continue the conversation, why don't you not reply?

Al Sharpton: 'Obama Voters Wanted Socialism'

Hat Tip to NewsBusters.

Sharpton, the founder of the National Action Network and talk radio host told Fox News on March 21, during their special coverage of the House of Representatives’ passage of health care reform legislation, this victory for President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would begin “transforming” the country.

……“First of all, then we have to say the American public overwhelmingly voted for socialism when they elected President Obama,” Sharpton said. “Let’s not act as though the president didn’t tell the American people – the president offered the American people health reform when he ran. He was overwhelmingly elected running on that and he has delivered what he promised.”

Despite polling showing otherwise leading up to the momentous occasion of the vote on health care reform, the claim this goes against the wishes of the American people is false based on the 2008 presidential election.

Conservatives, libertarians, and political/military bloggers were screaming about this throughout the entire campaign. When we started digging around into ObamaÂ’s background, friends, associates, ideology, and the organizations to which he belonged, his socialist/Marxist/Alinskyite philosophy was right there, in no uncertain terms. Look at all the videos of his speeches to ACORN. Read the information on the Annenberg Foundation. Read the blurbs from his books (ghostwritten by Bill Ayers) which lay out every single premise he wanted to put into policy if he ever got the chance.

Well, he not only got that chance thanks to liberal and minority tools, but heÂ’s putting those into action.

How’s that “change” working out for ya?
