Re sidebar: Harvard: to meet Obama's GHG targets, you'll be paying $7/gal for gas. In other unrelated news, pitchfork, tar and feather futures opened sharply higher today
To meet the Obama administrationÂ’s targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, some researchers say, Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon.
When Harvard and the NYT says $7.00/gal for gas you can hold on to your socks. In actuality the Heritage foundation picked much worse and based it on the administrations own numbers. Anyone who downloaded and read that massive POS crap and tax bill can readily see why I call it a litmus test for conservatives and Republicans. You don’t have to be a “purity Republican” to say that anyone who voted for that POS is an outright Communist. ALL should actually read that thing. There are things in that bill that will terrify you.
The Heritage Foundation said electricity prices would rise between a factor of 2 and 5 based on congressional numbers. Hahahahaha, that means the most likely thing would be a minimum 5 and a maximum of 10. I have been using app 600KW/week during this period of globull warming we are having. At the current rate of 7.2 cents/KW and throw in all the BS taxes and fees that will run about $200/month for electricity alone. Multiply that by a factor of 5 and it goes to a $1,000/month. Are they going to raise my retirement income by a factor of 5??? I donÂ’t think so.
As for gas, it will easily increase by over a factor of 5 because THAT was the target Obama wanted to get rid of. I would say gas will go to over $10.00 gal in the short term and in the long term much higher IF you can get it at all.
Of course Obama and the Democrat apparatchiks will be riding around in their armored SUVs and living in the heated gov building at 75°F at taxpayer expense.

These Democratic Sinatras will do it their way. President Obama is expected to endorse reconciliation in remarks this morning.
The goal is to permanently expand the American entitlement state with a vast apparatus of subsidies and regulations while the political window is still (barely) open, regardless of the consequences or the overwhelming popular condemnation. As Mr. Obama fatalistically said after his health summit, if voters don't like it, "then that's what elections are for."
In other words, he's volunteering Democrats in Congress to march into the fixed bayonets so he can claim an LBJ-level legacy like the Great Society that will be nearly impossible to repeal. This would be an unprecedented act of partisan arrogance that would further mark Democrats as the party of liberal extremism. If they think political passions are bitter now, wait until they pass ObamaCare.

Hell, when cap-and-tax destroys the transportation industry you won't be able to get much of anything at all*. People in cities that get winter are going to starve to death after they eat all the pets. Don't think that's an "unintended" consequence.
* I like to think this is where we lose all but the most hardcore hippie commune whackos--when they can't organic pomegranate latte, they'll start to rethink how much they really hate post-industrial society. But I think by then it's too late to undo.

I sat and read that whole Cap and Trade bill, too, and you are exactly right. It is full of all sorts of horrible things (the least of which is the way in which GE will make boatloads of money from being a provider of favored appliances and energy systems). Inspectors for homes, which will get energy ratings (new homes first, then existing ones to follow). Cash for appliance clunkers, killing the used appliance and repair businesses. Rules on appropriate lighting, with exemptions for brighter light (like for surgery) being granted through the energy secretary. Ten university energy think tanks all over the country, with the power to rate practices and energy using items. Etc. etc.
I will not vote for anyone who supports Cap and Trade. And if I can do so, I will do what I can to remove such people from office (Lindsay Graham, are you listening?).

Re sidebar: Harvard: to meet Obama's GHG targets, you'll be paying $7/gal for gas. In other unrelated news, pitchfork, tar and feather futures opened sharply higher today
Gas is only the start - power generation will also be affected. Especially the numerous coal plants. If those bastards get crap and tax it's going to destroy everything. Let's say that household power cost was unaffected. That wouldn't matter because every industrial job in America will be destroyed and no one will have an income to pay the bill anyway. Contrary to popular belief the US still has a very large manufacturing economy. It, combined with agriculture, props up the service economy. Industry and agriculture will be decimated by this kind of energy cost increase. The entire structure will fall, and it will fall fast. If the power bills, already a large fraction of the cost of production, were to go up to the degree the Libs want, every producer in the US would be done. Unemployment numbers would be truly epic, and the reduction in consumption would hit every industry and intensify the death spiral.
For a short while we would have the biggest trade deficit in the history of time, up until now and forever after, and then trade would essentially stop because we couldn't afford to make ANYTHING. Americans will die of starvation if these loons get what they want. If they do this they will literally be threatening our lives. The words of the Declaration of Independence come to mind.
Instead of wasting our time on this bullshit we need to be investing in making more energy, and cheaper, rather than less energy.

Well, I posted a thing yesterday where I hoped he would get caught in a tryst at a rest stop on I-20 so we could get rid of him and everyone went ballistic so I haven't included him.
As far as I am concerned he is rapidly approaching DIABLO, not based on his ACU rating, but on his willingness to side with the Dems on communist stuff like crap and tax.

The green movement is big into "smart growth" urban planning, which comes directly from the Soviet Union. One of the goals of smart growth is concentration of the population into multi-family housing in dense urban areas. It makes sense that you can probably cut down on electrical useage if you cram people into small apartments: fewer rooms to light, fewer rooms to heat/cool, units above and below help to maintain the temperature of other units around them, etc. So how do you acomplish this? Jack up energy rates and encourage the construction of high rises while adding in draconian zoning restrictions designed to prevent "urban sprawl."
Plus, forcing people into urban areas encourages the use of mass transit, and massive excise tax increases on gasoline make it too expensive for most people to own a vehicle. So now you have people living where you want and with limited ability to pack up and move out because they don't have cars, and high interest rates will make it extremely difficult to buy or sell homes anyway. Throw in cradle to grave medical care and you have total control.

Exactly. This guy is a full-on brain dead retard. He and his kind have no idea how many thousands of Americans owe their jobs to the Japanese transplants. At least 10s of thousands. Not to mention the fact that it was the Japanese competition that got our domestic companies to improve, rather than just keep on cranking out shit cars year after year.
And the fact is that this Toyota problem is small potatoes - and I'll bet that 4 out of 5 of the so-called "related deaths" were due to pure, simple driver dumb-assery rather than any sticking gas pedal. That's how it was when Audi had the gas pedal complaint some years back. I'm sure there are at least 10 other comparable safety problems right now that we don't even know about, that take out a couple people each year, and they're totally under the radar.

A similar strategy for managing a growing mountain of debt on this side of the Atlantic might work, with Washington increasing the top tax rate, say, from 35% to 45%. At the same time, rates could be increased by a smaller amount in lower brackets.
From a historical perspective this makes a great deal of sense. Consider that the top marginal rate peaked at 94% in the final years of World War II. It remained above 90% for most of the 1950s, and held steady at 70% during the 1970s. Republican Ronald Reagan emerged as the great tax buster, shaving the top bracket to a mere 28%. (During his presidency the rate in the bottom bracket increased by a point to 15%.)

A lot of people are still mad at the Republican party and are waiting to hear them say something that would indicate that they understand. It would have been light at 6 in the winter anyway (assuming you mean 6 p.m.). Winter is when the clocks sync with the sun; summer is when they're off. Noon on the clock in July is 11 a.m. on a sundial. I know because DST screwed up all the "Movies in the Park" events and fireworks displays that start at dusk -- they had to wait 'til 10 p.m. before it was dark enough to see the show, when before they started at 9.

Actually there has never been any way that DST could have saved anything, even IF somehow it resulted in us using out lighting in homes less.
The sinple fact is that residential lighting is a very tiny fraction of the electricity usage in most American housholds. On top of that, residential electricity usage is only a small fraction of overall electricity usage.
The overwhelming majority of electricity usage in this country is from industrial and commercial. It does not matter what time of day there is for the lights. They burn those lights 24/7 in most buildings. But still the major loads in commercial are HVAC and the major loads in industrial are heavy motors. Again, the time of day makes no damn difference whatsoever.
Any politician that tells you DST saves electricity is damn liar.

People should be angry about this crap - and I mean really, really angry and moved to action. Whatever agitation is necessary to drive people into a frenzy of hatred for the current administration is well justified.

I love DST. My work place isn't going to change operation hours to match the seasons, and I want every scrap of daylight I can get AFTER working hours when I can use it to work on all the stuff I can't work on during the long dark of winter. And no, I don't want to start a project in the morning, work for a half hour to an hour, and then take it back up again after work. DST provides the maximum uninterupted daylight for my activity outside work. Daylight in the morning is wasted. I wish Michigan would keep it in place permanently - that would suit me fine. If it saves electricity in homes that's fine, but I wouldn't care if it wasted MORE energy.

Vic 7.2 cents per kw? I'm over 18 in ct. If my electric rates multiply by 5 my anger is going to multiply by 223. Never mind $10 gal gas.
I'll bet that you don't have a heat pump (or all electric house) so the increase in cost would not be as dramatic to you.
But anyway was that a factor of 223 or .223? LOL.

My old work place used to allow flexibility in work hours for most employees around a core block of time. The noraml day shift work hours were 8 to 4 with a half hour for lunch but you could come in as early as 6 or as late as 9 and then work your 8 hours.
That is what you should be pushing for. Hell, during the summer here if we went in at 6 and got off at 2:30 you could get a full 18 holes in before dark. And yes, a lot of people did that.

"Medina saying she won't endorse Perry. Might run third party."
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, strategically. I would venture to say that a pretty healthy portion of those voting for her would have a hard time voting for Perry; they'd either stay home or vote for White.
She'd be a spoiler, but IMO more of a spoiler for potential White voters than Perry voters. I dunno...

I agree that residential lighting is a small amount overall. That's just the way it was sold to the public. Industry doesn't care. Farmers could care less. Amusement park owners, golf course owner, etc. are the ones it benifits the most.

Here in Indiana, we've only been stuck with DST for a few years.
I recall as a kid we had it and then stopped using it.
Joanna at March 03, 2010 11:04 AM (7+WuG) Just curious. What part are you in?

I heard on the radio the bit about the earthquake making our days slightly shorter. Sounds like it is in the range of seconds, though, and even though "our" (North Hemisphere) days are shorter, that would mean that somewhere else (South Hemisphere), "their" days are longer.
So basically, by having a massive earthquake, the Chileans stole a second of every day from us... Jerks.

I have one of those radio setting clocks that is supposed to be accurate to within one second every 50,000 years. If this means I lose or gain a second every 20,000 years, I'm going to want a refund.

Shorter days mean the surface of the Urf will spend more time in darkness, away from those harmful warming rays of the sun!

Congress man wants Reagan on $50 bill. I would recommend the $100 for 2011 only for his 100th birthday.
If an earthquake can shorten the time, can't a future earthquake lengthen the time?

Me too; I just get tired of those 1000 post gay bashing/pushing screeds. It all boils down to "you suck" back and forth in the end.

"If an earthquake can shorten the time, can't a future earthquake lengthen the time?"
Yes. If I'm thinking about how this works correctly, then all the earthquake did was lean the earth over a little more. A subsequent earthquake (I guess it would need to be of equal magnitude, but somewhere up in Russia / China / Korea, not sure if there is a fault line up there, or where it runs), might counteract the shift and pull the earth a little more upright.
I'd be interested to know if the earthquake shifted the magnetic poles any, or if the change is only the planet's physical axis.
