Some “maybe” good news today for NYC taxpayers:

NYC to close 'rubber rooms' for teachers

Mayor Bloomberg and the city's teachers' union are set to announce today an agreement that will shutter the controversial teacher reassignment centers known as "rubber rooms," The Post has learned.

Not much detail in the article so donÂ’t know if Bloomberg gave away the store to get a small relief in bad press.

Our local media is fair--if not biased towards Rs depending on which channel you watch.

Last night they did a piece on the Tax Rally here tonight (Hannity is filming here).

They interviewed the police chief who said he wasn't concerned with the 15,000K estimated to be in attendance. He was more concerned to what they couldn't account for--the counter demonstrators.

It was a pleasant (and refreshing) dig.

73 Everyone talking about a "refund" vs "owing the bastards".  Another thing I find "ironic" is that if you get a big refund that's all you get, a refund. The government gets and interest free loan from you for a year.  However, woe to your sorry ass if you owe them a bunch because not enough was withheld. You are going to cough up what you owe PLUS interest.

I was talking with a friend last night about why I oppose the VAT. Apart from the usual reasons (it's a "hidden" tax, it tends to grow insidiously, and it's a productivity-killer), the main reason was that we won't get a VAT instead of an income tax, but rather in addition to an income tax. Thus, if your current marginal rate is around 25% (as mine is), your actual rate under a VAT would skyrocket to something around 40% or thereabouts. And because it's "hidden" behind multiple layers of production, you can never identify exactly where and when you're getting screwed. That's why politicians love it so much.

I suppose I wouldn't grouse so much about the VAT if it were a replacement for the current Income Tax, but that's not going to happen.

96 So this is what you do to those who serve our Country Officer challenging Obama 'reassigned' http://bit.ly/bu9zYu   The U.S. Army says a surgeon who has publicly refused to follow any further orders until he sees documentation that Barack Obama is eligible to be president is being "reassigned" at Walter Reed Army Hospital after he refused to deploy to Afghanistan as scheduled.   On the day he was supposed to have reported for deployment, Lakin was read his rights by Col. Gordon Roberts, his brigade commander, who discussed the situation with him and told him he had the "right to remain silent" because he was about to be charged with "serious crimes."   A spokeswoman for the case, Margaret Calhoun Hemenway, told WND that whatever the "assignment" amounts to, Lakin's access privileges were revoked, his computer was confiscated and he "is not permitted to support his Hippocratic oath Â… and take care of the troops as a doctor and a surgeon."

99 My plan; take the House, 1) announce a new stimulus package -- suspension of withholding for X months (not a tax cut - so the CBO can show no deficit impact, just keep the cash in people's pockets at the bottom of the economy) - continue until economy improves. Prepare for the tax revolt that starts either on the following April 15th or when you slam the withholding back onto peoples paychecks. 2) index the Federal gas tax so that it decreases as a percentage as the base price goes up - give Washington a direct financial incentive to manage our foreign affairs and energy policies to keep gas under control and affordable. 3) prohibit direct payroll deductions to political parties or various 501 (all non-charitable, not for profits) - force the unions to collect a personal check from their members.

By the way, I personally believe that Obama was born in Hawaii, a citizen of the U.S.  What I would love to see, though, is this "genius's" actual college transcripts.  The notations of the Deans of Admissions would be a hoot, I bet.

103 Threw my back out early this week and still in considerable pain. However, we are out of food and I can't find anything palatable to take motrin with. I'm going to hobble, grimacing over to the store. When I get back, I guess I'll have to kick the refridgerated goods through the house to the kitchen. Somehow, I see this as Obama's fault--I'm working on a theory.

I dunno.  I think the reader started out unnecessarily (and unhelpfully) hostile.  If the facts support your assertions, it's best to avoid pejoratives out of the gate.

Take care.  Back issues blow.

Any chance you have a grocery store nearby that delivers?  I was surprised to find that one of our local chains (Vons) delivers.  Maybe you could hop on the internet first and see if one of your area one does.

Aw, Gabe is angry.

You don't even come close (boy) to the kind of righteous rage that will soon be unleashed upon the White House Correspondents Association when World Net Daily contracts Chuck Norris for a little reckoning.

WND = Weapons of Norris Destruction.

So sorry to hear.  I have back problems and about once or twice a year get horrible spasms that last 4-5 days.  In that time I literally cannot do anything except lay in bed in pain.  Hope you feel better soon.

CNN posted something this morning.

Posted by: Y-not at April 15, 2010 07:11 AM (Kn9r7)

112 oh and I'm slightly annoyed at Beck.  This morning he went on and on and on about how Sarah Palin travels by herself with no security.  That may be true but with so many nuts out there did he have to keep saying it?

Posted by: curious at April 15, 2010 07:12 AM (p302b)

113 he "is not permitted to support his Hippocratic oath Â… and take care of the troops as a doctor and a surgeon."
If he converts to Islam, I'm sure the investigation will end and the charges will be stayed as there's already some precedence for that and military doctors.

115 #37  Romney/Palin -- SUCH a waste of Sarah's potential.

There are many of you who don't like Mitt, and I understand why.  However, there are two ways this can play out.
1)  Folks pick on of the two that is good enought that it justifies supporting the ticket.  Those who really want a responsible, fiscally knowledgeable adult running things would pick Mitt.  He would probably draw in a lot of disaffected Dems as well.  Sarah coupled with him gives the more enthusiastically ideological among us someone to root for, and someone to act as an anchor on Mitt's less acceptable positions.  IOW, the total is greater than the sum of the parts.
2)  Folks decide that one of the two is unacceptable, so that the entire ticket alienates everyone.
I honestly can't say which would happen, but I would expect to be either electoral dynamite or electoral poison.  No middle ground.

@44 So now I owe, get this....$1.

11 People are saying it was a meteor -- which from the youtube videos I would say yes, one hell of a big, bright one too.

I find it rather odd that it wasn't front and center in the news though.

She could have been polite without kissing his ass and begging to be his running mate.  Example:  "Mitt certainly has talents.  Obviously we don't agree on everything, but he has one hell of an organization, he's great at fundraising, and he managed to win in a very blue state.  Mitt and I are both focusing on a common goal of winning back Congress right now, and I'm not putting much thought into 2012 at the moment".

Yeah, that would have been a better response.

As with the Steele vote of confidence, Sarah doesn't always hit the right reserved tone on these things.

It doesn't affect my overall view of her, however.

You hit the nail on the head.  She's very all-or-nothing about these things.  She needs to be more nuanced about stuff like this.  I think that goes against her nature, but as Paul Anka would say, "THAT'S JUST THE FUCKING WAY IT IS".

122 re: 94 #76 - corn and antifreeze at first i thought this was a new AOSHQ highball. it kills birds? tell me more. i got a tree that i park my car under, has blue berries on it that the birds eat and then shit blue shitberries all over my car. live in town so the 12 gauge solution might get problematic. tell me more. got no use for birds other than at kfc, figured they were just some of God's prototypes that got loose. appreciate hawks and buzzards but the little shitbirds, mockingbirds and blue jays can all go die. soon. with help from me. can't believe i might actually get something useful from coming here and hanging around...

123 i got a tree that i park my car under, has blue berries on it that the birds eat and then shit blue shitberries all over my car.

Why not just take the tree down?  The birds will just keep coming back.

Posted by: Y-not at April 15, 2010 08:26 AM (Kn9r7)

124 Mockingbirds may be protected where you live.  They have nice songs.  It seems a shame to go on a killing spree when the solution is to remove the tree or park your car in your garage.

I'm not even sure that Bluejays eat berries.  I think they are acorn eaters.

You're going to kill off a lot of songbirds with your strategy... and not solve your problem.

Posted by: Y-not at April 15, 2010 08:33 AM (Kn9r7)

125 OK, last post about poisoning birds.

Mockingbirds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.  Hundreds of species are protected.

Poisoning is an indiscriminate way to kill off pests.  I realize Kemp's poisons will be on his property, but it is odd to me that someone would risk subjecting a dog or cat to a painful death because their owner didn't abide by the leash law.

Poisoned corn is going to get eaten by a lot of animals and undoubtedly some of them will be protected by the MBTA.

Bluejays will eat virtually anything.

FROM PPP......Our monthly look ahead to the 2012 Presidential race finds Barack Obama more or less tied with all four of the leading candidates for the Republican nomination. He trails Mike Huckabee 47-45 and Mitt Romney 45-44, ties Newt Gingrich at 45-45, and leads Sarah Palin 47-45. This is the weakest performance Obama's posted in these 13 monthly surveys and a pretty clear indication that passing health care has not done anything to enhance his political standing, at least in the short term.

Sarah is down 2 to Obama. And people think she can't win?

129 #105 Dagny I don't know where you live, but if you are in a fairly small town, you might have options not available in big cities. I live in small town Colorado. Both Safeway and City Market [a branch of Kroger] will take phone in orders from housebound people; usually disabled or elderly, and deliver without extra charge. I would not expect that in cities, but rural folk tend to take care of their own. Good luck with the back, I have similar problems too. Subotai Bahadur

130 Bloomberg via Drudge: Argentina will later today unveil its plan to restructure $20 billion in defaulted debt held out of a 2005 settlement, a move that may allow the country to access international debt markets for the first time in almost a decade. Among interesting tidbits in the article...a goodly portion of Argentine debt is held by individuals in Italy. It writes itself.
