WASHINGTON – First-time claims for jobless benefits fell last week, evidence that employers are laying off fewer workers. But claims remain too high to signal steady job creation.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits fell by 24,000 to a seasonally adjusted 456,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That nearly matched analysts' estimates, according to Thomson Reuters.

AP has already changed this story. The earlier version stated that unemployment dropped "sharply" showing more signs of the economic recovery. But I guess that much bullshit was even too much for AP.

In a surprise (for me ruling) the court struck down a federal law banning the making and possession of videos of “animal cruelty” which included dog fighting and other venues.

 

The ruling was 8-1, not even close. What was surprising was that Alito and Roberts disagreed. Alito was the sole dissenter who wanted to uphold the law.

 

Personally I would have loved to see them strike this down on the basis that the federal government has no authority to legislate in the venue of “animal cruelty” at all.  That would have eliminated the stupid federal dog fighting laws as well and it would have left it up to the States to decide how they wanted to regulate this.

 

Instead, they struck it down on first amendment issues which closes it out for the States as well. So good news, tempered with a little “it could have been better”.

Three years ago, I contacted CAIR as they were giving out free Korans, except it was a very large one with picutres, glossy pages, etc. It was essentially the size of a large school text book.
