From the Chicago Scum Times
WASHINGTON — Senior staffers at the Securities and Exchange Commission spent hours surfing pornographic websites on government-issued computers while they were being paid to police the financial system, an agency watchdog says.
A senior attorney at the SECÂ’s Washington headquarters spent up to eight hours a day looking at and downloading pornography. When he ran out of hard drive space, he burned the files to CDs or DVDs, which he kept in boxes around his office. He agreed to resign, an earlier watchdog report said.

[...]behind the scenes, certain lobbyists are quietly but aggressively scurrying about, pushing hard for the passage of the CFPA in a power grab by the Executive Branch that would dwarf the Health Care Reform bill and the Patriot Act. And with the passage of the proposed CFPA, one man [Eric Stein] in particular with a history tied to some of the deepest tentacles in the financial crisis - and to the Comunity Reinvestment Act of 1995 - would gain the power to selectively manipulate the entire landscape of the financial, small business and housing markets.

Oh there's quite a few who had the job well in hand
An accountant was blocked more than 16,000 times in a month from visiting websites classified as “Sex” or “Pornography.” Yet he still managed to amass a collection of “very graphic” material on his hard drive by using Google images to bypass the SEC’s internal filter, according to an earlier report from the inspector general. The accountant refused to testify in his defense, and received a 14-day suspension.
Seventeen of the employees were “at a senior level,” earning salaries of up to $222,418.
He said in a statement that SEC officials “were preoccupied with other distractions” when they should have been overseeing the growing problems in the financial system.
Are you masterbating to pron? No, I'm preoccupied with other distractions.

"I am convinced the stock market is being manipulated. Zero could get up on stage, say nothing other than to soil his pants, and the market will go up."
It is bizarre, I have to confess. When I look at what is going on in terms of unemployment, real estate foreclosures, the huge debt we have incurred, the real estate debacle to come as billions of dollars of loans on commercial real estate (much of it underwater) come due, etc., etc., there seems to be little rationality to the rising market.
I've been wrong before, but I'm sure not making any financial decisions based on the stock market continuing to go up. I'm still much more in the "preserve what you have" mode right now.

The big news for today is the that Horrible Harry plans to try to move the horrid Wall Street Fascism bill forward in the Senate today. One of the pundits several days ago compared this to Sarbannes-Oxely and called it round II. Like all federal regulation designed “after the fact” that bill was a miserable failure.
The problem will all federal regulations designed “after the fact” they rarely address the real causes of a problem, particularly in the financial area. That is because politics always enters the picture. The Democrats want Fascist and Communist solutions and the Republicans are willing to go along with that as long is it is in a milder version; call it Fascism/Socialism-Lite. And the big Wall Street Firms, well they are willing to go along with it as well, as long as they get their own little quirks into the bill that give them a competitive edge over the competition. Of course that only works in the short term but that is all American managers and CEOs care about anymore.
So what do all these Regulations normally accomplish? Well S-O the only thing it did was to punish honest companies with a host of new intrusive paperwork issues and reporting requirements. You see, that is always the force of government regulation, more paper and more reporting. And what did S-O fix? NOTHING. You see the Enron debacle was caused by lax government oversight and enforcement of EXISTING law. Yes, ENRON broke existing law which is why the CFO and CEO went to JAIL.
There were no new laws needed, only better enforcement of the existing law. Instead of coming up with a bunch of new laws they should have fired a bunch of the assholes who were in the SEC and responsible for watching this shit.
That is the same thing going on with this current mess. It as caused almost exclusely by government action and regulation. What they need to do is repeal CRA, investigate and prosecute the crooks in Fanny and Freddie, disband F&F, and get out of the bailout business all together.
But like all the rest of the times that the Dems are in charge, that is not going to happen. Thanks 52%

This essay by Jonah G. is very nicely done.
What Kind of a Socialist is Barack Obama?
snip from 3rd page...
"President Obama’s health-care plan is a pristine example of this approach. He is long on record saying he would prefer a single-payer system if we could design one from scratch. But since he has to work from within the confines of the existing system, he has given us ObamaCare instead—which, again, is now merely a “critical first step.” It uses insurance companies as governmental entities, akin to utilities, to provide a now-mandatory government service. The insurance companies will make nominal government-decreed profits on top of government-decreed “fees” and “premiums” (the quotation marks are necessary given that rates will be set by government and enforced by the Internal Revenue Service).
Obama still scoffs at the suggestion that he is a socialist largely to delegitimize his opponents. During his address to House Republicans at their retreat in December 2009, Obama ridiculed Republicans for acting as if his health-care scheme were some “Bolshevik plot.” In responding to the “Tea Parties” organized to oppose the expansion of government, Obama has explicitly likened those who describe his policies as socialist to the “birther” conspiracy theorists who foolishly believe he was actually born outside the United States: “There’s some folks who just weren’t sure whether I was born in the United States, whether I was a socialist, right?”
He reserves for himself the mantle of technocrat, disinterested, pragmatic, pushed to use the powers of government by the failings of his predecessor and the madness of the free market. He is not interested in ideology; he is interested in doing “what works” for the greatest number of Americans (he has often said that his guiding insight to government’s role is the notion that we are all our brothers’ keepers). Indeed, Obama goes further and often insinuates that principled disagreement with his agenda is “ideological” and therefore illegitimate. In a speech on the eve of his inauguration, he proclaimed that “what is required is a new declaration of independence, not just in our nation, but in our own lives—from ideology and small thinking, prejudice and bigotry.” In other words, to borrow a phrase from Lionel Trilling, ideology is an irritable mental gesture."

,,,
Denying that you are an ideologue is not the same thing as proving the point. And certainly Obama’s insistence that ideology is something only his critics suffer from is no defense when stacked against the evidence of his actions. The “pragmatic” Obama is only interested in “what works” as long as “what works” involves a significantly expanded role for government. In this sense, Obama is a practitioner of the Third Way, the governing approach most successfully trumpeted by Blair, who claimed to have found a “third way” that rejected the false premises of both Left and Right and therebylocated a “smarter” approach to expanding government. The powerful appeal of this idea lies in the fact that it sounds as if its adherents have rejected ideological dogmatism and gone beyond those “false choices.” Thus, a leader can both provide health care to 32 million people and save money, or, as Obama likes to say, “bend the cost curve down.” But in not choosing, Obama is choosing. He is choosing the path of government control, which is what the Third Way inevitably does and is intended to do.'

Surprise surprise
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law is getting a mixed verdict in the first comprehensive look by neutral experts: More Americans will be covered, but costs are also going up.
Economic experts at the Health and Human Services Department concluded in a report issued Thursday that the health care remake will achieve Obama's aim of expanding health insurance — adding 34 million to the coverage rolls.
But the analysis also found that the law falls short of the president's twin goal of controlling runaway costs, raising projected spending by about 1 percent over 10 years. That increase could get bigger, since Medicare cuts in the law may be unrealistic and unsustainable, the report warned.

N.C. town bans thongs after getting e-mail - http://bit.ly/bmX7JU
KURE BEACH, N.C. -- A town council in North Carolina has banned thongs, with the mayor saying he wants to keep the area as close to "Mayberry with a beach" as possible.
The Star-News of Wilmington reported that the town council in Kure (Cure-EE) Beach voted Thursday to ban the swimwear. The move came after the police chief received an e-mail earlier in the week asking if the town's existing nude bathing ordinance allowed thongs.
The ordinance bans nudity or "insufficient clothing," and the man wanted to know if thongs were allowed for both men and women.

Vic, that was only the tip of the iceberg. Nobody could understand WTF types of tests that had to be performed to be in "compliance" with S/O so that called for an occupying army of consultants to be brought in to interpret the horseshit and sign off on it. People from every department were drafted to be part of this clusterfuck so otherwise productive efforts that would produce revenue were undercut. That this didn't immediately put the country into a recession is a testimonial to the resiliance of the US economy, which now Odumbfuck is trying to further undercut.

50 Yeah, the German government got their finacial and legal wizards working overtime to find a loophole in EU charter rules that essentially states that EU member states cannot provide the sort of loans the Greek bailout was to have. Only the IMF can do that. So yeah, let the Americans bail them out.
Of course the IMF loans carry certain guidelines as to what the loanee has to do (pension funds, that sort of thing), and the Greeks aren't too happy about that.

Going to the IMF is worse than getting a loan from the fucking Mob, since their terms make it impossible for the underlying economy to grow enough to make payments feasible without severe pain. The Germans were pretty fucking stupid to go along with the whole EU thing since they tend to take good care of their financial house compared to ass pounders like the Greeks. They should've known that from their experience linking the deutschmark to the franc but maybe their leveraged buyout of East Germany made them feel invulnerable to shit like that.

No? Eh, probably a wise decision -- they're too stupid to comprehend. Oh well, at some point everyone comes face to face with reality -- and it's often a bitch.
65 Exactly, so what sort of precedent is being set with the situation in Greece? My opinion: let the IMF (America) bail them out! Do you think this administration would possibly pressure the IMF to say "no"? Or that we could wring some concessions in return for the charity? No? Yeah, probably a wise answer to that one too.
PS. I thank goodness I have a German husband who really made for a bad German, but a great American (doesn't care for small bathing suits or anything remotely smacking of nudity, has sense of humor, hates soccer, loves baseball and hockey, believes in capitalism over socialism).

70 Well, the Germans have always been susceptible to getting into bed with the French from time to time... It has never ended really well.
There is a growing desire within the German populace to get rid of the Euro and either go back to the deutschmark or form a new currency. Of course, if Germany does that, then the whole EU experiment comes crashing down sooner rather than later. The situation with E. Germany has been a factor in the public perception of this Greek bailout -- they are still smarting from the bill for that, now they find themselves looking at a long line of the same.
Imho the only sane, intelligent country in Europe is Switzerland. I also don't give a rat's ass what happens to Europe in and of itself -- I do get concerned about what the implications for America are though. I got back from working in NYC on Wednesday and my wife was complaining about her car. So, I took it out for a spin and determined that the transmission was probably the problem. I dropped it off yesterday, and sure enough, it's the tranny.
So, I asked the guy what on earth could cause a transmission in 2006 Trailblazer with 70k miles to go. He told me that the fluid is electronically transferred to separate gears via a solenoid pack. Apparently, a solenoid burnt out causing a couple of gears to run dry and toasting the transmission in the process.
This got me thinking. I mean the goddamned check engine light comes on if the gas cap isn't screwed in tight but there's no warning for a burnt out electrical component that will kill the transmission?
I've bought Chevys for years. I was probably going to Ford to buy my next car for the obvious bailout reason, but I wasn't completely there yet. This episode sealed it for me.

Barofsky: GM Used TARP Money To Pay Back TARP Loan http://bit.ly/bOh32L
A top Senate Republican on Thursday accused the Obama administration of misleading taxpayers about General MotorsÂ’ loan repayment, saying the struggling auto giant was only able to repay its bailout money by dipping into a separate pot of bailout money.
Sen. Chuck Grassley’s charge was backed up by the inspector general for the bailout — also known as the Trouble Asset Relief Program, or TARP. Watchdog Neil Barofsky told Fox News, as well as the Senate Finance Committee, that General Motors used bailout money to pay back the federal government.
“It appears to be nothing more than an elaborate TARP money shuffle,” Grassley, the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said in a letter Thursday to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

as for the 550 billion, correct we never got an answer, But what always disturbed me is seeing Pelosi's and Reid"s smiling mugs coming out of that room waving the Tarp bill.
They were very happy, strange innit?

You know, I was talking to someone yesterday about how I'm considering getting a pre-1980's beater that's in decent running order simply to have a car without computers in it for when the SHTF. I can't do much beyond changing my oil, wipers, air filter (crap note to self get air filter) and putting in washer fluid right now but I could learn. What I can't learn is how to rebuild all the diagnostic equipment when the EMP takes all the electronics out.

Good for you! You might ask Rove where he hid the balls of the Republican Party. We are so damn sick of the squishes who won't come out and call Da Zero a socialist, and his policies socialist. Where is the leadership of the Republican Party? And when will Steele finally get the bum's rush? Silly fuck needs it bad.

I have a 401 k from a previous job. The HR person advised me to leave it alone until it recovered most, if not all, of the losses from 2007-8. Recently, it has risen above it's previous high. I'm expecting the same crash that most of you are, what should I do with the 401 k? Roll it into a credit union IRA? Cash it out, take the penalty? It's not huge, about 30 grand or so. Or merely switch it to the low risk mode?

The one time I'm sure a link won't work, it does post.
USAA says the Senate bill will screw them over big time.
However, the current Senate bill would disproportionally impact USAA because we are a unique and fully integrated association. USAA is not like the banks and other companies that helped bring down our economy, and we never took a penny of TARP funds. We do not engage in the harmful practices this legislation seeks to resolve.
If unchanged, the bill would:
Prevent USAA from managing the associationÂ’s portfolio as we have for the past 87 years.
Jeopardize our ability to continue offering many of our competitive products.
Limit our ability to return money to our members. Last year, USAA returned $1.2 billion to our members in the form of distributions, dividends, and bank rebates and rewards

Well, the Germans have always been susceptible to getting into bed with the French from time to time... It has never ended really well.
It's been pretty funny really; the Germans run a tight frugal ship and squeeze their citizens while the French are partying and spending their asses off while the franc maintains its purchasing power. Even more hilarious is how the French build nukes on the German border infuriating the greens.
I've never figured out what's in it for the Germans....

I'm that spooked right now. I hope I can buy my loft when it flips to condo, so I can get the fuck out of Dodge before the shit hits the fan.
If you measure the market versus Gold, the market has dropped.
Exactly. I'm not a gold bug, but this bill freaks me out. Plus, ATM machines in Germany and Switzerland dispense gold now. It's not that out there.
Perhaps itÂ’s not surprising, therefore, that Frankfurt Airport in Germany is the testing ground for a sophisticated new type of vending machine that sells gold bullion for investment purposes. As regards the typical trade-off between money laundering regulations and privacy, a camera monitors the machine. Presumably anyone hogging the machine to purchase large quantities will be regarded as suspicious.
Operator TG Gold-Super-Markt plans to roll out 500 of the machines in airports and railway stations across Europe, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the UK. They are also offering worldwide franchise licenses. The sophisticated machines sell everything from small bars intended as gifts, such as a 1 gram bar for about €30, to larger ingots aimed more at investors – a 10 gram bar costs about €245 – or gold coins such as the Maple Leaf or Kangaroo.

Depends on your situation. For tax purposes if it was a before tax plan the best thing to do is get the administrator from your previous job to roll it into an IRA type account that invests in a quality high dividend stock like a utility. (Duke, PGN, etc) If it is before taxes it can not go through your hands even if putting it in a tax deffered account.
If the IRA is after taxes I would just draw it all out and put it where you have other investments (hopefully high quality and none in banks)

Posted by: Rodent Freikorps at April 23, 2010 06:35 AM (dQdrY)
I've been thinking about that a little, Vic. My guess is that in an effort to make transmissions smaller and lighter they've engineered a work around where the gears don't sit in a bath of fluid, but instead have the fluid directed to the ones under load. It requires less fluid and the housing can be much smaller.
Mind you, it's only a guess, but I've never run into this problem before. My 1982 1/2 ton had 210 k when I got rid of it and the transmission was fine. Hell, I used to plow snow in VT with that old beast.

Is is just fear of the media that keeps them from standing up and calling b.s. or are they corrupt and fearful?
I really wonder.

Roll it over to a brokerage account then put it in cash and short-term bonds.
With an on-line brokerage account, you can re-balance pretty fast

Obama criticizes AZ imm law http://bit.ly/ahNyzj
PHOENIX - President Barack Obama on Thursday criticized a pending Arizona law that would make it a state crime to be in the United States illegally and require anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant to produce identification.
Such legislation could "threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans," the president said during a naturalization ceremony for members of the United States Armed Services.

And shocker of shockers. during their "fair and balanced" debate the Dem rep agreed with the Republican rep in the fact that Obama has told the Dems no compromise in a ploy to make the Republicans look bad.
This is Bill Clinton shut down the gov II. Except in this case I think it will backfire for two reasons, provided the Rs jump all over it.
First they need to get out in front of this on ALL the talk shows explaining whey this thing is a POS and why it doesn't address the real causes and second they need to explain why there is no bipartisanship in Washington.
That is what they need to do, but I will not hold my breath.

"OBAMA HEADS TO ASHEVILLE FOR LONG WEEKEND"
I'm glad he thinks he's got his shit together enough to take a long weekend. Maybe he'll even multi-task and get some golf in.
Surely there's no more important place for him to be than on vacation in late April like he's some kind of tax preparer.....
