"Goldman is NOT being thrown under the bus.  This is a rope-a-dope scam and Goldman is in on it.  A politically divided SEC has brought a very weak case that will never see a court room.  It will be settled with a wrist-slap.  In return for being made the whipping boy — which Goldman is very used to and even thrives on — it will get a "regulation" bill that enshrines too-big-to-fail status upon it and which will give it the same competitive advantages that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac enjoyed.  That is, an implicit taxpayer guarantee.  It will then be able to borrow at lower rates and engage in riskier behavior at a lower cost.  Meanwhile, smaller competitors will not enjoy this advantage, thereby making Goldman even more powerful and profitable.

Don't buy the spin on this. Obama is not throwing Goldman under the bus.  Goldman willingly jumped and will receive a huge payoff for its "sacrifice."  But the rest of us will pay.  This is all a political scam from start to finish.

118 I have friends who are Chi town cops (or were); they joke that an hour before their shift starts they break out in hives.  The retired ones have all moved as far away from the city as possible (one down here says anytime he gets north of Kankakee the hives come back).

The cops are completely at a loss -- there isn't anything they can feasibly accomplish (those that aren't crooked and corrupt that is).  And it isn't just Chicago -- the entire state is that way to some extent.

I've heard some crack they and the emt's won't go in some places until daylight -- to pull the bodies out.  Too dangerous to respond before then.  That's probably overstatement, but I don't know by how much.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - A boat captain says at least five people have died after a passenger boat capsized on a lake in eastern Congo.

Mirindi Lufongola, who was driving a commercial boat on Lake Kivu, says he rescued 29 passengers after the other boat capsized Tuesday. He says nearly a hundred passengers were aboard the boat traveling from Idjwi island to the city of Goma.

Lufongola said the 29 passengers were hanging on to empty jerrycans and bags full of embers. The survivors told him the boat capsized because of a strong wave.

Congo is a vast country of jungles and huge rivers in Central Africa with little more than 300 miles (480 kilometers) of paved road. Many people prefer to take boats even if they do not know how to swim.

I don't keep up with him on a regular basis, so I'm in the dark.  Because I read a smart, military blog, I know about Costco's freeze-dried food program, but I wondered how it compared to on-line places that sell the same thing or to Food Insurance (that Beck advertises).

The MSM is smoking crack if they think Labour is going to "rally."  The recent Lib Dem success might enable them barely to hold onto a plurality of seats in a hung Parliament, despite coming third in the polls, but that's only because of their elections system.  The public were always going to vote against buffoonish, corrupt Labour this election, but they always have had at least two alternate choices.  It's not the presence of the third party that's unique, but the viability of a third party, due to the uselessness of a Conservative Party that ceased being a rational alternative to Labour and became Labour Lite after Thatcher left.  Why vote Tory?  Why not give a new bunch, whoever they are, a try?  How could they be worse than the bunch that caused the banking crisis and Iraq and immigrant problems and claimed their second homes, duck ponds, and condoms as reimbursable at taxpayers' expense?

THAT should be the Lesson of the British Election.

The Lib Dems got a huge boost from the first TV debate a couple weeks ago, where their leader (not as hang-dog as Gordon Brown, not as smooth and posh as Tory David Cameron), who was a national joke as a synonym for futile anonymity up until the debate, made his nuanced argument that he isn't Brown or Cameron, who were busily sniping away at each other.  Most Brits can't tell you much about Nick Klegg or Lib Dem policies (which are pretty much hard left/welfare state with a bit of Personal Civil Liberties thrown in, but less in a "Tea Party" way and more of a "Keep The Cops Away From My Weed!" kind of way), but he's started to get more media scrutiny in the last week.  You'd expect that to drive his numbers down, though he's held pretty firm to second place after the second debate this weekend.

I spoke with wheat farmers last week who stated unequivocally that when Mt St. Helens blew in 1980, they had record crops for several years.  All that ash was actually beneficial.  So much for fear. But I am prepared! Fearless!

It is actually frightening to watch.  They all really must think that the average American citizen is a dumb rube with little practical education who will swallow anything that they decide to tell them.
