I just got called a neo nazi after bringing up the mega mosque and asked if I'd have a problem with Mormons putting up a compound next to my house and marrying their 12 yos. off.  Somehow I should be shocked, but sadly it doesn't.I laughed too hard to get really offended -- you can't pay for that kind of stupid reply that writes its own rebuttal.

Then she called my daughter a nazi and a stupid knuckledragger...my daughter just got back from a deployment involving the religion of rest in peace...that kinda pissed me off.

The country is probably lost if people like that stupid scrunt are in the majority or even a healthy, populous minority (who call our soldiers nazis, while defending the religion of rest in peace as a "mostly quiet and devout faith" and disparaging Mormons for marrying off little girls, while defending the RofRIP's "traditionally humane practices").

17 Salt causes obesity in much the same way thongs cause earthquakes.

The argument from the nanny State food police is that it causes high blood pressure which leads to heart disease.  That myth has been largely debunked by all the most recent studies.

Salt intake only causes high blood pressure in people who are salt sensitive. All of the crap they are pushing on this is just like AGW.

[. . . ]

Even as Stern turns his attention to the nation's spending problem, his own union's spending -- notably the multimillion-dollar tab from internal battles he has waged -- is drawing sharp criticism from within the labor movement. Stern has expanded his union, but his decisions have left it, and the labor movement as a whole, financially strapped, according to disclosure reports that have received little scrutiny.

41 Lemon Kitten: IÂ’m on FiorinaÂ’s mailing list. Given how quickly Fiorina began bragging about PalinÂ’s endorsement, IÂ’d guess the two of them discussed it first. I keep a pretty close eye on Memeorandum and various RSS feeds through the day, and as I recall, I still heard about the endorsement from FiorinaÂ’s e-mail before reading about it anywhere else. Anecodtally, it did help Fiorina with this Californian. There is a very short list of politicians whose endorsement would make me more likely to vote for a candidate; Palin is one of them. (If Christie were to endorse someone, IÂ’d give his recommendation serious consideration, too.)

Where's the oil? Model suggests much may be gone

NEW ORLEANS — For a spill now nearly half the size of Exxon Valdez, the oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster is pretty hard to pin down.

Satellite images show most of an estimated 4.6 million gallons of oil has pooled in a floating, shape-shifting blob off the Louisiana coast. Some has reached shore as a thin sheen, and gooey bits have washed up as far away as Alabama. But the spill is 23 days old since the Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20 and killed 11 workers, and the thickest stuff hasn't shown up on the coast.

So, where's the oil? Where's it going to end up?

[ . . .]

Larry McKinney, director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said the Deepwater Horizon spill reminds him of the last catastrophic oil flood in the Gulf.

In 1979, Mexico's Ixtoc I in the western Gulf blew out and spewed about 420,000 gallons of oil a day for nine months. Large quantities of oil did not reach Texas beaches.

"This was a problem we ran into with Ixtoc, we never found the oil," McKinney said. "But I think even today if you dig down in some sandy beaches you can find a layer of Ixtoc oil."

81 As part of "Fix-It-All-Friday", I offer this (a headline somewhere):

With the launch of the space shuttle Atlantis on its final flight today, museums are starting to fight over the three remaining shuttles. The Orlando Sentinel reports NASA does not want to tick off Congress-critters, whom some strangely think never seem to have the maturity to look beyond their own districts, and retaliate like Agamemnon when they don't get their way. Myself, I would want discussion on that issue, as I would not want to unfairly castigate these fine personages who always think of others first, though I must admit I might be able to see why others might think so.

However, with 21 museums wanting shuttles and only a few available, not everybody can be happy. So here is what I think:

NASM--Discovery or Atlantis
Palmdale--Enterprise, new museum.
KSC-Endeavour or Discovery
JSC-Discovery or Endeavour
MSFC--Pathfinder stays

The simulator equipment might be farmed out as consolation prizes, or stays as part of the JSC tour. If a Lunar module simulator is still at the Cape or JSC, send it to the Intrepid museum.

And there you have it.

IÂ’m sure the oil spill is very bad and IÂ’m sorry for those people who live in gulf coast states who will be affected by it, but IÂ’m wondering is it a huge catastrophe the government is covering up and the media is helping them cover up, or is the real problem that it is not much of a catastrophe at all. IÂ’m asking because usually by this point wouldnÂ’t we be bombarded by images of poor oil covered sea creatures and beaches closed signs and stuff like that?

I know that sounds weird but seriously I canÂ’t tell if the government wanted it to be a huge catastrophe and it isnÂ’t so they are spinning it, or if the government wants it to go away but it is a giant catastrophe that will hurt the Obama administration. It really sucks to know the government is lying somehow but you just canÂ’t quite figure out how.

In fairness I knew a woman who had to rely on food stamps who was actually very frugal and made good food choices for her family.  I would argue that the difference between her and the stereotypical welfare queen would be that she was forced to draw welfare out of circumstance rather than choice (marriage went south in a very bad way, job lost, two kids to care for by herself).  Her attempts to get off of welfare (and get the social workers and their lame "help" out of her life) were legendary (she made it; I hope that's still the case, as she deserves to be free to lead her life if anyone does).

An important observation that resulted from the Exxon Valdez oil spill was that natural cleaning processes, on both sheltered and exposed beaches, were in many cases very effective at degrading oil. It took longer for some sections of shoreline to recover from some of the invasive cleaning methods (hot water flushing in particular) than from the oiling itself.

I took the course work for a graduate minor in an environmental science which included an environmental engineering class. Most of that course consisted on containing and cleaning up bad stuff. I was surprised at what I was taught about oil spills.

When there is an oil spill in the ocean several things happen:

*The lightest fraction evaporates

*The next lightest fraction dissolves in the water

*The next lightest fraction form a slick that is attacked by microbes. It may drift ashore or be eaten up/dispersed before reaching shore. Once ashore it will continue to biodegrade.

*The heaviest fractions form globules that may float to shore or sink to the sea bottom.

Microbes eat oil. After all, oil is hydrocarbons and life on earth is carbon based. There are lots of variables that go into the speed in which microbes digest oil, the two most important being temperature and oxygen level. Microbes also digest lighter fractions faster than heavier ones. Ultimately, all of the oil will get eaten by microbes. The longest residues will be the heaviest fractions that sink to the sea floor where temperatures and oxygen levels are low. Over centuries, however, they'll probably get eaten too.

Today, Rep. Chaffetz (R-UT), along with Rep. Issa (R-CA) sent a letter to David Kappos, the Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, as well as Michael Williams, President and CEO of Fannie Mae, seeking information concerning a patent issued to Fannie Mae regarding a residential Cap and Trade system.

On June 7, 2005, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued Patent No. 6,904,336 for a “System and Method for Residential Emissions Trading.” The patent was assigned to the Federal National Mortgage Association (“Fannie Mae”) and CO2e.com, LLC of New York. The patent lists former Fannie Mae Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Franklin D. Raines as the primary inventor. Former Fannie Mae executives Scott Lesmes and Robert Sahadi are also listed as inventors.      “I have serious questions about why Fannie Mae, back in 2005, was working on a Cap and Trade scheme,” said Rep. Chaffetz. “Why would they be spending their resources on something that is well outside of the scope of Fannie MaeÂ’s charter? We want to see all the information relating to the patents issued to these ‘inventiveÂ’ former Fannie Mae executives?”   “Having ventured far beyond sub-prime lending policies, Fannie Mae appears to have served as a full-blown liberal think tank for crony-capitalist ideas,” said Rep. Issa. “While the crony-capitalist Democrats who ran Fannie Mae like Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson used these kinds of ideas to enrich themselves, it was the American taxpayers who were left holding the bag after they failed.  ItÂ’s disturbing that Fannie Mae executives were positioning themselves in 2005 for financial gain from an Obama Administration cap-and-trade system, but given the huge amount of campaign contributions Fannie Mae poured over President Obama it should be no surprise.”

171 Perhaps one reason why Devore and even Campbell are now outpolling Fiorino might be because, during the recent televized debate between Fiorino, Devore and Campbell, Ms Fiorino was caught off guard and and she became noticeably flustered that the issue was raised that, when she was CEO of Hewlett-Packard, she co-sponsored and authorized the sales of huge quantities of computers, printers, peripherals, spare parts and even various kinds of software to Syria and to Iran and to Lebanon in a sneaky deal to get around the ban on selling our technologies to those countries; a sleazy deal that was negotiated to compensate for the decline of sales of H-P products in the USA and in Canada; a decline for which Ms. Fiorina was responsible with some of here other hare-brained policies, also.   Like Obama, she is an affirmative action candidate, who doesn't have the proper credentials or the qualifications to hold the office to which she aspires  (in our opinion).

I'm not so confident that our Constitutional cjecks and balances are going to be restored anytime soon.  I don't think they'll come back into fashion in time.

The Precedent is on a suicide bombing run, and he's determined to take as much of the US and the West down with him.  Look for him launching all-out on the race-baiting.  He knows that that is our most vulnerable spot, and utilizes his only "talent".

The closeout crew is leaving the gantry, taking the elevator down to ground level and moving 4 miles away to safety.  They are the contractors who close the hatch, pressurize the cabin, and perform leak checks. In the wide shots of the shuttle on the pad, look for a long arm extending from the gantry with a big white box at the end.  That's the white room, where those shots are coming from.  It will retract shortly before launch.

265 In my world, once the stuff that goes bang is ready, you leave.

Well, the stuff that goes bang is there from the very beginning of the shuttle-stacking process. The fuel in the solid rocket boosters--long white rockets on either sides-- is always present and flammable.  Once you light it, there's no turning it off.

This is no surprise. From Yahoo's front page:

Legendary CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite allegedly collaborated with anti-Vietnam War activists in the 1960s, going so far as to offer advice on how to raise the public profile of protests and even pledging CBS News resources to help pull off events, according to FBI documents obtained by Yahoo! News.

The documents, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, say that in November 1969, Cronkite encouraged students at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., to invite Maine Sen. Edmund Muskie to address a protest they were planning near Cape Kennedy (now known as Cape Canaveral). Cronkite told the group's leader that Muskie would be nearby for a fundraiser on the day of the protest, and said that "CBS would rent [a] helicopter to take Muskie to and from site of rally," according to the documents.

Oh yeah, the supercold hydrogen and oxygen in the external tank-- actually, it's MUCH safer than what's in the solids.  It has to be fed through the main engines to do much damage, although the hydrogen can be dangerous if left to build up.  But me, if I were on that pad, I'd be much more concerned about those two Roman candles and the hypergolic fuels in the orbital engines.  The two of those come into contact under the wrong circumstances and..... no fun.

276 Just saw another story (this quoting Pelosi) about Americans being in an "anti-incumbent" mood - it's the talking point of the week (even at NRO).

Spreading the anger around along with the wealth.  Like I said earlier this week, Republicans and independents aren't "anti-incumbent" toward Christie right now - or in Ryan's district.

We're not "anti-incumbent."  We're "anti-Democrat" and "anti-business-as-usual right-hand-washing the left hand."

Politicians who get that aren't being ambushed by crazed mobs of Tea Party zealots brandishing machetes - oh, wait, neither is Pelosi or anyone else.

Cronkite covered the Battle of the Bulge in 1944-45 and the Tet Offensive in 1968.  The battles were similar in that the enemy caught us off guard in that they struck us with more power than we thought that they had but we beat back the attacks inflicting enormous casualties on the enemy.  Cronkite concluded in 1944 that therefore we should redouble our efforts and win the war.  In 1968 he concluded that therefore we should immediately surrender.

More Government Encroachment: http://tinyurl.com/324o663

Attorneys for the federal government have argued in a lawsuit pending in federal court in Iowa that individuals have no "fundamental right" to obtain what food they choose.

"There is no 'deeply rooted' historical tradition of unfettered access to foods of all kinds," states the document signed by U.S. Attorney Stephanie Rose, assistant Martha Fagg and Roger Gural, trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice.

"Plaintiffs' assertion of a 'fundamental right to their own bodily and physical health, which includes what foods they do and do not choose to consume for themselves and their families' is similarly unavailing because plaintiffs do not have a fundamental right to obtain any food they wish," the government has argued.

318 i live very close to Johnson Space Center, south of Houston.  I can't count how many people i know who work for NASA or one of its subcontractors.  if you don't live in a NASA community, it may be hard to understand just how many people whose jobs are on the line and many lives & families will be affected by the budget cuts.

Friends & neighbors emailed me about a counter-rally planned for this evening to protest an event which is a thinly-disguised photo-op propaganda mission to cheer for the Man Child In Chief.

From the opposition's flyer:  "Democrats are blaming President Bush for the NASA budget cuts instead of the true culprit, the budget shoved at us by Obama.  These Democrats are pretending to support NASA by holding a very showy rally, using pom-poms and platitudes to clean up the blood-letting as Obama rips the heart out of NASA.

I hadn't decided to attend until i learned that media-hog, idiot, and poseur Sheila Jackson Lee would be present.  Now i'm going for sure.  This woman is the poster child for all that is wrong with liberals, Democrats, progressives, D.C., etc.  On top of all those superior qualifications, she is an out-of-control narcissistic ego-maniac, just like the prez she so adores.

Bottom line:  whether you're pro- or anti- the space program, i see this as yet another example of the One's petty, mean-spirited nature and more proof of his complete and utter lack of any discernible leadership or management skills.
