3 The initial headlines over at Fox this morning was that Bambi had extended the moratorium on drilling for another 6 months.

When is a news organization going to actually print that there was never any new permits issued anyway.  They never intended to allow new drilling.

Oh well, if Fox will not do it nobody will. Fox is all "greenie" just like the rest of them.

This was sent to me with some explanation by someone with military connections.

LINK

This is part of the videotape showing the Russian Navy commandos on the Somalian pirate ship. You may remember that the pirates captured a Russian oil tanker. The EuroUnion navy that patrols these waters could not interfere because there could be casualties.

All explanations are in Russian and, with a single exception when a wounded pirate tells something in English, all conversations are between the commandos - in Russian. Sorry if you don't understand Russian but the pictures speak for themselves.

The soldiers freed their compatriots, moved all the pirates to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives, and took seven Somalian pirates. Then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates on it.

This is the time tested method of getting along with pirates. I did note that the Russian Commander seems to speak near perfect English, including the proper use of profanity.

What would be really helpful to a) shutdown the oil industry, and b) advance a new 'green' energy industry?

-- a disastrous oil spill, perhaps?

Posted by: Dr Benton Quest at May 27, 2010 05:48 AM (9RRbi)

9 The other stupid thing about this is by shutting down U.S. drilling you actually increase the probability of an oil spill because the foreign oil companies just come and drill with fewer regulations (assuming regulations actually work, which is probably not true).

10 #6  The Russians don't mess around.

Here's what happened to a few jihadis after they kidnapped some Soviet diplomats in Beiruit:

The former Soviet state has never been hesitant about meting out retribution on Islamic hardliners. When Islamic fundamentalists kidnapped four Soviet diplomats in Beirut on 30 September 1985, at the height of the foreign hostage crisis in Lebanon, and demanded Moscow press its client state Syria to stop shelling Sunni Muslim militiamen in the northern port of Tripoli, the KGB responded with characteristic vigour. After clandestine negotiations failed to secure the men's release, Soviet agents grabbed half a dozen fundamentalists in West Beirut and reportedly sliced off a few of their fingers, sending the severed digits to the fundamentalist leadership with the message: "Release our people or you'll get your people back piece by piece."

Yahoo is running this joke from Slime Magazine on its front page

But in the last month, things have started to look up for the bloodied one-time professional boxer. Reid finally passed a bill popular with Nevadans: financial regulatory reform. He also convinced the Obama Administration to cut all funding to Yucca Mountain, a controversial project to house spent nuclear fuel in Nevada, a plan detested by locals.

Reid has risen in the polls from lows in the mid-30s in January to the low-40s now, though he still trails all three of his potential opponents. But a silver lining for him has been the disarray in the June 8 GOP primary race.

I said this on a thread a few days ago. The North can't go to war, for it knows it will be invaded from the north and the south. China will never allow for a unified Korea under South Korean leadship. This isn't Germany. The Soviet Union was crumbling and couldn't keep Eastern Germany propped up. China on the other hand has never been more powerful.

I suspect this whole thing blows over.

Rushbabe, don't forget the whole 9/11 Red Cross debacle, where they kept most of the money and didn't give it to 9/11 related problems.

My family hates the Red Cross as well.  We love the salvation army. My uncle served three tours in Vietnam(36 months), compared to John Kerry's one tour(of four months).

anyway, in his entire time there he only got one package from the Red Cross, and it had a pair of swimming trunks and goggles in it. Yes that's right, trunks and goggles. The guy is in Vietnam and they gave him swimming gear. However, he would receive multiple packages from the red cross with practical things like lip balm, sun screen, tooth paste, certain foods.

Therefore my family only donates to the Salvation Army.  F*ck the Red Cross.

From the Washington Examiner:

Three years ago, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., leaned on hedge funds to lobby more. The funds soon hired his banking staffer as a lobbyist. She began raising money for Schumer. Now he's championing financial regulation that would benefit these hedge funds. "Racket" might be the right word here.

Here's the story: In January 2007, the month Democrats took control of Congress, Schumer invited hedge funds executives to dinner, where, the New York Times reported, he "had some simple advice for the billionaires in his midst: If you want Washington to work with you, you had better work better with one another."

Until then, hedge funds had largely minded their own business. But in the 2008 elections, they tripled their previous contributions to politicians, with Schumer and Barack Obama as their favorites, along with other Senate Democrats (Schumer was head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee).

But more to Schumer's point, the hedge funds shifted their lobbying into high gear. After spending less than half a million in 2006, they spent more than $6 million in 2007.

83 Short unprecedented irony comment: For an administration that promised to succeed with Smart Diplomacy where Bush failed, the world seems to be unprecedentedly screwed up. For an administration that promised unprecedented transparancy, there certainly appears to be some pretty unprecedented opacity. For an administration that promised unprecedented unification, there seems to be some pretty unprecedented division - everywhere. For an administration that promised unprecedented bipartisanship, there seems to be some pretty unprecedented partisanship. For an administration that implied unprecedented truthfulness, there certainly seems to be a pretty unprecedented amount of lies. For an administration that promised that unprecedented government spending would lead to the creation of jobs, there seem to be an unprecedented lack of jobs. For an administration that promised an unprecedented level of ethics, there certainly seems to be an unprecented level of corruption. Just sayin'

If I could jump in here, I think the problem with aggressive regulation of "distractions" in grade school is that the students never need to develop the ability to concentrate.  You could not believe the number of students in my sophomore college class who required special accommodation when we administered in class, closed book exams.  It was a class of 400 that had four exams per semester.  We used to have to schedule about 5-10 separate exam periods in "quiet rooms" plus accommodate about a couple of dozen kids with extra time based on the kids' claims of being unable to sit in a quiet lecture hall for 60 minutes to take an exam.

I am sympathetic to the fact that some people have ADD - my sister had it (as well as a form of math dyslexia) back in the day (the '60s) before it was widely known to exist (she had to go to Kennedy-Krieger institute to get diagnosed).  But I think it's overly diagnosed and I think that the same kids who supposedly cannot pay attention and focus on the teacher are the ones who zone out everything else on the planet when they're gaming or texting.

Here's an idea.  Maybe the kids who get As aren't necessarily smarter than the C students -- maybe they just learned self-discipline.

If a kid is disruptive in class, the teacher should address it.  I see no need for banning jewelry.  (This is quite different from the clothing regulations that have to do with gang signs and whatnot.)

Posted by: Y-not at May 27, 2010 07:50 AM (Kn9r7)

142 HeatherRadish, well if I were in charge I would focus on the behavior and not on the object.  So chewing gum in class is okay with me as long as the kids aren't smacking it or blowing bubbles.  I can see why, though, one would want to focus on the object: the rule is easier to enforce and it's less likely to get the parents upset.  But that's just me.  I'm glad I don't have to deal with the cretins, personally.

Gee, that salary - even in 1999 dollars - doesn't shock me.  The CEO of an organization as large as the Red Cross should be well-compensated.

Just because something is a charity, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be run as professionally as a for-profit business.  If you are going to get top CEOs, you need to pay market value.  The national HQ for the Red Cross is in DC.  That salary does not go all that far in that area.

167 174 Heh, just heard the government's offshore drilling oversight manager was relieved before testifying before Congress. Birnbaum previously had no experience in oil or management.

Heard this off the radio, but here's the CNN link. Wonder if she got let go before she said something silly.

But...But...But, she went to Brown and is a Harvard trained lawyer!!

Birnbaum received her Juris Doctor from Harvard University in 1984 and her A.B. degree, magna cum laude, from Brown University in 1979. She was Editor in Chief of the Harvard Environmental Law Review, Vol. 8.

168 129 You know what's really distracting? The 25 year old hottie keeping her books on the floor and bending over everymorning in front of my 16 year old son. My husband thinks this is a good thing for his maturation process or something like that.

You definately misspelled a word there.

Cocaine is a great drug.

That's nothing. During one summer when I was 18, the next door neighbor- a stone cold hottie/exhibitionist- capped off her nights with self love by the glow of a lamp in full view of my 3rd floor window. I walked around like Omar the tentmaker for months. Without the ill side effects.

I had two words for that gal. Good sport.

170 "Editor in Chief of the Harvard Environmental Law Review, Vol. 8." Heh heh heh, these "whiz kids" are looking dumber and dumber every day. Can't wait to see the press conference. I'll be hoping for a Sestak question after all the BP stuff. Also, I'm gonna be looking for any questions that seem to have been written by the W.H. That "closed door" meeting that Gibbs had with the press corps may very well have ushered in a whole new level of Pravda-ism.

174 Good Lord. Shirts tucked in? What a bunch of pikers. Hell, I got my last ass whuppin for locking the football coach in the football field. Damn place had a 8' high chain link fence topped with 3 starnds of barbed wire around it. He had to climb out. Tore his dress pants all to Hell. I didn't get caught, never confessed, nobody saw me to rat me out, but they called me into the Principle's office and gave me 8 "licks" because they considered me the prime suspect.

176 Hi Y-not, so I actually looked up some info on the BP chemical dispersants, and they are Corexit 9500A and Corexit 9527A, they are proprietary formulations so I can't tell you what's in them, other than what's on the safety sheet which says "organic sulfonic acid salt".

180 188 Hi Y-not, so I actually looked up some info on the BP chemical dispersants

Yeah, I did the same.

The EPA sheet didn't make it sound all that bad.  I mean, it seems to be an approved dispersant.

I didn't take the time to look into the university studies the company cited.

Anyway, it seems to me that because oil spills impact on more than simply a chemical level, ie: they're physical properties also cause problems, dispersing it into biodegradeable droplets (as claimed by the company) is worth pursuing, even if there is some sort of toxicity from the dispersants.  Dilution and (possible) volatility can handle the latter, but they would not really affect the former blobs of oil.

181 @192
Plus, there may very well be one of those hydrocarbon-eating 'bugs' to clean up the dispersant.
