a photoshop of the "Obama Rising from the Sea" with an oil-soaked unicorn in the background would be nice. Putting some oil on "The One" works, too.
The worst thing about the oil spill?
It makes walking on water that much more difficult for Obama.

Cuccinelli, a Republican who is separately suing the federal government over regulation of carbon emissions, issued the school a civil subpoena late last month probing "possible violations" of the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act by the former U.Va. professor. Mann, now a professor at Penn State, is famous for creating the controversial "hockey stick" graph charting a spike in global temperatures.
Its about time. This is the best thing that could have happened. But notice how the paper had to stick in that bit about a "Republican".
Yes this is pure political.

From an article posted today on Politico:
This is what a terrorist can look like: a balding white man in his 40s. Thanks to an alert street vendor and an NYPD officer who ushered in local and federal law enforcement, the Times Square would-be bomber was a bust. So far. They saw the parked car, engine running, hazards blinking, driver departing — in other words, they profiled behavior, not people. Take note, Arizona.BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA, EAT A DICK POLITICO!

During the Duke Lax case the libtard professors did not feel like their jumping to conclusions was wrong because they insisted that their world view was correct. The lax boys, because of the american culture, were guilty because they fit into the lefty meme.
The lebtard teabagger bomber theory would still be correct in this case even though it was in actuality a wacky packy because the meme still fits in their minds. It just happened to be not a racist anti-health tea bagger. The fact that it wasn't is just accidental. The tea baggers just haven't gotten caught yet--everybody knows they really want to blow up NYC.

Via Insty, a Tapscott piece that tells us what we already know: most people think that Bammer's so-called "National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform" is a smokescreen for tax hikes, not spending cuts. Nor are the citizens wrong. Bammer has run up a huge deficit with the help of a compliant Congress, but the bill is coming due pretty soon, and it's going to be ugly. Bammer remembers his "no new taxes" promises on the stump very well, but he also knows that higher taxes are an absolute necessity to keep his statist boat afloat. What to do? Answer: appoint a "bipartisan commission" and have them recommend ugly tax hikes. This way he can claim that the tax hikes weren't really his idea.
It's such an obvious ploy that absolutely no one is being taken in by it, but at this point the Democrats must figure that the midterms are going to be an epochal disaster no matter what they do, so they might as well try to run the table before the elections come around. AP over at Hot Air made an interesting prediction that any vote on a tax bill would happen after the elections but before the new Congresscritters are seated, ostensibly to give the defeated Blue Dogs time to "vote their consciences" before they head home. It sounds plausible to me -- it's a variant of the "they can only hang you once" theory.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - An off-duty Pittsburgh police detective is charged with choking a fellow motorist and threatening him with a gun after a minor collision.
State police say Det. Bradley Walker kicked another driver's car then broke a window to reach in and grab the man by the throat in an apparent road rage incident Saturday night in Pittsburgh. Investigators say Walker then pulled his car in front of the alleged victim's car and brandished a handgun.
See, they were right when they said things like this will happen with these illegal immigrant laws. He probably suspected him of being an illegal immigrant.

Another gem from the politico article:
If, as seems unlikely, the bomb is linked to South Asian or Middle Eastern terrorists, questions will again arise as to whether the Department of Homeland Security is doing all it can do to keep us safe. If, as I believe is much more likely, the bomb was placed by a right-wing lunatic, it seems to me that questions need to be raised as to whether the right-wing media bear some responsibility for stoking the delusions of such people through their relentless and often unfounded attacks on the Obama administration and the federal government.

I used to sit through weekly meetings with all department heads when I worked for an aerospace company. Three hours of buzzwords, excuses, meaningless blather. Struggle to stifle the yawns and stay awake. Complete waste of time, but it was part of the plant manager's reason for existence, I suppose.
Much better now, my current employer uses the time to inspire us with the latest "management fad techniques" she just trained in. Usually takes an hour for that. Then follows that with another hour of admonishments to be more productive, and oh yeah, what is most important is all that fucking paperwork. Paperwork is required by the government in aerospace, but here it's just a passionate pass-time.

The Eurocrats thought they could make a super-state to rival the US.
In the beginning it was simply intended to lash Germany and France together so that the Teutonic "third time is a charm" tendency would be dampened.
And then they overreached and the synergies did not materialize.
A lot of lessons learned to take away from that.
Not an effective paradigm.

It's been sinusoidal for the last week.
The stock market has done pretty well, but the bond market has been in the dumper. I think that's what caught a lot of analysts by surprise, in a way -- they figured out how to "game" the major stock markets to keep the numbers up, so investors expressed their ire in the bond and commercial-paper markets. Which is what caused the Greek disaster over the past couple of weeks.
As many, many people have pointed out: the problem isn't debt, per se; it's spending (specifically with regard to entitlements). Lots of Western nations are spending as if they expect a doubling of their GDP within five years, when in fact the best growth most can hope for (if any) is in the 3-5% range.
Analogy time:
Let's say you earn $20,000 per year but spend $19,000 of it on various things. That leaves only $1,000 for investing or saving. If you only make $15,000 per year but also only spend $10,000, that leaves you $5,000 to invest. The latter income is much lower in absolute terms, but can result in higher savings and investment depending on how the spending part of the equation is managed. This matters if both people lose their jobs -- the latter person would be much better positioned than the former because more money has been laid away or invested. More net income does not always equate to more wealth over the long term.
Out-of-control spending is a killer, particularly on a sovereign scale. It's far better to have a $500B government with $500B in debt than a $1T government with no debt at all.

Never a good idea to mix shards of iron with clay.
They saw how successful America was with the federal model, and wanted all the benefits of a monetary union but without giving up national sovereignty. Well, all of us skeptics knew at the time that this was impossible: America's model works because America's economic model is much more fluid: if you don't like the lay of the land in New York, you can haul ass for Alabama; if you find Georgia not to your liking, you can head out for Ohio. American workers can work in any state. Not so in Europe -- the economies and labor markets of the EU nations are too sclerotic to make a single monetary policy work. It worked only as long as the global economy experienced no significant disruptions; at the first sign of real trouble, the Euro shit the bed. As we all knew it would.

I've read the dietary restrictions he's forcing on New Yorkers come from his own insecurity about his weight. So Pakistan would be perfect--no high-fructose corn syrup, no transfats, no foie gras, minimal pastries...

if the Greeks are rioting over cutbacks and unions losing wages, just think how it is going to be in places like Detroit when the Peggy Joseph's get their welfare and subsidies cut.
I have predicted that our collapse will start in those inner cities and spread outward to the 'burbs.

Now prosecutors hate loose ends. Detest embarrassing moments in the court room. Investigators will stick an electron microscope up this dude's ass. There is a slim chance that someone else was involved and if so, they will find them. A minor player or two. If that.

This is just one more replay of Europe trying to copy the US, but doing it in an exceedingly dumb and insidious way that really preserves nothing but the shallowest of characteristics that they were trying to copy. We saw this start with the French Revolution which, even having had the American Revolution and our consequent Constitutional structure as their guide, the French decided that they were going to do it "perfectly" - even if it went against the actual spirit of the US Constitutional structure and style. So France, in their stupid effort to out-America America, goes through the nastiest political takeover of the modern era (the paradigm for all murderous purges after) and end up with a dictator. The EU will be the same.
Meanwhile, here in America, we have the Democrats thinking they are the second coming of the French Revolution, because dems are just too dumb to learn from history, voting in a person with no American sensibilities, whatsoever, who holds us and our institutions in utter contempt.
Very sad, pathetic stuff.

I suspect that's going to be the last thing our moral and intellectual betters *snort, guffaw* consider as a solution. a) it's raaaaaacist. b) they crave the power over people's lives.

It will not be done as a "solution". It will be done because they are bankrupt. They will either cut the payments or the payments will cut themselves as the money becomes worthless.

Yes, that is entirely possible - though I still think we will find that he had help either gathering some pieces, loading, scouting, ... It might be that much of the "intelligence" was done earlier and part of whatever went on when he was in Pakistan.

I'm not so sure about this part. This attack was actually par for the course for jihadi and arab terrorists. Carlos the Jackal used to screw up his operations all along the way. Dud bombs. Missed kills. All sorts of problems. Even the 9/11 cells were pretty pathetic in how they organized and carried out their plot. We would have broken the whole thing wide open if Moussaoui's computer had been looked at, and there were several times the 9/11 plotters had run-ins with police and just did creepy, suspicious things.
This is why jihadis usually stick to suicide missions. They just aren't competent enough to carry out normal, non-suicide operations. If this Pakistani had been on a suicide run that bomb would have gone off, for sure.
We'll see what information comes down about all this, though I really don't trust the feds to do a good job on this - having seen the crap they came up with for the other terrorist attacks.

Another interesting post about how the public pension debacle is different from the Social Security and Medicare issues. Upshot: the public pension funds have the assets (mostly), but get the interest-rate calculations wrong; SS and Medicare get the interest-rate right, but don't have the assets.
This is the problem with public-sector pensions. Most assume a completely unrealistic rate of return between 7.5 and 8.5 percent, when in reality the rate of return is likely to be more in the 5-6% range. (This is a big difference; don't be fooled by the seemingly-small disparity. Even half a percentage difference in return means billions of dollars more or less in the fund.) Most public fund managers insist that returns in the 9% range over 30 years are not only possible but likely, given past performance, but I think they're whistling past the graveyard. America experienced an age of explosive growth that is very unlikely to be sustained in the coming decades for a number of reasons: more global competition, a globalized market, high debt-to-GDP ratio, an aging workforce, and huge entitlement burdens (which means a correspondingly higher tax burden).

AP crying a river for poor widdle Barry
WASHINGTON – Unpredictable and tough to solve, the stack of problems on President Barack Obama's desk is growing unwieldy. It's presenting him with a tough juggling act.
Two wars, a financial crisis, lingering high unemployment and an exhausting battle over health care. And that was just the start.
Now throw in an environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and an attempted car bombing in Times Square.
Poor poor widdle Barry things are just soooooo difficult for him. Maybe he needs to spend more time golfing or on vacation
