WASHINGTON – More confident employers stepped up job creation in April, expanding payrolls by 290,000, the most in four years. The jobless rate rose to 9.9 percent as people streamed back into the market looking for work.

The hiring of 66,000 temporary government workers to conduct the census helped overall payroll growth last month. However, private employers — the backbone of the economy — boosted jobs, too.

So as more people become encouraged to look for work again the unemployment numbers will get worse because it will reveal just how many people are really out of work.

I just read the headline story over at Drudge from Yahoo about the unempoyment rate jumping to 9.9%

How can anybody put out a story that touts a .2% increase in unemployment as a sure sign of a recovering economy is beyond my understanding.

You can add more than 50k federal jobs to the 66k temp jobs (that were, for some reason, counted separately) for more 1/3 the total.  Just sayin'.

TGIF.  now all I have to do today is explain to a client prospect why, in negotiating my fee, telling me "we're a small business" is not an effective tactic when they have twice the staff that I do. They sell a product online and they get paid up front and they don't haggle. Why should I be any different? Yesterday I actually had someone ask me to be the publicist for a friend and suggest that I get paid in dancewear.

If anybody knows of opportunities for a telecommuter to write online or offline newsletters, please post to the yahoo thread with the subject line newsletters.

27 Quick reminder (simplified) on Unemployment Math: The % is basically 1 - (J / W) = U, where J = folks with jobs, W = the number of folks in the work force, and U = The unemployment rate. O and W are both variable...if folks enter the workforce (W goes up) without jobs for them (J stays steady), the number gets worse without a single job being lost.

I don't even bother to read the employment news anymore, since it's all BS. Unemployed or underemployed freelancers like me are the illegal aliens of the employment numbers.  We can't apply for it and get no benefits and I know plenty of people in my situation.

30

A rise in unemployment isn't (by itself) bad news. (And no, I haven't gone troll on you.) Someone else with more economics background will probably come by to put you some more knowledge, but this is what I remember from college -

Unemployment is a measure of those looking for work. So if jobs are created, the population eligible to work stays the same, and unemployment goes up: that means more people are at least hopeful that they'll finally get employed.

BAD news is when the economy sheds jobs and the unemployment rate stays the same or goes down. That's when I start haunting the aisle for dried fruits, peanuts, and nonperishable foods generally.

32 You have to add jobs (IIRC 200K) just to tread water - as the population grows in the working age demographics you need to expand the labor force. A growing working age demographics can come from people not retiring (or dying), youngsters getting jobs, foreigners getting in, or people who previously didn't work - looking (ie: housewives and students).

I don't mind people making this criticism, since it does make him look bad. But in my mind, since nothing he's likely to do will make things better, I'd prefer to have him stay out of the way as much as possible. I'd love it if he took a 3 yr vacation before retiring. 46 Comrades, Chairman MaObama cares very deeply for the American worker and the rising unemployment number has greatly upset him. In fact, he's so disturbed by this number that he may only play one round of golf today to show his empathy for the proletariat.

Posted by: TheQuietMan at May 07, 2010 06:22 AM (1Jaio)

47 Ed Anger - exactly why the U3/U6 numbers are BS, plus they don't count under employed or reduced hours. Payroll receipts - it is the statistic that if reported incorrectly you go to jail (tends to increase the accuracy). When you cant get the actuals; the payroll companies (ADP, etc.) sell a predicted number that is pretty good.

57 I've just heard that the new Supreme Court pick may be Kagan. If so, this would be yet another Harvard person telling the rest of us how we have to, in various ways, have rules that effect proportional outcomes based upon the demographic bases of the communities we live in--all the while speaking on high from a court that in no way, education-institutionally wise, does the same.

Perhaps I am wrong. Probably am. So maybe it is time to finally accede to the viewpoint of Harvard grads that they are to the manor born, and just go ahead and create a "Supreme Supreme Court", to be made of only "Hahrvard Yard" Graduates, that will have both appellate and plenipotentiary powers over all three branches of government. The regular Supreme Court can then be used as the "losers bracket", so that the rest of us who don't go to Harvard don't feel we are totally useless.

I am not sure of the exact details of how this new Harvard-only Court should be best constructed--powers, etc--but am fairly sure there should be some feudal arrangement or other some such that will serve as a good jumping off point to depart from. Perhaps the old "divine right of Kings" philosophy...
