Anyone get the feeling we've entered an era of shamelessness? And I don't mean "shameless because there's nothing to be ashamed of"; i.e., pure. I mean "shameless because people don't see any reason to be ashamed"; i.e., complete without moral compass.
For example, I offer the previous post about people not paying their mortgages, and Lady Gaga's "Telephone" video. (And that's not prudery; there's a difference between overt sexuality and "OH GOD, KILL IT WITH FIRE".)

I think it has something to do with the fact that we feel no embarrassment about anything. We'll do anything, anything at all, to be noticed. Privacy is for old people.

It's the logical consequence of forty years of liberals stamping the concepts of shame and stigmatization out of our society. And oh yes, it's going to get a whole lot worse; people are about to get some powerful object lessons about why social stigma is a good thing.

I think it's more the cult of victimhood that's taken root since the 1960's. Nothing is ever anyone's fault. It's always something out of your own control. Whether you're an alcoholic, a drug addict, too fat, too thin, too broke, whatever -- it's the Man keeping you down, baby!
I'm looking less at the "save me from my own decisions" crowd, and more at the "I'ma do what I want" crowd. The folks in the mortgage article aren't just defaulting, they're defaulting and spending the "extra" money on luxuries. Instead of paying the mortgage, buying cheap groceries and eating at home, they're not paying the mortgage and eating out -- and they don't seem to see a problem with that. If I quit paying my student loans, I could use that money to afford a real apartment instead of renting from a family friend. But I keep paying, because I promised to pay and I believe in keeping my word. I would never in a million years just quit paying. I would have to be driven to extremes first.
Apparently, keeping one's word is as outdated as sexual modesty. (Again, not being prudish; just noticing the difference).

In manufacturing, we have a phenomena we call tolerance stack up. Each part in an assembly has necessary tolerances. Tolerances are necessary due to the fact that you cannot manufacture a part with no deviation from a specified dimension, due to machine capability, measuring capability, tool wear, etc. When you assemble a device made up of many different pieces, each piece has tolerances. Careful design takes these tolerances into account, in that if you were to get all your parts on the outer edge of each individual tolerance, will the final assembly still be a useful functional device, or will the errors add up to the point that the assembly will be a non functioning piece of junk.
My point is, Zeros mistakes are stacking up to the point that his government is rapidly becoming a dysfunctional mess.

Now, that's what I'm talkin' about.
Seriously,
has anyone else noticed the dumbing down of motorsports?.. In fact, it's so dumbed down, they have little girls driving race cars.
For example,
The one lap course record for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is 239.6 MPH, set by Arie Luyendyk in 1996, in a Chevy (ahem) Lola.
Whereas, the qualifying speeds this year are only 225, running underpowered hondas - HONDAS ??!!??, for crying out loud.
Corporate sponsorship and Television have turned motor-sports into nothing more than a parade of advertising.
You might as well be watching The Price is Right.

Next go to tiny.url.com Paste the URL into the box and click on the tiny.url button. It will automatically copy the tiny url to your clipboard.
Make a comment here at AceÂ’s. Type the words that you want to have linked.
Highlight the words that you want hyper-linked.
Click on the chain link looking icon in the toolbar above the comment box. It will be next to the paint bucket.
A new window appears. You will see a line that says Source. Ignore the first drop down box and paste the url in the second Source box to the right of the drop down box. Click on the insert button. It will automatically change the link a little bit, now click on the ok button.

Tolerance stacks are easy to predict, statistically and economically. Typically if it's a machined part, maximum material conditions are predominant, whereas if a part is cast or molded, minimum material conditions are the norm.
Less material used/removed = cheaper parts.

71 ...Yeah, aside from the legality of going full Chavez, what does Obama think government, which doesn't know shit about drilling and deep-sea operations, can do better than the professionals? Bizarre story, if true.
You could just as easily ask, "What did Chavez think his govt could do better than the professionals." The paradigm is straightforward: First, you gin up the rules so that an industry has major problems, then you blame capitalism for the mess, then you nationalize that industry - incrementally, if necessary. It's about power, not about who can do the best job.
I may not understand the legalities, but aren't BP's assets in international waters anyway? Or is that the deal where the rest of the world recognizes three miles out, and we claim 300? What are they going to do? Seize some gas stations? And aren't there laws against the govt just seizing stuff?
It will be interesting to see where this rumor is really coming from. If it's really from the White House having pulled a Maxine Waters, that's some seriously sad Banana Republic stuff - but it's not all that shocking, from this crowd.

That depends on the tolerances you have to live with. My tolerances are generally +/- .0003 inches (or less) in press fits, and on long bores in steel tube I hold +/-.002" on a 12" bore (3" diameter) in 4130/4140 without honing. I don't know of another shop in my state that can hold my tolerances in day to day machining.

Check out Horowitz's Front Page Magazine. I think it'll die down pretty fast. They know damned well it wasn't a humanitarian mission. It was for the purpose of running the blockade. There's no humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Humanitarian aid gets there anyway, as long as it's properly checked. And Egypt agrees with Israel on this one. (Egypt shares a border.) I noted a new book at the library this morning (at least new to me). "The American Civil War: An English View". The writings of Field Marshal Viscount Wolesly in which he describes a visit with the Confederacy and other writings.
In keeping with my continuing education on all things dealing with that unfortunate war I checked out this book.
The first sentence in Wolesly's actual writing is the following:
Knowing how little reliance can be placed at any time upon the information published in American newspapers, I was very anxious, if possible, to get to the South and judge for myself as to the condition of its people, the strength of its government, and the organization of its armies.
This was in 1862 by an outside agency looking in at America. Gee, how things have remained the same.
I can see that this is going to be an interesting book.

Cylindrical Grinders easily hold +/- .0003.
Sure, as long as you have a part suited to them. I machine those tolerances on live tool lathes, then cut steps, keyways, drill and tap holes, and retaining ring grooves without taking the part out of the lathe chuck. We even machine a dovetailed O-ring groove on the 45 degree face of a piston. Try that one

I'd like to try to fine-tune that a bit, if I may: Certainly based on the bleating of the MSM, Hollywood, "stars" and entertainers, that's a dead-on conclusion. But just as during the Vietnam era, honor and integrity are very much alive and practiced by *some* Americans. Probably around 48% or so.
Most members of the U.S. military--current and former--are stong supporters of these concepts, for obvious reasons. Indeed, the very act of volunteering for military service at a time when there's no draft is an act of honor and integrity.

there are a lot of people who aren't going to think this is too kewl.....I mean he talks about religion but it seems he pushes his religion mormonism, which a lot of Americans don't agree with....but that doesn't mean he should make fun of other faiths....

most moving Memorial Day service i've attended -- yesterday in Galveston. what an honor to listen to the short but impressive speeches by Marine 1st Sargeant, Air Force Major, Coast Guard Lieutenant, Merchant Marine Captain, Army doctor, Navy Commander, WWII PT boat vet; 2 submarine vets tolled the Lost Boats.
the merchant marine's ship supported (among other missions, of course) our invasions in the Marianas & Solomons, including at Saipan & Iwo Jima. the PT boat vet took part in the Normandy invasion.
i live right down the road from Ellington Air Force base and have visited there on occasion -- it was news to me to hear from the AF Major that they run unmanned drone missions out of that base -- all the time
after the ceremonies, incredible honor for me to shake the hands of these speakers and say a brief "thank you", however, their aim was clear -- their extreme focus was honoring their fallen comrades-in-arms

Don't forget that BP "merged" with Amoco a few years back. They may in fact still have some US assets still. My brother in law worked for Amoco at the time. The running joke there was how to pronounce the merged company name, BP-Amoco. the punchline was "BP" the Amoco is silent. BP cleared that confusion up in short order.
SO, Obama is the one BP has been waiting for? Does BP have enough of a union work force to make the company a decent gift to their workers?
I don't think he will do it, though. He shuns responsibility like Bill shuns Hillary.

I guess. I always find it amusing that when my lefty, metalhead brother starts ranting about the "Republican religious nuts" trying to ban metal, I have to remind him that Tipper started the PMRC.

That's about where I am. We got to the mudslinging early this cycle and I'm disgusted with all the candidates.
I told a telephone pollster that the candidate that came closest to promising to burn the AEA to the ground while crucifying Paul Hubbert on Goat Hill would get my vote. I rejoiced when that guy was dying years ago.
Curse you modern medical science and multiple organ transplants.

Monty says: "I agree. I think the whole concept of honor and integrity are pretty debased in modern culture, actually. I could go into a long rant on how this was caused by the twin evils of post-modernism and multi-culturalist relativism, but that particular dead horse has been thoroughly beaten. The upshot is: if everything is relative, then a man's word of honor is relative too.
I was born in the wrong age."
Watch The Prisoner of Zenda. The hero, heroine, and other good guys are motivated by duty and honor, and the baddies by opportunism and greed. I don't think anyone would make a movie now that has the hero and heroine renounce their love because they'd rather be honorable and pursue their duties.

Finally, a scare/suspicious quote from the MSM that I can support (from the politico story on the Gore split):
she often accompanied him on speaking and book-signing engagements as he continued his quest for action on "the climate crisis."

Not to spoil anything, but go see "Prince of Persia" when it comes out over there. I was very pleasantly surprised to see love, duty, and family loyalty portrayed well, as well as a nod to the duty of a good citizen to evade taxes and bureaucracy as much as possible. ;-)
