Unexpected and unprecedented.
June 10 (Bloomberg) -- More Americans than anticipated filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, a sign firings remain elevated even as the economy is expanding.
“The labor market is not as healthy as it should be at this stage of the recovery,” said John Herrmann, senior fixed- income strategist at State Street Global Markets LLC in Boston, who forecast claims at 453,000. “Hiring isn’t ramping up and this means there are downside risks to growth, income and consumption.”
What recovery? Because if this is a recovery I'd hate to see what a recession looks like

Yesterday I wrote a comment about how the MFM would immediately begin attacks on Sharon Angle and how she was “too far right” out of the “mainstream”, and how Republicans could have chosen a “better candidate” etc.
Well it wasnÂ’t long before the concern trolls were hitting AOS and it sure wasnÂ’t long before the AP lit into her.
Archy Cary has an excellent read of the AP article over at Big Journalism. Morons expect to see a lot more hit pieces like this as well as a huge influx of concern trolls and Eeyores at AOS. One thing that the author does not mention when he talks about the AP attack on the “flat tax” being “far right” is that the flat tax has been around since the days of Moses and in modern American politics was first recommended by Steve Forbs. It is hardly the brainchild of Paulbot nutjobs.
“Unexpectedly” our tax dollar supported News Agency, NPR attacks from almost the same angle even though it was written by a different author and does not reference the AP story:
You donÂ’t suppose the stories were coordinated from the DNC do you?
As I said yesterday, the proper reply to the concern trolls and Eeyores is “Only McCain can beat Hillary”.

More on the South Carolina Democrat who is being called to resign from the race
Yesterday I said I didn’t understand how he had been charged with a felony since all I could find were misdemeanors unless the coed involved was under 18. Well it turns out she was exactly 18 but it was still a felony. Also, there is more to the story as well. It turns out he sneaked by security to get into the dorms and found this young lady at a computer terminal, showed her the pictures involving graphic sex, and then told her “lets go to your room right now”. (she fled)
He is charged with violation of this code:
SECTION 16-15-305. Disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity unlawful; definitions; penalties; obscene material designated contraband.
The penalty portion reads as follows:
(H) A person who violates this section is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be imprisoned not more than five years or fined not more than ten thousand dollars, or both.
From the story in the Charleston Post and Courier it appears that this is an open and shut case.

Peak oil guy has a boner about wind farms, though, and appears to have lost his objectivity. He also claims the easy oil is gone, which is what's making us go into deeper and deeper waters. He's just wrong about that: regulations are pushing us into deeper and less hospitable sites, not an inability to produce elsewhere. Currently, only four states (TX, LA, MS & AL) allow offshore drilling. There's plenty there; we just can't go after it.

Maybe I'm just in a fog this morning, but I still don't get the law that you cited. Wouldn't the code apply to porno mags and internet sites or does it just apply when it's sprung on somebody unexpectedly?

You have to go to the actual code page. There are lots 'O lines of definitions and stuff that I didn't include there for the sake of brevity. Suffice to say that it is written so that it will apply to anyone showing porno, especially unsolicited.
While the code does apply to internet sites and magazines as well with the current round of court rulings on "prior censorship" they have reached the point where they just don't enforce those even after the fact which is still OK to enforce by the court.
The problem with prosecuting vendors who market to willing adults is that juries will no longer convict so it is a waste of money to prosecute. In this particular case most juries would be knotting the rope as the case was called.

A delegation of gay residents of Tel Aviv has been banned from joining a gay pride march in Madrid because authorities in the Israeli city have not condemned the recent attack on the Gaza flotilla.

Something is wrong with that article. I think it's trying to divert some blame from Obama.
From the article:
Federal law has also hampered the assistance. The Jones Act, the maritime law that requires all goods be carried in U.S. waters by U.S.-flagged ships, has prevented Dutch ships with spill-fighting equipment from entering U.S. coastal areas.
From Wiki, the Jones Act:
. . . requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried in U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.
So it appears that the Jones Act could not have "prevented Dutch ships with spill-fighting equipment from entering U.S. coastal areas."
A newspaper lying to make Obama look better. Who woulda thunk?

Time once again to Hail the Glorious Political Bounce from the Passage of Healthcare Reform! Right now, it appears my wonderful home state may have actually pulled its collective head out of its collective ass. Rasmussen has 2 new polls out showing in the Illinois race for US Senate, Kirk is beating Broadway Bank Alexi by 3 while the true conservatice, Brady, is beating Pat "We need a tax increase in the middle of recession" Quinn by 11!. If you are a Democrat, in Illinois, and you are losing to a Republican by 11 that means one thing ---- you suck donkey.
Rasmussen also has all the Republicans beating Bennett in the Colorado Senate Race by numbers outside the margain of error. And, even PPP, a Democratic polling outfit, is starting to admit what F. Chuck Todd can't bring himself to do: that the so-called endangered Republican Senator, Burr of North Carolina, is pretty safe, with leads now of 7 and 11 points, respectively, over his 2 potential Dem. challengers.
But, as we were told once Health Care passed, there would be a bounce in favor of Democrats, so all Hailt he Glorious Political Bounce from the Passage of Healthcare Reform!

From the quoted link:
Juan Carlos Cruz, an illegal immigrant who has worked in plant nurseries for 20 years, huddled with dozens of relatives over the Memorial Day Weekend in the backyard of his brother's Phoenix-area home (wonder how many of the dozens are also illegal) to plot out the family's next move to avoid what they say will be harassment by police. Virginia and California are the front-runners. (how about Mexico?)
"If I were alone, I'd try to stay. But I have a family, and I have to find a place where we can live with more freedom," said Cruz, who hopes to move July 4 to blend in with holiday weekend traffic. "This is getting too hard." (good, that's the whole idea)
How do people justify statements like this? I have members of my own family try to back up statements like this. When confronted and with a request to defend the statement, the family member will stand with mouth open, trying desperately to come up with a cogent response. This effort fails, 99% of the time. The other 1% is usually dispatched with a second inquiry for information.
Common sense is lost on so many good people, who put way too much faith in what they are spoon fed to read, rather than actually thinking about what they are reading.

Sources: Scandals at Arlington Cemetery prompt firings
WASHINGTON - A number of scandals at Arlington National Cemetery, including one in which a service member's body was buried on top of another, are costing the top two administrators their jobs, Pentagon officials said Thursday.
Army Secretary John McHugh is set to announce Thursday that he will replace Arlington National's superintendent, John Metzler, and his deputy, Thurman Higgenbotham, after accusations of poor management and an investigation that Higgenbotham had illegally hacked into the computer files of a former Arlington employee.

Peter Singer, writing in the New York Times, asks whether a world without people wouldn’t be a better place. His argument is simple. If nobody is alive then nobody’s human rights can be violated. “Have you ever thought about whether to have a child? … very few ask whether coming into existence is a good thing for the child itself.”

The ultimate act of altruism, he argues, may be a conscious choice to be the last generation on earth. In that way there would be no one left to suffer the depradations of capitalism such as climate change.

As for the Republicans putting him up to running that could be. Hell, he may even "confess" to that, but I would want to see some proof. But he had to get that $10,000 from somewhere.
And a "debate" with DeMint. "Conventional Wisdom" says that it is insane to debate an opponent who is down and out on the ropes with no possibility of winning. However, this my be something outside the bounds of "conventional wisdom". Hell, so far this entire election year has been that way.
This may be a good chance to show off the "face" of the Democrat Party. Its a chance to hurt DeMint but it is a bigger chance to make the Democrat Party look like they really are; really really bad.

The war in Afghanistan is now the longest war in US history - and really has no end in sight.
Shouldn't this war be considered a failure by now?
I was all for going in and kicking Al Qaeda's butt after 9/11 but what the hell is the US accomplishing there today? I hate to say it but it is sounding more and more like the poorly run Viet Nam war. Winning the hearts and minds of the people, strange rules of engagement, not being able to attack the supporters/suppliers (Pakistan, Iran, etc.), poor leadership, no coherent strategy, etc.
But nobody hardly even mentions the war any more - MSM, hawks, doves, Dems, Reps, Libertarians, bloggers, etc. (And when's the last time Obama spoke or answered a question about the war?)
Huffington Post is about the only place I see ANYTHING reported.
I guess the saying is true - Afghanistan is where empires go to die.

Cut'n Run, as always with the dems.
So far the training of the Afghan troops so that they can take care of themselves has been a failure. Afghanistan is a fiefdom of warlords and will won't become a working federated republicanytime soon.
If the Afghans can't figure out how to take care of themselves there seems to be only two choices - 1) the US spends $1T/year occupying the country with our military indefinitely, or 2) cut'n run
Both options seem to be losers. Which one is worse?
My thought after the US kicked butt in Afghanistan after 9/11 was to give the country to the Northern Alliance and leave with a warning - if you mess with the US again (allow full access for Al Qaeda, etc.) we'll come back and kick your asses again and give the country to someone else. Having the US troops stay there indefinitely doesn't make any sense to me.

BELLE CHASSE, La. -- The trickle-down effect of the oil spill can now be felt inside animal shelters along coastal parishes. Unemployed fisherman are struggling to support both their families and their pets, leaving many with no choice but to try and give away their animals.
Inside the back room of the Plaquemines Parish Animal Welfare Society (P.A.W.S.) shelter, you can hear a whimpering from Dexter. The puppy is one of more than 40 dogs caged inside the facility. While none have a drop of oil on them, they are still very much suffering because of it.
Their rescue shelter is packed, every cage filled. And the waiting list for people trying to drop off their pets here is now 20 percent longer than normal

the US spends $1T/year occupying the country with our military indefinitely
Sorry - typo - didn't mean to use /year
From the Congressional Research Service from last fall:
If the AdministrationÂ’s request for $139 billion in war costs is enacted, cumulative appropriations for the Afghan and Iraq wars would reach $1.08 trillion dollars. As the number of troops in Afghanistan rises and those in Iraq falls, reflecting President ObamaÂ’s decisions in March 2009, the share of overall costs begins to shift to Afghanistan. The $1.08 trillion total includes:
• $706 billion for Iraq (69%);
• $300 billion for Afghanistan (28%);
• $29 billion for enhanced security (3%); and
• $5 billion unallocated DOD costs (1%).
Why jump to conclusions and attack me as a liberal (which I'm not - I'm libertarian, registered Rep, voted for Bush twice, proudly worked for a defense contractor for many, many years, and am a hawk)?
Posted by: markytom at June 10, 2010 08:27 AM (ZG9as)
Okay, markytom, here's why. I'll accept your protestations at face value. But the only other people who bring up the cost of the WoT are liberals, as a device only to launch another partisan attack. They don't really care that we're spending so much money, because they don't mind when vast sums are spent on government boondoggles, plus when you point out to them that the amount of debt that Obama has created - $4.2 trillion - is equivalent to SIX IRAQ WARS, all they do is make excuses for him.

Thanks. I bring up the costs of the Afghan war for cost-benefit analysis. If there is little benefit then the costs aren't justified. I just don't see how the war in Afghanistan is in the US's national interest. If Iran is the problem then let's take care of Iran and not use Afghanistan as a proxy war.
As far as liberals go - what happened to all the anti-war protesters? I have to give some respect to loony Cindy Sheehan as she continues to protest the war. Where did everyone else go once Obama was elected? Obviously it was for a political agenda - not true convictions. Same for the MSM - where are the anti-war rants by the lefty media? It can't get much more hypocritical than that. I haven't heard "war for oil" in a long time.

Read the comments at Yahoo or newspaper websites. I have to check the calendar to make sure it's not 2003, because in 2010 it's pretty damn obvious we're not getting any more oil from Iraq than we were in the 1980s.

I quit watching Chris "commie" Wallace a long time ago.

I read some article somewhere saying "our boys are dying to protect poppy fields" or something on that order. Have to try and find it now.
