There's 44 Dunkins within a 10 mile radius of Trenton.  Christie's aides are going to be drinking a lot of coffee today.

18 Re sidebar story on Pacific islands growing larger.

That is an interesting story but I would prefer that the Morons be consistent with the claim of sea level rising that the AGW scammers have never presented any evidence at all that the sea levels have risen.

The actual evidence that I have seen is that in some locations the level has gone up very slightly over a long time and in some locations it has gone down very slightly.

The thing is, the change in level in ALL cases has been less than the measurement uncertainties.

As for what NASA says, I wouldn't trust anything they put out right now.  They have been discredited by the politicization of their science.

24 I posted this on the Haley thread from last night but it appears dead. It is worth repeating because the Morons need to be warned that all the politicians who want to win conservative votes are going to do this.

This morning when I called up the weather I noted an ad by McMaster that said the "Tea Party" had endorsed him for Gov.  I had previously seen that the Tea Party Express out of Myrtle Beach had endorsed Haley. Going to the "Tea Party Patriots of SC" web site I can't see where they have endorsed anyone.

I will say this. McMaster is a protege of Graham/McCain who are two of the biggest RINOs in the Senate. I can hardly see him as a small government conservative who will fight the big spenders in the legislature.

What I see happening here is a lot of people are going to claim endorsement by the Tea party. Especially in States where there is no single "organized Tea Party".

When a candidate claims endorsement or someone comes on claiming to be a Tea Party rep do some checking. Especially when the person claiming the endorsement doesn't have a small gov conservative reputation.

Student immigrants use civil rights-era strategies

BOSTON (AP) - They gather on statehouse steps with signs and bullhorns, risking arrest. They attend workshops on civil disobedience and personal storytelling, and they hold sit-ins and walk out of class in protest. They're being warned that they could even lose their lives.

Students fighting laws that target illegal immigrants are taking a page from the civil rights era, adopting tactics and gathering praise and momentum from the demonstrators who marched in the streets and sat at segregated lunch counters as they sought to turn the public tide against racial segregation.

See the meme?  Curtailing illegal immigration = Racial segregation and denial of civil rights.

why don't the teachers just stop paying their union dues for a year?

Because most of them are on a sweet gravy train, they know it and they refuse to give it up. What's going on in NJ now sheds light on a couple interactions I've had over the years. A long time ago, I was working in a dept. store. One of my co-workers came up to me and began describing at length all the benefits she got working as a teacher's aide in the Philadelphia school system. I was young and extremely bored by her rambling, and I never got it - til now. (FWIW, a Philly pretzel's brain scan showed more  activity than that girl's did.)

Later, a friend of mine suddenly announced she was going for her teacher's certificate. This perplexed me, as she was in an entirely different line of work. She was however, married to a teacher in one of PA's highest paid school districts. More bennies to go around the house, I guess.

WASHINGTON – Determined to project both command and compassion, President Barack Obama is returning to the Louisiana coast for a fresh reality check on work to stanch the oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico and the spiraling effects of the nation's worst environmental disaster. The president underscored the mounting political implications by abruptly canceling plans for a trip to Indonesia and Australia later this month.

Addressing a crisis that threatens to undermine his presidency, Obama spoke for many Thursday in declaring himself furious at a situation that "is imperiling an entire way of life and an entire region for potentially years." Friday's trip will be his second to the Gulf in eight days, answering critics in both parties who suggest he has seemed detached from the crisis.

Polls show the public growing more negative toward the president's handling of the spill.

In other words it's all for show and politics. And didn't Barry declare victory last week?

Heather,

What's happening in NJ is the head of a pimple that's ripe to be popped, to use a really gross metaphor. For years, there's been a vicious cycle of school districts (for whatever reason) gaining a good reputation, which attracted homebuyers, who then rationalized to themselves the ever increasing property taxes. The school teachers were the stars of this show. (and the administrators the ones behind the scenes who truly benefited from the cash bonanza). I heard it so much when I lived in the Garnet Valley School District, which morphed from a semi-rural oasis of horse farms and cornfields to the suburban boom locale of Delaware County. The soccer mommies were so proud to proclaim that they lived in the GVSD, (this while sporting the latest high dollar handbag, often mismatched with Reebok sneakers and the like.)

I  imagine a similar dynamic occurred in NJ, with the ostentatious parents unwilling partners to the teachers' subliminal extortion tactics. In NJ the situation reached critical mass, we're not there quite yet in PA.

Posted by: kallisto at June 04, 2010 05:57 AM (+FkcS)

57 So I feel really groggy today. I woke up to find that we have a fiat currency with no value and a 13 trillion dollar debt, a government that manipulates every conceivable economic number, and a President reared in Indonesia... is any of this shit true? Can I go back to bed now?

RE:  Appliances

If it's A&E Factory Service contracted to do the repair, don't give them more than one opportunity to fix it.

My brand-new washer went out last year, and it took six weeks to get it resolved.  Two different boards needed replacement.  A&E sent a total of three of one of the boards.  When they finally sent one of the other boards, the service tech no-showed.  I installed the board and canceled the service order.

It was a nasty six-week ordeal of dealing with these shitheads and their broken policy of overbooking their techs and refusing to schedule follow-up visits requiring parts without a seven-business-day delivery window.  We did laundry at friends' and families' houses during this period.  Whenever I called A&E, they were politely unhelpful.

As soon as I canceled the service order, they called me up to four times a day to schedule a pick-up for the parts that weren't used in the repair.

Their script made them ask whether they could record the call.  I refused, and they would hang up.  When they escalated to somebody who could talk to me without recording the conversation, I asked if I could record the call.  She refused, and I disconnected.

The final conversation I had with them got really nasty and it ended with my repeatedly yelling, "I DON'T RECALL SIGNING FOR ANY PARTS!"

I haven't heard from them since.

The moral of the story for me is that I will self-insure new appliances.  If a factory warranty is involved, I will give the manufacturer's service company a reasonable number of tries to make it right and document every one of their fuckups.  If they cannot get it right, I will get a local repair shop involved and either pay out-of-pocket or buy a replacement, and then pursue reimbursement in the courts.

70 Teleprompter Jeebus expects to add about 100,000 private sector jobs in the form of transmission specialists and repair people.

What I have heard is that it is useless to try to "repair" one. All they do is replace it with a rebuilt and send your old one to a center somewhere where it is in turn rebuilt.

In the end it costs as much as a damn engine rebuild/replacement.  And if it is a foreign car just forget about it.

Regarding new appliances, be sure to ask for the model with the absolute LEAST electronics.  Those are the worst parts.  Get analog controls if you can.  Especially for refrigerators.  The digital crap can't take the poorly conditioned power that we have in many areas.  Also, since they have gone to lead-free solder for the solder joints, the rate of failure will dramatically increase over time.

87 Regarding new appliances, be sure to ask for the model with the absolute LEAST electronics.  Those are the worst parts.

You are absolutely right.  I took a chance on a new washer because the frame was rusting on my old one.  I noticed it when I cracked it open to replace the damper pads for the third time.

It gave me a pretty good run of fifteen years.  In retrospect, I should have treated the rust and kept it.

88 The problem with buying a house in Detroit is that I have to live there. However, they may bulldoze the neighboring dwellings leaving me with some sort of enlarged estate. Have been looking at Gulf Coast property. Always wanted to wake up, take a deep breath of noxious fumes, and gaze out at an ever widening and shimmering oil slick with dead penguins. Sweet.

If signed by Governor Paterson, the law would require employers to give domestic workers paid vacation and sick days, as well as 14-days notice before termination.

Well, at least I'll be busy.

92 Posted by: MikeO at June 04, It is E&A, and the tech just left. As has happened before, the dishwasher started right up for him. So, since he couldn't identify which of the rinky-dink components was toast, he couldn't do anything but tell us to call again when the thing fully dies. The thing is, we can't load the dishwasher without risking having to empty the damn (still dirty) dishes when it chooses that moment to fail. So it's as useless to us as if it already IS toast. I'm going to the Maytag website right now. I guess I'll have to call someone over there. I want a new dishwasher, different model. Don't know how long it's gonna take, but I intend to get it. I've given them a full year to live up to their warranty (we actually still have two years left on the A&E contract) and this P.O.S. still doesn't work. Now it's just a matter of how snarky I am in my e-mail correspondence with whatever unlucky customer service rep. answers my query.

I have kept asking for the Gulf Coast Morons to clue us in on whether or not there really is a big slick. Any time they show a poor oil covered bird in the water or a slick on Fox they zoom in for a real close closeup without showing a wide angle of just how big the slick is.

I haven't seen any replies yet. What I am wondering on this "worst disaster in history" crap is if it is just another Katrina hype.

That's the real problem. Too many drooling libtards in Israel. They don't want the world to hate them, but the fucking world will hate them regardless. They should behave like the Russians. Do what they need to do and fuck the rest of the world. Nobody speaks ill of them (the Russkies), nobody fucks with them, because they don't fuck around, they fuck you up.

At 431k, less 411k census, and 31k from temporary help services, it sure doesn't look good even without the 215k birth-death adjustment which only conspiracy theorists look at according to Mr. Liesman. 431k minus 411k minus 31k minus 215k = -226k. Nuf said. In other news, those unemployed longer than 27 weeks hits a new record at 46%. Nothing conspiratorial about that number.

Also unemployment dropped as 300K left workforce.

I guess all of this robust activity was unexpected. I feel better knowing that all of these self employed people are filing their quarterly withholding.
