She better be fired. I still can't believe this isn't on the news. This woman is a vile person.  How something like this is overlooked is beyond me.

Right. But let's call bullshit on her apologizing for anything. She regrets that she got in trouble for saying something on the record that she has undoubtedly said millions of times in private over the years. She couldn't even bring herself to say, "I'm sorry," even though she knows exactly what sending Jews who escaped the Holocaust "back to Poland and Germany" means. She will remain part of the White House Press Corpse, too; President Obama knew who she was as well as any of us when he brought the old Nazi whore some cupcakes on her birthday.

Pardon me but who the fuck cares. We all know what Helen Thomas is and what she stands for, and we always have.

i think the point he is making is that an apology is a public statement claiming the previous statement was wrong.

What she said is one of those, "i'm sorry people were offended by what i honestly believe."

She honestly believes what she said, so much so that she isn't even offering an real apology.

Citizen Kane was loosely based on Hearst.  "Rosebud" was his nickname for, um, a certain part of his girlfriend.  Hearst tried his best to ruin Welles, but was unsuccessful.  Of course Welles was on his own self-destruction, "started at the top and worked my way down."

You have to love how effectively he got under the skin of one of the most powerful men in media.

I love it when you see people get a true glimpse of the person they recognize/admire, and they find that person wanting. I truly hope there is more damning video, that can't be ignored. I'm old enough to have earned the right to be candid" and so that is what she did.  Her comments are more scary in the context of "if that is what she is thinking what is the rest of the press corps thinking" and "if that is what she is thinking what is DC thinking?"  She obviously felt no compunction about saying this and didn't expect any kind of reprisals so maybe that is how they all think?

83 Any northern va 8th district primary voters: get out tomorrow and vote for Matthew Berry.

That goes for Morons all over in every voting district.  Lets try to get some real conservative candidates in the race. Remember that in a primary it is NEVER a question of "the lesser of the evils".

On the same topic I found some interesting info yesterday while checking to insure my poll location was the same for the primaries.

I have been castigating the Republican Party for "open primaries" since the 2008 election. It seems that perhaps they may not be the guilty party on that score.

On the 2010 Republican Primary ballot there will be two questions on that regard for opinions on overturning STATE LAW on primaries.

1. Are you in favor of allowing the Party to call for closed primaries (repeal of State law).

2. Are you in favor of removing the requirement that any Party which nominates its candidate by convention do so with a 75% majority.  (this makes it almost impossible to do a convention)

Rabbi David F. Nesenoff, the man behind the Helen Thomas video, was just on Fox News, and he says Part II will be released "in a day or two."

his biggest mistake was releasing it on a thursday or friday. Eveyone knows bombshell stuff is to be released on monday. She said this crap at a Jewish Heritage event at the White House.

Switch to gatorade.

I used to do heavy outdoor labor for years and dreaded those summertime headaches. After I switched from water to gatorade they stopped.

The headaches are caused by loss of electrolytes, particularly potassium. So also up your intake of foods high in potassium -- dried apricots, bananas and potato skins are a few. For me, gatorade works best.

A few days I believe. I havent been keeping track of individual spots, I just note that there is usually one to three spots over the last few months. Still down greatly from normal. Certainly not any indication of the Sun waking up. Their models are toys, not useful for prediction at all, yet they cling to them rather than tell people they don't really know shit. Their egos couldn't stand the strain of the public knowing their guess is as good as NASA's.

153 HOWELL TOWNSHIP — A New Jersey state trooper described as "the embodiment of the finest ideals" of the force, died today after being struck by a car in Monmouth County as he searched for the occupants of an abandoned car.

Marc K. Castellano, 29, who has been with the force since 2004, was struck at 10 a.m. in a westbound lane of Interstate 195, near Exit 31 in Howell. The married father of two was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he died several hours later.

State Police Capt. Gerald Lewis said the driver of the abandoned car, Diana Hoffman, 30, of Blackwood, Camden County, was found hiding in a nearby wooded area shortly after Castellano was struck and was taken into custody. Charges against her are pending.

259 Can anyone up on pedagogic theory explain to me why they want to teach my kids to do math in lateral equations versus vertical columns

All math that is Algebra and beyond is all conducted in lateral equations. Getting used to viewing mathematical equality in that sense preps them for the basics of Algebra. In a world where a four function calculator costs four bucks and is the size of  a key fob, the critical societal skills in math have less to do with the mechanical process of long division and column arithmetic, and more to do with an abstract understanding of equality, a mathematical concept that is represented in lateral equations. My question back is, since all practical mathematics beyond balancing your checkbook is some sort of basic relationship in equality, why not start teaching equality earlier so that there is less transition when students reach pre-algebra?

Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 07, 2010 08:30 AM (0q2P7)

265 But Algebra is solved laterally. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division should not be. You have to hold place in your head. It's faster to do it vertically. I just wonder what they do in japan? I think the teachers/educators here are trying to dumb down the students.

266 Mike - they aren't teaching either, it seems. Just forcing the lateral expression of basic math - just an empty space to be filled. I was thinking it was a function of the tests that they have to take?

272 Not a math teacher, but it's supposed to help the kids transition to algebra.  Notice the emphasis on "supposed".  In my honest and unprofessional opinion, I would consider it advantageous for kids to learn to work laterally and vertically right from the start, then they are comfortable with both very necessary methods.  But I'm not a math teacher.

Posted by: unknown jane at June 07, 2010 08:41 AM (5/yRG)

273 , I would consider it advantageous for kids to learn to work laterally and vertically right from the start Well, they're going to get vertical at home until I am convinced they understand the mechanics of solving a basic function. Then it on to slide rules and "The Practical Navigator" -- the school will have to catch up with the lateral/equality method after they divert into geometry for awhile (which should be a parallel not serial exercise).

Posted by: Jean at June 07, 2010 08:44 AM (mtAmx)

In fact, now that I think about it, imho it would be advantageous to have kids learning math along a three dimension concept as soon as possible, just like with reading.

276 283  I think that learning basic math with an abacus would solve the problem of learning vertical and horizontal; story problems might do the trick for three dimensional concepts, so would field excercises (like laying out a pattern on the ground or something like that).  I'm talking about young children here -- and again, not a math teacher, so I could be all wrong.

"...but for basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division - the columnar method keeps the decimal place and position in order, breaks complex problems in lots of little problems, etc. All of the books seem to be teaching and testing it laterally, just wondering it I was crazy..."

Exactly.  I undersand the algebra thing.  But the way some of these schools are approaching basic math, especially multiplication and division, but even addition and subtraction is just whacked.  When the kid does it what I guess is now the fucking old fashioned way that I teach him, he gets it right and takes far less time.  So he's not dumb.  When he does it the teacher's way, he's all over the place.

Confirmed it with the teacher too and reviewing the lessons, workbooks, and worksheets.  She confessed that they didn't spend much time on math this year because...wait for it...the standardized tests for Florida this year weren't going to be focusing on math very heavily.

God I wish I could afford private school.

278 285  Most people don't realize the idea of reading as a mathematic concept -- but if you think of letters, words, sentences as mathematical formulae, then, when you progress to reading beyond simple sentences, are reading a book with a storyline, then you are getting into the realm of time and space progression and flow.  Clear as mud?  Anyway, that's one of the ideas I've always toyed around with.

Oh geeez..   The point is this: the IDF fucked up.

They went into this not knowing what they were facing and ended up having to use way more force than was necessary.

I have no sympathy for the scum on that boat who were ready and waiting to ambush those troops. None at all... they got what they deserved.  But they also achieved martyrdom status and world sympathy from all the liberals in Europe, America and elsewhere around the world..

No one needed to die in this.. this was incompetence at its worst.  The commander that sent his troops into this mess should be demoted to private.

284 OMG.

There is something readable at LGF: Reuters cropped out a bunch of things on their photos from the Gaza "peace" ship. Like weapons. And pools of blood. Etc.

Then, after being caught, released the real photos.

I am shocked that this is on LGF.

285 292  Have you seen the standardized tests they take today?  Let's face it, the entire education system has gone rotten -- yeah, there are still some very good teachers and administrators out there who actually care about teaching, and teaching actual things of value.  But the pc bs has taken over the whole show, and has for quite a while; the rot is beginning to really show.

Chuckles just probably hasn't found a way to disown supporting Israel yet.  They haven't done something worthy of a "last straw"

The real question is are the likely anti-semitic rants in the comments being deleted and the users banned, or are they allowed to continue posting.  My money is on allowed to continue.

287 Education people insist that one cannot learn geometry until age 15 or sophomore year in hs. They will even let a freshman (good math student) take algebra II with juniors before they will let them take geometry. They insist it has to do with brain development and spacial awareness. That is also behind the driving age. You have to be 15 to get the spatial stuff right, or something like that.

I'm not fully buying this though. Why would it be harder to grasp the idea of a plane spatially than it would be to anticipate the spatial relationship of a lacrosse ball or baseball moving at 90 mph?

Especially considering the experience they get with video games these days.  Spatial relationships play very highly in some of those games.

As is so often the case, the "education people" are full of crap.  Those are the same folk who told us that "whole language" was better than phonics for teaching a person to read English.  Given that English is a phonetic languge, I'm a bit surprised so many people found that easy to swallow.

I found geometry to be laughably easy when I was a HS sophomore, and I certainly wasn't the only one.

Saw a comment somewhere that threw cold water on the idea of the lavish wedding after you've been shacked up for a while.  Was Rush really shacked  up w/ Rogers?

In other news, the most disturbing thing was an excerpt of the new book where Rush told the author that he expects to be stripped of his show and his wealth by leftists.  Rush is a defeatist?  I've always thought he has anything and everything squirreled away and was looking toward Czechoslovakia for healthcare and broadcasting in absentia (if necessary).

I took Geometry as a Freshman.  Algebra 2 as a junior.  Took Algebra in the 8th grade.  And as far as I know that's still the standard path for students there.

Before that I was never on the "Advanced" math path.  But my 7th grade teacher recognized I deserved to be.  Probably due to the fact that I was helping explain the shit to some of my other classmates without outright  telling them the answer and still having no problems doing my own work.

That doesn't even make sense.  Then you follow it with:

"But they also achieved martyrdom status and world sympathy from all the liberals in Europe, America and elsewhere around the world.."

In case you haven't noticed, anyone that dies at the hands of the Israelis achieves that status.  You seem to think that these people are scum, got what they deserve, and that the Israelis were righteous, but that the Israelis should place a higher priority on foreign liberal perception than their own security.

Real coherent philosophy.  Sounds awfully Obamish.

294 Burn the Witch - If you think perception does not matter on the world stage, then we have nothing to talk about.

And even if you discount world opinion, have you totally discounted what this had done within Israel itself?

I might suggest a little reading.. a well reasoned article by people whose job it is to analyze these things..

http://bit.ly/9BMqwA

Flotillas and the Wars of Public Opinion
A logical Israeli response would have been avoiding falling into the provocation trap and suffering the political repercussions the Turkish NGO was trying to trigger. Instead, the Israelis decided to make a show of force. The Israelis appear to have reasoned that backing down would demonstrate weakness and encourage further flotillas to Gaza, unraveling the Israeli position vis-à-vis Hamas. In this thinking, a violent interception was a superior strategy to accommodation regardless of political consequences. Thus, the Israelis accepted the bait and were provoked.

......

The Turkish flotilla aimed to replicate the Exodus story or, more precisely, to define the global image of Israel in the same way the Zionists defined the image that they wanted to project. As with the Zionist portrayal of the situation in 1947, the Gaza situation is far more complicated than as portrayed by the Palestinians. The moral question is also far more ambiguous. But as in 1947, when the Zionist portrayal was not intended to be a scholarly analysis of the situation but a political weapon designed to define perceptions, the Turkish flotilla was not designed to carry out a moral inquest.

Instead, the flotilla was designed to achieve two ends. The first is to divide Israel and Western governments by shifting public opinion against Israel. The second is to create a political crisis inside Israel between those who feel that IsraelÂ’s increasing isolation over the Gaza issue is dangerous versus those who think any weakening of resolve is dangerous.

297  I think it might be a case of "muscle memory and knowing" vs. theoretical analysis.  I'm basing this off of my experience with riding horses over jumps, both stadium and cross country -- there are numerous, real time mathematical/geometric calculations going on for the rider and these can change rapidly depending upon the changing conditions.  This is especially true when you get into the realm of riding over the really big ones (failure to make and adjust for the proper calculation can land you in a world of hurt...far beyond getting a bad grade, lol!).

The rider could be what other's would consider not the most intellectual or educated, certainly not in math and geometry, perhaps -- yet they are performing very advanced math/geometric calculations, in their head, at a rapid fire pace.  How can they do this?  Well, while they may not be whizzes at math theory, they have been taught to do those precise things in the process of learning how to ride -- the brain and body learned together to the point that the rider doesn't even think about it anymore (although the beginner most definitely has to learn through the brain at the start).

It would be similar to being a pilot or a yachtsman.

To a certain extent, I can see where this concept would be useful with young children in learning; no horse person bats an eye at a child much younger than 15 learning the spatial, mathematical concepts involved in riding down a line of jumps or going through a combination -- I see no reason why the same wouldn't hold for a child in the classroom.

If that is not dismissing global perception, I have no fucking idea what you are saying.  If you think it is only liberal perceptions that are affected by this.. you haven't read the fucking article.. or you have your opinions already formed and are worthless trying to persuade.

Because making the point about security being a higher priority than liberal perception is the same as saying that "perception does not matter".

Would now be a bad time to point out that you were the one who first made mention of liberal perceptions?  I mean, I don't wanna get in the way of you completely mis-stating my arguments for me or anything like that.

So you keep beating the shit out of all those strawmen champ.  And when you say you're done, shut the fuck up, otherwise, you're not done.
