1 Good Morning Morons

Just back from voting in the R primary here in SC.  As I expected turnout is light. One hour after the polls opened I was the 18 voting on the R ballot while the Dem ballot had about half that.

That is unusual since my district is a gerrymandered Dem district.

6 Yes, my only question and "hope" is that she will get enough to obviate the need for a runoff.

One other funny thing is that one of the R candidates for Gov was at my polling place blegging for votes which is illegal in SC.

I started to tell him that the State Party needed to discipline some folks and that Will Folks needed a dose of "you'll never work in this town again".

Ditto here in Iowa.  Half hour after polls opened I was the #2 voter.  Two more people came in while I was feeding the ballot into a reading device.  In defense of my precinct, most of the housing around here is on acreages so population density is quite low.  Also, the state makes it incredibly easy to vote absentee.  While delivering Branstad yard signs Sunday, several people told me they'd already voted.  In any event, vote often and vote Republican.

Oh, I was successful in convincing my better half to drive to the poll, change his registration from independent [sigh] to Republican and vote.

I don't seem to recall you commemorating the attack on Marines in Lebanon last year on October 23rd.  I'm sure you'll be doing that this year though, right?  Because after all, this isn't just some conspiracy theory that the jooooooos attacked the USS Liberty deliberately for absolutely no benefit whatsoever, right?

The American deaths were a tragedy.  All friendly fire incidents are.

25 In World II five million tons of petroleum were cast into the Atlantic (about 32 million barrels of oil) from tanker ships sunk by Nazi submarines, in a period from 1942 to 1945, and with heavy concentration in the fateful year of 1942. Averaged over 1000 days the loss is equivalent to two to five times the oil now spilled into the Gulf of Mexico – every day – for the duration of the war.

Good stuff.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at June 08, 2010 06:19 AM (mR7mk)

26  Because after all, this isn't just some conspiracy theory that the jooooooos attacked the USS Liberty deliberately for absolutely no benefit whatsoever, right?

Israel most certainly benefited from deliberately attacking the Liberty. At the time Egypt and the U.S. were close (closer than the U.S. and Israel at the time.) Israel was afraid that the Liberty would pass intelligence to the Egyptian government, so it was attacked.

You don't need grand conspiracies to understand how the world works; you just need to open your eyes and deal with what you see.

Using the deaths of American servicemen as a strawman isn't exactly tasteful either Gerry.

Just for rhetorical what ifs -- let's just say the Liberty incident was an act of aggression...how many countries who have acted aggressively towards us, have killed our people in the past, are we currently allied with?  It would seem that having former enemies as allies is a part and parcel of geopolitics.

And that's just going from the supposition that you are correct in calling the Liberty incident an act of aggression -- there is evidence to the contrary.

Be that as it may: Israel has not been a bad ally, and it is the key to stability in that region.  Thus, no matter what your personal feelings, it is illogical to try and destroy that country, nor support anyone who would.

Really Gerry -- ignorance can be met with patience, as it is a condition of not knowing better, but boneheaded stupidity is an altogether different beast -- so, to put an end to this verbose rant: go fetch your shinebox.

You are stupid. The war had already begun. I think that Egypt was aware of Israel's intentions, especially when they noticed that most of their own fighters were smoldering wrecks.

36  I'm saying you are using those same survivors that you seem to be oh so concerned about as a strawman, and in a vain attempt to drum up emotive support for your real issue (which would have nothing to do with any great love for military personnel and their safety -- in fact, I am of the opinion Gerry that you are one of those who delights in American service deaths if they are fighting the "wrong" side).

That is illogical and crass -- and it just isn't working.  Try a different tack, you've been on this one for too long and patience with it wears thin.

I just want to throw my two cents loosely related to the Liberty debate.

The U.S. relationship with Israel has not always been a strong reciprocal relationship.  The U.S. has played Israel on more than one occaision to influence outcomes that were not in Israel's best interest.  And, to be fair, Israel has spied on the U.S. so they are not altogether innocent either.

There is another side to the Liberty story that the U.S. has never told and that for diplomatic reasons, Israel hasn't openly publicized.  The U.S. was trying to influence the outcome of that conflict by passing very sensitive information to one side that would not have been in Israel's interest.

Bottom line - the accident that Israel apologized for was no accident and the U.S. was not there innocently.

44 Countries work for their own self-interest, or should.  There is no such thing as "bosom buddies" on the geopolitical scale -- emotion has nothing to do with it, or shouldn't.  Of course Israel was not entirely innocent in the Liberty case, and of course neither was the U.S.

It is however, a rather stupid and feeble attempt to drum up support by referencing that situation and applying it to now imho.

I agree with one exception; Jonathan Pollard spied for Israel and was sentenced to a very harsh prison sentence that is far beyond the sentences given to spies from other openly hostile countries.  The fact that he is still being held (for some kind of leverage?) in an injustice, imo.

My point is this: Most spies do their work for their client country and against (to the detriment of) the country they are spying on.  I am in no way condoning what Pollard did, but you cannot in any logical way make the argument that he was spying against the U.S.  That is a subtle, but major distinction, imo.
