Anybody know when Rangel is going to have his going out of business garage sale?  I hear he's got a sweet wet bar that would look great in my garage.

8 The Marine that got blown up (actually didn't get blown up) owes his life to the incompetence of the bomber. The charge was buried too deep, and only partially detonated. He was lucky. Very lucky. Like winning the lottery.

They had to pass it to find out what is in it

A little-noticed section of the Wall Street reform law grants the federal government broad new powers to compel financial firms to hire more women and minorities — an effort at promoting diversity that’s drawing fire from Republicans who say it could lead to de facto hiring quotas.

Deep inside the massive overhaul bill, Congress gives the federal government authority to terminate contracts with any financial firm that fails to ensure the “fair inclusion” of women and minorities, forcing every kind of company from a Wall Street giant to a mom-and-pop law office to account for the composition of its work force.

Employment law experts say the language goes further than any previous attempt by the U.S. government to promote diversity in the financial sector — putting muscle behind federal efforts to help minority- and women-owned firms gain access to billions in federal contracts.

27 "Mexican Officials to Patrol Staten Island Following Latest Bias Attack"when I first heard this I thought the news was wrong, I mean, how is a foreign government allowed to come into the United States and have any authority?

Chuck Todd, NBC News Political Director, quoted by Roger Simon of Politico today:

"I am sure Ezra had good intentions when he created it, but I am offended the right is using this as a sledgehammer against those of us who donÂ’t practice activist journalism.  Journolist was pretty offensive. Those of us who are mainstream journalists got mixed in with journalists with an agenda."

1.  He's offended by what the right is doing with Journolist.

2.  He's a mainstream journalist without an agenda.

Plus the Hickenlooper thing added in.  He's really not been affective imo but he's the quintessential granola and the Repubs are incapable of countering the growing granola hippie influence.

Legalized dope, sanctuary city, big Fed employee presence.

Colorado Republicans are clueless.

Hickenlooper will win on personality/default.  The GOP will lose this race, I'm almost certain.  Scott McInnis is a dead-end candidate.  Maes isn't all that bad, but he has campaign finance issues, and low name recognition.

Josh Penry should be the candidate for Governor.  Josh Penry is a fantastic, young, well-spoken fresh face.  He is the future.  Scott McInnis is a dead-end.    The Colorado GOP establishment refuses to consider the future.  The CO GOP  refuses to strategize with candidates that can be a part of a new and vibrant future.  Instead, we get the same old re-tread thinking and big ego "It's my turn" Scott McInnis.

Now that Tancredo has entered the race, it's over.  The GOP will lose for sure.  Oddly, Tancredo will set himself up to be hated.  So, I'm not sure what he's thinking.

I don't hate Tancredo, I think he's doing it for the right reasons, but his reasons are not good strategy.  Again - the GOP establishment in CO are clueless political strategists.

I did two winters in Western Kansas. Temperatures got to almost 20 below zero in winter. I learned things. Like don't wash your car if you ever want to get back into it. Don't set your parking brake if you want to use the car before spring. Yes, your tires CAN freeze solidly to the ground. Every house has at least one 4X4 in the driveway for a reason. etc.

For all GM's brave talk about the Volt being a "game changer," I have it on good authority that the company can only build a maximum of 30,000-40,000 Volts annually. Even if all are sold (no doubt gubmint motor pools will be full of the damn things), the company will lose serious money on each one.

What Osama Obama and all the green weenies forget is that batteries have no changed all that much since the days of the Baker Electric in terms of efficiency and longevity.

They also disregard certain laws of physics, and seem to think that a battery can store more energy than it takes in.

The 40-mile range is probably optimistic, as is the Nissan Leaf's 100-mile range.

In case anyone missed this wrinkle in the Obama trip to "The View".

Obama will be attending a DNC fundraiser at Anna Wintour (Editor of Vogue) while in NYC.

By appearing onThe View while in NYC, that makes his trip "official business", meaning the taxpayers pick up the tab!

So, let's summarize:

Blow off the Boy Scout's at their once-every-five-years Jamboree, instead travel to NYC for a partisan DNC fundraiser with multi-millionaire luminaries from the fashion/intelligensia class, and get stroked by an adoring Joy Behar while Woopy fellates him.

And the US taxpayers pick up the tab!

How's that "Hope & Change" working out so far?

87 Chuck Todd's tweets on why he cannot sleep at night:

For those wondering, the context that I'm seeing JournOlist, it's in the same week that Breitbart pulls his latest stunt. There is this belief with conservatives that there is a liberal bias in mainstream journalism. There isn't. You can argue geographic bias and even cultural bias but the idea that any LONGTIME, legitimate news organization is actually advocating for one political party or ideology is absurd. But JournOlist gave the conspriacy theorists about the media an "a ha" or "gotcha" moment that actually, when one looks closely isn't there. There aren't a lot of mainstream journalists involved in this JournOlist but there are enough that work for longtime mainstream journalistic enterprises to give the tabloid conservative provocateurs something to run with -- a sledgehammer, if you will, to yell "told ya so."

So in short, what's depressed me and caused me to lose sleep was the both incidents coming so close together; the fact Breitbart is taken seriously by so many and has outlets to push his agenda, combined with too many on the left deciding that the best way to fight this rise in conservative media outlets to is actually create a liberal type of campaign or organization. In short, it makes me wonder, what the hell is happening to journalism.

I saw a bullfight in Sevilla two years ago and while I was glad to see it, it is something that I don't really want to see again. It has its roots in Roman blood sports as well as in the flamenco traditions. A few years ago, there was a big controversy when it was discovered that the bulls were being doped before the match to make them somewhat less dangerous. Odd parallel with the steroid-addled decade of baseball during the 90's. I'm sorry to hear that and I hope the Spaniards raise a stink about. If they try to do that in Andalusia (which is the southern part of Spain, and not Catalunya which has a very distinct identity and separate language from Spanish), there will be a very strong reaction.

99 I thought Tesla's cars were like 80 thousand dollars.

I didn't read very carefully. Base price is $49,000 which includes the $7,500 Govt. subsidy. The base model also is only rated for 160 MPC so you are correct the price for 300MPC is probably $80,000.

But for that small investment they claim you will save $1,300 annually on fuel cost. Though they probably used a 20 MPG car in that calculation.

To MrScribbler's point we are not close to the tech necessary to make this anything more than a rich mans toy right now.

That's the best we can do? 40 miles on battery power.

Posted by: Ben at July 28, 2010 09:49 AM

For all GM's brave talk about the Volt being a "game changer," I have it on good authority that the company can only build a maximum of 30,000-40,000 Volts annually. Even if all are sold (no doubt gubmint motor pools will be full of the damn things), the company will lose serious money on each one.

I am guessing that the Federal Government will buy up the unsold inventory each year for government vehicles.

why in the world would i pay 20 grand extra for a 40 miles or even 100 miles?

If i buy an electric car, i want it to be nothing but electric. No gas. That is the frigging point.

Also, I am interested to see in the next 5-7 years how the first hybrids are doing. I've always thought they will need 10 thousand + in work after 10 years or so. I can't imagine the battery in their lasting very long.

Charles is not a "secret Muslim" but he's going all out for mosque construction.  That's what I've noticed about Islam: it causes non-Muslims to basically conduct da'wa (call to Islam) for it through intimidation.

The old Charles would have at least noticed the complete lack of church construction in the Dar-al-Islam.  Trying to convert a Muslim is a crime throughout the world and Charles thinks it's a good idea to help the one-way ratchet to Islamization of the world.  You know, for tolerance.

So far, the hybrids have done pretty well on battery life. Most are still using their original batteries as of now. It helps that the carmakers (Toyota, et. al.) are subsidizing battery-pack replacements at this point. Cost to the owners is somewhere around $8K, I'm told, or roughly 50% of the real cost.

Forget styrofoam. Develop a car that runs on Democrat promises and it'll have virtually infinite range. If you can ignore the pollution/fallout, that is.

126 O/T: Okay here's one of the big problems with growth of government today.

It starts like this:

From Yahoo News: Goofy activist lady sits on streetcorners talking to people about sex, wanting them to wear female condoms.

Fine, no big deal, even if it is a little weird.  Okay, so I think, who's actually paying for this?  Turns out activist lady works for The Women's Collective.  Well with a name like that you know there's some hard-core leftism going on there.  Sure enough, in their website's advocacy section, they argue for ObamaCare and a "strong public option" and all the rest of the leftist health care nonsense.  They are of course a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.  So how do they get their money?  Why, from the DC city government.  Just read this heart-wrenching WaPo article about them from last fall, where the writer laments the fact that their budget has been "slashed" to "only" $375,000 per year.

(Oh and The Women's Collective is hiring!)

So we have these leftist nonprofits, funded by the government, who advocate for more government, which then spawns more nonprofits, funded by the government, etc., etc.

It's enough to make you sick.

128 Good Morning Morons

On the Tesla/Volt scenario I did some research not long ago.  The Tesla is able to achieve its dramatic stats for range and speed by using a LiHO battery vs the standard lead-acid that the Volt will use.

That is the main reason that it cost so much more for the Tesla than the Volt.  But that is not the end of the story. Both companies have received HUGE government subsidies for the development of these cars. I am not talking about tax credits or additional tax deductions here that the commies all squeal about when some evil company gets them. I am talking about direct payments in taxpayer cash.

Also, both have a relatively short life span for the batteries. The Volt has an estimated 5 years with a replacement cost of $3,000. The Tesla has an 8 year span and IF you pay for it in advance they will replace the battery for $8,000.  What they don't tell you is the company is about to go bankrupt.

In this manner the Volt was never designed to be actually sold to real life consumers. Only an idiot would pay the estimated 45K - 50K price tag for this POS that has less range than a damn electric golf cart. This car had one purpose only, that was to get GM some much needed givernment give-a-way cash.  This is much like the god-awful coal to oil plant that Dow Chemical ran for a decade at its Baton Rouge plant. The day the government subsidies expired (from Jimmy Peanut) the plant was shut down and bulldozed away.

And speaking of electric golf carts I saw one advertised that would go at a top speed of 25 mph and had a range of 35 miles.  If you added the optional solar cell sun roof it extended the range to 50 miles on a sunny day.

Since the overwhelming majority of the miles driven in this country is the daily back and forth to work at a distance of ten miles or less this would be ideal except for one fact. Damn if the average Moron wants to get on a freeway at 25 mph and share that freeway with a semi going 70 mph.

So, if the commies in government were really serious with eliminating the use of gasoline/oil for transportation they would outlaw the internal combustion engine.   That includes the use of said engine for the rich and the politicians.

Personally I wouldn't mid using an electric golf cart for local travel IF all that was on the road was more golf carts and bicycles.

It's not just idiot politicians in Michigan. This is a nationwide, even worldwide, disease.

Spain's monster failure with government subsidy of "green jobs" is being ignored by the pampered, corrupt fatcats in governments everywhere. From Osama Obama to the lords of the EU, politicians have been so insulated from reality that they see themselves as above the laws of physics, ethics, economics and decency.

Until we rid ourselves of both the enablers and the laws they have enacted to solidify their grip on us (while rewarding their cronies), we will never again enjoy a day of peace or the ability to enjoy the fruits of our own labors.

That's the Lotus-built, two-seat high-speed golf cart, Vic. It does not even meet the range figures quoted for it. It is neither practical nor comfortable for most buyers. And Tesla loses a shit-ton of money on each one.

It is not the four-door, extended-range sedan Elon Musk and his Tesla geeks have been yapping about (and getting vast sums of public money for).

F. Chuck Todd should be losing sleep over MSNBC horrible ratings and the fact that the left wing management at MSNBC is about to be sweept out the door by Comcast, who, it appears, actually like to make a profit.

As should Ed Schultz, Chrissy Matthews, Keith Olbermann, et al.

What would be funnier? Seeing all those guys fired or keeping them on the air but somehow forcing them to "report" the news in an unbiased manner?

160 I'm not so sure about that Crookcast changing things. It's pretty left wing. After Obozo's election I'm pretty sure Crookcast was running a 24 hour Odumbo channel until his coronation

I think that was actually an infomercial paid for by the campaign/the DNC - it also ran on other carriers.

I ran into this problem at work several years ago in doing a review for a procedure change involving performing a type of safety review that required special qualifications. Its complicated so I will not get into the details)

In any event the procedure change involved maintaining and publishing a list of the people who were qualified to perform these reviews.  The list contained the SSNs of the people. I turned in a comment as part of my review that the SSNs were not needed and could be used in identity theft therefore they should not be included on the published list.

They blew off my comment with some snarky remark. When the people (corporate) came on site to discuss the change at a meeting I told the individual responsible for the change that since he thought the SSNs were not a problem and would be included regardless of the potential for abuse that I would hold him personally accountable. If my identity was "stolen" and I could trace it back to that list I would sue him personally and not the company.

When the revision finally went through there were no SSNs. This is what people need to do with government bureaucrats. However the problem is that people and their bloodthirsty lawyers are always in it for the money and the damn bureaucrats are never held accountable.

The taxpayers are the ones who pay for it.

170 There is an article by a certain 'Ezra Klein' running around today, talking about the filibuster.

I have been of mixed thoughts on the filibuster. Originally, I think it is clear that--back in the day when actual oral debates before assembled Senators mattered--that it was a method used to keep the debate going because it was felt the issue had not yet been exhausted. I'm sure there were "legilslative ledgermain" aspects to it, but there was definitely a certain element of purity behind the purpose.

Now, with the end of truly deliberative sessions, and the end of the requirement to actually 'filibuster'--that is speak continually without yielding the floor--the filibuster has obviously morphed into sort of a quasi-Madisonian supermajority requirement. I am actually not against this per se, but I do want to give it more thought, and I sympathize with the argument that says if it is to be viewed as a Madisonian-type requirement for a discretionary supermajority then it needs to be enshrined via Constitutional amendment instead of legislative rules passed at the beginning of each session.

But it occurred to me today that the filibuster as it is today could perhaps viewed in a different light--that it has not strayed as far from its roots as it thought, and is thus still a valid legislative rule. While the filibuster as practiced today is fairly clearly a tool used, not to prolong legislative debate, but to actually block legislation, it can also be clearly viewed as the following--that when a bill is filibustered it has indeed the strength needed to pass the legislature--that the legislative debate is over--but that it does not have the strength, it has not yet reached the ability, to close off the national debate--except by a narrow majority.

In other words, that legislative majorities are not permanent and that perhaps on this issue being filibustered the ideas at play should be referred back to the people. If the people truly approve of the ideas proposed they will in time remove the problem of the filibuster by either making their desires known to their representatives and/or removing and replacing said same. If not enough do, then they won't. Who can say they have a problem with this, if popular sovereignty with delegated powers be the desired and proper state of things?

Thus, the filibuster is a public good, for the Senate is where the passions of the people go off to cool, as has been said before. A bill or action that can pass without being filibustered is a bill that, even if opposed, is not opposed in such opposition as to cause further hate and discontent down the road because it was large in effect but small in majority. The filibuster thus assures that only those things that are conducive to the continued stability of the American Republic are passed into law, for a bill or action (such as a confirmation of a nominee) that is filibustered will assumedly still remain a desire of those who first proposed it--which means they can then appeal, via the process of follow-on campaigns, to the sovereign, the people, for their amplified views on the subject.

Thus, the filibuster should be viewed as an indication that the issue under discussion is one that is both of such import and of insufficient support that a further discussion by the true determiners of the fate of the Republic, the people themselves, is needed before further action can be taken. Far from being a sign of arrogance by those who choose to wield it, its adoption as a rule is a collective sign of humility by the legislature; as bills of large import should have large amounts of support; and large changes should not be accomplished by  barely adequate means--for it then engenders several years of discord as both supporters and opponents--realizing the narrow nature of their victory (or defeat)--become engaged in a fight that causes the law to whipsaw as each side gains momentary victories. The filibuster thus assures that if an issue passes, then for at least a while, the issue will be settled and that societal energies can be spent on other areas more conducive to furthering the happiness of the people, and that both opponents and supporters of the issue at hand will, instead of concentrating on electoral and legislative legerdemain to gain quick victory the moment the strength suffices, will learn instead how to better present cases to the public in a way that hopefully moves them in the direction they feel necessary, to the general improvement of the commonweal all around. This is because a nation that educates itself and concerns itself and involves itself with its own governing affairs; a nation that in its distributed mass argues the issues instead of delegating them to a remote few for a resolution; is a nation in which the strains of liberty will long resonate and not die off as dimly remembered and remote echoes because of man's natural inclination to be concerned with his own day to day affairs, laying the ground needed for the ambitious to then act while few are watching--the fate of so many nations before.
