I've no problem with arresting a drunk guy creating a hazard on a public road, but the part at the end where the sheriff says he can come arrest you for motor vehicle crimes if you're mowing your own front lawn scares me. And I know the point of the law isn't to keep 13-year-olds (can't legally drive in Iowa) from doing yard work, it's to criminalize alcohol consumption, even in your own home.

Amongst women and children
And to beat violence, you must ignore the focus groups
You must send in the Mossad, turn of the BBC, CNN
And don't look back
Rest assured there'll be no more Middle Eastern crisis, hell!
There'll be no more Middle East!
These are your people Liberty
Pull up your dress today
And tattooed is "property of The USA
A subsidiary of Halliburton"
Surprise?!
But a roaring lion is about to be on earth
Hey, Jihad Joe? Guess what? We're coming to get you!

Follow the Daily Kos logic here, it is literally mind blowing:
In other words, leftist, statist, idiot, enemies of democracy should love the constitution because -
when people who actually believe in the constitution begin to insist that the constitution be followed, it riles the enemies of the constitution and makes them more powerful.

Nope. Some problems, a good portion of which were caused by out of towners, i.e., anarchists.

The Obama-Pelosi Lame Duck Strategy
Union 'card-check,' cap and trade, and so much more.
[ . . . ]
The rush to recess gives Democrats little time to pass any major laws. That's why there have been signs in recent weeks that party leaders are planning an ambitious, lame-duck session to muscle through bills in December they don't want to defend before November. Retiring or defeated members of Congress would then be able to vote for sweeping legislation without any fear of voter retaliation.
[ . . . ]
In the House, Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, told reporters last month that for bills like "card check"—the measure to curb secret-ballot union elections—"the lame duck would be the last chance, quite honestly, for the foreseeable future."
[ . . . ]
Other lame-duck possibilities? Senate ratification of the New Start nuclear treaty, a federally mandated universal voter registration system to override state laws, and a budget resolution to lock in increased agency spending.
[ . . . ]
Mike Allen of Politico.com reports one reason President Obama failed to mention climate change legislation during his recent, Oval Office speech on the Gulf oil spill was that he wants to pass a modest energy bill this summer, then add carbon taxes or regulations in a conference committee with the House, most likely during a lame-duck session. The result would be a climate bill vastly more ambitious, and costly for American consumers and taxpayers, than moderate "Blue Dogs" in the House would support on the campaign trail. "We have a lot of wiggle room in conference," a House Democratic aide told the trade publication Environment & Energy Daily last month.

I want to explain my comment above about the Daily Kos article: This is a wolf in sheeps clothing, imo. And here's why; If the writer truly feels this way about what they are saying, there is no way to shoehorn this into the left's way of thinking at this point in time. If they truly feel this way, they aren't Democrat - period.
I am ultra suspicious about an article like this because the Dems know that they are likely to get their asses handed to them and one very good way to prevent that is to pretend to be something they aren't.
Are the left revolutionaries? You had better believe it. Are they revolutionaries for original intent? Guess.
Let's see them apply this same logic to 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.' If they do, they will become the most vocal antagonists of abortion.
They will try to co opt originalist beliefs of the right and apply them to the collectivist beliefs of the left in advance of the coming elections. 1) They don't fit, and 2) we can't allow them to pull the wool over everyones eyes again.

From S&L:
GOP leaders let demagogues set tone, lawmaker saysWASHINGTON – Too many Republican leaders are acquiescing to a poisonous "demagoguery" that threatens the party’s long-term credibility, says a veteran GOP House member who was defeated in South Carolina’s primary last month.
While not naming names, 12-year incumbent Rep. Bob Inglis suggested in interviews with The Associated Press that tea party favorites such as former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and right-wing talk show hosts like Glenn Beck are the culprits.
He cited a claim made famous by Palin that the Democratic health care bill would create "death panels" to decide whether elderly or sick people should get care.
"There were no death panels in the bill Â… and to encourage that kind of fear is just the lowest form of political leadership. ItÂ’s not leadership. ItÂ’s demagoguery," said Inglis, one of three Republican incumbents who have lost their seats in Congress to primary and state party convention challengers this year.
Mr. Inglis meet Mr. Berwick.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Half of Americans reject President Barack Obama's lawsuit against Arizona's controversial immigration law, with only a third supporting the move, according to a Gallup Poll released Friday.
Nearly eight in 10 Republicans (79 percent) opposed the lawsuit, while 56 percent of Democrats were in favor of the Obama administration's decision.
Overall, 50 percent of Americans said they were against the move, compared to 33 percent in favor.
Other polls have also shown strong national support for Arizona's measure, the first law making illegal immigration a state crime.
Obviously people oppose Barry's lawsuit because his middle name is Hussein

This is exactly why Bennett in Utah lost. He denounced "death panels", how the hell are these people this dense?
If there is a limited amount of monies afforded, what the hell do they think will happen when that money runs out? Services and medicine will have to be limited, and who the hell gets to decided this? A DEATH PANEL, yes, they won't say directly who lives and who dies, but when they deny people medicine because of limited funds and therefore services cut, it will lead to early death for those deemed too sick or too far along in their disease and not worth saving.
Hell, just look at what is now happening to the post office, services are being cut because money is tight and its budget is being limited.

Remember when they passed that BS hate crimes law that added homo hate as a hate crime? Well the most onerous addition to that law was not the homo hate although that is all you heard about in the MFM.
It also reworded the activating portion of the law to say that any time the DOJ decided that local prosecution of a "hate crime" was not adequate the DOJ could intervene and prosecute as a hate crime.
Said "adequacy" to be determined by the AG. Note that the original law required a ruling by a federal court on the "adequacy" before the DOJ could act.
With the current AG all crimes by whites against blacks are "hate crimes" and no crimes by "blacks" can ever be a hate crime.

With increasing frequency, one gets the uneasy feeling, especially lately, that the leaders of the so called "Progressive" movement consider it to be a detriment to their cause among their rank and file members, and so who would be surprised if the Obama Administration decided to classify it as a birth defect?

Holder's finally found a racial case to prosecute! Video of Black Panthers waving truncheons around and telling whitey to get the fuck out isn't enough evidence, but a case that's already had a trial and a guilty verdict is being closely examined. No doubt a full-blown civil rights investigation will ensue. It seems to me that with Eric Holder, Barack Obama found his replacement for Jeremiah Wright rather quickly. Of course, with Obama's "private" Blackberry that no one is allowed to see, we only have Wright's public statements to go on that Obama has stopped talking to him. Who wants to bet that's just another mountain of bullshit?

Looks like we're in for a new era of racial hatred, discrimination and violence in America. Knee-jerk haters such as Osama Obama, Holder and their pets (Shabazz, Wright, the DoJ) have been given a free pass to Take it to The Man, and that's what they're going to do.
While they and their posse loot, burn, steal and destroy, the race-guilt-ridden hippie children of the 60s will serve as willing apologists for them.
The potential consequences are horrific. How many will die in the rioting and purges?

My kids want to go fishing and I don't think hubby is ever going to take them. I plan on going to the fishing section of Bass Pro and asking what I need.
That is both a difficult question for the salesman and an invitation to get sold a whole hellova lotta stuff you don't need or will ever use. You would be better off to buy some magazines and check out the equipment they are using for catching whatever kind of fish you are interested in. Generally a medium weight rig for 8-10 pound test line and a medium action 6 foot rod will handle most kinds of fishing. Stay away from bait casters, they require too much practice to get good with. Spinning rigs are easiest. Do you intend to fish live bait or artificials? Bass? Catfish? Bluegill? Crappie? River? Lake? From a boat or from the shore? Many variables.

Common sense would guide you to set up an experiment (even if you didn't realize that's what you were doing) to ascertain if the fridge would eventually cool the room.
People without common sense would simply keep the door open indefinitely, irrespective of results, and ultimately conclude that there was something special or "wrong" with the room and/or the fridge if it didn't feel colder.
You can really tell who has common sense when dealing with IT issues. People with common sense can trouble shoot computer issues, identifying the nature of the problem even if they can't fix them.

I don't think Cabela's does, but there are many places close by that do. You will find that Utah is a very, very friendly 2nd amendment state. There is a gun shop about a half mile from cabela's that offers firearms training and there are indoor and outdoor shooting ranges everywhere. There is an indoor range about 15 minutes from where I live where you can fire any of their guns they have in stock to determine if you like it. That includes a 50 cal. BMG. Those are pretty loud when fired indoors and you can feel the concussion two or three booths away. You'll love it here.

Mustn't let them get away with that. If they fish they must bait their own hooks, take the fish off when caught, and clean the fish. I'll cut them some slack and say mom should cook the fish (coated in corn meal and fried of course). Once they eat fresh caught fish they will never want any other fish. Red Lobster would go bankrupt if more people fished and ate it fresh!

Vic named most of the stuff you'll need but a pocket knife and a pair of needle nose pliers come in handy. The pliers are for removing hooks and they make really nice ones especially for fishing. You'll also need some sinkers -- a variety pack of split shot will do. And I'd ditch the fish basket. I guess Vic uses them for his catch? I use a stringer. You can't beat live bait but skip the minnows, chubs, etc. unless you know how to use them.

Yeah, so far we are feeling pretty chuffed about the whole thing... with the possible exception of what to do about our (only) car, a VW Eos convertible. Mr. Y-not is planning on getting an AWD SUV, but we would like to keep the Eos if possible. So we're going to try this winter and see how it does. I've been reading good things on the Eos owner boards about how it handles on snow so I'm trying to remain optimistic that will snow tires and some common sense, it'll be ok. If not, we'll probably have to trade it in for something more snow-friendly (probably can't afford three cars). It's in cherry condition, 2 years garaged in SoCal with 8000 miles, so it should get a good trade-in in Southern Utah, I'd think.
The people have been delightful. I interacted with a bunch of folks while looking for a house to rent and what a pleasure it was to feel like there was a common frame of reference in terms of the basics of politics and family life (even though we aren't LDS).

Yeah I forgot the sinkers. Get a pack of small split ones and yes, pliers for squeezing the sinkers and removing hooks that get swallowed. BTW, if they are swallowing the hooks the hook size being used is too small.
And yes, I prefer the basket rather than the stringer. I prefer that in the case that you catch a couple and not enough to make a meal you can turn them lose undamaged.

That too, but if the size is too small for the ones that are biting they will still swallow them. That is why you take multiple sizes and switch up if they are swallowing them and go down if they are nibbling the bait off without taking the hook (unless you have a mess of aggravating turtles)
No you never know what size will be biting on any given day or time.

Sorry--I wasn't intending to be heavy.
Here's what I meant: Rather than thinking of it as "common sense," I think of the more easily recognizable idea of people doing stupid things.
Doing something stupid is a behavior.
Being stupid is a trait.
There are people who are condemned to doing stupid things. Whether this is because they are short on intelligence, foresight, or impulse control makes no difference. I lump them together in the stupid-as-a-trait pile. I was assuming that what you said about how schools do not offer courses on common sense was a recommended prescription for removing people from this pile through development.
My contention is that removing people from the stupid-as-a-trait pile is not the big problem. The big problem is that the things we do as a society to assuage the suffering of the stupid-as-a-trait people perversely encourage stupid behavior from people who are not in that pile.
One example that sticks in my memory is a guy I knew a long time ago. He had his shit together pretty good--or so I thought. One day at work, he was bitching that his wife had failed to pay a utility bill on time. He said he was especially bent about it because they were working toward a home purchase and he was worried about what a late payment would do to their credit score. During the course of commiserating and trying to assure him that it wasn't a big deal, he let slip that they used to habitually pay bills late, but they were trying to clean up their act in order to buy a house.
WTF? I thought it was "common sense" for people to pay bills on time. Apparently not so. But it's worse than that. Because the utility commissions cap late fees and burden service providers with onerous procedures for cutting services to help the stupid-as-a-trait people, this joker thought it was all right to procrastinate until his final cut-off notice before settling his bills. I would bet that had he been hit with a huge late charge or returned home one night to a house without power, he would have never developed his stupid behavior habit.

Since it sounds like you've never gone fishing I'll give you lots of advice. It's something you have to learn to do but it's so much fun and such a "bonding experience" it's well worth the effort.
1st) Non- fishing gear. Clothing: Hats are a must. Sneakers are good shoes. Shirts and pants are up to you but since you'll prolly be in the sun a lot take that into consideration. I like long pants and sleeves that I can roll up but that's just me. Sunscreen and insect repellent are a must. So are food and liquor drinks. If you can't catch fish you can always have a picnic while trying.
2nd) Intelligence. Find out where what kind of fish are biting. Nobody (especially kids) likes getting "skunked". Somebody you know or his friend's friend should be able to divulge where you can catch something. Bluegills and sunfish are fine for the youngsters because they're easy to catch and provide lots of action. But you have to know how to handle them, something I'll cover later.
3rd) Fishing gear. Vic and I covered most of that. Spin cast reels are best for kids -- they have a funnel shaped front end and a thumb button. The rod shouldn't be much more than a foot longer than the height of a tyke but for older kids a six foot rod is fine. I guess the Zebco rod and reel combinations come with fishing line already loaded on them and six to eight pound test (breaking strength) is about right. If you have to load your own line Stren is a good brand. Run it through the line guides on the rod and the hole in the "funnel" (you'll have to unscrew it), tie it to the reel, and wind it up with somebody providing light tension on the line. Don't fill the really real full. With any reel you have to adjust the drag, a clutch that allows a 30 pound fish to pull your eight pound test line off the reel without snapping it. Your reel will have instructions on how to adjust it. It's not rocket science -- if you can pull on the line hard enough that it feels like it's stretching a lot you need to lower the drag.
So now you have the basics -- food and clothing, a place to fish and the fishing gear. Next:
4) Fishing. The easiest way to start kids fishing is bobber fishing from the shore of a lake or pond. In order to do this you have to be able to cast a fishing line. So take your Zebco out to a field and learn how to do it. An empty soccer field or large yard is a great place to learn. Since you're going to be using live bait you have to simulate casting with it. You have to cast live bait gently or it will fly off of your hook.
Place a small bobber on the line about 4' from the end. Bobbers have a top (white with a red button) end and a red bottom end. Press the edge of the button down and slip the fishing line underneath the brass hook. Then press the whole button down and slip the line under the bottom brass hook. Put a small (baby pea) sized piece of split shot at the end of the line and start practicing. You want to let out about three or four feet of line (minimum) from the reel using the thumb button, lock the line by pressing in the thumb button and with a smooth motion sweep the rod over your head, releasing the thumb button about 30 - 45 degrees past vertical. Don't snap the rod. It's kind of like riding a bike -- once you learn how to do it you'll never forget. Learning how to cast is probably the most fun part of learning to fish for kids. And it's an important skill to learn because nobody likes a hook in their ear.
So now it's time to tie a hook on the line and go fishing. There's a bajillion fishing knots but for small fish you don't need any mad knot skillz. Three or four tight knots will work fine, clipping off the extra line with some fingernail snips (an essential piece of fishing gear I forgot to mention earlier). Put a split shot about eight inches above the hook. The split shot holds the bait down and helps keep the hook from fouling in the line as you cast. Unless you're fishing in very shallow water, put the bobber at least three feet above the hook. Bait the hook, cast and wait. Reel in any slack line between you and your bobber. You do this by waiting for the bobber to settle down and slowly reeling in the line until the bobber moves a bit in response.
When (and if) the fishies start paying attention to your bait you'll typically see your bobber travel and then start to bob. Don't do anything until the bobber goes underwater. And not just a few inches down and back up. You wait until it goes down! Then you SHARPLY pull the rod tip back as quick as you can, setting the hook in the fish's mouth. Then you reel it in and kill it and gut it and scale it and cook it and eat it. Or more likely put it on a stringer and do all that later.
Vic made a very good point about getting a variety pack of hooks because there's nothing more frustrating for a little kid than to see his bobber move around around all day and never being able to catch a fish. You might also have to move the bobber up and down to find the fish at the right depth. You might also need to use more weight to cast farther and therefore need to use a larger bobber. Sometimes you just have to move to another spot.
Some people like to introduce their kids to fishing on trout streams. I love stream fishing. If you want to try it don't use a bobber. You always cast downstream so the current doesn't wash your bait under rocks upstream where it gets trapped. And you have to pay very close attention to what's going on because your only clue of a fish nibbling on your bait is a tiny twitch on your pole. It's very popular here in Pennsylvania on opening trout day where people are shoulder to shoulder fishing on newly stocked streams. I consider it a form of mass insanity.
5) I caught one, what to do now? Okay, you've caught a fish. Most likely you didn't need a net for it. It was a little thing. A bluegill. So you grab it and THESE SPINES JABBED THE HELL OUT OF MY HAND!!!! Heh. You rubbed the fur the wrong way. Bluegills, sunfish, any kind of bass and most anything other than a trout has a spiny dorsal fin that will cause you lots of pain if handled incorrectly. Just like any woman, it has to be stroked the right way. So while it's dangling and thrashing on the end of the line you simply pass your hand over its head, compressing the dorsal fin FIRMLY against its body. Then you're in control.
6) Catfish and other critters. Catfish, prehistoric throwbacks, are fun to catch and great to eat but don't ever mess with them if you don't know how to handle them. They have very sharp spines on their dorsal and pectoral fins and will "horn" you with them given the slightest chance. The pain will last for hours. They thrash wildly after being caught in order to inflict maximum pain. Use your pliers to pick the fish up by the hook and shake it it off or simply cut the line. It'll survive. I once caught an 18" bullhead with six hooks in his lips and most of them were little more than rust.
Turtles. Snapping turtles can appear almost anywhere. I have genuine giant turtle stories I won't bore you with but they can bite your fingers off so just cut the line if you catch one.
Hellbenders. Another prehistoric type critter. They're like 18" long salamanders that can bite real hard. They mostly live in large rivers. Like snapping turtles, just cut the line if you catch one.
Now go out and enjoy the great outdoors!
