A report from the Commerce Department showed sales at US retailers rose less than forecast in July, indicating the lack of jobs is prompting Americans to rein in spending. Purchases increased 0.4 percent, led by autos and gasoline. Excluding auto dealers and service stations, demand dropped 0.1 percent.
With all of this hard work Barry has done getting the economy back on its feet the man deserves a vacation or ten

My sister's getting married in four weeks to a guy she "fell in love with" four weeks ago. In her words, "it's like things you think only happen in movies!" This guy is fourth in a series of extremely bad decisions. Also she's a dry drunk. I have no information other than that, because my family has shut me out until I abandon my delusion that this might not be the best decision she's ever made.
Other than that, life's peachy.

Thirty-three-year-old Elias Abuelazam (eh-lee-AHS' ah-boo-ehl-ah-ZAHM') was scheduled to appear in a Fulton County court on Friday. He was arrested Wednesday before boarding a flight to his native Israel and charged with attempted murder in a July 27 knife strike in Flint, Mich., where all but four of the 18 attacks occurred.
Racially motivated redneck tea party serial killer turns out to be sort of not. Just on FNC, not that they're drawing any conclusions.

Philadelphia Housing Authority chief Carl Greene facing foreclosure
The mortgage foreclosure crisis has claimed an unlikely victim: Carl R. Greene, executive director of the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA).
Wells Fargo Bank has foreclosed on Greene's $615,035 condominium in the upscale Naval Square development in the city's Schuylkill section.
In a lawsuit filed July 27, Wells Fargo said the amount in dispute was $386,685.22.
Greene, 53, runs the nation's fourth-largest public housing agency and is one of the highest-paid public officials in the city. His salary is $306,370, and last year he got a $44,188 bonus.
. . .
Greene took over PHA in 1998, after serving as executive director of the Detroit Housing Commission. He also worked for housing authorities in Atlanta and Washington.
. . .
Greene has drawn praise for his results in building housing and reviving neighborhoods and criticism for his sometimes combative, forceful style. During the administration of President George W. Bush, Greene sued HUD and accused the agency of punishing PHA for not giving land to the politically connected Philadelphia music producer and developer Kenny Gamble. The case was resolved out of court.

Iran nuclear plant start date set
Russia says it will undertake a key step next week towards starting up a reactor at Iran's first nuclear power station.
Russia's state atomic corporation, which is building the plant, said engineers will begin loading the Bushehr reactor with fuel.
Once this reactor has been fueled, it becomes impossible to strike it without spreading nuclear materials everywhere. The Iranians have also learned from the Israeli strike on Osirak - they've decentralized the components of the program and put them near civilian areas./Have to hand it to the Russians for spreading the project out for over 15 years. They're still bastards though.

No offense taken; that pretty much nails it. I just wish I could convince my mom of that; Sis is the golden child, so she could rob a bank and still be in favor with the 'rents. Plus, you know, the 2nd and 3rd times weren't her fault; if the guys had just changed to meet her standards and blah blah blah ... (You get the picture.)

Would the French or Germans step in to sell to the Iranians as prior to and during the GWB administration? From chemical warfare, biological warfare to nuclear warfare energy.
That's something that killed me about the whole Iraq war kerfuffle. Everyone in the American left said it was americans killing for oil and that we needed to be more like the selfless and forward thinking Europeans who were against the war. Specifically Chirac who told Colin Powell that France would support the war only to stab us in the back at the last second.
The Europeans weren't against the war based on some noble principle, they were against the war because Saddam Hussein was one of their biggest clients for everything from bunker technology, chemicals, biological material, all the way down to french suits. They didn't want to overthrow a genocidal dictator for financial reasons. However the left, who was only too willing to look at american motives in detail and draw suspect conclusion were completely unwilling to look closely at European reasons for opposing the war.
Also, another reason they didn't support the war is because the UN is filled with Europeans, who were making a killing (both figuratively and literally) in the Oil for Food scam.
The Europeans have been selling dual use products in the middle east for a long time, and yet they take none of the blame for what is happening.. F'ing Germany, who for obvious reasons is an expert on bunker technology, sells their information to anyone. We've been bombing German built bunkers since the 1940s and probably will continue for all the forseeable future.

Democrats Launch “F**K Tea” Campaign:
No, it’s not a joke and while some people might be up in arms over it, I think it’s some of the best news for the Tea Party agenda and it’s coming right from the enemy camp. Because liberals just know how to keep it classy, they’ve decided their campaign against the Tea Party movement will be to launch a new logo with “F*ck Tea” as it’s catchy little slogan.
Politico writes:
"To that end, the Agenda Project, a new, progressive group with roots in New York’s fundraising scene and a goal of strengthening the progressive movement, has launched the “F*ck Tea” project, which is aimed, the group’s founder Erica Payne wrote in an e-mail this morning, “to dismiss the tea party and promote the progressive cause.”http://tinyurl.com/27ksnaw

51 That's terrible about your sister. You really need to know someone before you make any kind of serious commitment to them. At the beginning it's all just words, and a person can get away with merely telling you exactly what you want to hear. You end up painting your own little fairy tale around them, but in reality it's a big load of garbage. They could be the absolute scum of the earth and you wouldn't even know or care. By the time you figure it out, it's far too late.

However, the Israelis (not putting the US into this because it'll be a cold day in Hell before President Pissypants authorizes a strike on Iran's nuclear program) will be hesitant to attempt a military strike with the potential of causing massive civilian casualties because a) They respect life and b) don't want to give the world an excuse to hit them back. You are an asshole and that can be your only motivation for even bringing this up. It's an outmoded idea which is a relic of history which is also incorrect historically. Declaring it legally lucky will do no harm to anyone and will finally grant the the cultural benefits of luckiness to those born on a Friday the 13th that they are Constitutionally entitled to. Two options -
1. Israel goes after Iran preemptively (not really at this point, but whatever.) Lots of bad press, maybe even a UN resolution, but seriously don't see the UN putting troops on the ground in Israel.
2. Israel holds off, then gets nuked. Then when they want to retaliate, they're in the same situation they're in now - no international support, no backup, even from the US, guaranteed bad press/UN resolution. Just like #1, only with lots of dead Israelis under a mushroom cloud.
Neither one is a good situation, but I know which way I'd go, if I were making decisions.

Good news: Layoffs!
New job losses would not ordinarily qualify as good news, but Reuters reports that a lack of Senate action on cap-and-trade legislation is forcing the Chicago Climate Exchange to lay off about half of its remaining “really talented” 50-employee staff.
The first round of layoffs by owner Intercontinental Exchange Inc., which acquired CCX in April for $604 million, began July 23 when about 20 people were let go. Employees were reportedly told that the American marketplace for carbon credits was being “restructured.”

Remember Samantha Powers, and how she openly stated the desire to use NATO troops to enforce a "2-state solution"? This would be orders of magnitude worse.
The problem is legion. I agree that if you are the Israelis, there is no option. No matter what happens after a strike, it cannot be worse than a nation who has threatened your annhilation having nuclear weapons.
However, we in the world will have to live with the aftermath of such a strike.
This won't be like the Osiraq strike, which the French helped with in a little known fact, where the Israelis strike, Iraq bitches, and everyone in the world condemns Israel in public and then pats them on the back in private.
This will be different. Iran might try to invade parts of Iraq, Syria, Hizballah, Hamas, and Fatah will probably attack Israel, Turkey might get involved on the muslim side, which would put us in a terrible position of potentially having to fight a NATO ally. I know NATO is worthless, but that would be a total end to the alliance if Turkey were to become involved.
Iran might start mining the Straits of Hormuz or using suicide bombers on jet skis and speed boats to blow up oil tankers in the Straits. It might try to use sabatoge to blow up Iraqi oil wells near the border.
Honestly who freaking knows what might happen. If the government of Iran is willing to shoot its civillians, they would be willing to do just about anything.
And please don't fall for the line we heard about Iraq, that the people hate their government and would welcome freedom from it. Sure some might, but they tend to be the weak people who aren't willing to fight for freedom themselves. When bombs start falling on your country, you tend to unify around your government, no matter how much you hate it.
This just won't end well for anyone except the Russians and Chinese.

Syria, Hizballah, Hamas, and Fatah will probably attack Israel,
Wouldn't be the first time. My money would be on the Israelis, even without our help.
Turkey might get involved on the muslim side, which would put us in a terrible position of potentially having to fight a NATO ally. I know NATO is worthless, but that would be a total end to the alliance if Turkey were to become involved.
I could go for that too.
Iran might start mining the Straits of Hormuz or using suicide bombers on jet skis and speed boats to blow up oil tankers in the Straits. It might try to use sabatoge to blow up Iraqi oil wells near the border.
Been there, done that. Suicide boat hit a Japanese tanker there last week. And Iran has already been blowing the shit out of Iraq going after our guys.Posted by: Bomber at August 13, 2010 06:25 AM (qzoN5)
In the "What are my relatives thinking?" department: Got a call from my mom yesterday, and in the course of conversation it comes up that my 19-year-old nephew has decided to quit college and go "touring" with his band. If he does this, he will lose the $500/month educational stipend that is part of my sister's death benefits package that she had at work (she passed away in December, 200
.
Sis REALLY wanted him to go to a 4-year college, but she died 6 months before he graduated from HS, and none of us could convince him to give it a try (I took him to look at a couple of colleges) - he had his heart set on attending a local community college. Nothing wrong with that; there was a program there that he was particularly interested in, and he had enough initiative to do all of the paperwork himself.
So I sent off an e-mail to his dad (he and my sister were divorced when nephew was 18 months old), trying to be as tactful as I could be, without being interfering. He's a good guy - he and my sister just weren't compatible - and this is his son, so I don't want to step on any toes.
I guess for some people, there's no teacher like cold, hard experience, and for all I know, the nephew's band could end up being wildly successful. However, I know my sister has got to be s***ing bricks up in Heaven right about now (I would say "rolling over in her grave", but she was cremated.......).
Kids - what are ya gonna do?

Many consider George W. Bush to be a dry drunk, and point to observations of his speeches and other behaviors as evidence of this condition.
I'm not so sure George ever really stopped drinking. Right before he ran for Governor of Texas, at the time he was supposed to have already stopped. I talked to him in a bar in my hometown in West Texas, he was there bird hunting. He was doing a pretty good job knocking drinks down. Maybe it was the whiskey, but he was a very nice guy.

Turkey can simply perpetually tolerate Muslim trade through its territory without an official endorsement. No?
Should Turkey's NATO membership be eliminated, does that necessarily mean that Western Europe wants no part of NATO alliance with the USA, either? European NATO contributions, though meaningful, are yet nominal. Beyond the emotional break-up, had Gates not succeeded in obligating our Air Force to European partnership, there'd be minimal distinction had NATO disbanded.
So is Gates a genius, tying European air power to US development and funding partnership, a fool, or both?

I'd be willing to bet that with the eye condition that Glenn B. has, he is extremely limited in his choice of eyeglass frames that he can pick from - the thicker the glass, the sturdier the frame HAS to be. If not that many people a year need that kind of prescription, there isn't much profit to be made in developing stylish frames for people. Chances are, the type of glass that is necessary to help his condition isn't going to reflect well in the camera lens, no matter what.
My guess is that he is just grateful that technology has advanced to the point that he can even FIND glasses that work - who cares what you look like to the rest of the world, as long as you can see that world?

Heck, all the original television newsmen wore heavy hornrimmed glasses.
Murrow through Cronkite.
Anyway, glasses make you look smarter. That and being brunette.

I meant in terms of how liberals categorize and stereotype the world. I'm not claiming it makes any sense.
I know you know that; I just wanted to make use the sock before the opportunity passed. If anything, you pointed out that the people most likely to scream "racist!" are in fact pretty racist themselves.

Yes, and they shouldn't rely on an immediate resupply such as what Nixon provided during that war.
Israel needs to win every time, and not have any more stalemates like what happened with Lebanon in 2006. The Muzzies only have to get lucky once to eliminate Israel. Which is why the Syrians, Iranians, and Hezbollah are ramping up their missile and WMD programs.

Tea Parties really are effective. Last month, our local patriot group had three speakers from all over the state who detailed the UN's Agenda 21, which has its cadaverous fingers in small-town America, every county and city. The speakers were riveting and our group gave them a lengty standing O. These speakers gave us info to use for the state-wide townhall tour our gov is embarking upon.

Think of Israeli Wars as something similar to the warning you get for stocks, "past performance is no guarantee of future results"
Israel has many many glaring weaknesses. The largest being production and stock piles. Part of the reason the six day war only lasted six days is because Israel was almost out of ammunition. Israel doesn't produce enough ammunition to have a long war. Israel counts on America, Serbia, the Czechs and several other nations for ammunition.
If Turkey comes out of the Iranian side, it will be significantly harder for any european nation to get arms to Israel as they would either have to fly over Turkey or past the turkish navy.
Most people don't know this, but America keeps a massive stockpile of weapons in Israel that are supposedly for our soldiers in the wars we are fighting, but in reality that stockpile is there just in case Israel needs more ammunition(small arms, artillary, bombs, etc).
You're military forces can only be successful if they have the supplies to keep them fighting.

Yes. No one is invincible to attack. Not Israel. Not the US.
But once attacked, great generals unencumbered by politics make the difference.
Given their attack on Israel in 1973, Egypt got the Sinai Peninsula back. And as a result of being successful under extreme international UN pressures, the diplomatic Sadat was assassinated by his own country's Jihadist.
The resulting Israeli disposition to relinquish territories formerly won when attacked in exchange for peace has permeated not only their government, but military as well. Michael Savage critically discusses that, you likely know. But with a US President currently disenfranchising American States to unfriendly and criminal alien nations, what good would Obamarx be to Israel under attack when he is unfriendly towards them during peace?

Posted by: maverick muse at August 13, 2010 07:04 AM (H+LJc)
No. Who even says that the drop-out's family has available finances should they even want to support him later? Tough love occurs out of necessity, whether financially motivated or not, regardless of age, when people refuse during adulthood to mature and accept responsibility.
111 The kid needs to realize that his $500/mo. income is based on NOW being a student, not something that relatives will provide when/if the kid realizes he'd been so foolish to quit school while it was funded. There's always summer touring he could arrange while finishing his degree. Sounds like he needs to study business for survival skills on the road or anywhere as a musician or whatever else to make a living with a life.

maverick, I was in Cairo in 1981 when Sadat was assassinated. We didn't know what was going to happen; army coup, what? The caretaker for the staff quarters I was staying in nailed it with Muslim Brotherhood and told me about their origins and aims. And why Sadat had to die for making peace with the Zionist entity. It was the beginning of my education about Islam.

When the French Marquis in A Tale of Two Cities ran over the peasant' boy with his speeding carriage, he at least flipped the father a coin as compensation. Here in America, our elites make sure you get a ticket when they do the same.
So I am going to put my take on the entire situation--maybe not what actually happened, but a plausible scenario: The driver of the State Department Security Service was transporting some administration political appointee or senior civil servant in the government vehicle in violation of the rules; and after the accident the official had to make very sure that blowback did not touch him. Naturally, he expected it to not be someone with an ability to broadcast his own story. Hence the ticket.
That's one take on the scenario. Here's another--Senatorial holds happen all the time, as well as Congressional letters of inquiry to agencies. The DC police are actually under the jurisdiction of Congressional subcommittees The fact that we seemingly have no heavy-hitting Republican interest in this (after all, it could have been a tourist) confirms me in my belief that portions of the GOP establishment will willingly let outspoken conservatives twist in the wind so as to neutralize a threat they can't control. Support the establishment at your own peril, because too many political and power keeping calculations have entered into their moral calculus.
Finally, if the events are as Mr. Treacher said, then a police department that will take calls from the powerful and issue tickets thereby, sight unseen, is one that exactly matches the fears of standing armies that the Founders had; and is one that should have its police powers curtailed or revoked.
