2 Brought to you this morning via working wifi.

LOL, I was just talking to wifey about that. We are looking at replacing her upstairs office computer and I was going to pull the wi-fi card from the old crapped out machine and put it in the new one. But lo, the new one has PCIe slots and not the old PCI. Will have to come up with different solution.

So question for the morons, has anyone tried the new AC outlet lan plug in units?

11 You know, if we just gave up on the Middle East and went home, they would be back to sitting around in the sand and scratching their fleas while planning the next murderous raid on their neighbors within 25 years. I'm not sure that would be a bad thing. Without oil and money, they would no longer pose a threat to Israel. The fly in the ointment is China and Russia.

If it were me?  I'd hit every military installation they have with a combination of cruise missles, off shore naval bombardment and a few dozen sortiees from the air.

Destroy their military infrastructure as completely as you possibly can, then see what all of the Iranians who hate their own government do once they realize that their government no longer has the military force to keep them enslaved.

Just a thought.

In that situation, the Airborne services -- and the rest of the military -- will get to save his sorry ass along with all other Americans, which they will do. They're like that.

The Washington Post has a full page article on Glenn Beck's 8/28 project. Apparently, that's the anniversary of King's famous speech. Therefore, the Lincoln memorial and the DATE cannot be used by white people because that would be RACIST! Who knew? Beck knew! Because he was TRYING to piss off black people and Sarah Palin knows! It's a conspiracy! (Beck once said that Obama didn't like white people so we know Beck is a racist).

17 Why not attach the wireless router to that computer and then use your old card or the other desktop?

The wireless router is attached to the cable inlet downstairs. Don't have cable in the room where the new computer will go.

What would be ideal is to build a new house with cable AND Cat5E ran all over it to every room but I don't have a spare 300K right now. (Joke)

Seriously have considered moving my old unit upstairs into that room and putting the old card in it but my unit, although old, is a better unit than what we are about to get in the new unit. The new unit will only be used to drive printers and minor word processing so getting a cheapy. (don't have room to move the printers downstairs and no I will never buy another two-story house)

I don't know why Israel would attack Bushehr.  That's the one part of Iran's nuclear program which is monitored and falls under 'civilian' nuclear power.

The two (soon to be) ten enrichment plants are for nuclear weapons.  If Israel is going to stir up Iran, Syria, HAMAS, Hizballah, Muslims generally, and 'progressive' Israel haters globally, they should go ahead and try to decapitate Pasdaran, Basij, and the clerical leadership along with airstrikes on nuclear targets.   Attacking only nuclear sites merely delays the inevitable.

Aug. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Work began on fewer homes than forecast in July and building permits fell to the lowest level in more than a year, indicating little evidence of a rebound in U.S. construction following an expired tax credit.

Builders are struggling to drum up demand following the end of government support for the industry, even with mortgage rates at a record low. Mounting foreclosures are adding to inventory and restraining prices at the same time unemployment close to 10 percent hampers the economic recovery.

“The tax credit brought forward some demand, and now we’re in the middle of the payback,” said Nigel Gault, chief U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts, who forecasted a 545,000 pace for housing starts. “We’re in a deep hole right now. There’s no sign that we’re about to climb out of it.”

This can't be right. We're in the middle of Recovery Summer. The housing starts number, unemployment number and this Nigel Gault must be racists. And it's all Bush's fault

Ok.. but seriously.. a question for you folks knowledgeable about military fire power..

How successful would Israel be using conventional bombs on a nuclear power plant?  What is Israel's capability?  Would these be bombs dropped from aircraft?  Missiles? If missiles, from the gulf?

Posted by: ChiTown Jerry at August 17, 2010 05:49 AM (f9c2L)

32 Vic, if the units you're looking at have specs similar to those of the Netgear XE102G, the LAN speed isn't great, but if all your wife uses the LAN for is internet connectivity, the speed isn't an issue. If she uses a fileserver somewhere on your network, the speed might be an issue.

Sounds good, I am seriously thinking of going that route. In fact, I am thinking of going that route to drive one of the printers as well.

I really like mine.  I also tested the version that runs over coax cable but had to pull them off, apparently my local cable company was getting signal feedback and got pretty testy about it so since then I've just stuck with the AC version.  If I were going to pull coax cable through the walls I could just as easily to real network cable instead, so I don't recommend the coax version for the most part.

Overall the throughput stomps wireless fairly effectively, even wireless N - and since one of the adaptors I have sits out by the TV and pulls movies from over the network that's an important consideration at least for my setup.

Posted by: ChiTown Jerry at August 17, 2010 09:49 AM (f9c2L) You already know the answer to that one. They took out Iraq's Nuke Plant with conventional bombs. But they did it BEFORE the plant was fueled so there was no radiation leakage. So taking out Iran's would not be difficult except it is farther away, probably alot better defended, and also Iran has so many other sites and Israel does NOT have the where with all to contend with all of them at the same time that the USA does. It's a sticky wicket.

Some more notable Obama quotes:

"In America, there's a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world."

"I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance. Let me scratch all that. There's no discussion of nuclear weapons. That's not on the table."

"We're still mired in a tragic and costly war that should never have been waged."

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

"I am not in favor of concealed weapons. I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations."

"For too long now, this can-do spirit has been stifled by a can't-do government that seems to think it has no role in solving great, national challenges or rallying a country to a cause."

"I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of twelve or thirteen, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites."

"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join me as we try to change it."

Vic, I don't think there is anything wrong with having ALL you computers wireless, so you could just use the base station where it is and put a new wireless antenna card (cheap!) in the computer than is being moved.  That's how I run my network, and it works great and lets me put anything anywhere I want - as long as you house is smaller than John Edwards' or Paul Krugman's mind you!  Even if you have dead spots, you can buy booster units to plug the gaps.  Lot less expensive than buying and installing a whole new net technology.

so I'm sure those bark-eating hippies will vote her in.

I'm not 100% sure it will work this time. Despite her schtick that she's brought jobs to Washington, in her tenure we've lost a huge chunk of Boeing to other states as well as some other large companies. Sentiment is against her, even liberals are grumbling.

I think the Democrats are going to have to cheat to win the election. Which they will.

Suddenly I've got two computers that are not working too well and no budget to do anything about it.

One has a CD/DVD drive that only works occasionally if you cold boot and mutter several incantations. My husband is convinced it's a Vista problem, and he may well be right. Kinda acts like a hardware problem, but I just don't know. Since I can't get the drive to work, I can't install the scanner software for the printer combo thing. And I need to scan something while my husband is away with the (good working) laptop!

I can't print from this computer because it doesn't have a wireless network card to talk to the printer in the other room.

So I think that means that it's Vic's fault, right? He brought up the subject...

I've been re-using an old WRT54G Linksys using DD-WRT firmware set up as a bridge, talking through wired ethernet to my desktop. This solved the horrible reception problem in the room. I even use it slaved to an Airport Extreme, with WPA, the whole works.

Zero Hedge is a good site, they have a lot of wall street commenters who know what they are talking about.

While I certainly agree with you regarding financial news, if you read the comments anytime middle east war potential is discussed, you will find positively radical jew haters over there. Some of the comments are just despicable. Case in point: today's post on Bolton re: Israel has 8 days to do something about Iran going nuke.

I attribute this to their disdain for the squid. (Goldman Sachs.) It's still inexcusable.

You may just have a loose plug in, i.e. the optical drive cable is loose. However, the Vista running on my desktop and the printer have a very cantankerous marriage. If you touch, just touch the mouse while the printer is printing it gets huffy and quits. That involves clearing the print spooler and telling the printer that she's a pretty printer. I hate Vista.

I just spent 2 days trying to get my son's security package downloaded from his university. The connection wouldn't go through. After yelling at the university and then berating the indian guy at Verizon, I finally attached the new laptop directly to the modem, skipping the router and it worked. I plan on calling Cisco and yelling at them just on principle.

Wait, BHO is Seattle, i thought he was going to Martha's Vineyard? Did he change his plans or is this "work" between the "mini vacation" and the "vacation"

Yes, he is squeezing this in before he goes on vacation.  He's supposed to be in Seattle around 11 a.m. (I don't know if that's Pacific Time or Obama Time, the man is always late!--another thing I hate about him.  I think that showing up on time is a basic function of being a professional.)  He is doing a fundraiser for the Dwarf in Tennis Shoes and he is doing a "business roundtable" with a bunch of small businessmen.  What a joke.

She's already won her primary, the ballots have to be postmarked today.  (Unless with that top two thing, Rossi and Didier take it--wouldn't that be fun but hugely impossible).  I think he's trying to pad Patty's warchest for the general election.  I don't know why people are still willing to write checks to this man, but they are.  So Patty's bra will be nice and padded with cash before the election in November.   I believe he's meeting with Bill Gates and all those other Democrats with deep pockets and vast money bags.

I'm hoping for that and just need to clean off the desk and take a look.

Meanwhile, suddenly nothing looks quite right on the monitor. It's not the resolution so I don't know what the hell the deal is. And that's on the newest of our computers! Don't get me started on this dinosaur that spit out the new memory I tried to add...

I'm thinking, if I was Israel, I'd wait until the fuel was in place -- destroying the facility won't do enough; the Iranians have other facilities.  Destroy the fuel, then you cause more damage, in a lot of ways (you get a few well chosen swipes at more than just Iran too, and at this point, why not?).  Hell, make it a multiple target strike, but wait until the fuel is in and you are guaranteed some success -- and a bigger event window of opportunity, plus there's every chance that nutjob and the mad mullahs all over the world wouldn't be able to contain themselves...stick their feet in their uullating mouths, pop off and say the impolitic thing -- always good to have in the court of public opinion (and God knows, the Jews need all they can get, as the cards are stacked against them there).
