1 Good morning!

I'm sorry to start crapping on the other thread, but I'm steamed about Althouse's latest volley in the Ewok wars.

3 So, bipartisanship is now defined as when the left and the far-left of the Democrat party reach a compromise? That's like saying Charlie Crist is bisexual because he likes both macho and effeminate men.

Day in court: Mom's attorney says there are 'mitigating circumstances'

Her attorney, Carl B. Grant of Orangeburg, said he has met twice with Duley and learned much about what happened. He declined to share details of their conversation but said "there are mitigating circumstances that will explain all of this."

That has got to be one of the stupidest comments I have heard from a practicing lawyer who was not a politician in a long long time. Even Lord Toranaga would not be able to find a “mitigating circumstance” for killing young children.

They know that "bipartisan" is a four syllable word and therefore has to be "defined" for their base. They have to get the idea out there that republicans are mean and the party of "no" because they won't be "bipartisan" which means agreeing with democrats.

Their "party of no" schtick is dead because people want someone to say "no" to these radicals. It's a compliment not a bug.

9 It is odd watching Althouse kinda trolling on her own site. Not classic trolling, but throwing out strawmen,  getting all personally/emotionally invested in throwaway crap like Star Wars jokes, reflexively playing an "-ism" card, etc.
I dig her site, she just really, really hates it when she's perceived as wrong.

10 The mom is going to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, and the jury will buy it, because jurors don't like to think/believe a mother is sane that can leave her children strapped in a car and then intentionally sink it.

13 because jurors don't like to think/believe a mother is sane that can leave her children strapped in a car and then intentionally sink it.

This one is different. She actually killed them before she put them in the car and sank it.

If the DA and the judge present the jury with the proper instructions they WILL find her guilty because of the fact that she tried to cover up the crime after the fact. That alone shows that she knew what she was doing was wrong and that is the basis for the insanity plea.

Note also that this is multiple murder which in SC qualifies for the death penalty.

The thing that riled me was her speaking on behalf of women this morning when she dispensed advice to men about how to be attractive.

For whatever reason, she's considered to be some sort of authority on women's issues - or is at least an authoritative woman.  So her turning this into a gender war - when it's just that she's an aging, humorless, out-of-touch prig - does damage.

28 At the bottom of Kristol piece (in the Headlines), there's a "go back" link. I was hoping it would restore the 30 seconds I lost while reading his twaddle. No such luck.

What is it that makes the political chattering class so clueless? Left to themselves, they babble like off-their-meds loons; thanks to the interwebz, they quote each other and comment on each others' posts. Which usually are comments on someone else's idea to begin with....

At least it's better than reading the "real" news. Does anyone still believe Osama Obama is not deliberately driving this nation toward collapse?

47 True, the jury could very likely ignore whatever NGRI defense is put up and convict her ass, like they did to that Smith woman in the 1990's. One thing to see is if the prosecution decides to plea out on it. After exhausting himself on saving the whole world and his Recovery Summer tour Barry deserves a vacation:

The Obama family will begin their sixth holiday of the year today, an 11-day sojourn in MarthaÂ’s Vineyard, the island destination of the wealthy and well-connected American elite

Bill Burton, the deputy White House press secretary, said that the US president was “going to spend a little time recharging his batteries” at the Massachusetts island ahead of the November midterm elections.

Yeah, but Vic is referring to his repeated comments over a long period of time.  That's what got ace's goat.

I don't understand this fixation some have to try to make every site where they read and comment one where they can say anything they want all the time.  It's like trying to take your automotive repair discussion board and use it to discuss gardening.  Sure, you have a "right" to talk about marigolds, but not when the moderator wants to talk tires.

I'm sure there are sites on the vast internet where one can vent about race to whatever extent one wants.  Acting like ace is a pussy for not allowing certain views to be posted and behaving as if the entire civilization will come to an end if you can't post certain words on his site is childish.

SEC Sues New Jersey as States' Finances Stir Fears

The Securities and Exchange Commission, in its first securities-fraud case against a state, accused New Jersey of misleading investors about the health of its two largest state pensions while selling billions of dollars in bonds.

One wonders what Chris Christy will do? And why sue the State? Sue the asshole that did the “misleading”.  Martha StewartÂ’s company did not go to jail, she did.

Posted by: Vic at August 19, 2010 09:59 AM (/jbAw)

They settled that case yesterday, Vic. In other NJ news:

TRENTON — A majority of New Jersey voters approve of Gov. Chris Christie's job performance, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released this morning.

Fifty-one percent of voters approve of Christie, while 36 percent disapprove. ThatÂ’s a major jump from the last Quinnipiac poll, taken on June 17, when 44 percent approved and 43 percent disapproved.

i know we aren't allowed to look at history in simplistic terms any more, but will August 18, 2010 be remembered a "VI Day"

That pretty much depends almost entirely on the Iraqi's and their new government.  If they can hold off the murderous vile filth who will kill civilians, women and children (sorry, can't bring myself to call these vermin insurgents like the MSM does) then this will indeed be perhaps one of the greatest victories of our time.

The one thing that should scare them more than anything?  An Iraqi free press.  At the moment most of your rank and file muslims from the middle east are taught that America is evil, ad infinitum.  This is reenforced over and over and over again by what they see on media that is directly controlled by regimes that are unfriendly to say the least.

But if these people can start hearing the truth, in their own language, from their own people?  Then things will really begin to change.  It's going to take time, and a lot still hinges on the ability of Iraq to remain a free and democratic nation, but if they can, the long term results could be dramatic to say the least.

Yeah, that's a funny theory and some great projection.  The lefties can't think for themselves, requiring talking points and community organizers in order to come down on a side.  So they assume conservative popular opinion is shaped the same way.  It never occurs to them that common sense and common courtesy form the basis for a large majority of the public's opinion on the Death Mosque.

You know, I was watching the local news today - in UTAH, Baby! - and there was a story about a tabernacle the LDS wanted to build in Phoenix.  It drew criticism from the community for being too tall.  So the LDS church altered their building plans to make it shorter.  I suppose what they should've done is hire a team of lawyers and pull strings with the Administration to make the community accept the original plan.

I agree, however most people forget that Americans didn't stop dying in Germany after May 8, 1945  or in Japan after August 15, 1945 and neither did germans or Japanese.

Hell the Germans had terrorists groups like the Red Brigade and Bader Meinhoff gang well into the 1970s. Heck, in Japan in 1960 you had a communist politician killed onstage by a right wing katana wielding nut ball on tv.   If you go an look at mircrofilm of American newspapers fromt he second half of 1940s you will see tons of articles asking if the occupation and rebuild is a failure. It wasn't until the mid 1950s that both countries had massive economic expansion.

I think political stability will be the determining factor. If they keep having free and fair(by arab standards) election, then it will be viewed as a success. They clearly don't have the industrial base of know how to turn into a massive economic powerhouse like Germany and Japan did by the 1950s.

I do think August 18th will belong in the same category as May 8, August 15, April 9, and November 11 in american history.

121 Does anybody here get letters to the editor in their newspaper from Marc Perkel of Gilroy, California?

I live in NE PA and this guy started showing up in one of our papers during the 2008 election campaign. Lots of people from out of the area started showing up then but this is the only one who still writes letters. The guy is a lunatic lefty who gets a letter published every week. Funny thing -- the paper has a policy of no more than two letters per month but gives a waiver to hard core leftists. I googled him and found a page from the Clinton years where he boasted that he wrote a letter to the editor every day and blast faxed it to 1,000 newspapers. He said he was published regularly by many papers, gave instructions on how to write a letter (keep it short and to the point) and provided example letters to cut and paste your own stuff into.

About two months ago he wrote a mocking, triumphalist letter claiming Republicans would suffer huge losses this November, perpetually becoming a party with the same political clout as the Libertarians.

Our local rag ran a new letter from him today and he's now singing a different tune:

-------
With poll numbers falling people are asking what Democrats should do now to win the mid-term elections this fall. What message should Democrats use to bring the attention of the voters back to remembering the Bush Era and how we got in this economic crisis in the first place.

If I were the Democrats what I would do is buy 15 minutes of time on the major networks a few days before the election and I would play Bush's full economic crisis speech of Sept. 24, 2008. I think once the voters hear that again, and the talking heads on cable start discussing it, then the election will be about whether America should continue the long hard path to recovery, or should we go back to the Bush era and make the problem worse. Elections have consequences and if we make the wrong choice then we have to pay the price.

-------

I love the smell of left wing fear in the morning.

It is quite scary when you use the term "Most of the country". What you are inching towards is majority rule. If you are looking for majority rule, you probably don't want to live in the United States of America because we are a Republic, not a democracy.

Eighteen months ago their attitude was that %52 percent is a majority and we bitter clingers should just accept that that's what happens in a democracy.  Now that nearly 70% think that the location of the mosque is at least in bad taste, we suddenly live in a republic and the rule of the majority is something to be concerned about.   Go figure.

Pamela Geller posted at LGF until the 2007 counterjihad meeting in Brussels flap.  This is when Charles had his weird psychotic break and started seeing Nazis behind every bush, but not including antisemitic socialists on the Left.  He thinks Pam Geller is the first Yenta Einsatzgruppen member.

Pam has posted some controversial and downright wacky stuff.  But a lot of the rest is stuff the MSM buries as a matter of policy and string-pulling.  So she gets a lot of scoops as well.  After leaving LGF Pam was attacked mercilessly by Charles and to this day.

Obviously she's recently gained a lot of influence and notoriety with Spencer for the book, bus ads, Rifqa Bary, mosque protest, and SIOA.

I worry the American media is trying to do 'for' Pam what the Dutch media did for Pim Fortuyn.   The MFM slavishly reports all criticism of Islam as some nefarious plot against Islam, per their Muslim Brotherhood instructions, I always note.

I've started talking a bit with some of the folks around here (all LDS) about politics and Romney's name has not come up once.

I think it's just part of the Church's attempt to reach out (and get new members, of course).  For example, we learned that BYU has a (I believe relatively new) policy of limiting the number of students they accept from Utah (the number I heard was ~10%) and are really trying to further increase their international student population.  All part of spreading the word, I believe.

Thus far, I really have not detected a big pro-Romney sentiment here.

Very true, but of course back then we had a press corps that didn't delight in undermining any military effort like we do today.  I really wish we could have stuck it out in Iraq until their own government was in a good position to take the lead like we did in both Germany and Japan.

Sadly though our new socialist leaders are far to short sighted to ever take five minutes to pick up a history book to find out what works and what doesn't - and far more interested in picking our pockets, stealing our hard earned labors and redistributing it to their political supporters than they are in actually making the world a better, safer place for everyone.

I think political stability will be the determining factor. If they keep having free and fair(by arab standards) election, then it will be viewed as a success. They clearly don't have the industrial base of know how to turn into a massive economic powerhouse like Germany and Japan did by the 1950s.

Agreed.  But of course a lot of the industrial base in both countries was rebuilt by us after WWII, giving them better and more modern factories and thus a real leg up on the competition.

Hopefully the same will hold true of Iraq and it's oil industry, thanks to the evil corporate cabal known as Haliburton.  Sadly at this point only time will tell, and if the new Iraqi government doesn't hold up it won't be the failure of our brave men and women in uniform.

It will be the result of a cowardly CIC.  Sad, but true.

Essentially this means that the sites will go unmarked as there isn't an easily recognizable alternative.  My guess is that this falls into the "feature  not a bug" category on the left since as fond as they are of police states the death of individual troopers is of no interest at all.

147 is there a wave of anti mormonism that the church is trying to quell, or something else going on?

Yes, there is.  Between the No H8ers and the Huckabites, I think there is an anti-Mormon trend.  I don't *think* it's major, but it's kind of there.

But mostly I think they are just trying to get people to feel comfortable with their religion which ultimately would help it expand.  I can't say I blame them for that.  That's pretty much how organized religions work, except perhaps for Judaism which never seems to be trying to recruit new members.

It is interesting though, how we perceive things depending on our frame of reference.  One of my favorite movies is Fletch, much of which is set in Utah.  Anyway, we stumbled across a site - not an official church site, mind you - where someone was picking it apart and finding lots of anti-LDS sentiment.  Stuff I didn't see and that, frankly, I don't think was intended.

I always liked Geller's meet with Cindy Sheehan. Her finger got a serious workout.

If anyone cares, it looks like the new Journolist target is Pamela Geller.  WaPo has big takedown of her and Robert Spencer today.  Apparently the lefties are pushing the meme that Geller singlehandedly ginned up this phony outrage over the GZ Mosque as a publicity stunt and to further her outrageously outrageous Islamophobia and sell her book.

The MFM is seriously pissed off over the GZM flap but I don't think it's the only reason they're attacking Geller.

Notice the new "Obama is a Muslim" controversy? Pam also wrote:

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said he had a one-on-one meeting with Obama, in which President Obama told him that he was still a Muslim, the son of a Muslim father, the stepson of Muslim stepfather, that his half brothers in Kenya are Muslims, and that he was sympathetic towards the Muslim agenda.

So I think the MFM has more than one reason to go after her.

152 I could care less whether Imam Obama is still a practicing Muslim, but I love just dropping it casually amongst my more liberal friends. They immediately go with the, "Stop trying to fear-monger" line.

I just calmly state, well, in Islam if your father is a Muslim, you're a Muslim (much like if your mom's Jewish, you're Jewish, they get this one as many of my NY liberal friends are Jews). Obama's father was a Muslim, his step-father was a Muslim, he was raised in the world's must populous Islamic nation and attended public school there, which in an Islamic nation is basically the Muslim equivalent of Catholic school.

They get it, but they'd always just brush it off. After the Ground Zero Victory Mosque flap, my seeds have begun to sprout...

154 136 I don't think Blazer was permanently banned. He was banned from one night of the ONT because of relentless drunken attacks on some of the moronettes.

He was back the next day and apologizing.

Umm, no - he did that first, but then later in a subsequent drunken attack, he questioned the motives of Ace and the cobloggers, and they weren't polite questions either.
