1 Good morning,  Gabe!

Unemployment numbers up to 479,000 this week.   officials had expected a small drop to 455,000.

So I assume this increase was,  of course,  unexpected.

2 Unemployment claims unexpectedly rise. Again, and again, and again.

Gabe, you will really appreciate this.  I got one of my usual e-mail updates from The Freeman, and there was a link to this article from 2007 which discusses the evolution of the family unit and how capitalism has had a huge hand in it, up to and including gay marriage.

It actually makes a very compelling case, and I daresay this one article has started to change the way that I (the parent of a gay daughter) view gay marriage.  I hope it helps......

7 Welcome to the great consumerless, unemployed, recovery. Where people buy cars with unemployment checks.

Where Pimco's fund manager calls stocks a "safe bet."

Outflows on mutual funds are approaching 50 billion over the last twelve weeks. All those fingers plugging all those holes. Pretty soon, the whole fucking dam is gonna give way. You might want to be upstream right about then.

Likewise, except it was my grandfather, who created my father after the war.

I've heard the story of his trip home a couple hundred times (he only talks about radio school, coming home, and funny things that happened in the mess)--they packed troop ships with three times as many guys as berths and fed them one tiny meal a day until they got to Hawaii.  In other words...he got treated worse than we currently treat convicted terrorists.

Bitburg is an SS Cemetary and some people thought Reagan should have been seen honoring SS dead.

bitburg isn't an SS Cemetary. It is a German military cemetary of over 2000 people, which happened to have 22 SS soldiers burried.

You don't think there were Kempeitai in Hiroshima or Nagasaki? or Japnese soldiers there?

Also, keep the context in mind, Reagan went their at Helmut Kohl's request. Reagan did so because he owed Kohl. Kohl was allowing the deployment of Pershing IIs in germany even though just about the entire country was against it.

from yahoo:  "Recent economic data has heightened concerns that the recovery is slowing. Americans are spending cautiously as they save more and pay down debt. Home sales and construction have slumped after a popular homebuyers' tax credit expired on April 30. The impact of the federal government's stimulus efforts is fading."

Posted by: curious at August 05, 2010 06:11 AM (p302b)

49

President Obama and congressional Democrats -- out of options for another quick shot of stimulus spending to revive the sluggish economy -- are shifting toward a longer-term strategy that promises to tackle persistently high unemployment by engineering a renaissance in American manufacturing.

That approach, heralded by Obama last week in Detroit and sketched out in a memo to House Democrats as they headed home for the August break, is still evolving and so far focuses primarily on raising taxes on multinational corporations that Democrats accuse of shipping jobs overseas.

Genius! Pure genius. That ought to get the economy rolling along and create or save a trillion new jobs

51 Too bad we can't send a wing of B-29s over Hiroshima today. You know, just to remind our postwar BFFs (and ourselves) that we used to know how do deal with brutal sneak attacks and those who gleefully committed atrocities.

Today, our way of dealing with another group that unleashed a brutal sneak attack on us and gleefully commits atrocities is to let them build a victory shrine to their savage "religion" on the site of their biggest sneak attack.

I like the old days, when we were intolerant of our enemies.

Thanks, Osama Obama (and, to a lesser extent, Bush II, Clinton and Bush I), for turning us into a nation of puling cowards.

This is a serious scandal:

http://tinyurl.com/2vurtqp

Why?  Because it is a Republican candidate talking about it.  It also qualifies that candidate as a looney nutjob whose very name on the ballot borders on criminally negligent behavior.

Of course when Granny Botox Pelosi tripped all over herself calling on "The Word" as a basis for the support she gives to everything from soaking the rich to supporting abortion, the media gave her a complete pass.

Last I checked, there were a lot of people in this country who still leaned on their religious as the foundation of their convictions.

Evidently, the media would have us believe that if a Republican makes that linkage, they're off the reservation.  On the otherhand, if a Democrat does the same thing, we are to believe that all is good because they are only doing what they have to; paying lip service to religion in order to con the idiot believers so they can get elected.

so then the "forgiveness" would be used as the excuse to keep them going?

85 Somehow the babble has to be deflated.  But that would mean pain for everyone.   This might not accomplish much since the more I read about the real estate market the more I learn that the banks are unwilling to let property go under a certain price and they can just hang onto it.  And, most authors say there is "still more pain", translation, "your property value still has another leg down, at least"

86 Vic, the chatter is starting to discuss this person:  "Blythe Sally Jess Masters (born Oxford, England, 22 March 1969) is an economist and current head of global commodities at JP Morgan Chase, and led the development of so-called Credit Default Swaps (CDS's) widely used by financial institutions.

88 This had better just be a damn rumor. Every renter in America would BE PISSED OFF!

Why just renters?

What about the vast majority of homeowners who simply lived within their means?

Or, how about buyers waiting for the final approvals on a short sale?

Or, how about anyone who lost a house to foreclosure?

If they announce this, when congress is back early, they will turn around the election casue all of those people will then say "see I told you he was going to pay my mortgage and you didn't believe me".   I guess their moral compass dictates that if you made it this long you should keep your house?  Their logic is always flawed so I'm not sure why, if they were going to do this, it wasn't done from day 1 and more people would have been able to keep their homes.

90 so then the "forgiveness" would be used as the excuse to keep them going?

Probably. Ace has a new thread up on this issue BTW.

91 We nuked 100k civilians in Japan. Showing a little decency 65 years later is not a big deal. Really. In fact, many Japanese are embarrassed about the events of Pearl Harbor. They own what happened to them at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Have you ever heard them whine?

I have always found the Japanese to be respectful, responsible, honorable.

Therein lies the sad truth. That real people always pay the price for the mistakes of their governments. Transition here...

I think this is not a country for old men. That by the time you acquire the wisdom of 50 years, nobody wants to hear it. It does not suit the following generations' emotional needs. Heaven forbid, that you actually question whether Japanese concentration camps were really necessary or whether nuking 100k civilians was over kill. We don't really like scrutinizing our own potential mistakes and that's too bad. Because applying rigorous honesty to ourselves and to our own actions...well that is the fountain from which wisdom flows. This from a guy who carried the governments' marching orders for 25 years. Flag and all.

It's just a shame it takes so long to get it.

41) Sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope that the curtain being pulled back on this degenerate behavior and the resulting public display of mental illness  help her and many others reconsider their damaging choices.
It's got to be tough. At least with drugs and alcohol you have rehab.         Posted by: jtellis at August 05, 2010 09:59 AM (VXI3I)

EXCUSE me?  Who the hell do you think you are?  I happen to love my daughter VERY much.  I may not be comfortable with the fact that she is gay, but she has ALWAYS been that way.

She is in NO way degenerate, she is not mentally ill, and she has not made any "damaging" choices as a result of who she is.  There is no "rehab" for this, and suggesting that there is implies that she is somehow destructive to herself and/or others.

Nothing could be farther from the truth - she is a well-adjusted young woman.  As much as it may surprise you, she also happens to be very Conservative.  She has never gotten in anyone's face, telling them that they have to accept her.  She has very quietly stood up to those who would seek to harm her.  She has never told anyone that perhaps they, themselves are gay - she recognizes that no one is going to become gay who isn't inherently that way.

As a matter of fact, she has become someone that other kids turn to who are trying to come to grips with how to approach friends and family.  Many of these kids can't "come out" to their families, but they know that they can talk to her and she will be willing to listen.  And if they come to her and it is obvious that they aren't truly gay, she will tell them that, too.

So please don't judge my daughter for being herself.  And don't you dare EVER say anything to me about my beloved child being degenerate or mentally ill.

Good job.
