From Jay Leno last night.

LENO: He is 49, which is eight points higher than his approval rating. Wow.

LENO: If you would like to get him a a gift, he's registered at Bed, Bath and Blame it on Bush. That's the store.

LENO: What, did you see the cake they had for him? They had a huge cake. A little different than most birthday parties. What he did was he didn't blow out the candles, he just taxed them until they finally gave up and went out on their own.

5 I was going to comment on how disgusted I am about the government sending our ambassador to be insulted, lectured and belittled at the annual anti-American "memorial service" for the 65th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima today, but George Smiley said it much better than I ever could:

" ...it won't deter the White House or Mrs. Clinton's crew a Foggy Bottom. They view the atomic bombing of the Japanese cities as a wrong that must be corrected, to enhance America's standing in the world. Harry Truman never saw any need for that; he understood that war is a terrible business that sometimes requires leaders to make the most difficult decisions. From what we've read, Mr. Truman had no regrets over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and felt no need to apologize for ending a war that Japan started."

Read the whole thing - as they say...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Employment fell for a second straight month in July as more temporary census jobs ended while private hiring rose less than expected, pointing to an anemic economic recovery.

Non-farm payrolls fell 131,000 the Labor Department said on Friday as temporary jobs to conduct the decennial census dropped by 143,000.

Private employment, considered a better gauge of labor market health, rose 71,000 after increasing 31,000 in June. In addition, the government revised payrolls for May and June to show 97,000 fewer jobs than previously reported.

Ya'll know how hot in gets in the August afternoon down here in SC right? Normal temperatures around 3:30 range between 90° and 100°.

So if you are a young mother, how do you "forget" that you have left an infant in the car with all the windows rolled up?

One of the fluffly morning news shows did a segment on this in the beginning of the summer.  The "expert" actually said that you have to pin a giant flower to yourself to remind yourself that you have a child with you.  She said when you look down and see the flower, you will remember you have the child, guys too"......we all laughed and then my friends said "well I guess there are a lot of people out there who just aren't functioning at the levels our parents functioned at" and we just all got quiet.

that's always been a tough revisionist question, because there is no guarantee that they would have been as peaceful  or surrendered without him in power.

Also the same can be said about the Soviet Union, but was the risk of humiliation and potentially destabilizing a fragile nation with a ton of nukes at a time of transition from oligarchic dictatorship to democracy  worth it?

The atomic bombs allowed them to play the victim, but neglects the minor details like the fact they started the pacific war in 1937, they invaded some 10 countries in the pacific, and are responsible for at least 17 million asian deaths.

58 Morning all.  Just a little 'on this day' trivia.....

On this day in 1965, the 1965 Voting Rights Act was signed into law.  Contrary to myth, Republicans supported this law much more than did the Democrats.  In the Senate, 94% of Republicans voted in favor, while just 73% of Democrats voted for it.  In the U.S. House of Representatives, 82% of Republicans voted in favor, compared to 78% for the Democrats.

Posted by: steevy at August 06, 2010 09:34 AM (iZnPW)

It's pretty fascinating to read the text of the radio message that Hirohito gave ordering a secession of hostilities.  Much is made about how the general staff went to great lengths to prevent it's broadcast, but if you actually read it (I had a link but lost the d#mn thing) the word "surrender" is never used, rather Hirohito tells the people that he can no longer ask them to continue to fight against an enemy that would be so "dishonorable" as to use a weapon as "cowardly" as the atomic bomb.

In short he told the Japanese that they could stop fighting because they had won by forcing the Americans to lose their honor and fight in a "cowardly" fashion.

That is something else that the left will never understand about the atomic bombs- they not only saved more lives than they took, but they also allowed the Japanese to do something they would not otherwise have been able to do- surrender with their "honor" intact.

think you are sort of missing the boat with your Soviet Union analogy.  We did not need to do anything but stand out of the way of that transition.  Why would we need to punish the oppressed people who had just overthrown their oppressors?

For one, they were never forced to make terrirorial concessions after their collapse. Why in the hell were they allowed to keep Kalingrad or the parts of Poland they took in 1939?

Second, the collapse of the Soviet Union wasn't about the Russian people overthrowing their oppresors, it was simply the collapse of the ruling elite and their economic and political ideology. It wasn't riots, mutiny, and a civil war between the forces of democracy and the forces of opression that ended the soviet union, in the way that the Romanov Russia was ended, it was simply a collapse fromt he top down. The rulers couldn't maintain the charade., couldn't pay for the guns and butter, and  most importantly, couldn't keep the lumpenproles in line through the threat of mass executions anymore.

In 1937-1945 many thing happened.

Chapter 11

 In the 1950s, ...

was that from an episode of the simpsons or something.

i seem to remember a scene where someone is on the top of a double decker bus in germany and the tour guide says something like, " and in the 1930s and 1940s some stuff happened".

88 For one, they were never forced to make terrirorial concessions after their collapse. Why in the hell were they allowed to keep Kalingrad or the parts of Poland they took in 1939?

Ben,

First of all, Kaliningrad used to be East Prussia, and the Russians claimed it in 1945, not 1939.

Second, if Poland takes back territory from the Russians, do the Germans than have cause to reclaim their territory that was awarded to Poland as compensation?

I think people are under way too much pressure.  Even when they go out socially there is pressure.   Even when you go on vacation you end up calling your office more than once.   Remember years ago my dad took us on vacation and he didn't call in.  When he got back everyone was yelling at him for not calling.  This was before blackberry's and the like.  My grandpa could take two weeks and not even think about the office once.  This is not good.

After much consideration, I have concluded that Obama should hire a 7-year-old as an economic adviser.

Not only would said kid be able to point out the massive flaws in most of the plans that are currently sailing past and into implementation, but it would also probably improve the maturity level, too.

My five year old is pissed that you don't realize he could also do a better job.

I didn't say they took Konigsberg in 1939, i said  the land they took from Poland in 1939.

And no the Germans do not. The Germans gave that land to Poland as compensation for starting the war and invasion. The Russians, if i recall, also started the war and invaded Poland, so they should give back the land as compensation as well.

Vic, those stories burn me up (no pun intended).

We had two incidents of that happening two summers ago. Unfortunately both toddlers died.

In both instances they were working Mothers were on the go, go, go. One was even a VP of a school. She's seen on camera brining in donuts and other items from her van. I think she even made two different trips. Completely forget the sleeping baby in the back. She *thought* she had dropped her off at day care. That child sat in the car for nearly eight hours in the August heat. This was the second case of it happening and people were outraged she wasn't charged with neglect.

Posted by: laceyunderalls at August 06, 2010 06:03 AM (pLTLS)

104 85-the doors were locked, and the kids were obviously taught to "not talk to strangers." Otherwise, I would have marched those kids to the office and waited with them to see their parents, and ask them why they did such a thing. Good for the passerby who helped that baby-it could have been dead by the time mom finished her errands. At least these kids were older, and in an air conditioned car. Still no excuse, but they weren't in "obvious" danger. My older teens often want to stay in the car, but at least they know how to turn it off, hit the panic button is something goes wrong. I think that we have an ADD society today, with so much going on, that simple things, like your child, are easy to forget in the rush to "get stuff done." Am I wrong to be nostalgic for a simpler way of life?

Part of it is because of airbags. Don't want a short person sitting in front being hit in the face by them.

Seat belts are meant to fit people 4' 9" and taller. I don't actually know how bad a job they do for kids who are shorter than that.

Hey!  This is the new America. You could get arrested for even thinking such things.  Your children are the state's (and everyone else's) responsibility, not yours.

And don't even think of smoking.  The government assures us that all smokers die before age 35 and their second-hand smoke kills hundreds of millions around them.  35 billion people a year are killed by second-hand smoke.  It's so dangerous that private property rights have been suspended in order to battle the killer cigarette ...

Today's public service announcement: sometimes cars lock themselves. Twice I have been in a parking lot where a parent got the kids in, started the car, buckled up the car seats, closed the door and then couldn't open their own door.

The kids were too young to undo their buckles, so the police and fire dept. had to be called and each time it took 15-20 minutes for them to break in.

Kind of a pain. I learned to leave a door open a bit or roll down a window part way if it was hot or cold enough that I wanted to get the car started right away.

126 115- oddly, the Poles have less animosity towards the Germans than they do the Russians. I met a survivor of the Warsaw Uprising, who said he forgave the Germans, but not the Russians, who he believed took advantage of the end of WWII to make land grabs, knowing that FDR/Truman wouldn't stop them. He mentioned that the Russian forces were in the area of Auschwitz months before the Allied forces, knew what was happening, and let it happen. TONS of animosity towards the Russkies in Poland.

112 Well that's true, but part of me thinks she should have served some time. I mean this was the second of these unfathomable instances in two years.

At some point I think you need to make an example of people. And to be fair, it did spark some racial problems as well. Both women were white and from middle-to-upper class. (This was coming off another story of a women who had her childlren removed from the home when she literally handcuffed her children to the radiator. They were getting in the food stash because they were hungry (welfare recip. of course). She thought that would be the only way to keep them out of the pantry.

It's hard to explain the element of intent to people that want to see things through a racial lens. I think they may have re-written the law after those horrible situations.

Oh and happy birthday, Mama AJ!

War is a terrible thing. Sorry for the abnormally long postÂ…I usually try to keep it pithy.  You know, I had a bad feeling all day about flying out, and should have been more in touch with my intuition.

Dear White House,

HereÂ’s how Barack Obama affected my job search:  I was scheduled to fly home to Chicago last night out of Norfolk, VA, as I was supposed to be interviewing for a job this morning.  I also have family and friends there who periodically like to see me (no accounting for taste).   IÂ’m currently on a tour with the Air Force as a full-time reservist as a replacement for 4 officers whoÂ’ve been deployed to Afghanistan, but in the interest of balancing the budget my tour is coming to an end in September.

I fed little Chairman Meow and Precious J. Pussycat III with 2 days worth of kibble and arrived at the airport 2 hours early, per TSA directives, and proceeded to my gate.  I was concerned about a line of severe thunderstorms headed our way and hoped we would depart before they reached Norfolk.  At the gate were many hot and sweaty passengers whoÂ’d been diverted, and many who were waiting to board the flight to Chicago.  We waited, and waited again.  No word from either of the two people in the airport who represent United.  I met an apparently well-connected gentlemen who saw me in uniform (easy to travel in, lots of pockets), and  told me that the reason we were delayed was airspace issues in Chicago, namely Air Force Won, which hadnÂ’t taken off as of 1800 as the President was raising necessary campaign funds.   Thanks for making sure the Republicans donÂ’t gain seats in November!

We finally heard from the airline that the rescheduled departure would be at 8:30 or 8:45 (or sometime thereabouts).  Alas, it was too lateÂ…the thunderstorms were here, and our small plane would be no match for microbursts, so United regrettably cancelled the flight.  Needless to say after airspace restrictions for several hours, one of the worldÂ’s busiest airports would probably be a tad backed up headed in.   Being tourist season around here, finding a later flight today was impossible.  At least I could go back home and sleep in my own bed.  As for the other 80 people who couldnÂ’t connect or couldnÂ’t get rerouted and would be sleeping at the airport, IÂ’m not so sure how their evening turned out.  And if IÂ’m lucky, I may get to interview sometime in 2011.

IÂ’ve enclosed a receipt from Wolfgang Puck for a crappy sandwich.  If Mr President Obama has any money left over from his fundraising trip, IÂ’d appreciate reimbursement.

My kid is leaving for S. Korea in a couple of weeks to do "security", whatever that means.  What's life like there for the military?  Just curious.

I'm going to see someone tonight who just came in from Osan AFB. I probably won't have a lot of time to talk to her, but I'll try to get in a question or two.

159 Kid is a Marine, so I don't know where he'll be based yet.  He'll leave there and go to California, Hawaii, and then home around Christmas for pre-deployment leave before he leaves for the Sand Pit in January.  Sigh.

Where in the hell did you find that little bit of misinformation about second hand smoke?  The second-hand smoke Nazi web site?

There has never been ANY credible evidence that second hand cigarette smoke does anything other than stink.

The original case brought by the EPA was actually thrown out of court for multiple violations of its own rules for using statistical data.  They kept using it anyway.

165 Mexico City, Mexico, Aug 5, 2010 / 05:56 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Despite heavy opposition from various organizations defending traditional marriage, Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled Thursday that same-sex “marriage” in the country's capital city is constitutional.

According to the Associated Press, the court's justices acknowledged that while the constitution protects the family, it does not define what a "family" is.

The 8-2 vote went against an appeal by Mexico's attorney general challenging the constitutionality of the city's law allowing gay “marriage.” The law went into effect on March 4 of this year.

Next Monday the court will debate whether the law applies to the rest of the country and whether it includes the right to adoption.

And for the people who were saying they picked up something off MM/Hot Air who may not be technically inclined:

When your computer is booting up, hit F8 a few times until you get the windows boot menu. Select Safe Mode with Networking. Go download malwarebytes and run it, that should clear up anything nasty you picked up. To keep stuff off in the future use Firefox instead of IE and install the ad-block plus and no-script addons for Firefox.

181 33 The Japanese have never apologized for anything they did before or during WW2,to my knowledge.

I think they did do some kind of apology for the "comfort women" thing in Korea.

No, they did not.  Prime Minister Abe apologized for the "situation they found themselves in" .... the non-apology crap the comfort women have been given for the last 15+ years.  And it wasn't just Asian women.  My Dutch aunt was one of the sexual slaves ('comfort women' is too much of a euphemism - call it what it is). Even the short version of what she had to go through is horrific. http://www.internationalrelations.house.gov/110/ohe021507.htm

182 180. (carsick child; visual focus) That's true, so I sometimes put her in the middle, which helps a little bit (not entirely). BUT that's not the safest seat back there. From personal experience (carsick my whole life) the ONLY way I can go anywhere by car without getting really sick is to sit in the front seat. When I was a kid, this was not a problem. She's tall enough to see fine, it's really being in the back. Same with me.

Happy Birthday Mama.

No, we should definitely not be apologizing at Hiroshima -- the Japanese really do see themselves as victims, because, well, have you seen their textbooks?  Yeah, we're not the only ones who delve in revisionism (but ours try to tar and feather us, while everyone else -- except maybe the Germans -- tries to whitewash theirs).

As for the baby in the car -- very sad.  We had a couple of cases here where some people left their toddlers and infants in the car; it was near the same lake even(more than one kid each time, unfortunately).  In one instance the mother was indeed, wilfully negligent; the other case...the parents and grandparents were just really that fucking stupid.  Either way -- poor babies...

189 I am not aware of all the context or details, but apparently Charles Rangel has said he has rejected a plea bargain in regards to his ethics problems, criticizing it as "English, Anglo-Saxon" law. I think I understand what he is trying to get at, and what he is trying to do. In the long run it will not work, but much damage can be done. Of course, he is being "tried" not in a court of law, but by a Congressional process.

Having said, that, I invite Mr. Rangel to propose that Congress, for ethics trials, should use an alternate legal system he feels he would be better served by ("more fair, more just"). For examples, I give:

1. The original Napoleonic Code, where there was a de facto presumption of guilt and a heavy favoring of the prosecution.

2. Medieval trial by combat.

3. China, where those seen as corrupt are killed (with perhaps the family charged for the bullet) in order to maintain the legitimacy of the regime.

4. Saddam's Iraq (Wood-chippers. Not just a yard tool...)

5. Ancient Athens--trial by demogoguery, where any speaker could woo a crowd into a rush of judgment.

6. The justice of tribal Africa, which sold his ancestors into slavery.

My guess is that Mr. Rangel would very much like #5. May those days never come.

Mr. Rangel may feel that the plea bargain is used much like the Napoleonic Code--the state using the weight of force to get what it wants--and this may resonate in the community he is trying to rally behind him. But at the end of the day we must have a system of justice that says there is a right and wrong, however imperfect that system may be. We have a good one--and it is one of English, Anglo-Saxon heritage, and it should be celebrated. I'm sorry Mr. Rangel is in trouble. But it seems to be of his own doing, and if it is the fault of the system, it is because it has allowed behavior such as he is being charged with to go unremarked upon for far too long, to the detriment upon us all.

Charles Rangel is no saint, and he is not being martyred. He is being given--in accord with that Anglo-Saxon legal tradition he now disparages--a full chance to clear his name, the state having gone through sufficient safe-guards to make sure the charges were not frivolous in nature. If he chooses to take that chance, and wins, he is--from a Congressional point of view--free and clear. If not, he pays a price. He is under no obligation to take a plea bargain.

I understand he may think the offer of a plea bargain is really a coercive method to make him plead guilty or else suffer a far more ruinous fate than the situation would otherwise warrant. And to the extent that this is done in normal trials, I agree.

But in this case I reject that point of view. Because you see, you really can't expel a member multiple times, even if their are multiple crimes worthy of such. If I were one of those deciding this issue the matter of a plea bargain would never even been considered--I would have demanded the full trial on all relevant and worthy charges.

Therefore, I welcome Mr. Rangel's defense, and the trial. I'm sure, regardless of the verdict, the entire process will be instructive on many levels.
