The shoe is now on the other foot. It may not be the path of least resistance you wanted, but the candidate is now set. Like Ed says, "Grow up, shut up, and get to work." O'Donnell is the candidate in Delaware. Stop acting like petulant children and get busy doing the moving of heaven and earth needed to win!
Oh, and the Delaware party apparatchiks can go screaming to fry in Hell.

Yeah, still kinda deaf over here too. You're right...our veterinarian seems more trustworthy in surgery than a lot of doctors as well

It appears that the official leaders of the Republican party can't see beyond the end of their noses. The Tea Party leaning members of the public want to swing government back from the ditch on the left side of the road where Obama & the Dems have taken it. The Republicans in charge have no interest in swinging the government to the right, they're telling the public that we can just ease up on the gas but stay in the lefty ditch.
The voting public has no use for these establishment Republicans, and certainly Obama has no use for them. They might soon find themselves under that bus!

Posted by: Lemon Kitten at September 15, 2010 05:38 AM (0fzsA)
Heh. I wrote yesterday that they would do this. It's hilarious and tragic that after spending weeks lambasting those who disagree as RINOs and traitors, particularly the NRSC, the O'Donnell folks can sit there with a straight face and expect the RINOs and traitors to spend time and money on her campaign. You wanted an insurgency. Congratulations.
Fact: polls have O'Donnell 11 points behind. The GOP has closer Senate races in NV, WA, WI, CA, IL, WV, and CT and limited funds. We should be spending those funds on the closer Senate races that we're more likely to win. If the first round of post-primary polls shows O'Donnell in a better position than that then we can re-compute.
But it's pretty fuckin' precious that folks who vow to dismantle the "GOP establishment" are now all butt-hurt that the "establishment" won't pay for the privilege. GTFOOH, you must be joking.
My hope is that the GOP tsunami is so great that the Delaware race won't matter for retaking the Senate.

It was pointed at the sorts of 'RINO or nothing' attitudes I was seeing in the posts regarding Delaware leading up to this. You read them same as I did; that's not imagined.
And of course, it's aimed at Establishment scum everywhere. Not that they read this, but who knows.
Your tone is interesting. Touch a guilty nerve? If not, well, sorry, but I don't really feel terribly charitable after getting clobbered over the head with 'hold your nose and support the RINO' so often. (And I've gone to bat on this position. What gets me is folks who take their ball and go home when the non-RINO wins, whining about 'electability' the whole way while stabbing the nominee of their claimed party in the back with non-support.)
If that isn't you, the post isn't aimed at you. Feel free to go about your business and ignore it was ever written. Otherwise, well...

In my newly acquired capacity as foreign policy expert (self bestowed), my opinion, excuse me, expert opinion is that this won't, but it should, put the Middle East peace process in stark relief:
Turkey continues to turn Islamist. Lebanon will shortly be forced to subjugate itself to complete Syrian control. Egypt's Mubarak is nearing the end of his sojourn on earth and Egypt will likely become islamized. (They've been producing hundreds of M1A1 tanks under license for years. This would be a phenomenal prize for the islamists.)
If the peace process experiences any degree of success, that will in truth put Israel just another giant step closer to potential destruction.
There you have it. Another expert analysis from your humble expert on an every growing number of scientific and complex policy fields.
You're welcome.

As Gabe pointed out above, you can't have it both ways. You got your anti-establishment candidate -- just don't expect the establishment to run around sucking your cocks in glee.
I am no fan of the republican party, especially its entrenched dinosaurs. But the cold, rational calculus is that O'Donnell is probably not going to win, so why spend the money?
If O'Donnell was a more impressive, accomplished person I would be much happier about last night's outcome. As is, she is a marginal candidate with some baggage. If she wins? Great! Just don't expect lots of support from the people you have been lambasting for the last three months. And, by the way, I'll probably toss her a few bucks, because a dipshit republican is better than a dipshit democrat.

The more desperate democrats get, the trickier they become.
But does this translate to electoral success? Are we in more danger of losing to desperate, tricky Democrats than confident, cool-headed ones?
I doubt it.

This is an absolutely legitimate position (one I happen to agree with). But don't stand there and stamp your foot that the NRSC, which represents the establishment, has decided to sit out in Delaware, which is running a candidate who feels the same way and which is a long shot now. That's just insane.

Kemp, I think one of the great things about this recent primary, indeed this entire primary season, is that it has brought clarity to the situation in which the Republican party currently finds itself. This fight has been a long time coming.

This isn't glee you're seeing. It's disgust at the double standard of 'have to support the RINO' but 'she's too hard to elect, so I won't help'. If you can't tell the difference, that's an issue I can't do anything about.

Well said, Gabe.
The objections to O'Donnell are largely on character and record, not ideological. Someone can parrot all the conservative things they want (although it's beyond nutty for a candidate to speak out about masturbation), but if the life she's lead includes shady finances and outrageous lawsuits, well, bye-bye. If I were in DE I would be pretty pissed that my choices were a liberal long-in-the-tooth career politician and a fruit-bat.

Karl Rove's a smart guy and has run successful campaigns in the past, but he's been in DC too long to know what's really bubbling up out here in flyover country. Rove was 110% behind the Bush amnesty ploy, which in the long run has hurt the establishment republican party and galvanized the opposition to it on the right.
The democrat take-over of all branches of government, and the (to be expected) destruction of the US economy that followed, has the country looking for leaders who know what they're doing. Not establishment gladhanders whose only interest in politics is skimming something off the top of the taxpayers for themselves.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama popular support has softened at home, but he still has plenty of fans in Europe, a poll released Wednesday found.
More than three-quarters of those polled in 11 European countries said they approve of Obama's handling of international policies, compared with just over half of Americans having that view.
Things are going so good for Barry they have to poll Euro-douches to find someone who stills loves him

All the big names on your side (and many, many commenters here) already said they wouldn't support Castle over Coons, if Castle were to win the primary. So, please don't pretend that now we've all got to get in line because you're gal won. The hypocrisy is nauseating.
This is the thing that fuckin' drives me nuts about the "feelings voters." They're irrational; they can't be reasoned with. Do you think I like defending the NRSC? Hell no. I wrote posts and posts about their failings. I spent weeks bashing Cornyn for his failures over the Sotomayor nomination. There are many legitimate reasons to be angry with them.
But to be pissed off that they won't spend money in a state the polls say we're much, much further behind is not a legitimate reason to get pissed off. That's just pathetic. And irrational.

After Bush, the RNC and Republican incumbents wanted to "remake" the GOP image, successfully tarnished as the party of corruption by the DNC.
Now the Republican establishment appears brain dead, having been GIFTED the Tea Party revolt, the only Republican life line, only to reject what they said they SAID they wanted to fight: corruption in government.

You know, I totally agree with you. But I take it a step further, I don't think anyone but those with lockers should be in the locker room. I think we would have more talk, more discussion, more revelations in sports if people were given time to decompress, take a shower, clean up, get dressed and compose their thoughts, why they lost, how they think they won, what they are thinking. And then I think there should be a nice lounge where the press can drink free soda and munch on chips and where they are assured every player will stop by if even just to say hello. We have lost our civility, our respect for the individual, our respect for someone's time to be alone with themselves. I think the sports' stories would be a lot better if people had tie to be people.

Sadly, they're not acting.
Gotta love the scorn for "feelings" voters, too. Tell me: How is that any different from Obama's infamous remarks about "bitter clingers"?
Answer: Obama at least thought he was saying it privately. The GOP and their cheerleaders are saying it openly, right to our faces.
Interesting to find out how many people are really not too far from Peter Jennings. "The American voters had a temper tantrum last night . . . "
If nothing else, this whole Delaware fiasco has revealed some very interesting things. About people we thought were on our side.

With all of that said, I believe it is possible, just possible that the OD win may pay very large dividends in the future, even if we don't win the immediate g/e. Think the main twins haven't noticed their kindred spirits being ushered out? Think the "leadership" isn't taking note, between tantrums, and trying to figure out how to harness the energy and move right so they remain leaders?
If ODs win helps drag the entire party back to the right, setting up more solid candidates and decisions in the future, then it can be another step in the journey of a 1000 miles back towards smaller, conservative government.
The revolution has started. The "leadership" on our side can push/ pull towards victory or get the f out of the way.

RNC-the PEOPLE elected Christine O'Donnell. So why don't you work with the people and support her, rather than taking your toys and going home? What whiny-babies.
Exactly. Had Castle won, I am sure O'Donnell's camp would have sucked it up and supported him. But the RINOs never play with the team, from Nelson Rockefeller to John Anderson to now.
And I respect those who for pragmatic reasons urged a Castle vote.
But the primary is over. If the NRSC won't pull together now, then they are less than useless.

As a supporter of her totally grassroots candidacy, you look silly screaming at the establishment when they won't give you money after you won. You also lose a bit of your legitimacy as an outsider.
So are you saying that in order to qualify for financial support from the Republican fund committees as a Republican running in a general election you are not allowed to run a grassroots campaign? ODonnell ran against the establishment in DE. Miller ran against the establishment in AK. Angle ran against the establishment in NV. Are they not getting assistance from the NRSC?

Fact: The establishment here in Delaware annointed one person and ran a campaign that backfired badly. I was giving warnings about this for weeks. It was not an insurgency here so much as people taking advantage of the first real primary in years, and a party taking those same people for granted.
Fact: Many here, including myself, stressed that neither side should adopt this pig ignorant attitude the day after.
Fact: Less than a day after the primary win, you're writing off the Delaware race, hiding behind money
Fact: If Castle won, and an O'Donnell supporter had said something nearly this malicious, you'd be deside yourself.
Fact: I voted for Castle.
Fact: It is very interesting to note that you never adopted until now the "No one should give her any money if she wins" bit until after the primary.
Fact: next time, stay the Hell out of Delaware and her politics. You've proven yourself to be no friend or help. So stop with the meddling.

Much of his political knowledge is numbers and traditional thinking about trends.
I think he's still in the bubble. Last night he looked to me like someone whose complete world-view had been demolished.
I am beginning to wonder if Bush's wins weren't mostly due to Bush's force of personality, his likeability, and the luck of having detestable opponents (Gore and Kerry). I think Rove has been in politics for so long that he doesn't really meet any average people, and he doesn't understand what we are thinking.
I also learned that he is the one who counseled Bush not answering the accusations of lying. That worked well, didn't it? Another example of how he didn't understand what the grassroots were thinking.

Total Republican statewide turnout: 32%
Total Democrat statewide turnout: 12%
There were several state level primaries, and one district had both Republican and Democrat candidates for that district. The turnout in that district alone was almost 2:1 for the Republican primary compared to the Democrat primary.
On Average, across the nation the Republicans (with TEA party help) are consistently running a 2.5:1 or 3:1 turnout ratio compared to the Democrats.

Mike Castle was one of theirs. A chosen man. A loyal spear carrier. A candidate K Street could work with. He paid his dues and it was time to for the political aristocracys to award Castle his fief.
And Angle and Miller? Well, they're out West. There's nothing out West but cowboys, NRA types, and other sorts of kooky barbarians. Not to mention that Delaware is very close to the Emerald City, which means the bastards are at the gates.

Serious question about Castle's vote for Kucinich's Bush impeachment:
It is said Castle voted for it just to get it out of committee (to get to the floor?) to where it would be defeated.
This is the question: Was Castle's vote *necessary* to do just that? In other words, was Castle's vote a pivotal vote on the matter?

Blue Hen I have read every one of your posts about this and the two other Delaware posters. It has truly been an education and in many ways, in the very beginning when you were articulating your frustrations with the DE GOP you sort of called the race ahead of time but didn't know it. I would venture to guess, were you not reading all the stuff about "losing a seat versus principle" on this blog that you might have pulled the lever for Christine if not just out of frustration with the GOP in your state.
I'm a New Yorker as my dad says "born and bred", sometimes I LOL at what people think about New York and New Yorkers and I'm a down stater so we are really the ones they love to hate. I gasped last night by what I saw. I gave money to a dem, yep to a dem, a person I thought really deserved the slot, they lost and that loss spoke volumes to me and others. Suffice it to say, I can't find the GOP in NYS, it seems to have melted into the democratic party.
So I know where you are coming from. I learned here that you and the other delewareans really know your state. Heck all you need is for a few independents and a few "conservative dems" to vote for O'Donnell and you have an upset.

This is from yesterday, but whatever.
Hartford City Council thought it would be a good idea to have a Muslim prayer. People not happy, strangely enough. They switch it to a moment of silence, leading to this brilliant journalistic turn of phrase:
However, some who attended MondayÂ’s prayer vigil said the silence is letting the haters have the last word.

Do you see the problem with a Castle-like win?
Now, imagine the other "moderate" Republicans - let's say there are 5 to 10 viables - who each can play the same game as a Castle? Do you really see an overwhelmingly positive winning strategy here if you reinforce the liberal wing of the "conservative" side even if you win chairmanships and schedule?
We've done the moderating angle for years. It failed miserably and tarnished the GOP almost irreparably. The nation has moved Left, we are bankrupt, and government is as intrusive as it has ever been. What insanity it is to repeat the formula that got us here. The only salvation has been the historical collapse of the Democrats due to the Marxist-in-Chief and his Congressional Progressive caucus. It has had pretty little to do with the GOP doing anything other than tossing up a few roadblocks (though those few were helpful) and much more to do with a catastrophically ignorant and/or ideologically socialist Democrats.
So, sacrificing too much now in the hopes of getting that one vote majority is a bit of a fool's errand. There needs to be a concerted realignment without the blessing of "bipartisanship" to further damage the conservative brand. The tiniest short-term majority at the expense of sturdy, ideological shifting to the Right would be counterproductive. Even an O'Donnell loss - which I don't concede at all this cycle - would not be catastrophic. Her win sends a message. It already has sent a message, and that message is going to bias legislation before November even arrives.

And for the "Fuck you Mark Levin et al for losing us the 51st Senate seat crowd: When the hell was a 51st Senate seat ever in the bag for the GOP and, guess what, in a 51 Senate seat majority that includes Mike Castle, the most important vote in the Senate is Mike Castle's. Ummm, no thanks, I'll take my chances with the crazy cat lady. All I really want from the Senate is enough reliable votes to sustain a filibuster no matter what Collins and Snowe decide to do. 2012 is the year when the Senate is really in play.
P.S. I have seen the idea argued elsewhere that now the Dems will have some more free cash to use against Angle, Rand, etc. since they won't need to spend it in Delaware. Really? I thought Mike Castle was a stone cold lock for the seat. Gabriel seems to be think so. Why would the Dems throw money at a seat they couldn't win? No, oddly enough, if the Dems think they can win in Delaware, they will spend money there-money they will not be using against Angle, Rand, etc. So, we can thank Christine O'Donnell for two things: The Dems will funnel money into Delaware, and that worthless p.o.s. Linc Chaffee doppleganger will not be the 50th or 51st vote in the Senate.

The vote in question was on a motion to refer Rep. Dennis Kucinich's impeachment resolution to the Judiciary Committee, where most of the Republicans who voted on it calcluated it would die a slow death, with no one willing to give it time in the committee. And, there it did die. Castle's office said that it opposed impeachment because "they believed there weren't any crimes committed by the Bush administration."
Wow. Imagine if the whole primary had been Castle defending his actual record and O'Donnell not denying hers. People wouldn't be at each others' throats right now.

@305 As has been pointed out by everyone who actually pays attention to Senate procedural rules, that wasn't a vote for impeachment. It was a vote to take it off the House floor and send it back to committee where it could die. They didn't have enough dems to do it, as it was a privileged resolution requiring more than a simple majority.
However, continue to bask in your own ignorance, dipshit.

Drive-Through Tax Proposed for Road Money
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The time you save using the drive-through could end up costing you more.
The West Virginia Department of Transportation is floating the idea of charging an additional tax on food purchased at drive-throughs. The idea was discussed Monday at a meeting of state legislators.
It would be an extra 5 percent, added to the 6 percent customers already pay.
It could bring in tens of millions of dollars for roads, according to official estimates.
But, some restaurant owners fear it would hurt business.

She is the nominee. No one is denying that. She has also burned bridges and is down 13 points in the polls. When she has a chance of winning, then the "establishment" -- the people who are good at career politics and the people who donate time and money to their organizations -- might deem it prudent to allocate resources to her. In the mean time, there are a lot of other winnable races to focus on.

They'll spend that much in PA and in Missouri. Merely winning the primary is not an automatic guarantee of huge NRSC funds.
They only have $20M. How much should O'Donnell reasonably expect of that limited fund when she's now polling double digits behind Coons? Particularly when she wasn't so nice, herself, to the NRSC.
Let her pull to within a handful and then she can really scream if they don't help.

Yes. By a 251-166 vote, the House sent the 35-count articles of impeachment to the Judiciary Committee, which let it die without further action. The vote technically forced the measure to the committee for consideration, it also meant the full House avoided having to debate and vote on impeaching the 43d president.

This is what November is about:
1. Take the House (likely)
* Committee chairs and INVESTIGATIONS!
* Control of the budget
* No legislative support for the Obama agenda
2. Enough Senate seats for filibuster (likely)
* No legislative support for the Obama agenda
3. Take the Senate (long shot)
* Committee chairs and investigations
* Block nominees
* Possible party-line impeachment removal (extremely unlikely to get 51 votes)
4. Veto-proof House majority (long, long shot)
* Adds nothing without corresponding numbers in Senate
5. Veto-proof Senate majority (impossible)
* With veto-proof House majority, begins jamdown rollback
I understand reaching for the stars, but the first two are within grasp. Anything achieved beyond those is icing on the cake.
The follow-up question is whether a GOP House majority and 40+ GOP Senators are sufficiently principled to wield the tools they are handed.

Seems like a good plan to me. If you don't take money from the party, from certain companies, from lobbyists then you don't owe them anything no do you. Pay for your own dinner and the guy can't say "well I paid for your dinner"

The tea party already made it clear they were not donating to the RNC, NRSC or NRCC by hanging up on their representatives and writing angry letters and sending back solicitation envelopes. They are keeping their own donors happy who think O'Donnell is a loon. You guys want to send messages. Fine. Look how seriously people started taking Ron Paul when he raised his own money. Now his son, after deposing the establishment pick, has the full weight of the party's support behind him.

Yeah, because a football locker room, a biker bar, a frat party, and a construction site are the most obvious places to assume that men will be classy. Because camel toes are the epitome of class in their own right, huh?

Spending money you don't have is for slimy Dem politicians. The NRSCC has very finite resources, so it makes sense to use them where it will do the most good. If you haven't donated to them (just a guess, but I'm thinking the non-donor group includes most of the O'D supporters here), why should they listen to you about how they spend what they have?
The Repub establishment is looking at a movement (Tea Party) that, despite claims of non-partisanship, seems to be directed by people who want to dump the fatcat Rs just as they do the Dems. You can't expect them to hasten their demise by supporting the people and groups who want to replace them.
It's the old "business, not personal" game. Too many people are taking it personally.

I'm talking about mainstream R donors, not tea party folks. Expect more of that money to dry up too. Last I heard, she got a majority of registered R votes in Delaware last night.
Like I said, winning strategy. Penny-wise and pound-foolish at the end. The establishment is no doubt getting bombarded with email/phone calls/etc. of registered R prior-donors who will now re-purpose their R donations to individual candidates. I would wager that, in the end, the value of the lost contributions will be greater than the amount of a small investment into her campaign.
Their choice, though.

Certainly, the GOP establishment isn't obligated to support O'Donnell -- or anyone else who runs as an anti-establishment candidate-- but to stand in front of microphones in the wake of her victory and declare sullenly they will neither support or fund her campaign is a bit .... crude. I thought the "women's groups" went over the edge when they demanded -- and got -- unlimited access to sports teams' locker rooms. Maybe sports dudes who are built like brick latrines don't much care, but I, for one, would like to have some privacy in their position, not only because I don't like strangers of any sex staring at what I have, but because the end of any game can be time when a little privacy is necessary to deal with the frustration and fatigue of the event.
Maybe I'd see it in a different way if I was a reporter assigned to cover women's sports and could wander freely into their locker rooms and get the lowdown straight from a bunch of naked babes.
Oh, wait. I couldn't.

I'm not sure what you mean by "clarity." If O'Donnell loses by a landslide, will that be included in your "clarity"? How about a nightmare scenario in which she loses, and we lose the Senate majority by one vote?
Have to get out of the house now, so I'm not ducking your answer.
No sweat, I've been out, just got back. By clarity, I mean that I think a lot of people have shown themselves for who or what they believe. I think there are people on both sides who have behaved rationally in this and there are those who have flipped out. Saying that a vote for O'Donnell was short-sighted because her chances of election in November is fair. Saying that she's not what she appears to be because she has a lot of baggage is certainly valid as well. The problem is that I have seen a lot of name calling on this towards those who supported O'Donnell; a lot of these names are almost exactly the same pejoratives as those used by the left (teabagger, bumpkin, hillbilly), also a lot of attacks against Palin and some against DeMint. What it shows me is that for some people this wasn't about unity or pragmatism at all, it's a cultural clash.
When I say clarity, I mean that we can finally see some people for who they really are, what they really stand for, and when the chips are down who is going to be in the foxhole right next to you and who is going to shoot you in the back. Karl Rove, I'm talking to you.
I never really got too much into this Delaware debate and don't know what I would have done. I couldn't stand McCain but voted for him out of perceived duty. I voted for Graham for the same reason, though I am now an absolutist on him and will absolutely never vote for him again. Were I a Delaware voter I more than likely would have sympathized with O'Donnell but voted for Castle and been really disgusted for doing it.

The NSRC has released a statement, signed by John Cornyn, saying that they support ALL Republican candidates including Christine O'Donnell, and they are sending her the maxmimum amount they send to ALL primary winners, $42,000.
Further donations to candidates will depend on where they think their money can be used most effectively.
So everyone quit arguing. Apparently the NSRC comment last night was either from a hotheaded aide or was manufactured by Carl Cameron. Or, the NSRC was swamped with calls and e-mail and reconsidered their position.
Now, we need to get Rove to apologize.

THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!
Every time (repeat: EVERY TIME) some squish RINO has won a primary (McCain just being the biggest, recent example: remember, the Tea Party supported Brown for very legitimate reasons, at the time) we, the grass-roots, conservative base of the party have been told to "get behind the candidate." We've been told "they may not be perfect, but they're our candidate..."
Well, the shoe is now on the other foot. You lost. Those Republican voters in DE turned out not to be as squishy as you thought, now get behind the candidate and try to help us win. Saying "O'Donnell can't win" and "she's behind in the polls" is stupid and self-defeating.
She couldn't win the primary, either, until she did. Maybe, just maybe, the Establishment needs to wake up to the fact that most of this country really does support the government getting out of the way. Maybe you need to face up to the fact that a large majority of this country (and I'm willing to be Delaware, too) are big on: personal responsibility, the sanctity of human life, balancing the budget, true energy independence, and all those other things the grass-roots is for.
Suck it up. Grow up. Support the candidate

Assuming that money = advertising = exposure = persuasion (to some degree), it strikes me as ridiculous to see them refuse funding, and to do it in the most offensive, damaging way. Its clear to me that this is an attempt to sabotage her, so they can say, "See? We told you she couldn't win. Now bow and tug your forelock and do as we say, ignorant peasant scum."
I'd also like to see the raw numbers for the polls that show the Marxist so far ahead of O'Donnell. Are they talking registered voters? Likely voters? People who answered the phone?

Well said. One of the attractions of the Tea Party movement as of now is that it is not a rigid, formalized political party. It could endorse a Dem if said Dem adhered to the amorphous "principles" espoused at most rallies so far. Assuming a Dem would be for limited, financially responsible government; such beings haven't been sighted for many decades.
Remember the howls when someone set up a for-profit Tea Party organization? Many people understood that the end result wouldn't fit the aims of the movement's millions of followers.
This conservative movement needs neither formal statements of purpose -- except for the Constitution, which should guide all Americans -- nor "famous faces" representing it. That way lies disunity and failure.
