Tammy Bruce (.com):
Too late Dumb Bastard. Everything else you have planned makes token tax cutting irrelevant. They spend trillions telling us this will save the economy. They pass ObamaCare which is like throwing gasoline on the economic fire. And now 8 weeks away from the midterms these bastards start talking about tax cuts. Priceless. YouÂ’re fired, and everyone you associate with is fired. In fact, all your friends are fired, too. ItÂ’s November 2nd. Be prepared, because we are and weÂ’re not gonna stop.
I get the feeling she's mad about something...

It's a mistake to expect 80-100 seats in the House and taking over the Senate. I'm with Sabato's and Geraghty's estimates this AM.
Geraghty brings some very interesting comments from his Obi-Wan, along the lines of- Do you think the Dems and the MFM are gonna sit on their hands and let us take away their power? Ever seen how someone fights when their survival is at stake?
Q: What can the GOP do?
First, predict it. Just tell the people that the White House and Democrats will try and control the media dynamic and narrative.
This is what they do. They donÂ’t really know how to govern for the public good; if they could do that, they would be in better shape. What they do know to do is use media events to hold onto power, to go on television and blab.
Second, Republicans ought to be using the words “October Surprise” endlessly. Hold a contest to see who comes up with the most creative suggestion for what the Dems might do.
Third, and above all, they need to cut off the one escape route the Democrats have, particularly the “moderate” Democrats who are trying to run away from Obama. Get the word out that this election is not just about Obama — he is just a symptom of what the Democratic party has been since 1972.- Obi-Wan
This weekend is the "deep breath before the plunge." The next two months will be D-Day at Omaha Beach.

True Story. A friend of mine got a call from Fannie Mae, otherwise known as the Federal Government. Fannie Mae told him he had to lower the price of his house so that he could only make a certain percentage before they would approve any buyers FHA loan.
Welcome to Barney Frank's America.
The federal government is now telling YOU how much money you are allowed to make.
Our government is a toxic liberty-killing communist mess.

PbPost reporting that Rick Scott may announce state Rep. Jennifer Carroll, R-Fleming Island, as his running mate today.

She was elected to the state House in 2003. Only black Republican in state legislature.

Whatever it once may have been, it is now a euphemism for government regulation of the internet. It's actually an idea that sounds halfway decent on the surface (if you've ever experienced the annoyance of cable and satellite "packages")... until you realize that moonbats are behind it and that they are lying about their intentions, which are to clamp down on freedom and silence speech they don't agree with.

How long before Obama's mama hooked up with her indonesian? I was wondering if, after reviewing the birfer thread, if Obama might not be african at all but indonesian. That would certainly cut down on his being considered black and also explain his disregard of his kenyan relatives. I'm guessing she had no idea who the actual father was. Perhaps an "unknown" on the birf certificate would throw his african roots into doubt. And I'm done with conspiracy theories for the day, thank you.

Billboard buyer shares why he brought 'Vote Obama?' sign to the Ozarks
When it comes to politics, there may be as many opinions as cars cruising down U.S. 65. So, naturally, there are different reactions to a billboard south of Ozark that says "Voted Obama? Embarrassed yet?"
"I know the president didn't win down here, but there were a lot of people down here that voted for him, and I think I can speak for them and say we are not embarrassed yet," Matthew Patterson, executive director of the Greene County Democratic Central Committee, said in a telephone interview on Sunday.
"My partner and I felt lots of frustration here lately, and we liked that sign and we thought that was a reasonable question to ask," Steve Critchfield said in a telephone interview on Monday.
Critchfield and his business partner from Commercial One Brokers, a real estate firm in Branson, saw a similar sign online, bought it, and brought it to the Ozarks.
"I've certainly voted for people I'm embarrassed to say I've voted for," he said. "We're not naïve enough to think that we wouldn't get someone to be upset. I'm just surprised how upset people are." Critchfield says he's received death threats due to the sign; people accuse him of hate speech and racism.

Kingston: Lower drinking age for Soldiers
Congressman sponsors bill to let servicemen younger than 21 drink beer or wine on post.
The bill only applies to situations where beer or wine is intended for immediate consumption. It would not let personnel buy it at post stores and take it to drink somewhere else.
So far, Kingston has only one co-sponsor for his proposal, Gene Taylor, D-Miss.
But the bill faces a potential roadblock--Joe Wilson, R-SC. Wilson is the top-ranked GOP member of the Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Military Personnel.
"Although I normally see eye to eye with Congressman Kingston," Wilson said, "I oppose this particular piece of legislation. My concern is that lowering the drinking age for active duty service members could lead to alcohol abuse."
Interesting argument. The legal drinking age in Okinawa is 20, and D'oh Boy definitely takes advantage (he's nearly 21). Kingston finishes with this comment:
"I think we owe it to the people who are helping create our freedom to have a mature discussion about theirs."

Schools ban bracelets promoting cancer awareness
Cancer has ravaged several of Ann Aberson's relatives, so she doesn't have a problem with her two teenage daughters wearing bracelets to raise awareness of breast cancer.
But their school principal does.
This week, Baltic High School, just north of here, became one of the latest across the USA to ban the rubber bracelet, which has a message some say is in poor taste: "I love boobies."
The bracelets have caused controversy in schools in states including California, Colorado, Idaho, Florida and Wisconsin. Some districts allow students to wear them inside-out, and others ban them.
------
Those bracelets are stupid.

It is a much pushed federal intrusion in to internet regulation. It started out as an attempt to push through congress but failed. Now they are trying to get the FCC to push it through w/o congress in the same manner as Obama has been doing all along.
The feds want it because it expands their power and gets the camel's nose in the tent and it also gave an "in" for the government to control content in the name of "neutrality". The people who are really pushing it are the big internet "user's" like Google who want to market things like streaming video movies and downloading video movies.
The "neutrality" name comes from a little bit of propaganda in the naming of the original bill to make it seam like all they were doing was making the internet neutral for all users. In actuality what the bill does is force the people who build and maintain the internet infrastructure to provide access to these big users at the same rates as the little users. In other words the huge bandwidth hogs who load down the net would get access for the same price as others.
This is not a "good" thing for the average consumer. It is market interference at the request of one group of players against another group of players. IOW, more laws favoring the political able and, as usual, the average Joe is left in the dirt.
The FCC has tried to push this through once before in an end-run around congress and they were challenged in court. They lost.
They haven't given up yet.

Is Mayor Bloomberg being wooed to join the Obama administration?
Asked about last weekend's four-hour golf game with President Obama on Martha's Vineyard, Bloomberg told reporters yesterday, "The economy was the main subject, other than discussing golf."
Now there are whispers that the president went even further and sounded out Bloomberg about whether he would join his foundering economic team as treasury secretary, replacing prime blame-target Timothy Geithner.
"Obama needs Bloomberg more than Bloomberg needs Obama," a source tells us. "Obama's looking to do something bold and credible before the election."

Steadman Shabazz Holder has filed another suit against Arizona:
In the new suit, filed Monday, the Justice Department says Phoenix-area Maricopa Community Colleges (MCC) discriminated against almost 250 noncitizen job applicants by requiring them to fill out more documents than the law requires to prove their eligibility to work.
Â…
It’s “unlawful to treat authorized workers differently during the hiring process based on their citizenship status,” said Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a statement. The government is “acting now to remedy this pattern or practice of discrimination.”
i'm sure asking for the additional information has nothing to do with the fact that the feds can shut down anything they want if they find illegal aliens have been hired....forcing mcc as well as all businesses to be overly cautious in their hiring practices......i wonder if the "discrimination" was merely not hiring these people because they were not qualified.......AND WHY IS THE JUSTICE DEPT BENDING OVER BACKWARDS FOR NON CITIZENS? THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING FOR US!

The backroom deals, the midnight meetings behind closed doors, the transparency promise that went up in smoke. All that MUST be placed in the spotlight again.

"Net Neutrality" is at the top of organized labor's wish list. It sounds so innocuous, just like "Employee Free Choice". Just like EFC, Net Neutrality is the opposite of what it sounds like.
It requires internet service providers to give away their product at the lowest price to all users, no matter how much bandwidth they suck up. It would be like the Mall of America should pay the same electric bill as the two-bedroom house down the street. No matter that Mall of America is using 100x plus the amount of electricity, the dollar amount paid by the mall should be the same as the dollar amount paid by the homeowner.
Unions want it because some of the few private sector unions still in existence today in the US are communications unions, and Net Neutrality would destroy those businesses (AT&T, Verizon, etc). I know that's counterintuitive, but that's just how unions operate. Any unionized industry is eventually bankrupted and forced out of business.

If you build a canal that will handle 100K gal/hr water to a nearby town and have a bunch of small water vendors using your canal for the rent of $20/week and then Joe Megawater comes along and wants to push 75K gal/hr through your canal for the same $20/week even though it will cause you to have to spend a million dollars to upgrade the canal you would fight it as well.

Except that to gain authorized employment, the law DOES require documentation: birth certificate, driver's license, and social security card for citizens. And authorized non-citizens have to produce their passport and visa. Just because Holder makes an illegitimate statement does not grant the statement legal standing.Sue, counter sue. It's time for Arizona to sue Holder and Obama for corruption of office without waiting for the next assault from DC. Provide the groundwork for impeachment while protecting American citizens and the State of Arizona.

The original idea is that a network would treat all data the same, regardless of origins. This is efficient for the network infrastructure, but not so great for small users who get effectively clobbered by big ones.
So of course someone got the idea of modifying the infrastructure to be friendlier to the smaller users (who are often more numerous than the larger users). Of course the smaller users loved this, as they could get decent guaranteed performance, but the big users who saw performance degrade...not so much.
Then someone in marketing realized they could defray the costs of this sort of thing by sorting the users by who was willing to pay for performance, so small and big could get the same speeds...if they were willing to pay for it. A nice, market-based solution.
Enter the anti-market folks. I think you can figure out the rest.
Politics are truly a plague upon mankind.

If she has transferable skills, maybe she should look into the non-profit sector. I don't mean church group type social service agencies, but the big guns like The Nature Conservancy or strong universities. They often want people with a corporate background for both the money/endowment/compliance management end of things and even for some front-line fundraising work, such as corporate relations or sponsorships.
Of course, she's probably looking at a big pay cut, but I think going non-profit for a few years and returning to for-profit could make a good story. When Obama first took office, one of his early speeches was @ Arizona State University's commencement. Then the brouhaha because ASU didn't award Obama an honorary degree to compensate for his troubles.
Obama came to Austin, TX to address the public the other week. The only crowd that showed up were UT/Austin students for the most part. In that address, Obama praised American community colleges (the roar subsided to a muffle of approval from those UT students) as the SOLUTION to American public education, finishing with the "promise" to provide higher education for "free" because "something must be done" to change the numbers higher than 50% of minority students failing to complete any college degree within 6 years of study.
Now Obama's DA henchman is suing one of the BEST community college systems in the US organized in 1960 in Maricopa County Community Colleges to match ASU curriculum and faculty quality in order to alleviate ASU's night programs for working adults and high school graduates on a tight budget.

there's another piece to this.. There's consolidation going on that could impact networks considerably.
Comcast is out to buy NBC. The "fear" is that without a net neutrality guarantee, Comcast could offer, for instance, a high-speed NBC sourced movie channel. And they could give priority to Comcast customers when viewing content from this source.
So, you can see where this will lead. The same goes for other conglomerates.
You want to watch a YouTube video, but your neighbors are all using the bandwidth that has a guaranteed higher priority than yours.
It's a potential real problem.. but it is still one I would still like to see the free market solve, rather than more regulatory nonsense.. especially from the FCC!

--
I think the community college trend is one that both sides embrace. I've met a lot of conservatives who are so mistrustful of higher education that they really will only support community college and trade school type education. I admit, I'm not fully comfortable with it, but that's my Research I university bias showing.
I think access is extremely important, but some of these colleges use people who are simply not qualified to teach anything and some of the students are not able to learn anything. Basically, they can be just big high schools. On the other hand, for some people, community colleges serve a purpose, especially if you want to mature a couple of years before going away to college/university or if you have a specific trade or certification you need to get as a working adult.
As I say, I'm conflicted. I tend to prefer the model where the large public universities, particularly the land grants whose mission is supposed to be much more practical education centered, learn how to deliver education to a wider range of students. It would teach the faculty to be more relevant in what they study.

I think the plus about that strategy, if she can afford to do it, is that it gives her a great story for re-entering her main field. I actually think it could help her advance later on. Supreme Court Justice Alan Keyes has a nice ring to it...

I don't give a shit about elections in 2012.
Jacked thing about it is the Light Bringer™ could still get re-elected. The economy is bound to get less worse (Bush tax cuts extended for everyone except the people that pay all the taxes), he'll have a Republican Congress to blame, and have you noticed he's sort of black? Liberals are so condescending toward minorities, they will overly praise any minor accomplishment....this jug-eared bastard gets Special Olympics-grade applause from them.

This is a flaw in the "free-market solutions" model, IMO.
In past centuries, business generally gained market share by offering products at lower prices, or by putting more value into whatever they made/sold. Today, businesses buy out the competition and get a stranglehold on their area. Look at all the dot-coms that are acquiring every company that might pose a threat to them.
While many howl about regulating businesses -- you there, Kudlow? -- there is a legitimate reason for anti-trust laws.
In theory, such a law should not be necessary. But some greedheads in the corporate world would rather take the easy way out than put in the hard work to put their own products and services on top.

I agree absolutely. But the point is that Obama promotes something that he immediately mutilates, education through community colleges.
think access is extremely important, but some of these colleges use people who are simply not qualified to teach anything and some of the students are not able to learn anything. Basically, they can be just big high schools.
That is exactly what Austin Community Colleges are, often LESS proficient than high school, hiring anyone to teach whatever, spending as much on flower arrangement "continuing ed" programs as on core curriculum. This exacerbates the outrage, that Obama attacks one of the nation's FINEST community college systems while promoting the worst, because he could.

Community colleges serve a unique role and I'm not badmouthing them in any way; but ManBearPig and his ilk show their hypocrisy by boosting something that they'd never set foot on even though they're significantly dumber than the average student.

Barky really think that a lack of community college is what keeps "50% of minority students failing to complete any college degree within 6 years of study."
That, and crackas. Keeping a brother down. This is racism against a black man, straight up. Reptile brain and all that.

Everything I've ever heard from -- or read about -- Keyes suggests he'd be as much an "activist" judge as the worst lefty scumbag.
I don't want anyone, from left or right, dictating the way I live my life. Keyes gives the impression of being the kind of guy who won't be happy until every American lives, works, believes and acts just like...Alan Keyes.

The theory should take human nature into account (isn't that one of the reasons we bag on socialism?). So the reason the law is neccessary isn't greed being an aberation, but some circumstance that makes cheating easier than making better stuff. Maybe it is the nature of the industry (in which case we need more laws), though in a lot of cases it's probably unforeseen effects of other regulation.

Posted by: HeatherRadish at September 02, 2010 07:19 AM (yhlnw)
True, but it is an interference that we have been living with since the days of Teddy "trustbuster" Roosevelt. This is the exact kind of situation that the anti-trust laws were developed. And it would fix a problem without any "new" laws which inevitably will create other problems.
But yes, the ideal situation would be to get the government totally out of business all together the way it pretty much used to be before the early 1900s.
The only thing the government should be doing is enforcing the laws against theft, fraud, and violation of legal contracts.
But we will NEVER go back to that so we have to have laws to fix the problems caused by other laws.

Yes, I'm kidding.
However, I actually think Keyes' challenge of the Obama eligibility seemed quite legitimate. I was appalled that a candidate did not have standing to challenge another candidate's eligibility.
And on the few occasions I've listened to Alan, I have to say I enjoy the way he delivers his message. He's nice to listen to, unlike jugears.

"50% of minority students failing to complete any college degree within 6 years of study."
Obama was talking all over the place, like throwing candy to the crowd, only speaking in English instead of rallying with SÃ, se puede. It wasn't just the community college but the 4-yr. bachelor's degree that he promised to provide to students "because we're a better nation than that."
These kids don't stop to consider that THEY are the ones who will pay for their federally subsidized education, THROUGH THE NOSE because they opted to get it from federal tax supplies always squandered on bureaucracies along the way before ever reaching the student, creating black hole debt that everyone pays to fund, compared to an individual purchase for education with confined debt limited to what the individual borrows.
/Who ever thought that a free lunch would encourage starvation?

I agree that anti-trust enforcement is necessary because of human nature, but even Dr. Sowell has a blind spot about this.
A distorted market is a distorted market. It doesn't matter whether it's government doing the distortion or a big-ass, rent-seeking monopoly player throwing its weight around.
When I ask myself where my expected reactionary revulsion toward anti-trust laws went, I remind myself that a corporation is a creation of the government (in this country, that's supposed to be "we, the people") and must thus live by all the rules--not just the ones that work to its benefit.

My generation was at the cusp, the youngest children of WWII vets. We still had the same curriculum as our elders though things were definitely changing. But we witnessed the changes, knowing how it "was" as well as having to make adjustments for "new, improved" messaging. It was the new college grad kids replacing the retiring faculty of high schools who encouraged CHANGE.
You know, Rep. Harry Mitchell should be up in arms for the Maricopa County Community Colleges that he represents as a former high school teacher. Raum got Mitchell elected, beating JD Hayworth who just can't seem to win anymore.

I disagree.
Even though there are a lot of crap courses in a community college, don't write them off. In my experience, they do a damn fine job of preparing students for a medical career. Nursing, Respiratory, Radiology etc. Gets you into the field without the expense of a major degree.
I got a 2yr degree in medicine, and went on to work for years at a very large hospital in LA. Although I've since left the field, it was a CC that gave me my start.
I really don't think they teach that sort of thing in H.S.

Ahh, trips down memory lane of the days when I used to carry a Palm are swirling.
Yes, I lost the stylus after about three or four months. Best toy I ever got, though, was a Staedler pen. One of those retractable types with three different barrels inside, so you could get either a ballpoint pen, a mechanical pencil, or a plastic stylus tip. It was great. NEVAR without my stylus!
...'til I lost the pen, at least...

On the other hand, for some people, community colleges serve a purpose, especially if you want to mature a couple of years before going away to college/university or if you have a specific trade or certification you need to get as a working adult.
Community colleges are also a great way to pick up some core curriculum classes on the cheap. If you've had a decent high school education, you can just go ahead and knock out Math and English 101 for a lot less $$$ before transferring to the college or university of your choice. If you haven't had a decent high school education (sadly far too common nowadays), you have the ability to hone your skills in whatever areas your deficiencies may lie before going further. You also get a chance to try out what areas of study interest you before committing to the them later, again at a much lesser expense.
On the other hand, sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Like you said, some of the instructors at the community colleges are awful and their classes are a complete waste of time and money. Then again, even the small elite schools have their share of useless faculty as well.

My premise is that excellence in community colleges is desirable and well worth the necessary taxation. I agree that core curriculum and certified professional training is the role of the public tax funded community college. In our family, most of us have taken community college courses along the way learning computer programs. Our oldest began at a major university, whereas our youngest chose travels before settling at the community college first year before transferring to a major university. Since many of the largest universities with 50K students weed out their less desirable students first year, for some people and personalities, excelling the first year in a smaller setting works best.
The problem is that too many community colleges would not pass accreditation if scrutinized, and like any other form of public (and private) education, squander more budget on architectural flair and administration than on faculty and student lab equipment. I don't care about private institutions' budgets. I do care if I am taxed to provide flower arrangement classes or basket weaving, and I especially care about being taxed to fund incompetence. I am outraged that the POTUS would persecute one of the finest community college systems in America, working to drag it down to the level typical in Austin, TX with ACC.

An online degree? Feasable, but nothing replaces being in a class-room and asking questions, which also may spark someone else. Not to mention the bonding of the students, either studying together or just ragging on the bad teacher. Plus a lot of learning is hands on, one way or the other.
Not gonna get that from just reading.

I think you're conflating "community college" with "technical school", or maybe you're from a state that doesn't make the distinction? Technical/vocational schools prepare people for careers. Community colleges teach pre-algebra to people who never learned it in 8th grade.

That's a tough one imo; but if you already have some basic understanding of accounting principles than I say go for it because each subsequent class will just build on what you already know. I've taken accounting courses at the undergrad and grad school level and each intro level class always has a few people that just don't get it. You see them in class and feel bad for them because you want the light to go on but sometimes it just doesn't, no matter how good the teacher is,

I think online would work well for you. Or maybe there's even a certification program offered through night classes at your local university or CC. Maybe you don't need a "degree" per se.
I worked in a B-school for a few years (sighs wistfully) and our school was wrestling with offering an online MBA. Some very good B-schools have them. But as I understand MBA programs, the students really need a lot of hands on and small group work, so I doubt online can really fit the bill. Perhaps the online degrees augment their programs with some in person work.
