Sept. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Democrats visiting Cuyahoga County, Ohio, can usually count on a friendly reception in this party stronghold. President  Barack Obama, who arrives today, may sense a chill.

While many remain supportive of Obama, who got 68.5 percent of the county vote in 2008, they are angry at the Democratic- controlled Congress as well as state officials. That means trouble for Democrats fighting to keep control of the U.S. House, Senate and statehouses.

“It’s just a circus,” said Linda Powers, a 54-year-old resident of Shaker Heights, ticking off a list of grievances against Congress, from a lack of assistance to manufacturers to the party’s support for gay rights. “They act like children.”

Sept. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Securities firms around the world will cut as many as 80,000 jobs in the next 18 months as revenue growth begins to slow, said Meredith Whitney, the former Oppenheimer & Co. analyst who now runs her own firm.

The reductions, about 10 percent of current levels, will come after 2010 compensation payments, Whitney, 40, said in a report dated Aug. 31 and obtained by Bloomberg News today.

Here's some knowledge for you morons:

Economists said in September 2008 that the economy would collapse if AIG — the insurance company that guaranteed $2.8 trillion in mortgage-backed securities without any collateral — was allowed to go bankrupt, Kanjorski said.

"They were the key to collapsing every financial system in the world," Kanjorski said. "They were making money hand over fist until the beginning of the collapse."

A financial collapse would have been worse than the 1930s Depression, he said. Nobel Prize winners warned lawmakers the economy would regress by centuries and law enforcement officials said personal liberties couldn't be guaranteed, he added.

"They basically said we couldn't provide for law and order," Kanjorski said. "If we didn't do what we did we wouldn't be in the United States today. It would have brought the entire government down."

There will be a political judgment of the government's response this November, but he predicted history will judge their actions as correct.

The regulatory reform package encompasses eight bills, including predatory home loan reform Kanjorski said he first tried to pass following a Poconos hearing in 2004 on Monroe County's massive foreclosure rate. Subprime lending resulted in people being given mortgages they couldn't afford, for homes that weren't worth the sales' price due to collusion among sellers and appraisers who determined the home's local market value.

"We had a mini-picture of what was about to happen in two or three years across the country and it did," Kanjorski said. "Hopefully, appraisers will never again line up with developers, line up with banks."

Kanjorski noted his "too big to fail" amendment that allows government regulators to dismantle multi-faceted corporations whose collapse threaten the entire economy, rather than prop them up with taxpayer money.

"What we have to do is make sure the regulators are willing to use that power and do use it," he said. "It's my estimation they would only have to do it once."

41 I was thinking about something on the drive to work.

I'm probably going to grow some tobacco next year.  Let's say I put in 4 acres.  If I get 2000 lbs/acre (a damn good yield) and the price is 2.00 per lb (a damn good price), after my inputs of ground prep, seed, fertilizer, herbicide, fuel for the tractor, transport to market, and several hundred hours of labor, I estimate a gross profit of about $12000.  Then I pay taxes on that.

My estimate for the government's revenue from that tobacco?  About $150,000.....

Where do you live. In Kentucky you have to have some sort of license or permit to grow tobacco. And they aren't easy to get. Think liquor license. Also, growing from seed is tough and you'll have to build your own starter house. And you'll need a tobacco barn to cure it. Do you have any experience growing tobacco?

SW Ohio, so the climate and soil are about the same, maybe a little better.  There are only 3 tobacco farmers around here that I know of, and they tend to do it themselves.  I don't know about the big producer, who puts in about 12-15 acres every year.  That's a hell of a lot of tobacco.

As for regulation, there might be something in KY, due to the tobacco farming heritage, but the Feds got out of the tobacco reg business years ago.  No different than growing corn, here.

Even after electing our first black president "The Man" is busy persecuting powerful people of color:

Philadelphia's embattled housing director is suing the city agency as he fights to keep his job amid money woes and a string of sexual harassment complaints, his lawyer said.

The federal suit filed Tuesday accuses the Philadelphia Housing Authority of breaching Carl Greene's contract and violating his due process rights, lawyer Clifford Haines said.

Greene, on the job 12 years, earned $350,000 last year running the nation's fourth largest housing agency.

The Philadelphia Housing Authority board and others are investigating how four sexual harassment settlements involving Greene, totaling nearly $900,000, were kept secret for years. Women who worked for Greene said he groped them, demanded sexual favors for promotions and retaliated if they refused him.

Greene has also faced a $50,000 IRS tax lien on outside work and a foreclosure proceedings on his $615,000 townhouse this year. Both debts have since been repaid.

"A court of law is the only place I know of where allegations of the kind alluded to here can be proven — and I'm not talking about delinquent taxes or mortgage payments," lawyer Clifford Haines said Tuesday in a statement. "Those facts are a given and have no bearing on what Carl Greene did or didn't do at PHA."

Greene, 53, has been in an out-of-state medical facility for several weeks to be treated for undisclosed problems, according to Haines.

Greene, in an Aug. 23 letter to the board, said he expected to resume his duties on Sept. 13. He has two years left on his contract.

But the five board members, led by former Mayor John F. Street, voted unanimously on Aug. 26 to put him on indefinite leave while they investigate how the sexual harassment complaints — and payments — were kept secret. The board is supposed to approve any payments over $100,000.

I don't know what its like in OH out there in the tobacco fields but it is damn hot here and full of bugs.

Yep.  The have yet to invent machines for hoeing, suckering, cutting and spearing, hanging, or stripping.

Keeps teenagers out of trouble over the summer, though.  Indeed, it is hotter than two rats fucking in a wool sock hoeing tobacco at 3 in the afternoon in July.

Is there any chance that the FBI, CIA are working with the FL Church holding Burn The Koran Day?  We know that those nice peaceful Muslim are going to attack us soon, we know (HOPE) that our intelligence officials are listening in, and we know that the BO Admin had severely tied their hands.  What better way to listen in to the chatter than to give them something that will piss them up.  Maybe even cause them to speed up their time line, move their target, etc.  That way you have all the worm-dicked idiots in "leadership" positions, the Pope, etc condemming the action and looking good, but at the same time you are inciting the enemy enough to hopefully mess up and reveal themselves.

Right?! Right?! Or am I giving them (our intelligence community, not the Admin) too much credit.

132 Hacking up a lung and gasping for oxygen.  Fucking bronchitis.

Radish, bloody mary regimen, with or without Val-U-Rite. You will want to keep hydrated, so without vodka is better.

BEST BLOODY MARY MIX

1 qt can Sacramento tomato juice
1 lemon juiced
2 tsp tobasco*
2 tsp horseradish
1 tsp Old Bay seasoning
1 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tbsp clam juice
1 shot vodka per serving over ice

(Red Devil has cayenne, a natural expectorant. The antioxidants in peppers support the lungs, while the capsicum thins mucus, allowing you to expel it more easily.)*

While it may sound odd, vegetable oil is one of the most effective natural bronchitis treatments available. By massaging vegetable oil into the back and chest, you can assist in breaking up congestion in the lungs.

It is also advised to have 3-4 cups of rosehip and lemon tea daily. Increase your Vitamin A and C intake. Chamomile tea also improves your immunity to viral infections. Finally, eucalyptus leaf opens the lungs and encourages breathing by increasing oxygen in the cells. Use the organic leaf in teas or in steam inhalation.

Feel better!

I clicked over to the Washington Post story at the link, about the last GE incandescent light bulb factory closing down.  That just burns me to no end, the hypocrisy of Obama/democrats/environmentalists/nanny-state buttinskys, but I repeat myself.

So in 2007 (as soon as the democrats took over the US Congress!) legislation was passed BANNING regular light bulbs by 2014.  Those slimy toads knew full well that all alternative bulbs were being made in China and would always be made in China, due to the large amount of hand labor that goes into compact flourescent bulb-making.

But they went ahead and did it anyway, and now the democrats/Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid/Obama act all surprised that these plants are closing, jobs are being shipped to China, and the factory workers, many in their 40's and 50's, will never get replacement jobs that come anywhere near the wages they are about to lose.

Somebody please explain a couple of things to me, I'm confused:

1) Why does America's elite continue to destroy the jobs of America's working class? and

2) Why does America's elite continue to actively import more illegal aliens who have no job skills, and who are looking to take over those factory jobs that the elite have shipped overseas?

144 CFL bulbs do NOT have to be disposed of as hazardous waste. When that thing about the woman who has a haz-mat team come in to clean up a broken bulb I went to the EPA site and checked.  That was an urban myth.

They said that these bulbs can be disposed of in normal trash just like any other bulb. They also said there is no special cleanup required if you break one other than routine precautions you should be making anyway like don't breath the dust or step on the broken glass barefooted.

They further said that the amount of Hg in the bulbs was infinitesimal and not of concern.

So if your local dump is requiring all kinds of special handling they are doing it because they are stupid. So what to do?

If you are driving over, waiting, filling out forms, and had delivering CFLs you are being teh stupid. Use the waste disposal form of SSS (shoot, shovel, and shutup). Mix them in with kitchen garbage and throw them away.

One more thing... eat radishes. They're good for you, along with watercress, raw spinach and celery. Also, cranberries contain one of nature's most potent vasodilators, which open up congested bronchial tubes so that normal breathing is restored; cranberries are excellent curative and preventive therapy for the entire breathing apparatus. Asthmatics will likewise benefit from real, undiluted cranberry juice, which is a little more expensive, but so worth it.

171 When I have bronchitis, I find that wasabi gets the system cleared out in pretty short order.

Yes, because it's horseradish. The potent ethers in fresh grated horseradish dissolve mucus in the sinuses and bronchial tubes quickly and effectively; mixing it with fresh lemon juice doubles its efficacy. (From the Tao of Sex, Health and Longevity by Daniel Reid) Seriously, fresh bloody mary mix has everything your body needs when you've got a respiratory infection. Vitamin C in the tomato juice, celery garnish (along with radish) alkalizes bloodstream and respiratory tract; accelerates detoxification, restores natural immunity, etc.

National Review has a good article up on the actual stakes in the Quran-becue.

Quote:

...Since Feb. 14, 1989, when Iranian Ayatollah Khomeini pronounced Salman Rushdie a blasphemer and ordered his murder, the OIC lobbied Western governments to repress ridicule and critique of Islam, and dissent within Islam, in ways analogous to the repression already existing in many of its own countries. For example, in the United Nations, the OIC has for over a decade successfully sponsored annual resolutions calling for the creation of an international crime against “defamation” of Islam. This demand that Western governments use state power to coerce compliance by their own citizens with Islamic blasphemy strictures is therefore relatively new.

The campaign has already made significant inroads through lawsuits, diplomacy, economic boycotts, and, at times, lethal force and intimidation — all of which are contributing to a broad chilling effect on speech concerning Islam. Western Europe, Canada, and Australia have reacted to this demand largely ad hoc; they are beginning to deploy racial and religious hate-speech bans to serve as proxies for Muslim blasphemy laws...  (end quote)

But this time theocracy is advancing under the banner of "tolerance" and "religious freedom." So that's different.

Here's some info on the planned Reagan biopic:

Mark Joseph, who optioned the books four years ago, is co-producing with Ralph Winter and Jonas McCord wrote the script.

McCord, whose credits include "Malice" and "The Body," said he wasn't a fan of Reagan but was drawn to the project as he researched the former president's upbringing.

"I was of the opinion that at best he was a bad actor and at worst a clown," McCord said.

There are many things that would affect his mission. Some of the worst 'peace' protests definitely affected the mission. Newsweek lying about Korans being flushed resulted in riots. The AP choosing to ramp up coverage of contractors being tortured, murderd and their bodies being defiled in broad daylight affected the mission.

Please note that none of the Bold and the Beautiful spoke out against any of these. Also, try applying the "what if Dick Cheney or George W Bush had said this?"

The executive director and CEO of Mental Health Kokua, was one of the featured speakers.  Greg Payton told the crowd patients who move into the group home later this month will be supervised eight to sixteen hours per day, seven days a week.  Someone from the non-profit would also be on-call 24 hours a day.

"The idea that somehow the people we are serving are dangerous or commit crimes those are not the people that we are serving at all," he said.

Payton acknowledged patients living in the home would likely suffer from a variety of mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, depression and bi-polar disorder but that didn't mean the community would be less safe.  He said violent offenders are never allowed in homes run by his organization.

"We in fact have a screening process that none of those folks would be allowed in our home.  Those folks with those kinds of issues would be in other kinds of places but not in our housing projects."

You're not in the minority.  It IS an extremely stupid act, and Gen. Petraeus IS correct that it may well increase the risks to our forces.

That has nothing to do with maintaining a proper demeanor as a military commander.  Yes, as CDR M said, they have become political animals.  They always have been.  But they should not be commenting on matters which are at their essences within the civilian realm, and especially not as those relate to possibly abridging the Constitutional rights of the citizenry.  Dangerous line to cross, so don't even go near the line.

Exactly.

That the book burners had to publicize it is the public's annoyance, dragging all of America into their bonfire.

Americans are riled with "moderate" Muslims for refusing to make it their rule as the "majority" in America to out to federal authorities. the radicals from within their communities.  But then, for all we know, they have only to find that Obama's feds have turned the tables on the "moderates" of all religious persuasions.

Publicizing outrage at the outrageous seems the reasonable thing to do, all things considered.

279 oh no, sock FAIL!

Posted by: navycopjoe at September 08, 2010 08:03 AM (gg4j2)

280 Hey I'm with you.

Yeah, I saw that and I feel good to see that an active-duty military officer shares my view.  I'm not looking to feel more "right," but I'm not military so I always try to figure out if my opinions are way off-base.  The safety and effectiveness of our military is paramount, particularly when they're deployed overseas.

I started to get into it with Allahpundit yesterday, but I didn't have the patience.  He just doesn't see a difference between Code Pink's criticism of the administration (which was completely offensive, of course, but still the actions of Americans criticizing their government) and a group going out of its way to commit an act that any religious group would find outrageous.  I do see a distinction.  As you pointed out, the latter really is something that unites and motivates the enemy in a particularly effective way.

It occurred to me that the U.S.'s entry into WWII was much more enthusiastic, if you will, because of the "stick in the eye" act by Japan of conducting a sneak attack.  We were much more motivated than we would have been if Japan had begun by waging limited actions on defined targets.  The outrage the nation felt in response to the sneak attack undoubtedly helped us be more effective.

Same thing with September 11th.  If the "only" act that had occurred were an attack on a U.S. military base, I don't think the country would have united in a way that gave Bush the chance to actually conduct offensive operations.  Instead, the terrorists went out of their way to attack civilians and symbols of American life.

Posted by: nevergiveup at September 08, 2010 08:06 AM (0GFWk)

283

Of course burning Qurans is stupid.

But we've crossed the Rubicon when the entirety of the global elites come down against the peaceful idiot expressing his views instead of those who seek to silence all criticism of their religion through violence.  Only Islam gets this special treatment.

It's not even a fight when we surrender our values willingly.  Petraeus is not in Afghanistan to make the world safe for stealth sharia and global blasphemy laws.  He's there to kill those who try to destroy our way of life.

Let me be outstandingly clear, only offensive speech needs protection.  Being a coward and caving into the demands of a violent mob is not a principled position.   The mere existence of the mob should cause people to oppose it, but not any more.

And perhaps he's lost the deny-ability factor by announcing prior to the  burning that the radical Koran burners provide the radical Jihadists further motivation, reasonable or not.

But then, really, how much more motivation does a radical Jihadist actually require?

Why not take the offensive, and tell the damned radical Jihadists to take their own medicine and STFU. Winning hearts and minds, blah blah blah, never convinced the enemy of anything beyond just how dumb Americans are when it comes to swallowing propaganda that's well intended.

I can see the logic, but I would be surprised if this really makes much difference over there.  They are easily stirred up by petty things, and it's not like the Talibs have let up on their propaganda efforts.  They've doubtless told plenty of lies that make a simple Koran burning look tame, and suckered in the radicals as a result.

Work like this, here at home, helps to create what you might call a hostile environment for our own domestic terrorist wannabes.  If this sort of public display of anti-Islamic sentiment were to become sufficiently common, it might help to reduce muslim immigration and perhaps even encourage some to leave.  That would be optimal.

Fine.  Answer my question at #316.

301 HOLY SHIT:

Check out Dem-leaning PPP's latest poll of Maine.  Where Barack Obama's approval rating is 44%-51%.  And Republican Paul LePage leads Libby Mitchell (D) and Elliot Cutler (I) by a margin of 43-29-11.

I'll repeat.  43-29-11.  Add up Cutler and Mitchell and you still don't get to the margin that LePage has.  I would be seriously interested in seeing some polling on ME's two congressional seats, specifically ME-2.  It could one of those "holy shit wtf?" seats that goes in November.

But I understood and agreed with you.

I only noted the irony of our present circumstance.

Disillusionment may precede but doesn't inhibit reconquest of The Ideal.

303 Perhaps the Generals and Admiral's are speaking out in areas not normally addressed by Flag officers simply because there is NO leadership in the civilian levels of Congress and the White House.

I have no doubt of this.

Are you saying that his conscious decision to air his concerns was anything other than an attempt to chill their planned use of their free speech rights?

Dread.

I don't mind someone like a General attempting to 'chill' speech through persuasion, appeal to his expertise in the matter, etc. Just so long as there is no actual coercion, force, threat of force, etc. I've never really gotten teh whole 'chilling effect' thing--either there is punishment for speaking out, which is unconstituional, or not, in which case the chilling complaint is baseless.

I think burning a Koran is pointlessly provocative, but it is not what the Taliban or Islamic gov'ts do--they will confiscate Bibles, etc, and burn those (and do who knows what to those that owned them), not buy their own to make some symbolic gesture.

Anyway, the only Koran burning that I want is to see Muslims everywhere reject Islam and burn their own in defiance of the chains it places on them.

Fly into Ryadh with a Bible and if customs finds it, it will be shredded while-u-wait.

I've been at the point for quite a while now where I say fuck de muzzies feelings.  They want to come up to the 21st Century, great.  Stop killing over a insults to books and gods and the supposed messenger of gods.

Beheading a person while they are alive or burning a stupid book?  Now which is worse?

They didn't investigate it during the Bush years, either. Posted by: hobgoblin And I won't be voting for Bush in 2010 either. Obama is in charge of DOJ now and if the problem persists then it's his responsibility

Not to mention that his statement is not true either.

Without bitters, it's not a Bloody Mary.

Bloody mary already has a bitter aftertaste, so bitters is overkill.
