"Top Kill" Seems To Be Working In Gulf Oil Spill
— DrewM

Clearly it's part of a conspiracy so that Obama can take credit during his news conference this afternoon.

Not a completely done deal yet but looks promising.

Engineers have at least temporarily stopped the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government's top oil-spill commander, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, had pumped enough drilling fluid to block oil and gas spewing from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well was very low, he said, but persisting. The top kill effort is not complete, officials caution.

Once engineers had reduced the well pressure to zero, they were to begin pumping cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help in that effort, he said, engineers also were pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.

Meanwhile, the Obama appointed director of the Minerals Management Service gets tossed under the bus.

Obama has a press conference scheduled for I think 12:45 eastern. He's going to try and pretend he's been all over this from the start. Most people, including some Democrats, aren't buying it.

“There are times and places where his cool, technocratic mastery is a great blessing. ... But, ideology aside, what do you think [President Ronald] Reagan would have done in this situation? He’d be down there. Look at [Louisiana Gov. Bobby] Jindal. ... It is puzzling, the detachment,” said one veteran Democratic strategist, a frequent defender of Obama.

“I just cringe at the specter of the president doing a political fundraiser in San Francisco during the memorial service instead of going to the memorial service,” the person added. “He was sure there for the coal miners in West Virginia; he spoke at their funerals. That juxtaposition can’t be good.”

I'm somewhat conflicted on this. I think in these cases people overestimate the ability of a President to "Do Something".

This is BPs mess and they and others in the industry are best suited to deal with the immediate problem. The best thing the government can do in these cases is get out of the way (in terms of regulations and permit processes) and not overly micro-manage the situation.

Look at the problem Bobby Jindal is having getting permission from the feds to build sand barriers to protect the coastal marshes in his state.

Could a President be energetic in cutting through that kind of red tape? Sure. But does anyone believe that's the kind of energy a true believer in big government like Obama will bring to the table? My default position is, the less Obama does about a given thing, the better off the country is.

As for the politics...I get the need for any President to be seen doing something and honestly I'm not above scoring a few political points. I just think it's dangerous in the long term for conservatives to be seen saying, "Oh my, something terrible happened. Where are the feds? Why aren't the feds doing more?"

Added: Just to be clear, the double standard is as infuriating as it is predictable. Someone on Twitter asked last week when this officially becomes Obama's Katrina. My response was I don't think Katrina was Bush's Katrina but a single standard would be nice.

3 I'm not conflicted.  The entire administration, top-down, blew it off.

The feds are so eager to get in and regulate stuff like this (which on level I believe is appropriate) but they then behave "hands off" when the crisis hits?

Obama is more responsible for this mess than Bush ever was about Katrina.

6 "This is BPs mess and they and others in the industry are best suited to deal with the immediate problem. The best thing the government can do in these cases is get out of the way..."

That was only true for Obama while the oil was still gushing and fish, birds, and cute little sea otters were dying by the score on TV.

Now that there is some success in stopping the leak you can bet he will be all over the situation like a cheap suit.

7 Barbarian, with all of the gas coming out of that well - it would look like a giant fart breaching the surface -- might even make a bubble given all of the sulficants in the water.

President BlameBush can crow all he wants, but when you've lost James Carville well.......that's it.

That being said, I think another reason that the Pres did nothing is because he really hates the Republican States. Anyone else noticing a trend here?

Did'nt help Tennessee, Arizona, CT or Louisisana. What do these states have in common? Republican Governors.

I hope nothing bad happens in Jersey

10 3 Difference is: This affects the coastal areas and the fishing. Who lives on the coast? Who fishes? Are their any "low income" areas directly affected? Do the people affected already have victim status? Why help them? If Obama makes sure they get the stuff they need to stop the oil, will these people love him?

Posted by: dagny at May 27, 2010 08:39 AM (7Kl+J)

11 Yeah, I didn't like the double standard when libs did it. Either POTUS is all powerful and can be blamed when shit fucks up somewhere, or he can't. If he blame Bush for a hurricane, we can blame Obama for the oil well. I don't blame W for the hurricane, and I don't blame Obama for the oil well. The whole "we feel your pain" Presidential theater always pisses me off. If Obama said something like  "Look, BP has every reason to clean this up, it's costing them millions in lost revenue. The government has every reason to get this cleaned up. Everyone is working as hard as they can. Let's all just take a deep breath, and pray that we get this problem fixed soon." Some straight talk from a politician would be refreshing.

What pisses me off is him not attending the service. Those men are lost forever to the sea, and like the miners entombed beneath a billion tons of rock, they do an extraordinarily dangerous job so that the country and the world can function. They deserve a little recognition, a little respect. If I were a cynic I'd say that Obama cares more about good union coal miners then oilmen who work for companies his base considers to be one of the sources of evil in the universe.

12  Are their any "low income" areas directly affected? By that I meant non-redneck more urban pop.

13 The dems get a hard on everytime a republican gets caught with his pants down. Now we get to get one when their president can't control the weather, oceans, et al.

Posted by: dagny at May 27, 2010 08:41 AM (7Kl+J)

14 Britt, I don't blame him for the accident. I do blame him for having the Feds get in the way of an effective response. Requiring well understood mitigation procedures to go thru a federal environmental review in the face of a crisis is on him.

15 The politics are simple, the federal government is incompetent. -- It was designed to be incompetent, thank god.

I call BS on your 'what could a president do anyhow' defense.

The first thing I thought as soon as I heard of the leaking oil well was "NUKE IT" , collapse that thing.

It is the President's job to defend our borders - that's not just from enemy people, but also from that oil.  I can't believe that on day one the Feds didn't already have two dozen plans in place and ready to go to stop that thing.

It wasn't up to BP to stop it, well, in a way it was, but after the first day it became the federal government's job to protect our coast and they failed, MOST MISERABLY.

20 “He was sure there for the coal miners in West Virginia; he spoke at their funerals. That juxtaposition can’t be good.”

The miners belonged to a union and BP doesn't so they don't rate any self-aggrandizing speech from the "One"

How many political points would have been spent for the government to just keep people up to speed on goings-on? It would seem that there would be some gain (for government in general, for this administration in particular) had they said what measures were being taken and why, what measures weren't being taken and why not, etc.

"Where are the feds?" Yeah, not a good question to ask rhetorically, but literally -- Where are they? -- is fair and constructive.

Wow what a scunmbag Obama is.

After receiving the news the "Top Kill" has worked - he led off with "We have been telling BP what to do since day 1"

Funny - the past 35 days they were blaming BP.

Isnt that convenient...

Glad even the WH press corps is hammering him, led off with "why did it take you so long", they arent buying the bullshit.

Don't let the Klingon anywhere near the gulf, or oil supplies!  Remember, the moon Rurapente blew up, from overmining and lack of safety standards. Can't let that happen here on earth.

Okay, when cutting through red tape is the main thing a president can and should do, then cutting through red tape is not somehow too much to ask, even from a Democrat.

And I think you're underestimating how much that matters.  The Corner had a post from someone in the know:  when Katrina disrupted drilling and pipelines in the gulf, Bush promptly suspended normal regulations to let private actors fix the problems fast.  (And he was on the phone with them behind the scenes making sure they got what they needed, he just didn't brag about it in press conferences.)  Obama not only won't do that, his administration is actively dragging its feet on normal permitting as in Louisiana.  That's not an act of good faith, or even of neutrality.

Just heard on the news, Obama: "From the beginning of the crisis, the federal government has been in charge of the relief effort". It has begun.

28 "Where are the feds? Why aren't the feds doing more?"

A better question, in my mind, is "Why are the feds blocking every serious attempt by the states to at least mitigate the spill, so they can run environmental impact studies on the potential fixes, when they know how bad slicks just hitting the shore can be?"

Also, LOL, Obama just blamed deep-sea drilling in the gulf on us having literally no land or shallow-shelf reserves.

29 This is how politics works, as soon as a solution becomes apparent, the Big Boss Man shows up to take credit for it.  Until then it isn't a problem worth talking about.

Sorta like the FBI's most wanted list, they wouldn't put anyone on there until they were close to catching him.

31 He takes credit now it's done! Powerful leadership! Incredibly smart! All along his plan was to do nothing . It was his "Let 'em eat cake" moment - thinking they want offshore drilling. Well here is what they will get. They will be begging for Obama to come to their rescue! Events got a tiny bit ahead of his thinking!

34 Renee Sharp, the California director of the Washington-based Environmental Working Group, cheap wholesale also mentioned she hoped the law would dissuade shoppers from acquiring fairly higher radiation phones till their impact on the human body is totally understood. The advocacy group offered reports and other counsel towards city's Department from the Atmosphere as they developed the policy. "We're also hoping it will spur greater debate about no matter whether the latest federal standards are satisfactory or not," Sharp said. "We certainly don't feel that men and women aren't planning to acquire cellular mobile phones as a result of radiation." Market officials wouldn't speculate about the influence to their business, cheap cell phones but a lot of the nation's most common mobile cell phones have relatively higher SAR levels. This really is due to the fact many of those popular cell phones are wise cell phones, which have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth receivers, as well as basic cellular capability, that add to their total SAR rating, according to Walls. Below the law, larger chains could have to spot SAR notices beginning in February, whilst other retailers will have right up until 2012. Though the supervisors were largely unanimous, reaction outside of City Hall and across the nation was mixed.
