Triage: Desperate Democrats Begin Writing Off Most Vulnerable Members
— Ace

I wrote about this a little while ago. Dick Morris had written that Democrats have to make the same choice as an ER surgeon: Do you try to save the limb, or abandon the limb and try to save the patient?

As Democrats brace for a November wave that threatens their control of the House, party leaders are preparing a brutal triage of their own members in hopes of saving enough seats to keep a slim grip on the majority.

In the next two weeks, Democratic leaders will review new polls and other data that show whether vulnerable incumbents have a path to victory. If not, the party is poised to redirect money to concentrate on trying to protect up to two dozen lawmakers who appear to be in the strongest position to fend off their challengers.

But how serious are the Democrats? In Morris' assessment, they pretty much have to give up trying to defend, say, their 30 most vulnerable seats. Those, Morris suggests, are simply gone.

Their limited resources (they have money, more than us, but resources are always limited) should be directed instead to, say, saving the next most vulnerable 30 seats.

If Democrats attempt too ambitious a firewall -- that is, they give up on only the ten or fifteen most vulnerable seats, but still attempt to maintain their majority -- they will end up diverting money to seats that can't be won, and, critically, diverting it away from those seats which could be won, with great effort.

On the other hand, Patrick Ishmael at Hot Air has found that in his analysis the GOP itself isn't being very aggressive -- it's focusing on the 30 most vulnerable Democrats, whereas an aggressive, confident strategy would be to give little money to those candidate (just assume they're going to win and can win on their own) and target seats 31-60.

Thanks to rdbrewer.

My question, too.

Some Dems are already changing their tune on the Traitor-in-Chief's regime. Sadly, some voters will buy their conversion, believing it will last longer than election day.

My fondest hope is that the Dems will go deeply into debt defending every seat, and face January, 2011 broke and trivialized in Congress.

Reality suggests that a mixture of voter apathy, lies, Osama Oboma's dwindling but still-strong influence, the media and ACORN will see them emerging from the elections still in control of Congress.

And they're saying that Obama is adding more fundraising to his schedule in the coming weeks.

Hot damn the next seven weeks may be more enjoyable than 11/2 itself. How many Dems are going to pull a Feingold and find they have other more pressing commitments as O rolls into their town?

10 The RNC could save some money by putting together a single ad that goes after the dems where they are the most vunerable; Obama association, economy, and health care. I'm not sure they even have to promote their own candidate, they only have to make sure that all dems are sufficiently linked to the present disaster.

-----------------
Depends on the website. For stealing things from Youtube, I run youtube-dl on my trusty NetBSD box.

There are also web pages that let you grab the video and download; you give it the URL of the page containing the video and it sucks out the video and gives you a button you can click to download it. Been a while since I used any of 'em, so I don't recall the name; you could always google "save streaming video" or somesuch.

In fairness, ace,  the Repub establishment has one thing only in mind: it wants to keep the world safe for fatcat, do-nothing hack  pols like those it has stuffed into Congress. Their major talking point is that they are registered as "Rs," not that they have any ideas worth paying attention to. It's the "Poppin' Fresh" party, more eager to make friends and not offend anyone than work for a better America.

This is fostered by pathetic cheerleaders like Hannity, who clings to the coattails of Newt, a failed lump of protoplasm.

Ultimately, there should be no room in the GOP for wastes of air and food like Mitch McConnell, whose sole goal is to stay in office and suck the public teat.

We can't broom all the moderates right now, of course, but we can at least take the most egregious of them off life support and make room for newcomers who understand smaller, less-expensive government and patriotism.

Posted by: Steve (aka Ed Snate) I keep shortcut links to my brower(s) cache on my desktop. If I watch a streamed video that I like, I can usually find a copy of it in the cache. Just assume that that very large file with the recent time is that video (since the cached file will probably not have a descriptive name or extension). You have to guess what the file format is - YouTube uses MP4. Utorrent is a effective and tiny and full featured bittorrent program. Doesn't even need an installation.

The Repubs need to establish a long-range plan that ensures this is the last "LOTE" election.

Conservative principles are better for America. We have to sell that notion to moderates and weak-kneed libs in a positive way, and offer/encourage candidates who talk the talk and walk the walk.

The economy is only part of our problem today, Lacey. Turning that around won't mean much if we continue to bow before terrorists and sacrifice security and sovereignty.

I'm not saying this should be the focus of all efforts, but would like to see some people brought into office who will take the difficult steps needed to punish criminal behavior on every level.

Posted by: MrScribbler at September 05, 2010 10:59 AM (Ulu3i)

33 It's even more triage-y than that.  Triage is a term that originated in battlefield medicine.  It refers to classifying the wounded into one of three categories: able to wait for treatment, saveable with immediate treatment, and so far gone that the only thing to do is give the poor bastard some morphine and hope he dies relatively quickly and painlessly.

Dems in safe seats are the first category;  Dems with a chance of fending off their GOP challengers are the second category;  and the third category are Dems whose defeat is inevitable, and who need to be thinking more about their next career than their campaigns.  Of course, the challenge for their party is convincing them to lie down and die quietly rather than insist loudly on receiving support with a share of the Party's resources.

It's not clear that the GOP has the funding to spread beyond the top 30.  We know that the RNC under the Man of Steele has been atrocious at fundraising (possibly because they've been atrocious at creating a message and agenda that deserves our hard-earned money).  The RNCC and NRSC may be a bit more flush.

I think the best thing would be for lots and lots of individuals to send a little money of their own to the 31-60 or 31-90 contenders, bypassing the allocators at the RNCC altogether.

63 To #7 poster There is nothing illegal about bit torrent software. for a comparison of software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_BitTorrent_clients For the original, and still developed software: http://www.bittorrent.com/ The legal issue is what you download, not the use of software. If you intend to download copyright infringing material you had better really read up on computer security and covering your tracks. This is non-trivial. You also really need to understand how bit torrent works, i.e., it is both a server and client software package. Lastly, it is not unheard of that copyright infringing torrents have been modified to include Trojans, root kits, and virus'. If you only wish to download copyright legit stuff, then you have no worries, otherwise you'd better take seriously your potential liability.

Here's the thing that baffles me to no end: Steele was far from the baffoon he has become now when he was in Maryland. As chair of the Republican Party in Maryland in the late 90's/early 2000's, he was quite competant. (Granted, the bar is low for a MDGOP chair) He had a fairly good term as LG and in his Senate race in '06 (which I actually think he would have won in any other year), he did quite well in the debates. I've seen the man give speeches, he can be very articulate in conveying a conservative argument. He's a very bright guy.

Which is why I cannot understand what happened to him the moment he became RNC chair that turned him into the gaffe-o-matic he is now.

72 O/T but kinda funny: Palestinian Authority President Abbas has grown a pair and is standing up... to Iran.

Palestinians to Iran: Mind Your Own Business

The Palestinian Authority has taken a stand against Iran, after the Islamic Republic criticized the PA for relaunching direct talks with Israel, according to official PA news agency Wafa.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, reportedly said that Ahmadinejad "does not represent the Iranian people, forged elections, suppresses the Iranian people and stole the authority. [He] is not entitled to talk about Palestine, or the president of Palestine."

"President Abu Mazen [Abbas] is the elected president of free and fair elections in which more than two thousand international observers [participated]," Abu Rudeineh said. "We have fought for Palestine and Jerusalem, and the Palestinian leadership has provided thousands of martyrs and tens of thousands wounded and prisoners."

"We did not repress our people, as did Iran led by Ahmadinejad," Abu Rudeineh added.

"We are defending our national rights and our national interest, and the President and the Palestinian leadership and the PLO are the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, who knows how to defend their rights and will not allow anyone to undermine the national president or the legitimacy of the Palestine Liberation Organization," he said.

Obama got elected.  I just think Steele doesn't have it in his heart to oppose the "historical" presidency.  This is why I think the RNC should quietly show him the door during late 2010/early 2011.

I really do think he bought into the Obama hype, thinking that he'd be a uniter and lead us into a new era of good feelings and Steele would be something of a loyal opposition.

That's the only thing I can think of.

"Some Dems are already changing their tune on the Traitor-in-Chief's regime. Sadly, some voters will buy their conversion, believing it will last longer than election day."

I very much doubt that.

People are pissed. Most of you all were already conservatives, most of the former lifelong dems I know are freaking livid at the 3 stooges.  Not only are they pissed that the 3 stooges have crammed down the stimulus, and most important, the DeathCare bill, which was the last straw, but they are pissed that these 3 stooges have driven out most centerist, conservative dems out of that now-disgusting party. Called us racists, etc.... heck most of us finally realised what identity politics meant, and the overuse of the race card.

And they are not repubs now -- they are registered indies, they cannot stand the repubs either, but they do have support for the Tea Party movement.  Stop spending, adhere to the founding principles of limited smaller govt, doesn't matter what party you are in!

These are socially moderate, but conservative in most other sense former dems.

and it works.

The Democrats will barricade themselves in their position, and then keep falling back and falling back as the URepublican-Hai press forward, over Helms Dike, against the wall, and as they break through the gates.  All will look lost.

And the Gandalf will arrive on Shadowfax leading an army and all will be well.

and then Barack will make  a series of television statements defending the Democratic Vision, as such.

VLC has all that crap built in so you just have one program to keep updated. There are places in the country where the democrats will still ride roughshod on the strength of the "D".  Driving through Rhode Island, there are only Democrat signs-- and they are big and they are on every major thoroughfare.

OTOH, Massachusetts has very little in the way of D signs, and lots of R signs.  Which is a big change from pervious cycles.  Usually in Mass it's about 35-65 on yard sign counts.

My point is, Pelosi's likely still a god in her district and happy to stay and be the same old bitch she always was.

The only one I know for sure that they throttle is bittorrent...real player doesn't use that...it's not to say that they can't identify video streams and slow them down though...it's very possible.

Generally, companies like Comcast who broadcast TV are the culprits behind the throttling...they want you to pay for cable and don't want video coming through their internet.

It's also not just you, it's the guy on the other end and how fast he can send it, so there are a lot of variables.

If we can figure out the smart game plan so can the RNC.  Steel isn't the only guy running the RNC.  There are a lot of smart people in that room.

They will use their limited resources where they will do the most good.  Rational for disbursement will include which democrat seat is most vulnerable,  how strong is our candidate, how big is our lead there, races tighten as election day approaches, will winners flip to losers due to embarassing revalations.  The ratio of money dispursement will change as election day approaches.

The Republicans are circling for the kill.  They are wary because a trapped and wounded adversary is still very dangerous.

Finally, don't worry about what they are doing.  Worry about what you are doing.  I sent the contact info from the 40 Seats
link to an apolitical friend who has finally decided to get involved. That's not much but it is something.  Do something constructive to help at every opportunity.  It empowers you.

Because a bacon-scented male version makes no sense (outside of certain neighborhoods of Los Angeles).  A mustard and pickle relish-scented version, by contrast, makes PERFECT sense -- especially if it also comes in chopped onion and sauerkraut varieties.

182 Then he was promoted  to his level of incompetence.

Posted by: toby928 at September 05, 2010 04:59 PM (S5YRY)

An engineer and business manager is trained to believe that problems have logical solutions and that those solutions will be implemented the way he planned them by the people in his organization following his orders to the letter.  That's a very dangerous way of thinking for a President, because the solutions a President must put into place largely depend on their success for the compliance of the American people, who don't take orders from the President.

This is one reason why the Keynesian stimulus of the Obama Presidency hasn't worked: the American people aren't dutifully spending their money in accordance with Christina Roemer's mathematical formula.  Instead, we're looking around us at high unemployment, low home valuations and anemic economic activity and thinking that this would be a good time to put aside whatever we can for the near-term economic pain that seems inevitable.

(This could also explain why the same Mitt Romney that rescued the Salt Lake City Olympics also put his faith in RomneyCare and in the idea that the people of Massachusetts would use it as it was designed without gaming it to their own advantage.)

183 "If we can figure out the smart game plan so can the RNC.  Steel isn't the only guy running the RNC.  There are a lot of smart people in that room."

The question isn't whether somebody there can *think of* the idea.  The question is whether that guy is listened to, or whether pressures and interests that have nothing to do with maximizing seat wins determine where the money goes.
