Uh-Oh: Stupak "Optimistic" Abortion Dispute Can Be Resolved
— Ace

Wonderful.

They're really going to do this, huh?

Rep. Bart Stupak said he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week in a quest for wording that would impose no new limits on abortion rights but also would not allow use of federal money for the procedure.

"I'm more optimistic than I was a week ago," Stupak said in an interview...

13 I wonder how many votes they think they are buying with ObamaCare. The GOP could try to run on getting rid of it, but it is more likely they will just claim they can administer it better. Pissed off financial conservatives, pissed off social conservatives, enthusiastic democratic voters getting freebies.

They may not be as stupid as we think.

Posted by: conscious and waiting with hammer and wooden stake at March 08, 2010 04:57 PM (Vu6sl)

29 Best case scenarioo - Stupak's playing nice with Pelousy, and is basing this "optimism" off something Steny said about address Stupak's concerns in a third bill (which won't ever get to the floor of the Senate), so he'll still be a no.

Worst case scenario  - Stupak is signaling that he wants a fig-leaf so he can go to his constituents saying that he fought for them and vote for it anyway.

At least in the end, there will be only chaos.

Wording on what?  Neither the House bill nor the Senate bill can be changed at this point.  Is he referring to wording on a new bill?  Fine.  Is that new bill going to get passed via reconciliation?  No chance in hell.  So what the f**k is he thinking??

45 I think this is a lot of bluffing and stalling. They don't have the votes yet and they're breaking arms trying to find them. I'm not saying it won't ultimately pass, because everyone one of these assholes has a price at which they can be bought, but right now they don't have the votes.  I would think that instead of tossing dates out of a week or two from now, that the minute they had the votes Pelosi would call for a vote.  I wish something would surface that would be so serious they would know they couldn't overcome it and just kill this thing once and for all.  Geezus!

50 This is a weird statement. He said this during town halls in Michigan. It almost sounds like a platitude issued when someone is yelling at him. And, as mentioned above, wording on WHAT? The house is voting to pass the senate bill as it stands. Does this mean he is folding and expecting an amendment to the bill or that he thinks they will be starting over? Makes 0 sense.

Posted by: dagny at March 08, 2010 05:08 PM (xTpw2)

51 If Stupak caves and votes for Obamacare based on promises from Nancy, then he's a damned fool.  Once this thing is law, Obama and Pelosi will do everything they can to ensure funding for abortion is restored.  That's assuming they're not just lying to get his vote and don't have any intention of keeping their promises.

63 52 Good point. It's just a remark at a townhall--maybe an off the cuff remark. I don't see how they can reach a compromise, considering it's just an up or down vote on the Senate bill--Pelosi can't change a damned thing on this first vote. The House Dems will try to change the Senate bill later through reconciliation, but does anybody think Stupak's amendment could survive in either the House or the Senate once the big bill is already on the President's desk? That's if the parliamentarian even allows changes to the abortion aspect, considering it's not directly related to the budget.

Posted by: Rahm Emmanuel at March 08, 2010 05:12 PM (cxGtL)

64 Wording in what? You can't change a word or it must go back to the Senate and the Senate bill is very clear about forcing insurance companies to cover abortion.

Actually I'm not to concerned. The House has to vote on the Senate bill as is. They can't make any changes. If they make a change it isn't the same bill and there isn't anything to send to Obama. So he has to be betting that they will take up his amendment in reconcilliation. The thing is, the Stupak amendment was offered when the Senate was putting together their bill and was rejected.

So either Stupak caves completely or he has to trust that after the bill is passed the Senate would take up an amendment they have already rejected and put it in reconcilliation. So he has a choice, if he supports this bill, to either become a sell out and support it without his amendment, or watch the Senate not take it up and look like a sucker for agreeing to it.

There are a few good ones, but most are timid. We will win in the end but it is a constant fight and thankfully with sites like this one, humor tempers angst.

3.  After a year or two of media attacks like this, announce that the Boomers get minimal care (the greedy bastards) and anyone who doesn't live according to Zeke Emanuel's protocol gets no treatment.

179 Dude,
If your hope is based on the dems being honorable or keeping their word, then yes, we are screwed.  At this point, the dems are bluffing and trying to get the votes.  The infighting is vicious:  1) all the people who didn't get their own Louisiana purchase ARE pissed and ripping each other apart, 2) there are not enough patronage gigs for all the lowly pols who will get booted out, and 3) after being screwed on cap and tax and other risky votes, the House refuses to trust the Senate not to screw them over.  But, I counting on the big ego, self-serving dems to be the spoilers.  All they need is a bit of cover to justify turning on Jughead because it will destroy Jughead's presidency.  I agree with Andy McCarthy's analysis that the dems are playing for the long term and have already factored in the November losses.   I'm just not sure that the lowly dems are ready to be the sacrificial goats for Pelosi and Reid.  Also, the pundits keep going on that the dems need to pass something to get health care off the table.  But, passing it won't take it off the table.  The republicans are going to make it front and center for November elections.

However, I disagree with McCarthy that the republicans don't have the guts to repeal it.  Yes, in general the republicans are gutless and generally  wuss out.    However, the anger of the Tea Partiers and the average America has reached the boiling point.   The smart republicans get that the rage will be turned toward them if they don't repeal health care. The republicans will use health care as an issue to pummel Jughead until 2012.   Further, it's not going to be all sunshine and roses if it passes.  Unemployment will still be high, businesses are contracting, the Bush tax cuts will expire and every city, county and state will be trying to steal more money from the taxpayers.  Unfunded pensions are going to take down lots of local governments. The American people have already decided that the dems need to be destroyed and will face the full force of our wrath.  The only question is do we need to destroy the republicans, too?  That question will be answered in 2011 and 2012.

OK, I voted my conscience, stayed true to my principles, stayed true to the beliefs of this district, could I vote for healthcare? Yes I still could.”

I heard DeMint (before he started hearting Lindsey Graham) say that once this is passed, it will be nearly impossible to repeal.  I used to trust DeMint, so I guess that's prob'ly true.

I see a couple scenarios.  We're broke.  Eventually they'd stop everything anyway and go for total control.  That's when the revolution starts and we re-peg to the original constitution and lock these goofballs up forever after draining their bank accts and assets to pay toward whatever we need to get a barebones govt up and running again.

Scenario 2 -- If we want to go for repeal post-Zero and have an amenable president, we just have to make private, pay-for-service healthcare SO much better than Zerocare (which shouldn't be hard!), everyone will want to opt out.   Zerocare is going to be nothing but shiite.  Make a deal with the taxpayer.  You opt out of it, you also opt out of the taxes that pay for it.

That leaves only the diehard welfare cases, elderly and infirm to deal with.  We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I'm not going all hide in my bunker yet.  This thing has had more twists and turns than any legislation I have ever seen.  I am going to a neighboring congressman's district and let him know I will actively work against him in his district if he votes for this piece of communist shit.

That resigning Rep. Massa may be willing to spill more beans on the Dems to hang them.  Another scandal or two from good investigative journalists bloggers could force out a couple more.  Hell another one could drop dead and change the mix.  This roller coaster ride isn't over.

When government healthcare was defeated in the 90's Boehner told me we almost lost our country.  The Republicans know what the stakes are.  Don't throw in the towel just yet.

1.  Gin up resentment of anyone over 40 (the Boomers). Tar them as greedy and irresponsible.
2.  Massive public media campaign on obesity,  smoking,  exercise,  drinking, etc.
Idea firmly planted that people who don't live correctly are irresponsible and are the ones who have most of the illnesses.
3.  After a year or two of media attacks like this, announce that the Boomers get minimal care (the greedy bastards) and anyone who doesn't live according to Zeke Emanuel's protocol gets no treatment.

Voila!   This is Obamacare:  old people and sinners die.   I wouldn't be surprised to find out they outlaw painkillers.  Obama hates us and probably is more like Sean Penn than we know.

_____

Miss Marple, they are working on that.  And many younger people seem very amenable to blaming the baby boomers, and making them "pay."

190 People are way, way, way overreacting and reading way too much into this.  How in the hell does he think he will get his language through the Senate?  He is being optimistic, but that could mean anything.  He is a Democrat.  He is not going to say "this bill has no fucking way of passing" forever.    And those who think Stupak is gullible enough to take the reassurances of the Senate concerning this issue, you might want to go back and listen to the interviews he has given over the past week concerning this bill.  Specifically, listen to the parts about how he doesn't trust the Senate and how there is no way he will vote first for the Senate bill first.  Does that really sound like a man who is willing to trust Harry Reid to get a bill with the language he wants through the Senate?

There is another way to fight this.
If Obama signs this tax-payer funded deficit buster into law, WE fight it on a state to state level.  We force local representatives to make sure it cannot be enacted within each state - one at a time.------------

lawsuits, class action suit, you name it.. They vote for this, expect to lost not just your job in Washignton but your personal fortunes defending yourselfves. If frivolous lawsuits and twinkie defenses can win, so can 250 million lawsuits filed against every elected official that votes for this.

200 "Once you put the entitlements in there's no getting rid of them." 1) History of entitlements has not been a long one...say 100 years? Perhaps we have not seen all permutations of what is or is not possible. 2) Wouldn't communism be considered the ultimate entitlement society? That didn't work out. 3) We have had reforms of entitlement programs, welfare, tax cuts, SS reform. I don't think its too crazy. I think it will happen when both parties realize the game is really up. Actually, that means the Dems, as they are the ones who can really fire up the "the GOP wants to kill Old People" charges it seems.

yeah. you have to wonder what his motivation is making this statement publically. If he really was looking for his own cornhusker kickback-he would not say it openly, it would be done behind closed doors by all. if he switched-no matter what his excuse/reason is-he knows he is history. There is no wiggling out of it for a single Dem.

I'll tell ya, if i was him and had to put up with pelosi's arm twisting, i'd throw it out there and see what they try to bribe me with-all done infront of cameras. Let the public see yet another bribe given by Obama, Pelosi and Reid and then say thanks but no thanks. The 3 stooges really don't need any help looking foolish and corrupt infront of the world. They are doing a fine job of it all by themselves.

203 shizuki:  What do these people have in common?

Ted Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Carl Levin, Chris Dodd.

All were born before 1945.  None of them are Boomers.

Most of the the things that have the country in a mess (Medicare,  Social Security, Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac) were things instituted when I ( myself a Boomer) wasn't even born,  or when I was a young girl.

Why do you hate Boomers?  We didn't create these things.   I would like to know why you hate Boomers so much.   If you have issues with your parents,  that is a personal problem and not something to base public policy on.

I'm a boomer and I think we're the most hubris-immersed fucked up generation ever.  The sixties were the most overrated decade ever yet you have large segments of boomers remembering them as some Elysian fields of enlightenment instead of a time when stand-up people were shit on and worthless deadbeats became objects of reverence.  Of course there are exceptions to this, including most morons, but the cost of entitlements for the assholes that never did a fucking thing to plan for their future will be huge.  I wouldn't blame the generations that will have to foot the bill to say fuck them all and pull the plug on them.  But the whiny shitheads won't go quietly.

205 Seeing that power line video reminded me of the coolest thing I have seen like that.  Unfortunately, it was in my yard.  My power comes from a pole that's diagonally across the street.  When added to my house being back from the corner on that side, it adds up to a long run, so there is an intermediate pole in the corner of my yard.  The people who owned the house before us planted a tree to hide the pole.

A couple of years ago, the power went out and there was an intense white light.  I went outside and found that the tree had been rubbing on the line and had worn off the insulation.  The line started a small arc to the tree which quickly burned through the line.  The short end of the line still connected to the pole then arced big time to the tree.  It was about a two-foot long stream of brilliant white light.  I called the electric company and the fire department (the tree was starting to smoke.)  IT took a full five minutes before the arc finally overloaded the circuit breaker and tripped it off.  It was very exciting 5 minutes.

207 If you have been a member of a club that has had a particular agenda for decades, then you support that agenda.  The dems have been dedicated to killing babies, unborn and born, for decades.  Stupak is a member of that political party, has voted for funding for planned parenthood, an abortion industry if ever there was one, and by being a democrat, is a supporter of abortion.  I'm sure he was just waiting for the right price.

Because people who drop acid at Woodstock in the Sixties and then become school principals who expel kids for Tylenol possession kind of suck. You were libertines in your youth and you're petty little neo-Puritan tyrants today.

Oh, and my parents aren't Boomers, so your dime-store psychoanalysis sucks. Try again.
