UK Election Results: Chaos
— DrewM

The people of the UK voted and decided they pretty much don't like anyone.

The Conservatives picked up around 90 108 seats but they had so few seats after so many years of Labour rule even picking up that many seats wasn't enough to get them an outright majority. Labour has lost about 80 100 seats (there are still a handful of outstanding seats to be awarded). The Liberal Democrats seem to have about the same number of seats with 57 so far (actually, they lost 5 seats).

So at this point it looks like the Conservatives have 304, Labour 257 and Liberal Democrats 57 and a handful of minor parties (Scottish, Irish, Welsh based parties and the Greens even won one) have 28. It takes 326 to get a majority.

What happens now? Let's make a deal!

Despite the fact he's led his party to a historic defeat, as sitting Prime Minister Gordon Prime Minister gets first shot at forming a government. Technically his 'term' doesn't end and he doesn't need to go to the Queen. As long as he can produce a majority on "The Queen's Speech", he stays Prime Minister until he resigns or losses a vote of no-confidence in the House.

If he can't produce that majority, he will resign and the Conservatives, under David Cameron will get the chance to form a government.

Right now the fight is over how realistic it is for a 'coalition of the losers' (Labour and the Lib Dems) to form a government. It's kind of like 2000 when Gore won the popular vote but Bush won the electoral vote.

If Brown can't get a deal together Cameron will have the chance to either form a formal coalition with the Lib Dems or run a minority government. The minority government route means he either cuts deals with another party or parties to vote with them on a few key votes or promises to at least abstain on them (which would give Conservatives the pluralities they need in the Commons).

Right now the man of the hour is Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Dems. He was thought to have been the guy people thought won the first debate and that his party would surge. There was talk they would get in the neighborhood of 100 sets. Not so much.

Who will Clegg go with?

During the election campaign, leader Nick Clegg repeatedly said the party with the "biggest mandate" should get the right to govern.

Speaking on Friday morning, he said that he "stuck" by that position and that the Conservatives, having won the most seats and votes, should have first right to try and form a government in the "national interest".

Many commentators have interpreted his comments as suggesting he would not "prop-up" a government led by Mr Brown even though his predecessor Lord Ashdown has suggested his party is "too far apart" from the Conservatives.

The LibDems big meta issue is election reform. They want to do away with the UK's "First Past the Pole" system and towards proportional representation. On one hand a hung Parliament helps to get people thinking about reform but if people don't like the uncertainty it's producing, well this kind of backroom negotiating is a feature not a bug of a proportional representation type system.

Bottom line, someone will wind up forming a government and then they will likely wind up doing it all again later this year or early next.

All I can think of while watching this....Thank you James Madison!

Also...The exit poll looked a little shaky early on but it was vindicated by the end of things.

It was amusing to watch the BBC feed last night. All the analysts were befuddled by the results. The Conservatives released a list of their targets from 'most likely to take' to 'least likely'. They lost a fair number of the supposed low hanging fruit but made up for it by winning seats where they needed a big upset.

Greece, Britain and the rest of the piigs of the Eurozone should be an example to us for what happens to countries when the takers start taking more than the givers are able to give.

Europeans have had more than a half century to destroy their economies with socialism.  In this country, because our leftists are so convinced of their superiority at being the best socialists evah, the trip will be a lot shorter but the end will be the same - takers grow exponentially as givers are exhausted and outflow cannot exceed inflow - period.

18 Actually, nevergiveup, it's amazing how well our system does work.  I really did think Obama Health Control was going down the tubes for the single fact that Congressmen are elected independently.  In fact, it's an interesting intellectual exercise to think about what would have happened if Senators were appointed as originally in the Constitution.  (Don't get too excited, appointed Republican Senators are much more likely to be Cornyns than Coburns.  Bringing pork to the state would be job 1.)

Nonetheless, Obama's really been stymied despite huge majorities and what representation the GOP has is enough to slow things down so that they can't be rammed through.  This tends to make the public a little testy.

A government incapable of doing anything would have been a really awesome thing to have around here a few months back.  Total paralysis would be WAAAAAYYY better than what we have suffered.  At least there would have been no health care bill, and businesses could rest assured that the status quo would not be overturned.  Long live gridlock!

These days every government solution just makes things worse.  Even if we win in the next cycle, I'm not convinced that the Reps will do enough RINO elimination to make them totally safe to give power to.

26 Its too bad there there really isn't a ideologically conservative party still remaining in Britain so people could vote for real reform to the bloated socialist system. Although I might be giving the citizen of Britain way too much credit, chances are by now their too addicted to being on the dole. If they voted for reform then they couldn't stay on the couch all day watching Dr. Who with a tin of crisps. This is America's future if the people keep voting for the party that promises them the most stuff.

28 Gives you an indication of how far the Tories had to climb that they swung over 15% of the Parliament in their direction and still couldn't get to 326. Then again, we could quadruple the number of Republicans (nominal ones, at that) in the MA House of Representatives and still be about 5-short of a majority. Just some perspective, that.

31 @27 - true, Drew. I was over in the UK in March - the Tories were seriously debating whether to propose lowering the VAT from 18% to something like 17.25%. And from the tenor of the debate you'd have thought they had proposed an outright repeal of the levy. The Brits, they are rather firmly bonded to their crumbling welfare state, what what.

41 Its too bad there there really isn't a ideologically conservative party still remaining in Britain so people could vote for real reform to the bloated socialist system.

The nearest they have to that, UKIP, got about a million votes (which is a lot), but no seats, because unbought, ideological constituencies are scattered. That's why we have blue-dot/red-field electoral maps here, too; the GOP, shitty as it is, is more principled than the Ds are, so they don't have high-population "strongholds".

UKIP will never win a seat. No American-style conservative party can, anywhere in Europe. They can (and will) go Nazi again, but they can't go Jefferson, unless there's an unprecedented revolution. It can't happen by vote. Democracy is the antithesis of liberty.

They're smart, well educated, sharp - and absolutely dedicated statists to a person (with the perhaps odd exception who would still be rather to the left of Susan Collins). Their entire welfare system - starting with the NHS - is imploding under its own weight and they marvel as to our taking so long to duplicate their "marvelous, wonderful national health system" here in the US. And 3-inches of snow shuts the entire country down. Hard to believe Churchill and Thatcher came from this stock.

57 Either the UKIP or the BNP would be better than what they have now, in terms of what is best for Britain as a nation.  UKIP would have very little down side at all, and even if the BNP got in I doubt the "worst" of their ideological positions would become law.  Though even if the BNP got every wet dream of theirs passed into law, it would STILL be better, overall, than the current crop of vermin.  With either of those two parties in place and powerful enough to affect change, the Brits would have some hope.  Maybe not for perfection, but at least for national/cultural survival.

Skippy 82: History, mostly. The Liberals were a free-market / do-gooder party until the First World War. One of the great ideas the Liberals had, though, was to open up the franchise and to allow trade unions; so there came to be a "free stuff!!1" party from the latter. That would be Labour. The Liberals continued their progress toward suicide by screwing up so bad in the Great Chicken-Fucking, 1914-18. The Liberals got left with a bunch of tea-sipping middle-class old ladies who thought the Conservatives were not nice enough. They'd been raking in 25% of the vote and 10% of the Parliament ever since.

Since Blair, Labour is now an ideological mess and the Liberals have decided to morph into the "even MORE free stuff!!1" party. So no, there's no difference anymore.

I've never understood something: what exactly is the major difference between the Labour and Liberal Democrat parties anyway?

The Liberals used to be the traditional opposition to the Tories until about 1910-1920. The Liberals cracked up over (1) Home Rule for Ireland, (2) The general chaos of World War One, (3) the rise of socialist madness. But given that the parliamentary system generally allows 3rd parties unlike our presidential/congressional system that basically squenches them, they hung on as a small party.

The Liberal Party got new life when the Labour Party went full blown Communist in the 1980's, disgruntled and still patriotic Labourites defected (not unlike the "Boll Weevil" and "Blue Dog" Southern Democrats in the USA) and for a time it looked like it would become the #2 opposition party to the Tories.

Then Tony "NuLabour" Blair purged the communists from the party and basically went "nanny state but still tolerating the Thatcherite free market so we can tax it for out nanny state programs and welfare handout vote buys."

89 Maybe Cameron was trying to run an empty shirt candidacy, much like Obama did. The word hope and change used over and over with no context and also hoping that dislike of Labour, just like the dislike of Bush in the last election, would push him over the top. Though it seems he over looked one of the most important ingredients to Obama's win, a near worshiping MSM that was eager to shill every chance they could.

93 I saw that, Fritz. What stunned me is that the interbreeding seems to have happened in the Near East and not in Europe. Europe's where the Neanderthal build would have been most helpful. As evidence, they're saying that the 4% of the European genome which is Neanderthal is not for anything useful. If they'd hooked up in Europe, that 4% would be clustered around white skin, large frames, body hair etc., which we Europeans need because it's fucking cold and the bloody Alps are in the way of migrating south.

Labour is less radical than the Lib Dems. The Lib Dems favourite book is John Stuart Mill's On Liberty, & they are primarily advocates of social liberalism. Other than that, they spend a majority of their time fighting both main parties. From what I've seen from PMQs, they're all about advocating a welfare state & that govt is corrupt in that it steals from the average John Smith.

Pretty much; that, & electoral reform was a popular issue in certain areas of the UK. But Cameron chose to ignore the advice of some of his fellow MPs & be more like Labour. He's been repeatedly raked over the coals since last night due to his incompetence against Brown.

I think this also puts the nail in the coffin of  Brown being more effective than Blair, for all his supposed charms. Also shows the inefficiency of having a 3-party system. If we tried that here, we would at least have a leader, but it would throw a wrench in the entire system. Everything would be all about power-broking.

Apparently this has been a subject of debate for some time. There were three ideas of why the Neanderthals disappeared:
1. They were not able to adapt a la the dinosaurs (neanderthals were "f**ked up")
2. They were wiped out by cro-magnons (neanderthals were "f**ked over")
3. They mated with the cro-magnons (neanderthals were literally f**ked)

122 Blair never should have agreed to allow Brown to take-over. AS for the extent of a long-term deal, IDK, but I wish he had allowed for someone else. Even Jack Straw would have been better than Brown.

Then we have the newer Lib Dem leader. Preferred Kennedy, who got ousted. He made some mistakes, but it didn't matter. It's all a Britain's Got Talent situation. Just look at Cameron.

The Tories haven't had a great leader since Thatcher. PM Blair rhetorically & politically slaughtered all their leaders from 1997-2007, & they pretty much let him. Of course, when your strategy is "anyone but Blair" & you become more liberal than New Labour on some issues, it all makes sense.

Then we have all the nationalistic Welsh, Scottish, & Northern Irish parties, & it's an disaster. They all want devolution & independence whilst simultaneously relying on money from England.

142 don't have time to join the eeyores/Glenn Beck type shouting "Who cares?! They're screwed either way!" so i'll get to the points:

So at this point it looks like the Conservatives have 304, Labour 257 and Liberal Democrats 57 and a handful of minor parties (Scottish, Irish, Welsh based parties and the Greens even won one) have 28. It takes 326 to get a majority.

yeah sounds like a no common sense idea, if you have more seats you should have the power, but the British Parliamentary system needs reform on how their government comes to be, it has for a long time

If Brown can't get a deal together Cameron will have the chance to either form a formal coalition with the Lib Dems or run a minority government. The minority government route means he either cuts deals with another party or parties to vote with them on a few key votes or promises to at least abstain on them (which would give Conservatives the pluralities they need in the Commons).

will probably end up in another election in the next year where labour will take even more hits, they're so unpopular in Britian right now even the lefty journalists are being brutal on them

All I can think of while watching this....Thank you James Madison!

all I can think is, another blow to Beck's wishful 3rd party thinking

It's kind of like 2000 when Gore won the popular vote but Bush won the electoral vote.

but this is more confusing then that, because in that election Gore won more votes then Bush nationwide, Bush just so happen to win more states then Gore to win the electoral college and thus the election (something libs brought about themselves by rushing to be crumbled up together in parts of the country during the 80s and costing them that election by doing so); here there is a clear win in seats AND popular vote

Blair was a good debater in the house of commons and enjoyed popularity as PM but Brown came in, embarrassed himself in the debates, and polls as the worst PM, one poll asked British citizens to rank PMs, the top 3 were 1. Churchill, 2. Attlee, 3. Around the world, America is daddy.  America tells the rest of the world that they can't eat ice cream before dinner, that they can't play ball in the house, that they have to be home by 10.

And the rest of the world whines and complains about it because they have no responsibilities, so they can vent their anger about all of their failures at America.

actually he took back power 5 years later, don't forget people loved FDR back in the 40s and now his legacy has taken big hits, people were unsure about Reagan during his entire time in office polling the most unsures by any President even at the height of his popularity, now he's battling Washington and Lincoln in polls for Best President, Eisenhower was sent off as an average 2 termer now many people consider him a top 10 president, Dubya himself is making a comeback in his legacy, sometimes it takes time to really respect a leader's accomplishments; even Nixon w/ watergate destroying his legacy has seen a bit of a bump in looking at his sucessess; and the best example of this? Lincoln wasn't a popular President for most of his time in office in fact he had to add a dem to the ticket and change the name of his party in 1864 to get re-elected and that only happened after union victories boosted him towards victory

To be fair, from what I've read about that, Churchill didn't run the best campaign either.  He accused Attlee of wanting to behave like a dictator and said that Attlee would have to"to fall back on some form of a Gestapo" to impose socialism on Britian.

And the British public was tired, having suffered two World Wars in a short span of 30 years.  Really can't blame them for succumbing then to the lure of socialism.

Don;t know about the UK, but the Queen's representative in Canada, the Governor General, can intervene if there's a danger of a government unravelling.  She did it last year when the three opposition parties threatened a "coup" and she gave Parliament a "time-out" to cool off.  That was one of the best things she did.

You douchebags want to let Iran run the whole mideast ... because you're just that stupid and have that much enmity for the West.  I really wish you emotional basketcases would stop letting your issues with your fathers lead you to trying to destroy everything that reminds you of your fathers - our own society.  Go take some anti-psychotics and stay out of politics.  All you people do is destroy everything around you.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 07, 2010 01:04 PM (yfJ6g)

They really don't have a Constitution.  I know they like to say they do, but they don't.  They are really flying with an unlimited government and rules that can be changed on a whim.  They are close to a true democracy in that sense, with the supreme power really being in the whim of the voters and the whims of whomever controls parliament.  It's a pretty crappy system.

Are you kidding?  Iran's coming power over the middle east has nothing to do with Iraq, you blithering idiot.  BTW, did you know that Saddam INTENTIONALLY spilled 40,000,000 barrels of oil into the gulf and lit just about every single oil well in Kuwait on fire?  I would think that emotionally damaged enviro-wackos would have wanted his head on a stick.

Also, it's nice that you are endorsing the US' support of Iraq and Iran in fighting each other - trying to keep them even and occupied with killing as many of each other as they could.  That was a good policy.  But, after Saddam invaded Kuwait and did the above in his scorched-earth strategy while he was suffering one of the most humiliatiing military defeats in human history, it was clear to anyone with a brain (which leaves you out) that he could not be allowed to remain in control of one of the most strategically sensitive areas of thea world.  But it is surprising that the enviro-wackos weren't bothered by Saddam's enviro-terror and wanted him left in power.  Interesting, though we all know that cognitive dissonance is there the left lives.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at May 07, 2010 09:26 AM (5TNVe)

241 244 Well, they kind-of have one & they sort-of don't. It's mostly de facto. My understanding is that the Founders claimed that they were denied their rights under the English Constitution, rights which have been established through oral tradition & a few documents but not written in a united manner. Everything is based on parliamentary sovereignty & the rule of law.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at May 07, 2010 09:27 AM (Yq+qN)

242 The Prime Minister isn't an elective office, like being an MP is and an election doesn't end the position. It takes the loss of a no-confidence vote to 'end' a particular government.  At least in WW2, the king/queen then picks another minster to have a go at forming the new government. That's how Churchill got to be prime minister. I'm not sure if the rules have changed.

If a single party wins a majority, well then the old PM resigns and the new party forms a government just to speed things up. If they didn't, well the first vote would end things anyway.

I suppose if the queen called Brown in and told him to give it up, to let the Conservatives try and form a government he would probably have to do it, even if the letter of the law said he wouldn't have to. His own party might not want to put their chances on a flimsy coalition against the wishes of the country as a whole.

Posted by: Oldcat at May 07, 2010 09:27 AM (z1N6a)

243 253  It depends upon how they decide it. They have until the 25th of May to hash this whole thing out, that being the date of the Queen's speech (IMO). But Brown can be forced-out without a vote of no-confidence if Cameron & Clegg come to an understanding. If that occurs, he would be forced to resign.

Yes.  Which means that their government has no serious restrictions on its power - though the standing Executive (the royals) still has a final power (though unused).  But, this is what you get when you have to fashion a modern government around a permanent royal Executive.  Too much ad-hoc transfers of power ot the "legitmate" parliament and no real architecture for where it should go.  So, in the end they have no separation of powers and no limits.  Nasty stuff.  But, that's Europe for you.

Democrats want the same for us, here.  I got a kick out of the Dems holding "no-confidence" votes against Bush right after they won Congress.  What a bunch of dolts.  They don't even realize that "no-confidence" votes are totally meaningless in our system.  We have some truly dumb people in the dem party.  truly, spectaculary dumb ... and with daddy issues, too.

Yep.  Typical deceitful, hypocritical, America-hating libs.  They wanted Exxon execs hanged for the Valdez spill - even though Exxon wanted nothing more than getting all of their oil to market and being paid for it, but when Saddam attacks the Earth as he's being allowed to retreat, the libs say nothing - and for a spill over 4 times the size of the Valdez.  It's crazy.  And libs never talk about lighting the wells on fire.  They won't me smoke friggin' cigarettes anywhere and they are all into global warming, but the worst ecological disaster in history (done by an arab in the way that arabs always treat things) and libs are mum.

It's amazing, isn't it?

250 #254  - Yes, if the other two parties join, then in effect they can win a no-confidence vote at any time, so he would be forced to go give it up and resign.

Not really, but he did do a good job of keeping Iran in check.  That's why Ronnie Reagan was his buddy...he even forgave Saddam when he put a missile into one of our ships.

It is a nice change to see the Right discussing the Iraqi election that took place two months ago and still hasn't produced a government.

Posted by: snapdragon at May 07, 2010 09:45 AM (5Etcj)

252 1935 was PM Stanley Baldwin, but I can't find anything about a crisis. The BBC keeps referencing it as an instance of a sovereign getting involved in an election, though. IDK, I'm confused.

253 #263 Well the PM's party lost a lot of seats in 1935, but stayed in power - they sitll had a majority after the election. Wiki doesn't mention the king getting involved, and I don't see where he would need to. Plus the old guy died in January 1936.

Italy had something like 40 governments in 50 years after WWII.  So what?  That is part of the unstable nature of parliamentary systems.  But, you don't understand that.  You and your ilk are pushing for the same sort of shit, here, as you have no respect for our Constitution or the architecture of American governance, as you people have done nothing but shit all over it.

I guess the BBC is just casting about for comparisons. If I were in Labor's shoes, I think I'd rather the other guys be working with an ill-fitting tiny coalition government rather than me.
