— Geoff The BLS released the unemployment rate for August today, which didn't really change much from last month - 9.6% vs. July's 9.5%. That message of "nothing changed" is repeated throughout the report. Frankly, I was looking for something a little more interesting this month - I thought we'd end up at 9.8 or 9.9%. So I went through the stats trying to find out what was shoring up the employment rate.
And I found one thing that changed, and it had changed quite a bit. Turns out it's those damn part-timers who threw me off. The number of part-time employees ballooned by 730K during August - 330K of them forced into part time work by economic conditions. This brought the U-6 unemployment number up to 16.7% - an increase of 0.2 points from last month.
UPDATE: I hope it's obvious that swapping 3/4 of a million full time jobs for part time jobs is not a sign of an improving job market. And as some commenters have pointed out, the unemployment number is still ridiculously high and nothing to "yawn" about. The terrifying part is that the President is promising to do something about it. Mr. President? Please. Just. Stop.
That all said, here's your updated version of The Chart (don't forget that S. Weasel is selling The Chart on t-shirts, coffee mugs, and the like):

There's some grinning brain-dead dog-flogger on Fox right now saying the latest jobs news is "positive, and the reason the stock market is going up."
Mindless fucks like that guy (and Kudlow, Cramer and the rest of the clueless parasites) can go fuck themselves. It's cold and hungry out there for too many of us. If the policies of the Traitor-in-Chief's regime or his Muzzie terrorist pals don't kill us, the shitweasel stock-market leeches will.

That's where the "unexpectedly" catchphrase comes from. When are we going to start "expecting" these idiots to be wrong so we can stop saying "unexpectedly"?
When in history has a group that is almost never right about anything been held in such high esteem that whenever a pundit says, "a group of leading economists says..." to support their position, we all bow politely in reverence and nod compliance?
Keynesian Economics has been proven 100% WRONG every time it has been applied in the real world, but still we build statues to the guy. We may as well build statues to the Easter Bunny.

this summer it was difficult for college kids to get real jobs. They could get internships where they worked totally for free but real jobs were hard to come by. I'm not sure the part time jobs number will change because a lot of the part time workers are everyone's dad who lost their job and is stringing together several part time jobs to try to keep afloat.

A couple of points:
1) I say "yawner" because so few of the statistics changed from last month, and because the BLS report made for incredibly boring reading, not because the employment situation is acceptable. The Recovery Summer didn't move the employment needle at all - in fact, construction jobs only went up by 19K last month, even with all the ARRA projects they were bragging about.
2) I think that election night parties scattered around the country are a must. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "We must all drink together, or assuredly we shall all drink seperately" (Stuff Jefferson Wishes He Could Take Back, 3rd Ed.)

They're not economists. They're paid shills.
Actual economists look at the data and come to the inescapable conclusion that not only are we fucked, we are fucked for as far as the eye can see, with diminished living standards for at least the next generation, unless we de-socialize this economy.
Kill Social Security, kill Medicare and Medicaid, kill the Departments of Education, Commerce, Energy, Interior, HHS, Labor, EPA, cut everything else, including Defense. Slash tax rates to half of what they are now, pay off our debt, institute some protective tariff measures to boost employment, and turn the vast majority of the power now wielded by the Feds over to the states. Force Congress to abandon its delegation of authority to coin money to the Fed.

Listen this stuff is easy if you are evil. The dems have nothing to run on that's positive, therefore, they have 2 things to claim that people pay attention too. Unemployment and the stock market.
The latter is easy, have the fed prime and pump the stock market thru election day.
Unemployment can be handled a number of ways. Crank the Expected Numbers, so it looks positive. Make certain assumptions and calculations, "adjust" those numbers down the line. Or flat out lie.

Here's another example of how Barry's administration is hurting job growth.
We have a small but rapidly growing company that makes products that you would think any lefty would love, they are green, leave no hazardous by-products and replace products that have been deemed to be harmful to people and the environment. We are growing rapidly here in the States but we have a significant worldwide market.
One of the things Barry said when taking office is that his administration would focus on growing our exports. I even attended a confernce in DC where he spoke and made it a point to say that increasing exports were going to be a huge part of his agenda.
So what happens? His DOT took our product and reclassified it to a much more restrictive international shipping class which means our products now cost significantly more than similar but inferior products made in the Middle East and Asia. The product has not changed and we have still not been given any solid reason for this change. The consequence is that not only are we hiring fewer than we would without these restrictions here in the States we are now considering moving some if not all of our manufacturing overseas.
Never trust what liberals say, watch what they do.

Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said there is “no quick fix” for the U.S. economy as it emerges from the worst recession in more than seven decades and promised to lay out new ideas next week to boost growth and hiring.
The president, speaking at the White House, again urged Congress to pass a package of measures to help small businesses, including tax breaks and aid to ease credit.
“I will be addressing a broader package of new ideas next
week,” he said. The economy is moving in “the right
direction; we just have to speed it up.”
I thought Recovery Summer was going to fix everything. Now there's no quick fix. Unemployment is up. Growth is down. That's definitely in the right direction so let's speed that up
Posted by: TheQuietMan at September 03, 2010 07:09 AM (lsyVQ)
The current situation is due entirely to Obama. That's why there is a kink in Nov. 2009 for the initial unemployment claims trendline, it was when Obama's policies started affecting the economy.
Also I don't buy that we were on the brink of a great depression in 2008. The events of 9/11 were at least as shocking to the economic system of the country (and world) as the 2008 financial meltdown. The stuff from 2008 would have worked itself out in 2009. We are now 2/3 thru 2010 for crying out loud. Unemployment should be at 6.5% or lower and GDP about 4% each quarter.
We all know the stories in the MSM would be over the top drastic if a Republican was presiding over this economy. Grandmas eating catfood, homeless dying in the freezing cold, the family that had to sell everything and move in with the parents because of unemployment.

I agree with McScribbler, describing this as "a yawner" is ridiculous. Each month of 9.5% unemployment should be a f'n outrage. I understand the numbers not moving but the comparison is not with last month but what the numbers should be. That's why this report should be a siren call. It's like a freak'n air raid warning during WWII. Nobody would have said "there goes that siren again, what a yawner".
Put it this way, if 5% unemployment is full employment then its like Defcon 5. 10% unemployment would be Defcon 1. We are basically at DEFCON 1 employment wise (and ecomonically). We got the President running around acting likes things are Defcon 5 just making shit up about "recovery summer"

All this badness has the silver lining of insuring a major win for the good guys (less-evil guys?) come November. That said, it's still badness, and the roots of the problem run deep.
I am hopeful that the Reps "get it" on the regulation and taxes front. Maybe they will be smart enough to at least TRY to pound through positive change to address those issues. I suggest that killing crap & tax and deathcare for good, clearning hurdles for more nuclear power, and reining in the EPA go to the top of the list.
That said, I worry that they will NOT do anything intelligent to address the other cause of high unemployment - low and declining demand for lower skilled labor. That problems is worsened by the outsourcing of higher skilled work to India, and the importation of "skilled" workers from the 3rd world who's education was subsidized by their governments. Will they really take action to seal the border, and deport the excess bottom-scale labor we have? Will they levy draconian punishments (as they should) against companies that knowingly hire illegals? Will they cut off the visas for cheap Indian professionals? I worry that they will not. And will they do anything to offset the cheap labor that is so abundant in the 3rd world slave factories? I doubt it. The concept of "free trade" has been transformed in their puny brains to consist of simply laying down for the grossest and most abusive merchantilism that China and others can devise.
What can be done to push the stoopid party into doing what's right? If they are not forced to push for intelligent policy, what is to prevent us from losing the advantage in the next election? If they are allowed to blow it, it'll be a tough battle to win in the future.

That's certainly the way Gateway Pundit treated it. I look at it like the old story of the English nanny:
"The celebrated English unflappability is capsulized in the answer given in 1940 to a frightened two-year-old who asked about the loud noises he was hearing. "Bombs, dear," said Nanny. "Elbows off the table.""

Yet another extension in unemployment benefits.
It will be an interesting dilemma for the Republicans. Will they stand up to Obama's demagouery and vilification, or will they cave?

Indeed. Don't get me wrong - I crave victory for our side. ANYTHING is better than what we have now, even if it just kicks the can down the road a bit. I just worry that the Reps will do what they love to do when they win - go soft and become fearful of losing later on. They think of it as drifting "to the center" when really it's just drifting LEFT. That reduces the vital difference between parties in the eyes of the public, and can even lend the appearance of legitimacy to the enemy. You can give them a 60%+ issue, like immigration, and they'll STILL puss out.
I think the question is - what is the best way to force the Reps to use the balls God gave 'em? I think we'll have to keep constant nagging pressure on them.

The next two years Republicans will not have enough TEA party types to salvage the economy from the calamity already set in motion by the all Democrat government of the last two years. If unemployment spikes higher, MFM will blame Republicans for waking us from the Marxist dream state.
Charting debt along with this chart would show failed stimulus. Charting where stimulus/bailouts went might be of interest ... private sector long term jobs, union jobs, government (union) jobs, union pensions, foreign interests ...
It might show money went to pay off those that donated to getting the Marxist in chief elected. And now the union "dons" are promising $150 million for the midterms. Nice how they spread the wealth (and power) around ... to themselves.

Geoff weren't most of the job losses from Census jobs and weren't most of the new hires from the private sector ? Do you think/see any importance in that ?
The private sector needs to add 100 - 150K jobs per month to keep up with new entrants into the labor market. They haven't managed to do that. Given the large amount of government spending this summer, that's a bad sign.
And again, we apparently converted 3/4 million full time jobs into part time jobs.
As Romer said yesterday, she is still mystified as to why these huge spending amounts haven't caused employers to start hiring. The business sector and conservative blogs have been screaming the answer at her since the Inauguration, but it never seems to reach her forebrain.
