Unexpectedly, Jobless Claims Rise

Jobless Claims in U.S. Unexpectedly Climb to Three-Month High

By Bob Willis - Aug 5, 2010 10:08 AM EDT

Initial jobless claims climbed by 19,000 in the week ended July 31, the most since April and exceeding the highest estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington.

Initial jobless claims climbed by 19,000 to 479,000 in the week ended July 31, the most since April and exceeding the highest estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The number of people receiving unemployment benefits dropped, while those getting extended payments rose.

A cooling economy means employers will resist taking on more staff in coming months, raising the risk consumer spending will weaken further. The jobless rate rose last month as payroll increases werenÂ’t large enough to keep up with gains in the labor force, economists forecast a government report tomorrow will show.

“There really is no upside momentum in the labor market, and that’s a critical long-term determinant of where the economy is going,” said Steven Ricchiuto, chief economist at Mizuho Securities USA Inc. in New York. “People just aren’t getting jobs.”

Unexpectedly.

And this from a news wire that is supposedly mostly economic/financial in nature.

But by gum, they keep getting surprised by unexpected developments!

Via Instapundit.

By the way -- retail sales were down too.

Reason?

Why, the cold, snowy winter, of course. Global warming! Proving we need cap and tax to save our economy.

7 There is the possibility that these people in the administration really and truly believe that what they are doing is going to improve economic growth. That would mean two things, that they are committed Keynesians, and that they are profoundly stupid.

Joe "Stupid Head" Biden, July, 2009

The Obama admin "misread" the depth of the economic troubles it inherited and still expects more new jobs in the long term as the spending pace from the $787 billion stimulus plan quickens, Vice President Joe Biden said.

Joe "Fucking Dope" Biden, April 2010:

Vice President Biden predicted Friday at a Pennsylvania fundraiser that the U.S. economy would be adding up to 500,000 jobs each month "some time in the next couple of months."

"All in all we're going to be creating somewhere between 100[,000] and 200,000 jobs next month, I predict," Biden said, according to a pool report, adding that he "got in trouble" for a job growth prediction last month. "Even some in the White House said, 'Hey, don't get ahead of yourself.' Well, I'm here to tell you, some time in the next couple of months, we're going to be creating between 250,000 jobs a month and 500,000 jobs a month."

"We caught a lot of bad breaks on the way down," Biden added. "We're going to catch a few good breaks because of good planning on the way up."

The Obama administration is about to take this country down in flames by spending hundreds of billions, trillions, tens of trillions on anything and everything, just like your garden variety drowning man clutches at straws. And as long as the Fed has the bond vigilantes locked up, kneecapped and ball-and-gagged in its basement, there is nothing at all that can be done: we suggest leaning back in your favorite made in China chair and watching the nation''s slow motion collapse as it unravels before our very eyes."

92 Two shades of O/T, just to cleanse the palate.

1.) Terror arrests in California, Minnesota, and...Alabama?!?  (Clearly, the Redneck Early Warning system needs tuning.) (h/t Hot Air)

2.) ND Gov. Hoeven has a daughter.  Who, as it happens, looks smokin' hot in a bikini. (duff of cap to Other McCain, and yes, there's image-y goodness)

We now return you to your previously scheduled mental breakdown, already in progress.

If they were just stupid, they'd at least see that they're getting nowhere and look to make changes.

This is racism malice, straight up.

Nickless, being stupid that sort of rationalization is beyond them.  OK, I'll move a little bit: these people have gone to prestige colleges so either they have some smarts or their parents are/were loaded.  Nah, changed my mind, they're still stupid.

...but, if somehow they can build a small empire to lib/dem dom....and get rid of the fox news empire, then they will be the go to guys for news right?

Build something?  No.  So their other option is to get rid of Fox but there again they may encounter unintended consequences - meaning that some, or a lot, or even all of theirs may go as well.  Hello Pravda!

Depends upon what you meant by 'rose'. If you went straight for the worst, most disgusting connotation, then you sir are in the groove. Otherwise, back off junior, and let the pros work.

Posted by: Ben at August 05, 2010 12:56 PM

Nuh-uh.

I had a job, and so did everyone else I knew.

Had a nice place near the beach, and enough money for some low-key Valu-Rite paaaah-taaaaay goodness. Had a car I could service myself, one that didn't flash error codes to gubmint computers when I disconnected the seatbelt warning light.

Was gettin' more, ummmm, friendly action from the chix IYKWIMAITYD.

And Jimmuh Carter was a fool, but hadn't reached that stage of dementia where he hated the USA. Yet.

Pradva would be so proud of the AP

The crowd at the Ford plant was smiling from ear to ear, giving a very warm welcome to President Obama, who finished speaking at about 10:45 a.m.

The plant is hiring some 1,200 new employees; 400 to 600 of them will be brand new employees, to put together the new Ford Explorer SUV.

Of those employees, many will be making $14 an hour, which is about half of what the previous employees make at the plant.

Not mentioned in the story is the 5,000 people laid off. So 5,000 out and 1,200 back in and half of those being paid half of what the former employees made. I can see why they were "smiling from ear to ear"

102 steevy: "All the AGW shit is coming back with a vengeance..."

That was the cover the communists were using to infiltrate every Western nation. As with all of the policies that have been crafted since the radical 60's, the Progressives/Democrats cannot afford to abandon their constructs or methodology. Their ends did not change, only the means - a less radical pose. We're being taken over by Watermelons.

Well, for the first half of the 70s I was mostly in the South China Seas making a floating airport go so we could bomb the hell out of the commies just so the commies at home could make it all for naught.

The music was a whole lot better though, even if Elvis did die. In the last part of the 70s inflation was astronomical unemployment was high and Carter fixed everything with his shit eating grin and a sweater.

But I had a job and I didn't have to sleep in a coffin inside a room full of swinging dicks underneath a jet engine test stand.

I was happy.

Posted by: Vic at August 05, 2010 09:41 AM (/jbAw)

104 I have turned their machinations messing with the U3 unemployment rate into a game to try and find where they fiddle with it.  The U3 is a terrible metric to begin with but at least there was a historical way to compare apples with apples.  It is now apples vs oranges.

105 Decaf: "Curious, I agree, though never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity."

Even stupid people occasionally, even if accidentally, do something right. A dart from a blind man will eventually hit the target. This all is not explainable by mere stupidity.

I said here yesterday that the college grads, newly minted are getting jobs.  Maybe not the $60 grand jobs they were promised when they started college, instead they are getting $20 and $30 and up to $50 grand, depending on their field of study and the city, but they are getting jobs.  those who were fired were making way more money than this.  And they are easily replaced by the new kids coming out of school.   And, since you can live with ten others in the same position in a 9 X 12 room, they are happy.  Plus mom and dad can keep them on their insurance, so they don't even need benefits.

The people who lost their jobs aren't even getting the jobs that are out there that do require a level of experience.  Apparently, rumor has it, those with the jobs would rather lore someone away from a competitor.  rumor has it, that they are telling head hunters they will only hire people who are already working, not the ones who have been fired.

why do you suppose this is?

Yes and no.

Yes because it looked like there was no end in sight and Carter had no fucking clue how to fix anything.

No because back then us proles were only accused of causing a "malaise", not of being enemies of the ruling class and actively screwing everything up. Plus, now those of us who went through that actually have homes, families and an ever-increasing mountain of federal regulations.

Does somebody have a time-travel machine to lend me to go back?
