US Institutes Profiling At Overseas Airports
— DrewM

Sure, they won't call it that but that's what it is.

The US transport security administration said all passengers flying into the United States from abroad would be subject to random screening or so-called "threat-based" screens.

But it further mandated that "every individual flying into the US from anywhere in the world travelling from or through nations that are state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest will be required to go through enhanced screening."

And what countries will be effected by this? Let's see if they have anything in common...

Cuba
Iran
Sudan
Syria
Afghanistan
Libya
Nigeria
Pakistan
Somalia
Yemen
Algeria
Lebanon
Saudi Arabia
Iraq

Cuba is a little odd but it's a state sponsor of terrorism. What else might the rest have in common? Oh yeah, they are majority Muslim nations (though Lebanon and Nigeria have sizable Christian populations).

Welcome to the real world President Obama!

This isn't a fool-proof system, none is. Richard Reid, the original shoe bomber, is a British subject who got on a plane in Paris, so he would not have been subject to this new policy. Also, Abdulmutallab could have just as easily started his fateful flight from London*, not Lagos, Nigeria. It would be better to add travelers carrying passports from these countries to the list of people to be singled out (they will be, see update).

Just for fun, imagine for a moment if Bush had ordered this. The screeching and rending of garments would be unbearable. But since President Wonderful's administration did it, silence.

Still, this is a welcome development. It's almost as if people are realizing that it's not a bunch of Anabaptists running around blowing things up.

Now, if this bunch will just realize that if you catch someone thanks to these additional procedures, you shouldn't treat them as if they are common criminals. Alas, that is likely to prove to be a bridge too far.

Update:

Just after I posted this I saw this update from Tapper's version of the story. It looks like the enhanced security procedures will be utilized for any national of these countries, no matter where they are traveling from.

*"someguy" makes the point in the comments that Abdulmutallab couldn't have made his trip from London since the Brits had him on their Do Not Enter list. Point taken but the wider point still stands, there are plenty of terrorists to be in London and all across Europe who wouldn't have been subject to the policy. The addition of citizenship is an important (but again not fool proof) step in dealing with this.

He's not even trying to be subtle.   And to think that Chris Mathews, Olby, Fum, Parker, Brooks, et. al., said he made this governing gig look so simple.

I sure bet they're red faced about now!

Does anyone think AQ will have any difficulty getting a passport from any number of third world s--tholes to use at will. Who will be doing these pat downs, forward placed TSA agents or locals? My guess is locals - good luck with that - esp. the crotch check.

You mean we aren't all at risk from the blood-thirsty fanatics of such groups as the Swords of Ammann, the Brethren of the Triple-Dunk, or the Mennonite Front for Preaching and Combat?? Who'da thunk it. You mean that the danger comes from members of one specific religion, with a long history of violence, and violnet doctrines at its core? Inconceivable.

It's a refreshing change. Of course, I'm also confident that the retards currently in charge of our country will revert to head-in-sand mode once the ACLU and CAIR start bellowing about the unfairness of it all...

Yeah, Egypt's omission is curious.

As for AQ's ability to circumvent this, sure but if you can't stop the easy shit (a guy buys a one way ticket, in cash, with no luggage in Lagos) you have no shot at anything else.

The harder we make it, even mildly so, the more chance they'll fuck up.

Even beyond the actual difference it may or may not make, the idea that this administration is singling out Muslim nations is a pretty interesting development.

28 A radical change is needed, not a little wrinkle. If airliners are going to be used as weapons (big cruise missiles) to attack the US, then it is time to chop the job from the TSA to the DoD. Restrict the inbound routes, no direct to US cities (Europe lands at Dover for example, Pacific at Vandenberg, etc.), all Muslims fly on airliners built and operated by Muslims (everything else is haram), DoD security teams on board, etc. It will be good for our carbon footprint, think of the trees.

The suicide bombing on a CIA base in Afghanistan last week was carried out by a Jordanian doctor who was an al-Qaida double agent, Western intelligence officials told NBC News.

According to Western intelligence officials, the perpetrator was Humam Khalil Abu-Mulal al-Balawi, 36, an al-Qaida sympathizer from the town of Zarqa, which is also the hometown of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant Islamist responsible for several devastating attacks in Iraq.

Al-Balawi was arrested by Jordanian intelligence more than a year ago. However, the Jordanians believed that al-Balawi had been successfully reformed and brought over to the American and Jordanian side, setting him up as an agent and sending him off to Afghanistan and Pakistan to infiltrate al-Qaida.

As a male, I am de facto profiled in every rape case. I profile every day: Which line is going to be the shortest? The one the guy paying cash or the one with huge cart of junk food and a fistful of food stamps? The security scanner with a family of small kids, or the college kid with a backpack? The business man with a briefcase and a laptop?

I welcome the advent of profiling on airline flights.

57 Also, Abdulmutallab could have just as easily started his fateful flight from London, not Lagos, Nigeria

This is factually incorrect and requires an update.

Abdulmutallab could not have started his fateful flight from London because the British had revoked his permission to visit their country once they found out from his father that he had joined al Queda.

The Obama Administration looked at the exact same set of facts after interviewing the father and holding an inter-agency meeting between the CIA, FBI and State Department. The Obama Administraiton after that meeting chose not to revoke Abdulmutallab's visa (which is State Department permission to fly on US airlines and permission to fly into the United States).

Without a visa, of course, Abdullmuttab was unable to enter London, and he would not have been permitted to fly on British Airways. So he could not have started his fateful flight there.

The US could easily have stopped this terrorist by simply revoking his visa. The Obama Administration chose not to do that. So of course he was allowed on the aircraft.

The north, on the other hand, is majority muslim and it's not uncommon for them to be violent against infidels. It's like a different country. HOWEVER, we don't blow ourselves up, not even the northern muslims. We're into self preservation. That's why we're so mad at this idiot for being the only Nigerian willing to blow himself up for allah. Aside from the fact that he could have killed hundreds of people, he's now made it difficult for the rest of us. There are so many other African countries with larger percentages of muslims. So Dr Bart can get the exotic herbs and spices for his miracle cancer cure, we will need you to send some money to us to finance his next expedition to New Orleans.  The timing will be around Ash Wednesday.  He will need at least one week before then, and maybe a few days after that to recover, I mean, classify and prepare your custom concoction.

Please send as much as you can via Western Union to us.  Make it payable to "First Mugu Bancorp".  Be sure to specify the codewords "Charles Johnson is a douche" so we know it is from you.

See you soon, Ms Farouk!  Kindest regards!

It sucks that the vast majority of people are going to be considered suspicious because of the action of a few or even one. I'm just not sure what the alternative is. I know it's not to pretend that every one from every place is as likely to require attention.

75

Country of origination is only one factor that should go into profiling.  Obviously it is trivial for a jihadist to start his journey from a non-blacklisted country, and most travelers from such countries are not jihadist -- so on its own, country of origin profiling is not much better than what is being done now.

Adherence to Islam would be the perfect profiling characteristic, but unfortunately there is no sure fire indicator of this.    So profiling needs to be based on a combination of factors such as sex (weighted towards male), age (weighted towards 18-30), appearance (weighted towards non-white and obvious indicators of adherence to Islam), and behavior (nervous looking, bought tickets with cash,  bought a one way ticket, etc).

Problem is, such a profiling system will inconvenience a lot of non-jihadist Muslims.   Boo hoo.

The TSA is not set up for the volumn it would produce. That makes more sense than what the actual officials are saying.

Wiserbud,

Interesting that it's on this list. I just saw an interactive map somewhere, and Iraq was definitely not on it.

Are there two lists?

83 I feel bad for the ordinary people from these places who will have to put up with this - I know someone named Hussein, of all things (family's from Pakistan but emigrated here), but it's well past time for this. And we should NOT be depending on countries like Nigeria and Syria for our security. We're only talking about a delay at the airport. Again, while I sympathize for the innocent people caught up in this, we aren't leading them in chains about the airport or throwing them in jail, so complaints about 'violating civil rights' are waek at best.

Aren't there always?

85 In one sense, I think that we have too much security on domestic flights.  I think that people should have a right to be anonymous in this country.  Don't want to show ID but still want to fly, fine, step into this room and strip Mr Smith.

But I see your point.  What could have possibly happened recently, sayyy ...over the last8 years or so, that would have caused Iraq to not be on this list?

Hmmmmmm......

Nope... got nothing.  Can't think of a damn thing.  Maybe the media will look into that and get back to us.

DrewM.: Understood.  However, the CIA Factbook is probably going by Nigerian "official" figures.  (Not sure if there are any real figures, actually.)

I think most Nigerian southerners would agree with me that there are probably not more muslims than Christians.  It's a 50-50 split.  Nigeria, for most of its history since independence, has been governed (and I use that term very loosely) by a Muslim ruling class that is not averse to, let's say, massaging figures to consolidate their power.  Not that that would be true only of Muslim Nigerians, but I digress.  So I think those figures are probably incorrect.

The truth is no one really knows what the figures are.  This is a country that had a census in the 90s, I believe, but no one still knows for sure how many people are in Nigeria.  (Most put it around 150 million.)

As an example of massaging figures, I think one census "recorded" more people in one of the northern (read: muslim) cities than in Lagos, which anyone who knew anything about Nigeria would find patently absurd.  Lagos is by far the most populous city in Nigeria, probably in Africa - it's crawling with people - and the idea that any other city is more populous is ridiculous.

It's kind of like the number of jobs "created or saved".  This administration reminds me in so many ways of stuff that goes on in countries like Nigeria, but that's a topic for another day.

And for the record, I'm not necessarily saying that I disagree with putting Nigeria on the list.  After all, the idiot is Nigerian.  I'm just saying it's unfortunate that we're on the list when it's extremely unlikely that any other Nigerian would try to blow himself up along with others. Borrowing from another commenter's statement, I think there have been more American-born terrorists than Nigerian. (And I believe the number of the latter is 1 - the pantybomber.)

88 I see Indonesia (which is the largest Muslim country in the world) is NOT on the list. Why not???? Indonesia has a lengthy history of domestic and exported Islamic fundamentalist terrorism. WHO'S President? Grew up WHERE?

89 It's almost as if people are realizing that it's not a bunch of Anabaptists running around blowing things up.

Damn Cathars at it again in Europe?  Time for another Inquisition?  hehe

I share the concern that this will turn into a CYA, "See, we're taking a hard line." type of thing that is more smoke than fire. And that whoever is charged with this will wilt when the left whines.

But on the othe hand, practically every day for the past year has brought a new, mind boggling, liberal oriented policy from this administration that I couldn't have even imagined 18 months ago.

I'll take it and work for more. It's a step in the right direction FOR ONCE.

Agreed. But I have really thought about this and I can honestly say that if I were flying to a foreign country and they were plagued with terrorist activities by people that fit the same profile I have...I would understand the need for extra screening. Wouldn't love it, might be a little irritated, but in the final analysis I would understand and go along.

#4 - Funny how all of a sudden the rightwing knuckleheads care about profiling.

Yup we care about it and we love it!!!!  I am about as happy as hell that we are finally doing it.  Profile the literal shit out of these dirtbags.  Hell, shoot 'em on site if you do find something.

95 One way to solve the airline security problem from the middle east would be to route all flights from there through Israel. It would be very effective.
