The 2.5-inch unexploded ordnance became lodged in the patient's scalp during an improvised explosive device attack. But when the patient arrived for treatment, doctors thought it was only a piece of scrap metal, the Air Force reported."Initially, I thought it was a spent end of some sort of larger round," Lt. Col. Anthony Terreri, the radiologist at the Craig Joint Theater Hospital who checked the patient's CAT scan, told the Air Force.
They removed the people they could, the rest donned protective gear and risked themselves to save him.
It reminded me of this story, some of you know it. (Then) Captain John Oh and his surgical team, and an NCO trained in explosive ordnance removal carefully withdrew an RPG from the side of a soldier from the 10th Mountain Division in Iraq. And he survived his wound.
I never really know how to acknowledge this kind of dedication and courage, except to tell people about it. I hope it's something. I know it's not enough.
*not trying to avoid naming the branches of service involved, it's not apparent to me from the stories if they were Army or Air Force. Which doesn't matter in terms of their amazing service, just in terms of me giving appropriate acknowledgement.

Since 2001, I've paid the bills of dozens of servicemen and women in the line at convenience stores, grocery stores, and gas stations. What I do is sidle up and before they can react, I say, "Your money's no good here" and slap down the cash or credit card.
The first time I did it I felt like a total smarmy dork, but it got easier. Now it's second nature. They're always surprised and pleased.
I once bought an older man's purchases in line at a 7-11, because his jacket said "USMC" on it. He thanked me, so I thanked him for his service. He was a Vietnam vet and said it was the first time in his life anyone had ever thanked him.
We need to make sure the veterans of the two current wars don't have that experience.

Here in cattle country in Hawaii we don't see many military.
BUT having lunch way up north I bought 4 Marines breakfeast so they wouldn't know who did it...funny, I couldn't buy lunch there again, never got a bill.
Marines are my brothers (you too babes in Green) but the US military are the finest and God Bless them

I am so happy that this incredible feat of surgical skill was performed BEFORE the whole Obamacare BS got implemented. 'Cause next year this would never get done.

One of my most vivid memories from Iraq is from a night joint patrol with Iraqi police, when we had already been hit once with an IED (which luckily did not result in any injuries, just some damage to one of our humvees) and were heading back to the FOB. We were crossing a series of bridges over several canals near the FOB, and came under attack again from RPG and small arms fire, coming from a residential neighborhood.
I very distinctly remember the platoon leader saying over the net repeatedly, "If you've got PID (Positive IDentification) return fire!", but not one of the gunners fired a shot, for the very simple reason that they did not have a defininite target to shoot at. And make no mistake, I knew from previous experience that these guys had no hesitation whatsoever about turning insurgents into hamburger if fired upon, but this night they couldn't see exactly where the fire was coming from, and they simply were not going to open up randomly on a neighborhood and risk harming innocents.
These young men (and I absolutely detest hearing anybody calling them "kids", they are grown men, with a level of maturity many people will never achieve), even in the face of hostile fire that threatened their very lives, still maintained discipline and refused to put innocent lives at risk. They were and are some of the very best our country has to offer, and I feel honoured to have had the opportunity to be associated with them.

Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Piotr Pszkowski said that the army chief of staff and Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer were also on board the plane.
Reports of the number killed in the crash varied. Polish officials put the figure at 88, while Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said 96 had died and Russia's Investigative Committee said the total was 132.

Was I the only one that thought luck might not necessarily be a fact in the crash? What with it taking place in Russia, where Putin's unlucky political adversaries have unlucky fatal accidents, and whistleblowers come down with unlucky Polonium-210 poisoning? Poland and the Czech Republic were recently sold out by Obama with the whole missile shield debacle, so maybe the Czech political mucky-mucks better carry around some lucky rabbits feet that aren't unluckily contaminated with exotic poisons or bugged with unlucky transmission devices. Just sayin'.
