— DrewM What could go wrong?
Mrs Clinton said the talks are due to begin on September 2 and will be hosted by President Barack Obama. She said she hoped a comprehensive peace agreement can be reached within one year."There have been difficulties in the past, there will be difficulties ahead. .. I ask the parties to persevere, to keep moving forward even through difficult times and to continue working to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region," Mrs Clinton said.
The leaders of Egypt and Jordan also have been invited to attend the first session.
In a statement, the Quartet - the EU, the UN, the US and Russia - said its members reaffirmed direct negotiations between the parties, "which can be completed within one year."
Well, Obama needed a "win" and I guess this will do in a pinch. As far as headlines go, it's better than "Obama Doesn't Care About 9/11 Families On Ground Zero Mosque" or "Obama Is A Muslim!".
For a guy who was supposed to be all about 'new politics' this is pretty much the same old, same old. When a President is in the dumps at home, they usually turn to a foreign affairs problem to change the subject. Given the intractable nature of the problem, I'd say like the guy in the Last Crusade, Obama has chosen poorly. Even more problematic for Team Obama is the fact that a high profile foreign affairs summit isn't exactly going to convince people he's all about "jobs, jobs, jobs", which happens to be one of the most important issues this fall.
As for the summit itself, call me a pessimist but my prediction is that in a year, this latest version of the "Peace Process" will amount to very little. The first stumbling block will hit pretty soon...Israel's settlement freeze is due to expire on September 26th. Obama and the Palestinians aren't fond of new settlements while those pesky Jews outrageously insist on doing whatever they want in their own country. What magic does Obama have for that relatively minor problem?
Despite the bleating of editorial pages here and in Europe, the real issue in the Mideast isn't this, it's Iran and it's nuclear program. There maybe some connections though....
The Obama administration, citing evidence of continued troubles inside Iran’s nuclear program, has persuaded Israel that it would take roughly a year — and perhaps longer — for Iran to complete what one senior official called a “dash” for a nuclear weapon, according to American officials....“We think that they have roughly a year dash time,” said Gary Samore, President Obama’s top adviser on nuclear issues, referring to how long it would take the Iranians to convert nuclear material into a working weapon. “A year is a very long period of time.”
American officials said the United States believed international inspectors would detect an Iranian move toward breakout within weeks, leaving a considerable amount of time for the United States and Israel to consider military strikes.
Considering the history of failure within the US intelligence community on this issue I don't take a great deal of comfort in their ability to forecast the state of Iran's program. I have even less confidence in the idea that this administration will act in a decisive way should they have credible evidence of Iran approaching the nuclear threshold.
Bottom line, brace yourself for fawning headlines.

Problem is intractable, and the only way Isreal can have "peace" through these talks, is to commit suicide.
The proposed borders are NOT defensable. They not only take way too much land from Israel, but cut the country into parts, where the transportation corridors are controlled by people who want to Kill them.
Add in the very small area we are talking about (you can drive acroos Israel in less than an hour in most places), and modern Artiller and rockets, and EVERY part of Israel would be within Range of Artillery owned by a group whose very founding documents, state the wish to destroy Israel.
Unworkable.

Yup. Considering how precise and accurate our intelligence was in Iraq about WMD, I can't say I have a boundless faith in our knowledge of Iran's nuclear capability.
And if it weren't such a serious issue, I'd be chuckling about the attitude of "Relax, folks, we're totally on top of this, we have it under control, plenty of time, no problem."
Sadly, I have such little trust in this administration that my reaction to Samore's and other officials' "reassurances", is pondering how the WH spin is supposed to play out here.

I predict this is going to be as successful as the attempts made by President Clinton and every other U.S. President since 1948, which is zilch. By the way, those other Presidents were more respected by all parties than Obama is and the U.S. was perceived to be more influential, richer, and more mighty militarily at the time of their failed attempts to get Mid-East peace in the region.

Has anyone else noticed the timeframe for Iran to get a nuclear weapon has rapidly dropped since Obama got into office? Only a year now they say. Wonder how the Czechs and Poles feel about this?
Cordoba is supposed to have a big event on 9/11/2010. This summit is susspoed to start on 9/2/2010. And also Obama is supposed to have a meet with Amadjihadi at the UN in Sept. Gee after all the kow-towing I bet Obama will take another vacation while Israel and everyone else who loves freedom will feel screwed.

Yes, what could possibly go wrong, based upon the respective parties' bargaining positions:
Israel/Jews: "Please stop killing us and we will live in peace with you and help you build a functioning society and state. Please?"
Palestinians/Muslims: "FUCK YOU AND DIE, JEWS!!!!!!!!!! WE WILL KILL YOU FOREVER AND EVER, ALLAH ACKBAR!!!!!!!!!!! [insert sound of thousands of muslim/arab dipshits doing the imbecilic tongue trill].

This. If they would say they do, their actions belie it... but so rarely do they bother saying they want peace. They gripe about their grievances, but so much of their problems are their own or other arabs faults.
Why does anyone care what they say or want? (Complicated answer, I know).

What? Captain Awesome can't bring peace to two parties that have been at war longer than the wheel has been around? Maybe he bit off more than he can chew? That this might end poorly and end up costing him more?
You see that's where I disagree; I think, like so many of Obama's decisions in *critical* areas, his ideology matters far more than his image. He is just using this peace talk to see if he can't leverage his political clout to further marginalize Israel in the Mideast.

Actually, there is some potential benefit in this. Hillary gets to be responsible (bus bait) for these peace talks that are guaranteed to go nowhere, making her a solid part of the Obama regime's broad record of failure. Making a 2012 run for her more difficult.
Au contrair, mon ami. Failure guarantees she quits as Secretary of State and makes a run at him in the Donk primaries in 2012. She can say that she tried her best but when foreign policy is based on the skittle-shitting unicorn fantasies of a man-child, it was hopless. She'll re-embrace Israel like her "husband" did and perhaps be our second president with a pussy (after Barak).

Dateline: September 3 2010.
Tensions remain high following the disastrously abrupt end of the Israeli-Palestinain Peace talks. Former Sec of State Hilary Clinton refused to make any comment about Israel's decision to recall its ambassador, or The call by the Palestinian Authority to commence another infitah. Details remain hazy, but the furor seems to have begun at the opening ceremonies itself, which consisted of speeches by both parties and their host, the United States, and exhcange of gifts, and an opening breakfast.Speculation remains whether the menu choice of 'extreme' bacon pancakes may have played a part.......

I wouldn't slam our intelligence organizations so much -- they were right about Iraq (they did have the stuff to make WMDs, and not rudimentary stuff too); they may be right about Iran as well (or this is a false flag).
As for any peace talks working, I tend to believe that Pali family we know: no it won't; the people in control of the Palestinians are quite incapable of any sort of compromise or concessions of their own (they have been given compromise solutions before that were more than generous -- and they refused them). They have no problem with killing their own people en masse and destroying their own homes (look at their support of Iran's nuclear ambitions against Israel, what do they think will happen to the Palestinians -- and the Syrians, Jordanians, Lebanese -- in the event? that should tell you something) -- these are not reasonable (or even sane, by western/humanist standards) people, and they have been in control of the populace for a long time now.
They know the situation far better than I probably do, so I tend to believe them.

"The broad outlines of a peace agreement are well known and likely to be based on the borders of Israel before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, with certain agreed-upon land swaps. "
Of course they ignore the fact that this is the exact offer that the Arabs have rejected for the past 40 years. It also ignores the fact that Israel knows that these are "Auschwitz borders"

Not a bit of it. Hitlery is cunning, as well as unprincipled and devious. She has already shoved this mess onto Osma Obama's plate. If it fails -- as it must, unless Israel decides to lie down and die -- he'll get what little blame seeps out around the corners.

I really don't know if these peace talks will give Obama much of a popularity bounce -- except amoung the far left. I think the "Israeli/Palestinian peace talk" card has been done to death as well. Only a truly naive and/or stupid person actually believes such a thing could happen -- I mean it does cause for a significant suspension of reason to think otherwise.
In fact, I can see this blowing up (figuratively) in his face. The Palestinians can be guaranteed to act like self-righteous, belligerent assholes who insist upon themselves and Islam too much. With the merde mosque, Iran's nukes, and this belief that Obama is a muslim in the news, why would any sane person want to go near this topic? Odds are more than favorable that it won't end well.

I keep hearing this, and my response is "so you don't care if the result is genocide and victory of the aggressors, who then are in a position to move on to the next target, so long as you don't have to hear about it any more?"
Usually results in an exploding head.
Liberals will talk about a multi-ethnic society and multiculturalism until they're blue in the face, until the topic comes around to Islam and Israel, and suddenly all the wind comes out of their sails. Suddenly Islamists have a right to exclude everyone not like them from even being NEAR their territory, and Israel is "starting trouble" by just existing.
