Above the post update:
I know hockey isn't everyone's thing but you really should give this game a chance. It's being played at an insanely high level and fast pace. The US is leading 2-1 off a pair of goals by NJ Devils Detroit Red Wings Defenseman Brian Rafalski.
I know it's tempting fate to poke a sleeping bear but here's what American born NY Ranger, though not Olympian, Brandon Dubinski had to say about Canada's all world player Sidney Crosby last week.
The game is on MSNBC and really worth a look.
Heh, I just got a text message from tmi3rd: "If this were the NHL, there would have been a monster fight after the third goal".
I was thinking the same thing...you can tell some of the boys wanna go. Alas, it's the Olympics. It's the day before the 30th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice game and the US is playing it's biggest game of the tournament so far. Let's not kid ourselves, beating the Canadians isn't the same as beating the Soviets at the height of the Cold War but a US win will pretty much cause the entire nation of Canada to curl up in a ball and cry.
Someone asked me (expert that I am) if I thought the US could win and yes, I think they can.
First, Canada has not been world beaters in their first two games. They needed to go to extra shots in the shoot out to beat Switzerland (the US handled the Swiss pretty easily). They also can't seem to find anyone to play with their superstar Sidney Crosby.
Now, they still have a ton of talent and probably the best goalie to ever play the game, so they are very dangerous.
If the US thinks they can run and gun with Canada they are in trouble. If they play a responsible defensive game and take chances when they are offered, they can win.
As always in hockey, goaltending will be key. Ryan Miller will face more and tougher shots in the 1st period tonight than he has in the first two games combined. He needs to be very good tonight.
Earlier the Russians beat the Czech Republic 4-2 in a game that saw the world's best player, Alexander Ovechkin, do his thing...
FTR- Jagr isn't a small Euro forward. He goes 6'3", 245 and Ovechkin just blew him up. Ovechkin however is a freak of nature, a magical scorer with a nasty streak a mile wide.
tmi3rd's thoughts on today's games....
First of all, a signature win by the Russians over the Czechs... they needed their stars to step up, and they did. Malkin was superb, and Ovechkin decided to play a more enforcer-type role. It worked perfectly, and it took Tomas Vokoun to keep the Czechs in the game.USA-Canada... the US needs to play a perfect defensive game, and the lineup shifts Ron Wilson has made are intelligent- adding power and grit to all lines. I expect Patrick Kane to have a reduced role precisely because he's a defensive liability so far.
The Canadians seem a bit nervous, but that means little- they'll be buoyed by a Superdome-esque home crowd. If they stay out of the box, they'll be tough to beat tonight.
US-Canada 7pm eastern (now it looks like face off is 7:40) on MSNBC. Unlike football, there's no Olbermann anywhere in sight. Hockey 1- Football 0.
Oh and congrats to Jack M. and NASCAR...they appear to have been able to run their event today without a 2+ hour delay due to a pothole. Well done guys. And look, Jimmy Johnson won. There's something new and exciting.

The Russia game was pretty good. Good hit on Jagr by Ovechkin. He always tries to do that to Malkin too, but he hasn't gotten him yet. He never tries to do it to Crosby though - probably because Crosby would drop the gloves and Jagr and Malkin don't.

Please. Someone about half his age owned an abassador of the game and you are ready to worship it?
Ovie is going to have his career cut short by an enforcer one of these days. If he doesn't hurt himself taking a run at an opponent.
He's a stud, but might be more of an on ice bitch than Crosby - Who is more of a Prima-Donna in my book than a cheap and/or petty player.
The US has a decent chance of pulling out a win later...but I'll be worried if Miller starts bleeding early. He has a bad habit of being streaky on the goals against.

okay, let me interrupt these awesome games to recommend a movie.
EDGE OF DARKNESS with Mel Gibson. Good, almost great, f'n movie.
If you like movies with a tragic hero, an ordinary guy, who not only fights back, he turns the tables, you'll like this movie. It's sad and it's thrilling. But this movie has something that most movies these days have...
An ENDING. This movie has a proper ending, not that bullshit ending like No Country For Old Men. The people in Hollywood are so inept and so full of themselves they don't know how to make a full movie, and they don't give a shit.
Edge of Darkness is a full movie -- beginning, middle, and an end. Good writing. Good direction. And great acting. See it. I give it a solid 8/10 stars.

No not at all. The obstacles overcome by the USA in hockey team in 1980 were almost insurmountable...hence the "Miracle" moniker.
The Soviet hockey team were all Red Army types who did nothing but play hockey as a career. The US team was a bunch of college kids who had just a few months to get it together as a team. The US had just been through 4 years of Carter, while the Soviets were expanding their influence.
Watch the movie Miracle, its awesome.

Oh yeah great movie. I even bought it. And I remember that night.
I guess my question would be better written, was the US supposed to get beat tonight or was it evenly matched?

Some fun, eh?
Tonight, I really thought the Canadians outplayed the US team, and Miller was the difference.

Let's be kind. Canada had home ice. The most awesome team since the Soviets in 1980, or at least since the last Olympics.
Shit happens.
Although I do recall what gracious winners the Canadians were when they beat the USA in the last Olympics. Or whenever.

True the Canadians controlled the play most of the game but the US was quicker to loose pucks.
Rafalski is normally Lidstrom's blueline mate in Detroit, but Lidstrom takes more shots. I wonder if Babcock will think about splitting them after Rafalski's scoring in the Olympics. The US defense is playing loads of hard minutes and the extra day off and one less game will help.
Good day of hockey, and one more great game to go.

They are an older team, and playing without TV time-outs is a big change for the NHL guys (all of them on Canada and USA) but it appears as if the younger players adjust to that better than the older players.

Just for a moment of clarity- bear in mind that once Canada gets past Germany, it appears they get to face a rested Russian team. And as far as gelling goes- you and I both know Brodeur hasn't looked sharp in his two games. Is Babcock willing to start Luongo (or, IMHO, Fleury) over Brodeur? And does Babcock have the vision to move someone other than Richards up to the first line so that Iginla can stop doing his patented disappearing act?
Canada has the best players whose last names aren't Ovechkin. Do they have the coaching staff necessary to back that up?
Posted by: tmi3rd at February 21, 2010 08:00 PM (u+G1L)
USA: not as old, but the old guys were the stars. Goals for Rafsalski (2), Drury, and Langenbrunner.
But I thought this tourney was a Canada-Russia showdown. Ha-ha!
Love 675's comment about the extra game needed to gel as a team. Watch out for Seidenberg, Goc, Sturm, Greiss, and Ehrhoff. Be a shame if you guys went on a 2-games losing streak!

Posted by: MrCaniac at February 21, 2010 09:17 PM (Vol3D)
Brodeur is not the goalie he was twelve years ago. Career stats aren't worth a cuss if he can't deliver today. He came into the Olympics off a bad run of games in the NHL, and he is still off form and just about everyone I know is hoping Luongo gets the nod for the next couple of games. I'd have to agree with Team Canada coach Babcock that this might be a good thing for the our boys to have to play extra games -- hopefully things will start to gel. But frankly, my more realistic hope for hockey gold at Vancouver is with the ladies. I just hope the men's team can make it to the podium.
Posted by: Scott at February 21, 2010 09:35 PM (oxnT9)
We have Sweden and Finland in the same group and if memory serves they finished 1-2 at the last Olympics, so they didn't use results from then.
I gather they use win-loss in the group and then goal differential for the next step, the bracket. Does anyone know who is #2 if US is #1?
Posted by: Robert at February 21, 2010 09:55 PM (cd6Ip)
Shades of 2002. Wouldn't give up hope yet if I was you. Canada does seem to pick guys who were great, instead of are great.
Nieds and Pronger look so average out there. Pronger is slooooooooooow. Don't know what Brodeur, arguably the best puckhandling goalie ever, was thinking on at least 3 opportunities with the puck.
Never thought I'd see Patty Kane push Brendan Morrow off the puck.
Just hope that game against Canada wasn't the peak of the USA's tournament.

If Sweden wins by 5 or less they are number 2. 6 or more they are number 1 and US is 2.
It's a big difference...#1 gets the winner of Switzerland-Belarus in the quarters. The #2 seed plays the winner of Slovakia and Norway. The number 2 seed will have their hands filled with Slovakia.
The US really, really wants to be number 1, though Switzerland isn't a walkover.
Posted by: DrewM. at February 21, 2010 10:03 PM (9B5OK)
US gets number 1 seed, will play winner of Switzerland-Belarus.
Also, can't face either Russia or Canada until gold medal game.
Wow.
Posted by: DrewM. at February 21, 2010 10:14 PM (9B5OK)
But the whole thing is nuts if you ask me. Seeding based on results from the worlds is fine for most sports, but not all the NHL plays. Nuts.
Further, Finland is through to the quarters and how does this happen if they are #2 in the group? Nuts.
Posted by: Robert at February 21, 2010 10:18 PM (cd6Ip)

Yep, the US Semi would be either Czech Republic or Finland (if seeds hold).
Got get past Switzerland first, not a given.
Posted by: DrewM. at February 21, 2010 10:32 PM (9B5OK)
3 groups + 4 byes = best second-place team gets a bye, too. An odd number of teams (9) can't play win-and-in quarterfinal games, which is what otherwise would have to happen, unless you drop the worst team or worst 3 teams from the medals round altogether.
As I understand the seeding, Team USA can't play Sweden until the medal games, either. They are in the best possible shape they could be: quarterfinals versus a more banged up Switzerland/Belarus that played the previous day and semifinals versus Finland, Czech Republic or Latvia. I doubt it will be Latvia.
Posted by: cinyc at February 21, 2010 10:35 PM (cetfb)
They now end up with a bye, on the weak side of the draw, and if I were them I'd sure take my chances on that side than against Sweden, Russia and Canada.
They sure didn't look good in this game, for a top team, and I do not see a downside to them losing this game.
Posted by: Robert at February 21, 2010 10:39 PM (cd6Ip)
Nope, if Finland had won they would have been the number 1 seed.
Posted by: DrewM. at February 21, 2010 10:40 PM (9B5OK)
By losing Finland likely gets Czech Republic as their 1st game.
There's a big difference in those two games.
Posted by: DrewM. at February 21, 2010 10:42 PM (9B5OK)
Posted by: Robert at February 21, 2010 10:50 PM (cd6Ip)
Nope. Had Finland won in regulation, they would have been the #1 seed. Both teams would have had 9 points, but Finland would have had a better goal differential than the US (at least +10 vs Team USA's +9). That would have pushed Team USA into the 2 seed to potentially face Canada or Russia in the semis, anyway.
Finland probably would have had to deal with Sweden or the Czech Republic as the 4 or 5 seed in the semis if they got past Switzerland/Belarus. (Assuming Latvia lost the 5 seed - which could have been either Sweden or the Czech Republic, depending on how many goals Finland beat Sweden by).
If I were Finland, I'd rather have the #1 seed and play Switzerland/Belarus to get to the semis than have to face a very tough Czech team in the quarters. (Again, assuming Latvia loses their play-in game).
Posted by: cinyc at February 21, 2010 10:50 PM (cetfb)
It is true that this way they have a tougher quarter, but no really strong teams in the semi's.
If I were them, I'd still take the US or Norway in the semi's rather than Russia or Sweden.
And I'm still not so sure they didn't dump.
Posted by: Robert at February 21, 2010 11:02 PM (cd6Ip)
The Swedes and Finns are neighbors and natural rivals. The game was a rematch of the 2006 Olympic gold medal game, which Sweden won. There was absolutely no reason for Finland to just lie down in this game. They wanted to beat Sweden as much as Team USA wanted to beat Canada.
Posted by: cinyc at February 21, 2010 11:04 PM (cetfb)
I don't follow what you're saying. After the first two games today, Russia would have been the #3 seed no matter what. They ended with 7 points, 6 for wins against Latvia and the Czech Republic, plus 1 for their overtime loss to Slovakia. If Finland won, both they and the US would have had 9 points. Finland would have been #1 due to a better goal differential; Team USA would have been #2. The best second-place team team (Sweden or the Czech Republic, depending on the score of the Sweden-Finland game) would have only had 6 points, unless Sweden lost in overtime, in which case they would have had 7. But if Sweden lost in overtime, their goal differential would have been below Russia's (Russia +7 versus Sweden +3), so Sweden would have ended up with the #4 seed with 7 points.
By my math, had Finland won, the only teams that would have switched bracket sides would have been Sweden and the USA.
Posted by: cinyc at February 21, 2010 11:14 PM (cetfb)
1. Canada, +110 (11/10)
2. Russia, +250 (5/2)
3. Sweden, +600 (6/1)
4. USA, +860 (43/5)
5. Czech Republic, +1300 (13/1)
6. Finland, +1350 (27/2)
So, if you can avoid Canada, Russia and Sweden, you've done a good thing.
Posted by: Robert at February 21, 2010 11:35 PM (cd6Ip)
Hee hee.
I don't know much about hockey, but I do know that when we score more than they do we're winning!
I watched it all. Thought it was funny after a bit. The Canuckleheads got frustrated. They started playing the man instead of the puck. The Yanks kept ignoring that shit over and over. The Nucks ended up looking freaked out and desperate. As soon as they started riding on our guys' backs and breaking their sticks, I knew it was over.
And that's my big hockey commentary. Take a picture. It'll be another 30 years before I watch hockey again.
(Excluding the upcoming games.)

That's where it all started. Then the biggest diver in the history of the NHL, Forsberg, starts whining on the ice for a dive on an obvious trip. It all blew up from there, the whiny NHL fans, despite not really having any proof, used that to fuel their hatred.
As for team Canada, Yzerman made a mistake taking Marleau and Thornton... those guys disappear for big games, see any San Jose playoff run ever... not only that, he should have went back to Luongo instead of Broduer who blew.
