USA Wins Game But Referees Don't See It That Way
— Ace

Ummm...

Almost a game I was happy to watch... and then this happened. After going down 2-0 early, the USA rallied back to a 2-2 tie and then scored the winning goal.

But they got Galaraggaed.

Background on the reasons for this idiotic call at Allah's joint. And what was the claimed foul? The ref won't say. You'll just have to take his word that something happened here.

Just when I open the door to soccer...

It's not just that we tied when we should have won, of course. It's a confirmation of the suspicion that the game is kind of nonsense in the first place.

That idiot at The Nation (and NPR) whined that if the United States was doing well at the World Cup, all of us wingnuts would rally around them and root our little fascist hearts out.

Well, yeah. I'm not a fan of competitive swimming but if an American is doing something historic, you betcha, I'm a fan of swimming for a week and a half.

He says this like it's a bad thing -- as it's somehow wrong to cultivate an appreciation of a sport not based on the sport itself but out of patriotic sentiment and wishing your fellow countrymen to do well.

Anyway: Good job, Team USA. You won the game. Most anyone can ask of you.

18 Reminds me referees of the game in the olympics, between America and ussr for gold in basketball.  I believe it was around 1972 or 1973, not sure.  It was the first time America lost a basketball game in the olympics because of the call of the referees.

19 The goal was rejected because the guy broke the offside rule, simple as that.
I know it's hard to grasp for non-soccer fans, specially in such a close game, but the rule is simple:

You can't be closer to the goal than the ball and an opposing team's player other than the goalie.

It's explained here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiwmR6CC0Bk

It's not some dark conspiracy or whatever, it's just the rules. The US tied, be happy with that.

28 It was a great goal, and the Ref was right there too.
That would have gotten him killed in several South American countries.
But the US ate it big time in the 1st half, so there's plenty of blame to go around. The question is - which team do we have 1st half's  or second?
And the Brits tied so those points would have been nice to advance.

most Soccer experts are ripping the call, guess they're wrong? let's get 1 thing straight, FIFA needs the US to play well to have any hope of Soccer growing and getting more popular then drunk europeans, but I don't think it will ever happen because well, US will never win FIFA

Posted by: YRM at June 18, 2010 01:57 PM (38UQ3)

31 FIFA is a nice, nice UN type organization where they all sign kumbya and everyone get along. Choice of SA was 100% political and with the focus on Africa you can't be surprised. Soccer will always be an acquired taste and moves far too slow for Americans- football, hockey, basketball all move faster with more scoring. So the ref inserted themselves in the match and blew the call- not the first time, nor the last. Left send Obama to fix it...perhaps he could stay behind....

I know it's hard to grasp for non-soccer fans, specially in such a close game, but the rule is simple:

BS.
The ref did nothing until after the goal. Then oh foul, but I won't say why. The real reason of the foul was vague and deliberately so. Making something up based on tapes after the fact is BS. You could watch any goal, by any team, in slow motion and find a foul somewhere to call. That's one of the reason you don't review penalties in American Football.

95 but really folks. its a wholly different game besides the similar name. i dont mind watching soccer all that much, doesnt really bother me in the least. and our british/euro 'homies' on this site need to know we mostly bash soccer because the lefties over here act like numnuts over it. that being said, i hafta say to any englishman who may be reading these comments....

....your team was suckin today. whats goin on?

96 Sharkman, that was an illusion. Howard didn't move because he never had a chance. He came out to cut down the angle and no one covered the man with the ball. That much space and time in hockey or soccer is absolutely deadly. It was the US' fault. Just not the Keeper's.

97 College world series coming up this weekend .
A game played by real athletes who ,,,gasp ,, use their hands .
Do I watch two of the top teams in the soccer world play to a 0-0 tie or watch American baseball players in their teens and early twenties attempt to hit 95 mph fastballs 400 ft.
There will be no ties .
No fake injuries .
No comparison .

It's like hating American Soap Operas but bragging about how much you love the telenovelas on Univision -- it's the same damn thing just in another language. It's just stupid. It's like claiming the magazine "People en Espanol" is somehow more high-brow than "People" magazine.

Well usually the women on those are hotter than the ones on soap operas.

OK, I don't know shit about soccer other than the fact that it doesn't much interest me.

But... umm... one of the Slovenian players more or less had one of our guys in a bear hug, and the US gets called for an unspecified call on an unspecified player after a goal?

Yeah, I don't see myself getting emotionally involved in this sport anytime soon.

109 I won't bother to read the comments. Look, the World Cup is effectively the UN Sports Channel. There's no way the US will ever get a fair shake, as seen by Americans - the other teams and referees have it rigged. It's not a sporting event, as much as how the rest of the world's countries exist: with openly blatant corruption for the political consequences of referees' calls, along with the next game pay-backs for simllarly acknowledged slights Hey, the rest of the World hates the USA, more than our Precedent. Together, they'll do everything they can to change the rules in mid-play, and grid us down. World Cup Soccer is openly biased and corrupt - as such, it serves as a valuable training ground.

Enh, I'm actually hoping Slovenia beats England and Algeria beats the US.  Not that I particularly want the English or us to lose, I'm just in favor of anything that makes a tournament look lame.

It'll never happen, but my dream championship game would be North Korea against New Zealand.  The collective "Awww, who gives a fuck, we might as well go to work today" from every soccer fan on the planet would be amusing.

Posted by: Fa Cube Itches at June 18, 2010 03:14 PM (kmEfr)

114 If the ball is open behind the last defender and you outrun, out maneuver, out play that last defender, then you cannot be offside. It does not matter if the ball arrived by kick as a pass or a field clear or even a throw in. It only matters that the ball gets there before you do.

And now for another secret of soccer - there are no do overs. What the ref rules stands. I've seen many games ruined by incompetent refs interrupting the play, taking the momentum, and NOT COUNTING THE NUMBER OF PLAYERS ON THE FIELD.

Good job team USA. We know who won the game. That's what's important when you go to sleep tonight.

116 nonesuch at 116 is right. FIFA has always been a corrupt organization. Team USA getting ripped off by referees is nothing new, in fact I've come to expect it over the years. I'm fresh out of outrage about it since it's been going on for so long.

Team USA should do what we used to do when a ref was blowing calls. We would play the ball wherever the ref was and ram into him, kick the ball at him, slide-tackle him, fall on him, and target him at every opportunity. It never took long for his calls to become fair. Soccer can be very physical - try taking a free kick to the face or getting elbowed in the face every time the ball gets near you. Start "accidentally" beating up referees and the BS calls will stop...guaranteed.

as it's somehow wrong to cultivate an appreciation of a sport not based on the sport itself but out of patriotic sentiment and wishing your fellow countrymen to do well.

I've heard numerous libs express their dumfoundedness at the backward concept of "patriotism."

So I guess they don't get the concept of "family ties," either.

For some reason people seem to think that if you like soccer you hate football, basketball or baseball. It is just a different viewing  experience, thats all.

Just because some crank obummer commies hate everything american it doesn't mean soccer is part of anti american sentiment to destroy typical american culture and sports.

It could be if commies or islamists hijack and politicise the sport like they try with every thing that will serve their purposes. They only can if people let them get away with it.

Even the NFL would not let Rush become a owner of a team. Now how pussy commie is that for your taste?

139 I think the call was dangerous play for too many man on the ground. I counted five of our guys who got wrestled to the ground. Two others eluded their captors and one of them scored. Was it Donovan's ball? Perfect service. Re: The World's Game. It's a minor sport in the US, China, and athletically hapless India. 3 billion people say big deal- and that's three countries who don't have to play anyone to get in to the World Cup.
