Utah Getting Redder?
— Gabriel Malor

Wisdom from PowerLine's Paul Mirengoff in response to WaPo's Kathleen Parker:

Parker's answer is: "if good-faith conservative legislators such as Bennett fail to pass muster, who will be brave enough to legislate?" But legislation is not an end, it is a means to an end. For conservatives, the end is a society characterized by free markets, limited government, and individual liberty. Thus, conservatives quite rightly will tend to vote for those candidates who most consistently stand for these principles.

Parker is fretting because it's looking increasingly likely that three-term Utah Senator Robert Bennett is about to lose the Republican primary to outsider Mike Lee. A lot of that has to do with Bennett's vote for TARP. He also supported a healthcare reform proposal with an insurance mandate. Parker laments the loss of "good-faith conservative legislators" like Bennett.

But there is no get-out-of-the-primary card for "good-faith" politicians. He did some things that conservatives in Utah don't like and now he's getting the hook. Good for them. That's why Senators aren't elected for life terms.

Parker also re-writes the TARP debate, whining ""Would all those running against TARP now have voted against it had they been in Washington with the full weight of economic collapse on their shoulders?" All of them? No. (But I'd hope they'd learn from their mistake.) Some of them? You bet. Many people opposed the TARP, including me.

In the end, Bennett's high ACU score doesn't mean anything if his constituents want to put an even more consistently conservative senator in his seat. In red state Utah, they can do that. There's no Tea Party spoiling this race. That's got to be frustrating Parker without end.

14 Good morning Vic..

While Hank was whipping up support to bail out his friends at Goldman Sachs before the new regime took over, I was actually writing pieces in a local news mag opposing bailouts.

Federal law requires that bankrupt banks actually go into receivership-that law still remains. It worked well in the savings and loan debacle. Hank with the help of others, ignored existing law and sold taxpayers out.

I found myself in a shitstorm trying to defend the law, and thus free enterprise capitalism that allows failure and pain when you fuck up. Those are consequences. If Utah wants to rid itself of a guy with no spine who ignored existing law, good for them. And fuck you Kathleen Parker for second guessing them.

15 Why does anyone keep pretending that Kathleen Parker is a Republican?

Experimentally, for a week or so, watch all the news and comment coming out of the GOP — the Party officially, its administrative and fundraising subsidiaries, its elected officials (except Ron Paul), its big-media mouthpieces, everyone actually in and of the Party — and pretend Kathleen Parker is saying and doing all of it. I predict you'll find the profile fits, and nothing is out of character.

She is a Republican. Maybe you shouldn't be.

That other senator from UT needs to go too, for his ass-kissing to dead Ted.

RedState has been all over this.

From now on the standard should be the same as the Democrats: No compromise, no help, no credit to/for the other side.

You want to name a major Republican bill that any Democrat crossed over to support against his/her party? Right. That's the new game, make them play by their rules.

17 This woman (Parker) is a fifty-something adolescent with an eighth grade Student Council candidate's view of politics.  Supporting Bush on TARP was bad judgment on Bennett's part,  made worse by his initial signals on where he stood on health care.   Bennett's problem is that he has been in Washington too long, to the point that he has been thoroughly Washingtonized.  He focuses on the short term "deal", but cannot see the long term consquences of those deals.  Utah is right to want a fresh approach to governance.

18 KP: "...who will be brave enough to legislate?"

Hmm. So does this mean that the endless parade of unread and unreviewed laws by ignorant people intruding into our lives will be stopped? Does it mean that only when an issue is readily supported by the vast majority of voters such that even legislative cowards will step into the breach and respond responsibly? Um, yeah, I'm not really seeing a problem here.

In conclusion, KP, go pester the Progressives for a while. Your Republican facade is tiresome.

As a Utah resident, let me throw in my two cents.

Bob Bennett is not a bad Senator.  However, he does not adequately represent his constituents.  Senator Bennett is center right, and his constituents are much more conservative, and thus, the voters of the State of Utah have the final say with respect as to who represents them.

Kathleen Parker makes it sound like Bob Bennett is entitled to his seat in the Senate because he is a 'good faith conservative'.  On the contrary, the people of Utah are entitled to their choice of representation, and if that isn't Bob Bennett, that is determined by the voters, not Kathleen Parker.  If there is a lesson for legislators to be gleaned from this, it is "Represent your constituents".

24 I remember how, in 2008, a bunch of media figures were crying because of a bunch of supposed moderate Republican Senators (Lizzy Dole, John Sununu, etc.) were defeated.  Of course, the media never referred to them as moderate before then.  You're alone a moderate Republican if you just were defeated.  Sort of like how liberals try to use Buckley and Reagan quotes to attack conservatives.  Of course, five minutes ago (or a decade or two, as the case may be) the leftists were calling those same folks right-wing racists.

Anyhow, this article reminds me of that.

25 I realize this may be just stating the obvious, but for people like Kathleen Parker, their problem is that they're just scaredy-cats. They're cowards frightened by their own shadow. The idea of a Senate and House that changes is bad enough - it's worse when it changes based on the shifting mood of the unwashed masses. People like Parker want everything calm and even, and that extends into not confronting our opponents when they need confronting, and not daring to label anyone as our enemy. These people must not be allowed to lead, and must not be allowed to influence public opinion beyond their little NYC parlor-rooms.

I dunno, to me it looks like Kathleen Parker declared herself Obama's housecat in 2008. Every now and again she has to remind her masters to refill her supper dish, so she lets out a pitiful little meow like this one.

Of all the battles Kathleen Parker could choose to fight, she chooses this one. She's not on our side, however you define "our". But then, she knows she lost her credibility with the Right a year or two ago.

30 Never bought the argument for TARP. Still think it was and is a huge payoff for those with power and influence. It is classic example of the oligarchy is motion. Too big to fail means the government has to subsidize it and back its debt and Fannie and Freddie shows how well companies are run when they don't have to worry about doing a great job. They become a warehouse of graft and political rewards and it ultimately puts the country right back into risk and suddenly even more companies are deemed too big to fail. Too big too fail means it's too big to exist so let's just get rid of it and take the hit. No one said life and the economy was going to be all penny whistles and Moon Pies.

It's hilarious that Kathy sez Utah voters should basically confer Senator-for-Life status on Bennett, because he is beloved by:

1. Newt, who lost control of the House almost as fast as he got it.

2. Rove, who helped GWB adopt that oh-so-clever "First, don't lower yourself to their level by defending your policies too hard, and then second, actually imitate theirs." strategy.

3. Romney, who helped build the Masshole HealthCare plan, and then doesn't have the guts to point to it's failure as a warning.

Kathy must have fallen asleep in "Tea Parties, the Significance of " 101 again and just cribbed some Dem's notes.

The Republican party doesn't need the country-clubbers - they just provide cannon-fodder for the MSM and the Donks (birm).  And then, when they get frustrated that even though they are rich and famous, they aren't in the cool kids crowd yet, they provide key votes and "bipartisan" cover for their agendas!

Another way to say it is: fuck 'em and the horse they rode in on.

47 I'm not going to pretend that Bennet not getting reelected won't have some consequences for Utah; he IS on some powerful committees, and has helped Utahns get our fair share of federal funds despite being one of the reddest of states and therefore despised by the people in power. And he's done some good things for Utah, particularly in the rural communities. That being said, Utah voters can't let a fear of not getting our fair place at the government trough keep us from doing what's right. Bennet's been woefully out of touch with what his constituents want on a bunch of key issues; if the way he votes and the bills he backs don't reflect what we want, there SHOULD be consequences. It's time for ALL senators and congressmen to realize that. Saturday will be very interesting, that's all I can say. I'm not a registered republican so I don't get to vote in the primary, but I'll be watching to see if he squeaks by or not.

48 I'm a resident of Utah, and I and many other teapartiers attended our precinct caucuses to elect delegates to the county and state conventions.  In my precinct attendance was up from the usual 6-8 to 36 this year.  Similar results occurred throughout the states.  The result was that 60% of the delegates at the state convention this weekend are first-timers.  If you're tired of the establishment Republicans forcing candidates like John McCain down your throat, you have to become involved at the primary or caucus level.  Conservatives have to take over the Republican party from the bottom up, starting with precinct chairs.

At my precinct caucus, another rap at Bennett was that when he first ran for office he promised to serve two terms and step aside.  Here he is running for his fourth term.  It's time to hold politicians to their promises, whether they be in our party or in the opposition.

Number 4?

Bob Bennett. He had knowledge (or should have) of the stupid practices and other shennanigans because he was on the housing committee. I don't remember him stepping up to the mike and shouting a warning.

I also cannot wait for Orrin Hatch (6th term, IIRC) to get defeated. He's entirely too comforable in office, as is Bennett. Career politicians are a hazard to the Republic.
