— DrewM There's been some low rumblings about this for while but Utah is not exactly the media capital of the world and Bennett isn't the most high profile Senator in the country. Now it's done.
Three-term Sen. Bob Bennett was driven from office Saturday by anti-incumbency rage and hostility toward Washington, becoming the first victim of the rising discontent. The three-term senator was bounced from office on the second round of balloting, failing to finish ahead of attorney Mike Lee and businessman Tim Bridgewater, who move on to the final round.
If neither Bridgewater nor Lee receives 60 percent of the delegate vote they will square off in a June 22 primary.
Bennett becomes the first Utah senator to fail to get his party's nomination since Democrats tossed out Sen. William King in 1940 over King's opposition to the New Deal.
When the results were announced, there was a huge ovation with shouts and yells of "He's gone! He's gone!" Delegates leapt to their feet, and embraced and waved "Do Not Tread On Me" flags.
You know who this benefits? Not Mitt Romney. He showed up today to speak for Bennett. That didn't work out so well.
This isn't blind throw all the bums out type stuff.
The opposition to Bennett is specific, and can't be chalked up to a general anti-incumbency fervor. Neither of Utah's two Republican congressmen are at risk of losing their seats, and Republican Gov. Gary Herbert doesn't have any serious challengers. Is anyone really buying the 'balanced budget amendment' crap? Guess not in Utah.Bennett is under fire for voting to bail out Wall Street, co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill mandating health insurance coverage and for aggressively pursuing earmarks.
Bennett tried to reassure delegates he is a fiscal conservative.
"You want to get deficits under control. I have authored bills to rein in the entitlement spending that now makes up two-thirds of the federal budget," Bennett said. "I've already voted for a balanced budget amendment three times and I will again while making certain that it won't be turned into a tax increase for Democrats. Our tax burden is already too high."
Some delegates, who tend to be more conservative than other Utah Republicans, are also upset he's still in office after initially promising to only serve two terms when first elected in 1992.
Freshman GOP Congressman Jason Chaffetz from Utah knows the score.
There isn't a revenue problem in Washington DC. There is a spending problem!
Normally this kind of thing would scare me a bit. I mean Bennett isn't the most fiscally conservative guy in the world and going much to the right of him would mean nominating someone not likely to win but, come on, it's Utah. Why not throw an insanely hardcore conservative out there? It's not like they are going to lose. It's Utah.
This might serve as a warning shot not so much to moderate conservatives in swing states but moderate conservatives in conservative states (hello Lindsey Graham!) that they need to get with the program.
Before we get to that point, we'll get lots of hand-wringing from MFM types about 'conservative purity tests' and how if a guy like Bennett isn't welcome in the GOP the party is doomed! Of course, they'd curse Bennett if he was reelected as another conservative drone but that's just because they are intellectually honest like that.

ok, since I used to be a dem I am not familiar with much of the GOP's long term incumbants.
Is this a big deal?? and since this is UT, I am correctly guessing and hoping that a good solid conservative will be replacing Bennett??
Also, I appreciate that someone left Gov. Jan Brewer's website, but there is no place for donations, does anyone know where I can donate to this lady, I want to see her elected in November. TY!!

This is what conservatives should be doing: challenging during the primary/caucus process to try to get conservatives nominated, rather than simply refusing to support RINOs in the general election.

Inconsistent, no? One says it's anti-incumbent rage, the other that it's not. In fact, the second is correct. Bennett's opponents identified some particular things he did wrong: TARP, health insurance mandate. It's not that they don't like incumbents. It's that they don't like the compromises this particular incumbent made.
Also, he's not the "first victim of rising discontent." Stupak, Obey...those names ring any bells?
Whoever wrote that first article is an idiot.

Not at all. The whole Abramoff affair was small potatoes and had nothing to do with the actual running of the government. Too many conservatives bought the MFM's bullshit about Abramoff and think that there is any comparison between that and what the dems do (which affects actual governance and rapes the Constitution and American values).
The Abramoff affair was like a kid shoplifting gum from a store, versus the dems' armed robbery and shooting of hostages in that same store. No comparison, whatsoever - and it is sickening to hear people claim that Abramoff was anything more sinister than that. People are fooled into believing lots of things.

they are pushing back against the socialistist demon's rat's party and pushing back against any conservative-lite repubs.
the thing they are pushing back against in anyone who participated in bring this country to this point, deeply in debt, more beuracratic crap layers, calling everyone a freaking racist for wanting laws enforced, treating the US Constitution like toilet paper, bailing out failed companies rather than letting them fail, intruding in every freaking part of our economy, instead of fighting for the american people fighting for their own careers!

But the recent turn of events bizarre involves the mathematically challenged True Believers who think certain "pure" cons with little money have a chance against massively funded, imperfect cons (meaning nearly all of them), who already have endorsements from right-to-life and NRA type groups. Sure, it's good to hold folks' feetsies to the fire, but at some point clarity and logic have to penetrate the fog. Why damage a strong candidate when your favorite has no chance? (Crist is a special case - he's no longer likely to caucus with Republicans, so he's effectively a Dem, again.)
Also, note the uproar over Palin's endorsements. So far she's had a good record there, picking winners. She may lose on McCain, but that's not totally a loss for her since her loyalty carries major impact in the political sphere. How much impact and where? Consider this: JDHayworth, if he wins, need feel no inherent sense of loyalty to Palin. Fine. But look at all the others she has endorsed. Her proven loyalty (to McCain and to the vets running for the first time) will help keep those endorsees on her side. I suspect the vision of recent winners, enthusiastically endorsing her in 2012, will look a helluva lot better to the voters than some poor guy that has to strongarm, deal, and spin endorsements out of thin air.
One more set of points about JD Hayworth: If he wins, he goes in knowing full well she had to endorse his opponent to maintain this strategically valuable loyalty factor, and we all know this. Further he's not running against any positions held by Palin, so there's little room for him to claim leadership of any movement on that basis. (Also, Hayworth is neither "new," nor an outsider by any stretch, whereas most of her endorsees are, which is of greater value to the Tea Party folks than just Throwing The Bums Out.) So his value to the Tea Party movement is not what some folks would like to think.
So the purity Cons need to remember: Baby, bathwater, it's not all the same.
Disclaimer: I'm fine with JD, and even DeVore. I also agree that Duncan Hunter would look great in the Oval Office. But I also want to be a 20-year old rock musician with a lifetime of disgusting behavior before me. I'm not gonna claim you are insane for telling me it won't happen.
(Again.)

Seriously -- this is great news but I can see the mainstream Republican leaders fighting this trend like a stubborn mule. I don't mean to be a downer but it seems that no matter what we do they insist the only way to succeed is to be Democrat Lite. Bennett's the dirty porker in Berkshire Hathaway's pocket who didn't show up (along with Kit Bond of MO) to filibuster the Senate endless bailouts financial reform bill. Someone else said it: he made one too many deals with the Dems. If he was gonna be like that, he should have just joined them to begin with. If he pulls a Specter or Crist move, he's showing his true blue colors.

That is decent reasoning for normal times. These are not normal times. This nation is just about to go under (it is highly likely that we are beyond the point of no return, already) and the only chance of saving it is with a last ditch effort to right the direction of the increasingly monstrous federal government (which Bennet was supporting all the way, as either of his amnesty vote or his attempt to have the federal government impose an individual health insurance mandate would have been more than enough to toss his ass as far away from DC as possible). As Sun Tzu would advise, the GOP must be put on death ground for the coming election. That is the only way to have any chance of seeing them fight for the nation. Otherwise, dickhead traitors like Lindsey Grahamnesty will help the Indonesian Imbecile and his Washington junta destroy our nation - literally. This is a last stand. Make no mistake about it. This nation will surely not survive dem rule, or even dems and dickhead RINOs.

Also, slash bureaucratic overhead. Every line of federal law reduces the efficiency of American business in the global economy. Yes, some of it is necessary. Much of it is not.
And I would also think implementing a fast track program for power plants, refineries, and energy acquisition projects would not only provide a small number of immediate jobs, but a permanent positive effect on the job front overall.
Manufacturing, and to a lesser extent the tech sector, have a major expense in the cost of energy. Reduce those costs and they have room to expend into more markets or improve their market share in existing markets - both of which mean more jobs...

Posted by: Jim in San Diego at May 08, 2010 08:48 PM (oIp16)It's just the 60's being replayed. The same arguments from the same idiots about the same imbecilic ideas. The difference, sadly, is that in the 60's the radical leaders were running around doped up in the streets causing problems and laying bombs here and there (per The Precedent's buddy). This time, the radicals are holding all of the levers of actual power. That ought to scare everyone, because this will end the same way the 60's ended, except that you can multiply the 60's by 10000 to take into account that those who will come crashing down will do so from inside the beltway and will be taking America down with them.
This was all readily apparent in the Presidential campaign. America had a psychotic break from the credit crisis and, in their despair and confusion, America decided to go for national suicide by electing the 60's radicals to run the country. It will end very badly, but it will not be a surprise. Those cities that burned in the riots of the 60's will be child's play compared to what we have coming. Child's play.

I agree with the sentiment, but disagree with the implication. Reality bites, whether in normal times or not. For example, Palin's endorsement of Fiorina puts a fork in DeVore's candidacy. He's done. Now either Fiorina wins, or the seat stays Dem.
This is simple math. It doesn't matter if DeVore's supporters like it or not. It's done.
Palin picked the winner who will owe her. Made sure she was certified in the right issues, and made the decision. It will pay off for Palin, and the anti-Palin types will have a helluva time making the case Palin is a RINO. That puts them in the fringe, whther they are "technically" right or not.

I don't think Palin has anywhere near the power you assume she does. Her endorsement is not a seal of approval, of any sort. She screwed up royally supporting McShame and her support of Fiorina is another mistake. The Tea Partiers are not going to follow her blindly.
I like Palin. I have since she came on the scene. I have defended her many times when the most of the right was confused or against her (as with her decision to leave the governor's job in Alaska) but I don't really care who she endorses. I would guess that my thoughts are not uncommon among the Tea Partiers and conservatives (not "conservative pundits" but actual conservatives).
Hayworth should beat McShame and then he should go on to win the seat. Regardless of Palin's awful mistake in supporting the worst republican in the Senate - and someone who MUST be forced out. The "loyalty" argument makes no sense. I don't care about Palin's personal friends or personal obligations. McShame is a danger to this nation and a total shithead and cannot be endorsed by anyone who calls himself a conservative. I let Palin slide for that - and for her FIorina mistake - but I don't forget them. Palin just makes her endorsements worth less and less each time she does this. Frankly, her endorsements mean absolutely zilch to me. All they do is draw some national attention where it might not have been before.

My favorite Ayn Rand quote:
"Production is the solution to the problem of survival."
We have a bizarre mindset here that's killing us. Here, prosperity is seen as something for the rich. In India, seeking prosperity is viewed as a duty of all husbands. Thus, the general populace is cool with the notion of prosperity, even for the lower classes. They instinctively feel a rising tide lifts all boats.

Your premise is that she doesn't have the clout I think she has. I don't see anyone with her fan base in politics right now, and that includes Obama (when you factor out ACORN and SEIU).
The result is that you may not like her choices, but you have an incredibly tough sell convincing folks she's a RINO. You'd have to be as powerful as Rush, Glenn Beck, and <insert favorite here> combined, to convince enough people you are right. And for what?
That's the problem the purists face. For what? To go down in flames and get a salute for a fight (almost) well-fought?

ok I know you've blown up at me before over my decision to back McCain over Hayworth but do you honestly think a guy who was voted out of office, has favorables worse then the dems running in the state can win that election if (God forbid) he gets the nomination? Hayworth wins and dems take that seat, I'll eat crow if it turns out I'm wrong and he goes all the way (and he won't be my favorite GOP senator if he does) but he'll destroy any chances/hope we can take back or even the senate.
btw can we please stop w/ this McShame, McLame crap? this man was a POW prisoner in Vietnam who refused to return to the states unless his comrades came back with him, costing him more torture. I know he's satan himself to the base (which I've never understood, if anyone should be treated that way it should be Graham), and he has done things to piss me off, and yes I only voted in 08 because Palin was on the ticket, but damn let's stop treating the man as if he was some ACORN endorsed guy, Crist is more deplorable then Mac.
I know this causes most morons to declare war on my position (just as my position on the Puerto Rico statehood thing did), but I have to say my peace. this "purge the GOP" thing is something we should have done during the 90s, we can't afford it these days w/ the Obama administration.
when the base starts crying "RINO!" at Palin, Coburn, or even freaking Rubio over 1 or 2 disagreements with them it worries me this purist attitude is going too far, I do think the time for guys like Mac to go has come but do we really have to replace them with the likes of JD Hayworth?
and thus I prepare for the backlash for daring to defend McCain, something I thought i'd never be doing after the election

I'm not trying to convince anyone that she's a RINO. I don't think she's a RINO. I just think that she has made some questionable decisions in the past (as with her temporary foray into global warming, where she tried to thread the needle when she should have been pounding the global warming idiots over the head) and has made some big mistakes in who she's endorsing. But, I like Palin. I just don't care about her endorsement for anything. I don't trust her endorsement - to be more specific. I don't see how anyone can trust the endorsements of someone who backed McShame. If some conservatives aren't bothered by that, good for them. But, I have to imagine that no Palin supporters would actually vote for McShame in the primary. That is the point I am making.
>>>That's the problem the purists face. For what? To go down in flames and get a salute for a fight (almost) well-fought?
>>>What a frikkin' waste. We need to win control to be able to repeal Obamacare. You don't do that by losing important battles. Everyone was so happy about Brown's win. Now it's long knives. For what?
Posted by: K~Bob at May 08, 2010 09:17 PM (9b6FB)
You mistake my view of the current situation. I'm not a purist. I have some very simple deal-breaker issues - which every conservative should have. That's all. THis country hangs by a thread, and cannot stand the same sort of stupidity that we could stand 15 years ago. There is no margin of error, this time. We have no credit left and there is no faith left in our federal institutions. That is the situation and people ought to realize that. They'll know, soon enough, as credit crisis 2.0 hits us and there will be no expensive bail-out to buy time. The next time the monetary system cracks, it breaks ... and too many people don't understand the real hell that that entails. And that is in addition to the powerful forces that are driving this nation towards dissolution, or at least toward a bloc of states seceding.
Like I said before, America voted for national suicide on Nov 4th, 2008. That is being played out, as we speak. The only way to stop that from coming to fruition is to recognize the dire and dangerous nature of the situation and actually change it.

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota (caucus), Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin... 17 States.
No Democrat primary will be held unless someone runs against Obama.

I think we're on the same basic page, then. I'm fine with Palin's moves so far because they work, from a strategy viewpoint. It's like a General having to accept some losses from the guys doing a feint. Sucks to be those guys, and ethicists argue about that shit till hell becomes full of <insert favorite religion here>.
But tactically, she's doing the right things. Think about the tough decision of DeVore over Fiorina. Frankly, both are weaker candidates than we need. Something has to be done. Palin is being eyeballed by all political operatives to see which way she leans in every friggin' race. So her choice matters. I'm glad she chose, period. Not so much that it was Fiorina.
And I just disagree on her clout. Her fan base is bigger than anyone else's, and that makes for clout. It's how Obama got elected, despite being a terrible debater, and throwing everyone under the bus all the time.

No offense taken, YRM. I don't know how badly I blew up at you over supporting McShame - though I don't recall the specifics but I would guess that it might have had something to do with trying to claim that anyone who questions the Indonesian Imbecile's eligibility is a loon (if you didn't say that, I apologize, but that usually sets me off).
The point is that this nation is at a point that calls for a different attitude, or it will go down in flames. Literally, in flames. I know you probably think that's hyperbole, but it isn't. This nation is looking down the barrel at a world full of pain, unless drastic measures are taken. As I have often said, I think it might even be too late for that, anyway.
>>>Prog doesn't call people by their proper names or

Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at May 08, 2010 09:29 PM (mHQ7T)
If you think that chances of secession are not real, then you are just unaware of what is happening. You also seem to have little understanding of what actual monetary collapse means, and what it means for the dollar, versus other little currencies that we have seen it happen to in history. There is no historical parallel for the US dollar. If the dollar goes, it takes much of the modern world with it and will end up with totalitarian states in many places and chaos in others.
But, you support passing out US citizenships to illegals (who already have other citizenships) like they're going out of style ... and if you get your wish, US citizenship will go out of style. So, I don't expect you to really understand the dynamics of nation-states that are at work and the threat we face from their collapse. You don't seem to like the notion of nation, to begin with.

That's my main problem with McCain.
It's not so much that I disagree with so many of the positions that he takes, it's mostly the fact that he digs in and wields a tremendous amount of power as a long standing Senator.
Oh, and I truly believe that he is an idiot.
I'm not just name calling here.
I know that he is ignorant about many of the issues that come across his desk, so are most Senators. No big news. They take a lot on that they shouldn't and can't.
I just doubt that he is even educable in the basics.
He has lived a very weird life (if you think about it), almost all of it, in or under the Federal Government.
He is institutionalized to a degree that most of us can't even comprehend.
So, he reacts to any issue placed before him with his gut.
And his gut tells him the best way to game the system.
His gut, his instincts, are oriented towards the State and he is a master, neigh a prodigy, at playing that system.
But he has no experience, whatsoever, of life lived as most do, outside the purview of a departmental budget.
And he is old, and cranky, and apparently was a piss poor student at Annapolis when there was a chance that some of his fundamental ignorance of the larger world might have been ameliorated in his tender years.
Meh.
John McCain is a weirdo.
As an Arizonan, I have long been aware of the fact that he has no idea what most normal people (those that are not Senators or really interested in paying for Senators) do trying to live their lives.
He just kind of pops off now and then about issues in the same way that his ignorant daughter does and largely, for the same reasons.
Meghan McCain is silly and shallow but harmless.
John McCain is just as silly and shallow as his young daughter but he is dangerous.
He is an entrenched Senator with a lot of power.
That's a problem.

It's like voting for Alex Jones. How much support can you see that getting in a GE? In a sane world, these purists would stay home on election day -- and thank you people for Obama! But to vote for a joke candidate like Hayworth? You're voting for a Dem.

How is Hayworth a goon? Is he Conservative? Is he more Conservative than McCain.
McCain's unwillingness to back GW Bush has greatly harmed this country.
George W Bush was very very centrist. Or to be more accurate, Bush was willing to compromise. McCain shit on him by pandering to the MEDIA for FAME-SAKE.
We are taking our country back. McCain in NOT Conservative. He's been there for 30 years. Times up.

*** "Bennett is under fire for voting to bail out Wall Street, co-sponsoring a bipartisan bill mandating health insurance coverage and for aggressively pursuing earmarks." ***
The underreported part of the story is that he also voted for amnesty in 2006 (not sure what he did in 2007). The Lamestream Media doesn't want to point to the fact that amnesty is a political liability.
By the way, I live in Utah in a senate district that his son, Jim, ran in in 2006. I called Bob Bennett's office and told him I would be taking his support for amnesty out on him and his son. As it was his politically well-connected son didn't even make it into the primary. But I haven't forgotten that vote, haven't forgotten that call, and haven't forgotten that promise.
Good riddance, Bob.

With the Tea Parties and McCain's history, Hayworth still isn't ahead. It seems to me that perhaps Arizonans are taking a good look and realizing that someone who lost a Congressional seat is not a good choice.
Whatever happens, happens. It would be a shame to lose that seat to a dem. Hayworth's a risk, no doubt about it.
However, I don't live in Arizona, so I am simply an observer. I will support whoever ends up with the nomination.
(As an aside, one would think that the recall effort against McCain mounted back in 2001 would have taught him a lesson. It was going swimmingly, and only suspended because of September 11. I think that McCain's reverting to his usual behavior is why Hayworth has had the success he has had. )
One would have hoped that in the entire state of Arizona there could have arisen a better candidate than these two. We need to ask ourselves why grifters and nutballs end up as viable candidates.

Bush did plenty of damage to the Republican party and to himself. McCain paid for his gripe against Bush in 2008, so that score's been settled.

In 2006 - a very bad year for Republicans. Hayworth is running on a pro-enforcement agenda, in a year where enforcement is very much in the news, and where being a Demcrat is a severe disadvantage.
Besides, these are the types of risks well worth taking. Immigration enforcement is absolutely essential to putting this country back on track, and it's damn clear McInsane won't do it.
A McCain defeat, following a Bennett defeat, will put Congress on notice.
Posted by: CWilliams at May 08, 2010 07:01 PM (tBrQI)
You ignore that in both cases, Hayworth and the Republicans deserved to lose. If a more compelling alternative to McCain was in the primary, I would be interested. But voting out of spite is silly.
Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at May 08, 2010 07:03 PM (mHQ7T)
A bad year for Republicans? It was only two years after they won the White House. They lost the majority because of people like Hayworth. And in such an allegedly bad year, McCain stayed in office. Easily.
Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at May 08, 2010 07:05 PM (mHQ7T)
Tattoo - losing McCain's seat to a Democrat is not really losing a seat, per se. It's just losing a seat held by one non-conservative to yet another non-conservative. Given that Republicans will pick up several seats this fall anyway, his vote as a "Republican" to help a filibuster will not be needed.
If you think McCain's a conservative then a debate is useless.

(Okay, I know that Rodney Glassman is running only because I am one of the 15 people who actually have followed Tucson City government enough to know that he was a jack-ass City Council member before he resigned to run for Senate.)
Seriously, most people in Tucson don't know who the hell he is.
I can't imagine that he is running around AZ and impressing voters with the fact that he served on the Tucson City Council.
Gimme another name.
Who is the likely Dem challenger for this senate seat?

One interesting thing about Bennett is that he looks and talks exactly like the aged Mormon leaders the 90% of GOP delegates who are Mormon have spent much of their life listening to and being taught to idolize. Well, not only does he look like one, but his grandfather was one - Heber J Grant, the president and prophet of the LDS Church from 1918-1945.
But they tossed him out just the same.

Hey, bub.
You are ignoring the fact that I'm going to have to go to the polls to vote on a pretty important ballot initiative, and as a relatively new registered Republican, this will be my first time when they ask me whether or not I think that John McCain should be the candidate put forth by Republicans to represent AZ in the Senate.
I'm gonna have to say no to that.
Hell, I never voted for that bastard but once, against Obama!
Even when I was young, and pretty much a-political, John McCain convinced me to first register as NOP.
I knew that I wanted nothing at all to do with the Dems but I also knew that if John McCain represented the GOP, I could pretty much figure them to be assholes too.

I got quickly schooled about being potentially rude to big power players and how that is frowned upon.
I had no idea who this dude was.
My main take-aways (at the time) were that, getting elected to City Council can't be all that hard and that the people that I were with were probably idiots to be so deferential to an obvious jack-ass because of a title.

Except that he lost his House seat in 2006.
This election will get national attention. McCain was our nominee last year. He graciously lost to Obama, but he has consistently opposed his agenda from the beginning. The Democrats, if they win his seat, will use this to portray a national endorsement of Obama's policies.
They have a decent candidate right now in Rodney Glassman. Even he could defeat Hayworth, and his endorsing birtherism will motivate their base. The immigration issue will also accomplish this. Hayworth cannot go up against the DNC machine. Experience has proven this.
Meanwhile, you see McCain's long tenure in the Senate as a liability. He has long-standing ties throughout his district that have gotten him elected time and again, and the national Republican apparatus is a nightmare now. A candidate that would replace McCain in such a high profile election will have to bring their A game.
Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at May 08, 2010 08:22 PM (mHQ7T)
He is good-looking, young and diligently goes out and shakes hands. That you don't remember meeting him three times is irrelevant. He's doing the work of campaigning, and he has a good team put together. Democratic leadership is 100% behind him.
The best thing that can be said of Hayworth is that he's not McCain. That's not enough to carry the day.

Uhmmm, no.
Rubio came from relative nationwide obscurity based on a pretty impressive record at home.
Rodney Glassman is a completely different animal.
He is a walking, talking, example of mediocrity that the voters of Tucson allowed in deference to his family's money and connections.
Seriously, he has done nothing but embarrass himself.
I'm sure that he will get all of the usual Democrat union drones to vote for him.
But they are not going to be motivated to vote for this jack-ass.
So, a good test, no?

In 2008, 56% of Hispanics / Latinos supported Obama and 41% supported McCain. In 2004, Hayworth received almost as many Hispanic votes as his Democrat opponent, with each receiving about 48 percent; but in 2006, Hayworth lost 59-36 percent in Hispanic precincts. His comments will do him in. He is a well-known local loudmouth who will rally outright opposition.
It's not about how great Glassman is. It's that he is good enough, and Hayworth is very much disliked. An easy win is plenty of motivation.

And, I don't remember meeting him 2 times, not three.
On his third, he made an impression.
As a tremendous spaz.
I was amazed when I learned that the extremely socially retarded were being employed as City Council members.
There is a reason why he is pretty much never interviewed on local live TV.
Actually, now that I think about him as the, probably well-meaning, spaz that he is, I kind of feel bad for him.
Who the hell ever told this poor fool to go into politics in the first place?
Who told him to go into National politics ?
That's fucking child abuse.
I don't care that Rodney Glassman is "technically" an adult.
I'm going to hold the Democratic Party responsible for destroying the life of one of our "special" citizens.
Posted by: Deety at May 08, 2010 09:04 PM (aVzyR)
You're hardly the one to tell me anything. Elections are really simple. You get more people to show up for your side than your opponent. Even if Glassman is a lightweight and a "tremendous spaz," he will have more people motivated to vote for him than Hayworth will. It's exactly the kind of win the Democrats need to kill the grassroots momentum of the Tea Party, and it will nullify the immigration issue. It will be portrayed as an endorsement of Obama's policies in general, a rebuke to the recent Arizona law, and McCain and Palin will still be brought into it. The MFM will call this a Coffee Party victory.
That is all the incentive Democrats need to show up and vote. Hayworth will not bring in enough Republican support. He does not have strong support that is sufficient to defeat the Dems. He has lost to them before. It has nothing to do with Glassman.

How? In Congress, Rep. Hayworth's extreme views on immigration were so bad that he was the only Member of Congress to object to the draconian "Sensenbrenner" bill in 2006 - a wide-ranging crackdown infamous for its intent to make felons out of both unauthorized immigrants and the religious and service workers who assist them - for not being harsh enough! The "too-soft-for-Hayworth" Sensenbrenner bill is widely seen as the catalyst that spurred millions of people across the nation to pour out in the streets in protest, a tradition that has evolved into the May 1st immigration and workers' rights rallies that we know today.
In fact the momentum created by these events was certainly one force that drove such a high percentage of first-time latino voters to the ballot box last November, flipping four states from red to blue.

PPP has McCain ahead by 46%-35%. A Rocky Mountain poll gives McCain a much heftier lead of 54%-28% against Hayworth among Republicans and independent GOP primary voters.

The Republicans will have their hands full cleaning up one helluva mess when they retake control of Congress, and, well, it's wishful thinking, of course, but I sure would be pleased if they would take up another issue; term limits for everybody in Congress.
I don't think that our country's founding fathers imagined that people would make a career out of being in Congress to feather their own beds.
If there were term limits, people in Congress would have an incentive to enact their agendas and to get their legislation passed before their terms ended, instead of dragging their feet to give their constituents another reason to keep them in office, and we would get people with fresh, new ideas every few years. Some of those old farts haven't had a clever, new idea since they first tried to figure out how to get laid.

I hope Boehner is smart about this like Newt was in '94 and comes up with a fast moving plan to sell to the public before the election. He could even say, "We're going to have another 100 day push like back in '94 and get x, y, and z done. But since we have so much more to do, it's going to be the 180 day plan."
That was a nice bit of politics on Newt's part. It made at least part of the process digestible in nice, easy chunks that sounded good to the public.

And recall the fallout from those protests, where hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens and their la raza supporters marched through American streets carrying Mexican flags. It was a coup for our side.
I don't care if Hayworth winning the primary causes Democrats to take the seat. It almost certainly won't happen, because in an electoral wave parties seldom lose seats they already control. But I don't care if it does, because McCain's not a conservative, and I'm tired of his conservative bashing schtick. He's running harder and nastier against Hayworth than ever he did against Obama. It just proves that all his holier-than-thou, above-the-fray crap is just a pose. He's perfectly willing to get mean and nasty...when he's running against a conservative like Hayworth or Romney.
The point is that elections mean something, and in this case one very important part off that "something" is enforcement of our immigration laws. This country simply cannot afford immigration at current rates, and it sure as hell can't afford 12 million illegal aliens and their offspring (at 3.75 children/woman). It's killing us. See California. And Arizona. See the high school where 5 boys were sent home for wearing American flag shirts.

Rove and Gingrich recently formed a committee of the best and the brightest, who are already putting together a strategy to retake Congress in the fall.
Oh, yeah. Good. That only bothers me to the extent Rove is not a conservative. He pushed Bush to pander to the social cons (not real conservatives) while they expanded government... faster than a thing that... expands all the time, really fast.
I'm also a master of simile.

I don't care if Hayworth winning the primary causes Democrats to take the seat.
Dude. Dude? Dude.

Developing...
The McCain camp is hinting at a major endorsement coming soon. If it turns out to be the Lace Wig industry, as rumored, it would virtually assure his re-election.

In the last thread, someone told me I was a master of hyperbole. I said, "Thanks. I also have the largest penis."
I'll be here all week. Try the veal.

I'm impressed. A mixed metaphor, a soliloquy and hyperpole in one 6-word sentence.

Four states flipping from red to blue is a coup for the Democrats.

Just preparing you for the inevitable narrative should a Democrat win his seat. When Scott Brown won in Massachusetts, it was pointed out how that was Ted Kennedy's seat and a referendum on the healthcare bill. The AZ election will attract national attention and be used to demoralize the Republican party. The Democrats will milk it for all its worth, and they're dying for a candidate like JD Hayworth. Imagine Michael Steele getting this loser elected Senator. Look at Hayworth's website. Listen to his craziness. It will be a bloodbath.

That's right. TARP, as stupidly flawed as it was and as abused as it became (the minute after it was passed) was still something that, at least in its initial lying claims, was well within the purview of Congress - as the integrity of our monetary system is Congress' responsibility. People can disagree over how stupid the original TARP was - and it was stupid and ridiculous and insane and never intended to be restricted to the monetary system but was clearly going to leak into the economic framework - but that vote was not a killer for anyone.
Bennet's problem had more to do with his insane attempt to bring his own kind of federal health insurance mandate (for which he should have been immediately run out Congress, as he evidently doesn't understand jack about the Constitution and the federal government's powers and limits) and his desire to push amnesty (for which he should have been immediately run out of Congress, as he evidently doesn't understand the concept of national sovereignty and was aiding and abetting an enemy invasion).
Bennett deserved to be tossed out long ago. He's a slug. He should just switch to the dem party, where he'd feel much more at home, as they are the ones who cherish the idea of an unlimited federal national government and the total destruction of US sovereignty.

We are talking about $2000 he received from Abramoff on behalf of the Indian tribes, well guess what the tribes were his constituents. One must forget the political climate at the time with the jerk from Florida and Abramoff being pushed by the Dems AND people like McCain. So take your crook and goon talk and shove it firmly up your WAZOO. J.D at least was one of the most dependable conservative votes in congress, unlike McSHAMNESTY!

It's too bad that McCain doesn't have another challenger
aesthete Monday, April 19th at 9:27PM EDT
John McCain sucks: IÂ’m pretty sure that I donÂ’t need to elaborate on that statement. JD would be a marginal improvement, in that he would be a reliable party vote in a way that John McCain has never been. That said, heÂ’s not the rock-ribbed conservative that he is often portrayed as being, and heÂ’s not a particularly good or bright spokesman for our cause. But aesthete, I thought that this was AZÂ’s backlash against McCainÂ’s moderate, spendthrift ways! Well, not quite: CWÂ’s fantastic work notwithstanding, almost all of the Tea Parties in AZ have refrained from endorsing, and all of the members of AZÂ’s Congressional delegation (including Jeff Flake and John Shaddegg) have endorsed John McCain? Why is this? For that, you have to look at the votes:
1) No Child Left Behind: I won’t crucify JD for this one, since most of Congress willingly swallowed the cyanide pill, but saying “everybody does it” really doesn’t befit our erstwhile conservative champion, now does it?
2) Sarbanes-Oxley Act: Here’s another one of those “everybody (except Jeff Flake) does it” votes. Long story short, they’re a stack of regulations in response to Enron’s failure. The bill was, as George W. Bush put it, “the most far-reaching reforms of American business practices since the time of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.”
3) 2005 Highway Bill: Yep, the pork-laden travesty of a bill that included the “highway to nowhere” was voted on by JD. I don’t have too much of a problem with pork, but JD’s stated reason for supporting the bill was that it had a trifling amount of money dedicated to border security. This answer later changed to the same one Ron Paul's using.
4) Medicare Pt. D: Et tu, JD? Yep, our Conservative Hero voted for the largest entitlement since the Great Society, and still gets away with calling himself conservative. Wanna know how bad it was? Not-even-McCain-voted-for-it-bad, thatÂ’s how bad. Call yourself what you want, but if you canÂ’t bring yourself to vote for such a nakedly expansionist government policy, I would argue youÂ’re, at best, a conservative in the European sense.
5) 527 Reform Act: Here’s an interesting one. After voting against McCain-Feingold, JD voted in favor of the 527 Reform Act, which closed up some “loopholes” in the original legislation, and was arguably more unconservative than the original. What was the difference between the two? One was supported by leadership, the other wasn’t. Since this one’s not so well known, here's a helpful fact sheet by one of the principal architects of the bill, Russ Feingold.
Just because you guys love lists so much, hereÂ’s another one of things that JD did that are of a questionable nature:
1) The questionable ties that JD had with corrupt lobbyist Jack Abramoff are not worthy of indictment in and of themselves, but should give conservatives pause: he was the top recipient of funds from same. While weÂ’re on the subject, using PAC funds to get a six-figure job for his wife wonÂ’t get JD on any good-government lists anytime soon.
2) Similarly, ties with nuts of all sorts have been part and parcel of JDÂ’s career since becoming a talk show host in AZ. One of these groups has been birthers: he has called for Obama to submit his birth certificate for public inspection, and has generally danced around the issue whenever he gets called on it.
3) He signed off on a term limits pledge, which he later broke as a Representative, and now signed off on one for his Senate campaign.
So there you have it: itÂ’s a battle between a party hack whoÂ’s peeved by illegal immigration, or John Bipartisan McCain. There is no Tea Party candidate, and itÂ’s up to you whether or not you want to waste your money on Bill FristÂ’s dumber brother in your bid to unseat McCain.
“The whole modern world has
divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of
Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the
Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected.”

“To be ‘cured’ against one’s will and cured of states which we may
not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet
reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with
infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Hayworth double-crossed the Republican party worse than McCain ever did. Either Shadegg or Flake might have beaten McCain but they arenÂ’t running. JD lost his seat in Congress in a pretty conservative/libertarian district to Harry Mitchell, because the folks in CD05 were sick of listening to JD whine. Nothing about JD has changed. HeÂ’s well known around the state, and heÂ’s neither liked or respected by a huge segment of the electorate.
McCain wants to win and will do what it takes (yeah, I know, why didnÂ’t he do that against BO) and call in whatever favors he needs to in order to win. He may not be particularly well liked - especially on the right - but heÂ’s respected. This race is nothing but mental masturbation for people who should be focused on races Republicans can win and seats we can take from Dems. For starters we have three House races - including JDÂ’s old seat - that we can win here in AZ. I suspect a lot of these paleocon trolls here who become unhinged at the mention of McCain supported fringe candidates in the 2008 election and hate that McCain got the nomination. Go bother the Democrats or join the LP, Constitution Party or anything, if you have no interest in helping Republicans win in 2010.
