Regarding, specifically, discontinuing the Dept. of Ed., how about, when confronted, she says "The US Constitution does not give the Federal Government any power over education.  A Federal Department of Education is less effective, less responsive, and less efficient than state based departments.  I believe that the Federal Government should return that power to the states."

We do the same thing with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the EPA, and on and on.  How about we stand up for our beliefs?

It reminds me of an episode of House when House asks his buddy (whose name I can never remember) why people are always happy when he's (the friend) has just informed them they have inoperable, incurable cancer and only x months (or weeks) to live.  And his friend responds by saying, basically, they appreciate the honesty and that this way they can approach the remainder of their time in the best manner possible.

Perhaps if we stood up for ending some of these "golden entitlements" the people's response would shift more quickly (it's already starting to, I'm afraid it's just too slow) that ending these things is the right thing to do, and "If t'were done, t'were better swiftly done"

It's because we always get less then we are sold. Even most of those who would get rid of Dept of Education know that it would have to go away much the same way as it came to be. Slowly and incrementally. Which means we really want a candidate who just wants to reduce it some.

But because we always always get less than promised, we seek promises which are beyond our desires, then maybe we will get what we want.

If we vote for a candidate who simply believe in "fiscal responsibility" we get a 500B deficit.
If we vote for a candidate who promises to cut spending, we might get a budget freeze.
If we vote for a candidate who promises to eliminate the deficit, we might get a deficit reduction.
If we vote for a candidate who promises to build a surplus, we might balance the budget.

By their own habit of under performing, they set us up to demand bigger and bigger promises. If they actually did what they said they would do, or at least 80% of it, we wouldn't be looking for superlative statements just to get a good idea that we might get the moderate approach we want.

If their is a better way to figure out what someone will actually do for you in office. I'm all ears.

130 As to the polls expect them to get worse for Republicans. Why worse for Rs? Because the most people for the Rs are already off the fence.  As election day approaches people go from undecided to making a choice and that is reflected in the polls.  But polls are not election results. This is where the enthusiasm gap comes into play. That gap cost many House Rs there seats in 2006 - 08. Many of the undecideds who will break left in the polls will not show up on election day. They have an opinion if you ask them but it's not strong enough to get them to the polling stations on election day.

Bear in mind though that this is opposite of what will happen with the truly undecided who do show up at the polls. This is a small but critical number. These people literally do  not make up their mind till they almost get to the polls and they almost always break for the eventual winner. Mostly because that is there major criteria, who is going to win. They want to vote for the winner.  This year the winners are the Rs. No amount of effort has been able to blunt that.

149 It's not a strawman, Balrog.  The original post mentioned Angle's old positions on phasing out SS and Medicare.  Ace commented that candidates are always forced to retract those statements.  A handful of purity crusaders said "Defend those statements!"  Specifically, AllenG in comment 5 said "We do the same thing with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the EPA, and on and on.  How about we stand up for our beliefs?"

Well, we don't do that with SS, medicare, or medicaid.  EPA maybe. The challenge stands: has any republican ever unseated an incumbent dem with those planks? The answer is no, and the purity brigade needs to figure that out.

When has it been tried, Phil?  I don't remember even once in my lifetime that a conservative candidate has really expressed those beliefs with anything resembling eloquence.

Just saying "Yes, I do support ending the DOE" is a good way to get only that line on the news.  Responding with something more closely resembling my suggested response keeps them from doing that.  They might SAY "When confronted with the statement that he wanted to defund the Department of Education, candidate AllenG did not deny it" but they won't have any video or audio to back it up, because the actual response explains the position in a way they can't really demonize.

Fifteen years ago that would have worked.  Ten years ago it probably would have worked.  Five years ago, there was a good chance it would have worked.  Today?  With video so readily available and New Media growing as quickly as it has?  It might still work, but I'd say it's a crippled (and dying) tactic.

This is why Chris Christie is so effective- he doesn't back down, and then explains quite clearly (and without sounding crazy) why he believes as he does.

The latest poll from Rasmussen in WV shows Rease 3 points ahead. Keep in mind this is West Virginia, where democrats out number Republicans 2 to 1. Also, Manchin is one of the most popular governors in the country. This race should never have even been close. The polls showing Manchin ahead is the PPP poll - which Jay Cost said had a ridiculously high democratic turnout (higher than 08'), and a DCCC poll which is useless. The one that came out today was from a university, again, useless.

Rossi is either in the margin of error or ahead in Washington, a democratic state against a long time incumbent. Again, any normal year and we wouldn't have a chance. And do I even need to explain how rare it is for a republican to be in near virtual tie in California against a long term incumbent? And the latest Fox/Ras poll show's McMahon closing the gap. And all this doesn't include the fact that the enthusiasm gap is astonishingly huge. The democrats are demoralized and the independents who are most likely to vote are ones who are pissed at the democratic agenda.

I'm so sick of conservatives who whine and cry and give up every time a poll comes out that's not in their favor. I'll continue to do everything I can to help our candidates. Meanwhile, you can just lay "pooped out" on the couch.

You can't take every single poll as gospel. You have to look at who is doing the polling, what their methodology is, what their dem ratio is, who they are polling etc.

PPP polled 55% dems in a state that went McCain 56%. Then the poll released today by Orien/Marshall on WV that f-ed up the RCP average doesn't publish their poll--so immediately I'm suspicious. Futher investigation of Orien shows links to Kos and Salon.com. Marshall--spare me. Then Greggy sites a Ras poll in CA but not the Ras poll in WV that is positive. You have to recognize wtf is going on.

Try to track poll trends from the same pollster not just believe every libtard poll that comes out at the end. Do you see any other Orien polls? Pretty good chance that the poll consisted of the Marshall faculty.

Angle might win by as much as 5-10 points depending on how early the results from the East come out, the west is always effected by the early returns, many (like me) still believe Obama didn't win as big as he did in NV in 08, the GOP voters just knew it was over and didn't bother continuing to vote as states in the east were called for Obama

The people who would prefer some other candidate mean some other than CO but they won't have that choice on election day and most are Republicans and I don't see many Republicans staying home this year.
