Veterans Day 2010

To our readers who are veterans and all those who served our nation...thank you.

Don't forget there are other ways you can show your thanks...supporting Project Valour-IT is certainly one of them.

The Disabled Veterans of America have some thoughts on how we can serve those who served us all.

If anyone else has ideas, projects or organizations that they've worked with to support vets feel free to mention them in the comments.

Also, there's an interesting and moving post at Blackfive chronicling the change in attitudes in America about veterans from Vietnam to today. Never again can or will we allow these brave men and women be disrespected.

2 I always try to contribute to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation during Veteran's Day and Memorial Day, they do a great job taking care of the kids of fallen SOF personnel. Plus, they get kudos from watchdog groups for being wise stewards of the donations they receive (added bonus: they send retired Rangers and SEALs to beat the piss out of people that try to embezzle SOWF funding...)

He served over 31 years TAFMS in two separate service branches in three different wars. 27 To my late Daddy, USAF Major and Korean War vet, my Dad's dad, who died before I was born, U. S. Army Lt. WWI, recipient of the Croix de Guerre, and in honor of my kid the Jarhead.

28 I was thinking about the group of bad boys I served with back in the long ago. Of the dozen of us, 2 are dead by suicide, one is still a bush vet, and the rest made it OK. The suicides were over women of all things, the bush vet was a misanthrope back then anyway.

I won't say it was the best time of my life...that would be when my family circus was young....but I do remember every day of it.

I got an opportunity to thank the Canadian vets last weekend. It was Poppy Day there while I was in B.C.

Our high school marching band, one of the top bands in the nation, has spent its entire season honoring the military.

I haven't seen a HS band competition in a while. The gradual addition of the crosses made my eyes water.

35 My son has been thanking soldiers since he was big enough to say the words. It's something his father and I feel very strongly about.

Today his school had an breakfast assembly and invited veterans and soldiers of families to attend. As I sent the boy off to school, I told him "there will be soldiers at your school today, you know what to do?" He said "Yes, I say 'thank you for your service'" He's a good boy.

36 So my colleague here is retired Navy. Yesterday, one of his friends (who is also retired military) walks into the public library, where he asks if the library will be open on Veterinary's day. "We don't close for a rinky-dink holiday like that." was the reply.

The library is about to get the full force of shit hitting fan.

I like to participate in this company's Cup of Joe For a Joe program (would've linked the FAQ page, but the URL is apparently an annoying unbroken string of text). They run cafes on military bases, and have a program through which troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan can sign up to receive drinks and messages of support from folks back here in the States. A COJ is two bucks, and you can donate any amount you'd like. On holidays the company matches all donations dollar for dollar.

I have a file full of messages from the service members who have been my recipients. A two-buck cup of coffee seems like such a small thing, but, according to these messages, it's a nice little morale boost. I highly recommend it!

51 A historical note: there are only three surviving veterans of World War I: two are British (and one of them is a woman) and one is an American. There is one more surviving veteran, a Pole, who served in the WWI era (defined as ending when the Treaty of Versailles was signed).

Thank you to all veterans. My brother was a combat infantryman in WW ll. I make a spacial effort to thank him for his service. He in turn thanks me. He and his outfit liberated Czechoslovakia as the european war ended. They then went on to occupy Japan. My hackles raise ever time some revisionist liberal rant about the US and Truman using the A bomb. I am proud of the citizens of the US who show overwhelming support for out service men/women. I will never forgive the spitters and catcalling Vietnam protesters. They are still amongst us, a silent cancer.
