VFW Dissolves Board Of Its Political Action Committee
— DrewM

Endorsing liberal Democrats over honest to God war heroes wasn't exactly a winning plan. After much outrage the National Commander of the VFW has decided to withdraw the appointments of the PAC Board of Directors.

It is now evident to most of the VFW leadership, both National and especially the departments, that the VFW has been subjected to extreme negative publicity throughout the nation, and the recent endorsement decisions have, in fact, harmed the VFWÂ’ s reputation and future ability to fulfill our mission.

I cannot let this erosion of public support for our great organization continue. The apparent lack of the committee to address these concerns will lead to a proposal by me, as Commander-in-Chief, to amend the by-laws at the 112th National Convention for the purpose of dissolving the PAC. Meanwhile, under the authority granted to me as Commander-in-Chief in section 619 of the VFW National By-Laws and under section 620 of the Manual of Procedure, I am withdrawing all PAC appointments effective October 15, 2010.

One vet that the VFW took a pass on endorsing and instead endorsed the non-vet Democrat is Iraq and USMC vet Nick Popaditch.

I'm not sure how close this race is (it's a Democratic district) but this year just about no Democrat is safe, so Be the Wave.

13 Popaditch is running for the area south and east of San Diego, where I live, against the Tijuana border.  Normally a safe dem area because of the heavy farm vote, but who knows this year.  Filner finally agreed to debate Popaditch this Thursday, Oct 21.  Unfortunately, no "hand to hand combat" or "testicle weigh off" competitions have been announced.

Eh, he probably just realized they just sent their cash cow to the butcher, meaning no more calves and no more milk.  And so he's trying to get it back before they kill it.  I'm betting that this isn't the first year that the VFW has endorsed non-veteran Democrats over veteran Republicans.  But everyone is looking and he's playing cleanup to save the organization.

20 I'd like to know how the VFW let the PAC get infiltrated and run by fucking leftards in the first place. Those responsible should be given the bum's rush out of the door. I have spent many, many evenings with my late father at the local VFW. Drinking low priced beer and shooting pool with the other old warriors. Those were good times. Too bad leftards infected and ruined what had been a wonderful organization.

To add, it's in my home town 2 hr. east of San Diego.  The local paper is very left wing and the debate might not get much play time in the San Diego paper.

Also the east end of this district is Imperial County, which has the highest unemployment rate in the country.  The field workers have become smarter; instead of following the crops around the state they pull unemployment checks till the season returns.

Question for the regulars here at AoS:

Let's say there was a primary situation where you have two Republicans running for the nomination in a congressional race.  One is very conservative right down the line, knows his business, etc. etc. but is not a veteran.  The other is a veteran who is not as conservative.  The district itself is a conservative leaning district where either one would be pretty sure to go on and win the general, so there's no real question of "electability."

Which would you support?

Posted by: Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus at October 18, 2010 11:59 AM (+tRwn)

35 34:  Go with the con.  Veteran is a good plus, but no guarantee of quality, sadly; go with what they show.

Posted by: DarkLordOfTheIntarWebs at October 18, 2010 12:02 PM (GBXon)

36 Which would you support?

The most Conservative, vet or not.

Posted by: trainer at October 18, 2010 12:02 PM (K5X44)

37 Which would you support?

The conservative.  Not that it matters, as the VFW is in hot water for backing non-vet, non-conservative Dems.

It was a buyoff, pure and simple. A "certain class" of veterans are for sale, cheap. They were a major factor in Germany and Russia in 1917, and we're not immune.

Now to be even with the board, VFW ought to PAC some cash to all the wronged opponent candidates. Then they'd earn some serious respect.

I had heard Popaditch was a good guy, but I hadn't seen him before this. That "Hathaway shirt" he's wearing just earned him 50 bucks from my personal PAC. I'm a longtime fan of Hathaway shirt guys. Kids, look it up.

Also, a Marine put an AFA clip in his ad...now there is a man who plays well with others.

The VFW needs to get out and tell the media why they dissolved their PAC: why the canidates endorsed were not worthy of endorsement...then I might respect them again (although I'll always go to the local hall for cheap beer and excellent conversation).

This was bullshit.

42 Which would you support?
The conservative non-vet.  Problem was, the VFW PAC endorsed candidates who were neither conservative nor veterans, when there were candidates available for endorsement who would have filled the bill quite nicely.  I expect this kind of thing from industry PACs; from a group of war veterans, not so much.

This whole thing really gave me a case of the ass.

If it was the intention of the douche bags on the VFW PAC to drive a spike through the heart of the VFW, congratulations; mission accomplished.

And the stupid geezers running the VFW didn't do a damn thing about it until veterans and veteran blogs started making a big deal about it.

This organization was having a hard enough time recruiting from the returning vets of our nation's wars without this idiocy.  Now they can kiss my ass.  I will actively discourage my fellow vets from joining or in any way supporting this group.

Posted by: Swede at October 18, 2010 02:56 PM (492cu)

52 Well, you have to remember what VFW stands for...Reguardless of one's political afilliation,  endorsing a non vet who is in a political party that traditionally has a large piece of the pie who is anti-military, does seem a little strange.  Follow the money trail....political endorsements are usually open for the highest bidding.  I would like to think the VFW would be supporting a veteran over lining it's pockets,  but that is obviously not the case. When the VFW sends me their membership dues,  I have the freedom of throwing it in the trash.  That's exactly what I am going to do!

The candidates the PAC endorsed in WA, that I disapproved of, were Norm Dicks, Rick Larsen, Patty Murray and, wait for it...  "Baghdad Jim" McDermott.  No way, no how, should those people be endorsed by a veteran's PAC.  The email I received in response to my, ugh, intemperate, emails to State and National lead me to believe that they felt betrayed by the PAC as well.  I do not want to leave the VFW, and I hope that it can be salvaged.  Unfortunately, as the baby boomers gain control, things seem to always go downhill.  In my opinion.
