(More vids at Storyballoon, including Lamar Alexander's call for Obama to swear off any intent to use reconciliation to jam the bill through.)
Pretty good moment. After mentioning the Louisiana Purchase and the Cornhusker Kickback, McCain noted, to Obama's grimacing face, the deal with Phrma, in which Phrma agreed to cut costs $80 billion and run $150 million in ads supporting ObamaCare in exchange for an agreement to limit competition on prices in Medicare and opposition to drug re-importation from Canada.
Obama's answer? "We're not in campaign mode anymore."
He doesn't answer the charges. He just claims that to talk about how corrupt the process is would be unhelpful.
Unhelpful for him, he means.
Obama's Rules of Order: As noted in an update to an earlier thread, Gabe has been keeping track of "rules" Obama keeps setting down in order to secure a rhetorical advantage for himself:
1. Democrats get more time because "I'm the President."
2. Republicans may not criticise my bill. They can only talk about things on which we agree.
3. Republicans may not use the word "Washington" because it tips the scales.
4. Republicans may not use or reference an actual copy of the Senate bill. That's a "prop" and it's unfair.
And add to that 5:
5. We're not in "campaign mode anymore," by which he means McCain cannot mention his dirty dealings.
On the other hand, Democrats are allowed to introduce props -- some guy just showed a three-page Blue Cross pre-existing-condition-exclusion list -- and of course can use their favorite rhetorical tactic of telling a story of, say, Sally Mae Hirshberg, a spry, elfin great-grandmother, 104 years young, recently forced to eat cat food because her health care provider refused to cover her for the 60 cubic centimeter breast implants she so desperately needed.
Cantor... ...is definitely in campaign mode. He's talking up all the increased taxes and how that will cause people to lose their coverage.
Obama just has to sit there and take it with that pissed-off grimace.

That's right and that's why McCain is saying it now. He sure as hell never said a damn thing that strong in the campaign.
Why is he even there for the Republicans?

After a brief period of consultation following the White House health reform summit, congressional Democrats plan to begin making the case next week for a massive, Democrats-only health care plan, party strategists told POLITICO.
A Democratic official said the six-hour summit was expected to “give a face to gridlock, in the form of House and Senate Republicans.”
Democrats plan to begin rhetorical, and perhaps legislative, steps toward the Democrats-only, or reconciliation, process early next week, the strategists said.
So the Blair House Project is a partisan sham?
Color me surprised.

So a busload of B'nai B'rith delegates swerves off a Jerusalem road to avoid a goat, and it plummets into a ravine, killing everyone on board. They all show up at the Pearly Gates and St. Peter says, "Gee, I'm sorry, but we weren't expecting you, so we don't have your accommodations ready. We'll have to send you to the Other Place for a couple of weeks until the construction is finished."
Two days later, St. Peter gets a call from the Devil. "Get these B'nai B'rith people out of here," Satan demands. "They've only been here two days, and they've already raised $30 million in pledges to install air conditioning!"

We get the R's and D's to write their amendments to any bill on curling stones. Then we get the four senior pols from each party to shoot it out. Any stones in the house go up for a vote, any stones that are shot rock are approved. all other stones are tabled.
Every week we have a match and get a couple sap suckers to do a play by play so it sounds cheerful.

66 And you turdbrains question why Palin would endorse McCain. If you look at how he's been fighting this CommunistCare bill, he ain't all bad.
The problem is, like in most things, you didn't here squat from McCain until after he figured out how unpopular this whole health care nightmare bill was, then all of a sudden he's out there "leading the charge".
Look, I have a lot of respect for the man's military service, but when it comes to his politics McCain is more interested in what he thinks will gain him brownie points than in conservative values. McCain Feingold, McCain Kennedy - bills he gained a lot of fawning over by the lamestream media for his willingness to "reach across the aisle". McCain will throw all of us conservatives under a bus in a heartbeat if he thinks he'll get a couple of extra votes or a couple of extra minutes on the news for his efforts, don't doubt it for a minute.
His "I've always been conservative" rap didn't fool me for a minute in the last campaign, and I can only hope to God that the republicans don't lose their every loving minds and nominate this guy again in 2012. That's what he's angling for now I'm sure, but we can only hope nobody's dumb enough to fall for it.

What pissed me off the most in this little Dem theater preformance was when Eric Cantor was discussing specific points in the bill while referencing the actual pages where those points are in the bill. Odumbass interrupted him to slap him down about using the bill as a prop.
Well, fuck me, but isn't that what the hell this whole freakin' summitt is supposed to be about. That's what the hell it should be about...not just crap talking points. If you want to find consensus, you need to address specific points using the actual damn language in the bill, and debate the differences of opinion about that specific point.
This is nothing more than Dem talking points & the prez doesn't want to discuss the damn bill itself. The Republicans are trying to address the BILL and address specific points they disagree with. That's what a real debate should be about...not, just BS crap talking points being spewed by the Dems.

Obama is a walking talking campaign.
btw - this just in from some dude named Sen. Mike Johanns (R., Neb.):
“If the president wanted to showcase his views, he didn’t need a six-hour summit to do it,” []..... “I’d rather have seen him clear the air and announce that reconciliation is off the table — that he didn’t support it as a senator and will not support it now.”
Johanns also sighs whenever he hears summiteers eat up time with long, winding anecdotes about health care. “I don’t deny that there are people out there who have suffered — people who’ve been mistreated by insurance companies, who didn’t get the medicine they need. I recognize that. The problem with the stories being proffered today is that they seem to imply that if you pass this big government takeover of health care, then the world immediately get better. That’s just not the case. The highest rate of denial amongst the major insurance companies in Medicare comes from Medicare. You can’t spin that.”

Republicans and Teabaggers are approaching this issue from the wrong angle.
It's the same old story: Follow the money trail.
Democrats don't do anyhing for anybody out of the goodness of their heart, and they don't do anything for anybody, unless they have something to gain from it for themselves.
Figure out who will benefit financially from pushing through that legislation, and figure out who is already paying the Democrats or who is offering to pay them huge amounts of money in bribes to push through that legislation, and you will get to the bottom of why the Democrats are so adamant about shoving that legislation down our throats.
With that information, you will break the backs of the organization(s) who most want that legislation to pass, and you will kill it once and for all.
All of those politicians, including the Obama Administration, are corrupt as hell and they are all on the take.. They'll take bribes from just about anyone, including this country's enemies.

All I want is for just one Republican to say: "With all due respect, we came here to discuss the currents bills in Congress & see how we could come to some agreements, so we can get some kind of reform accomplished. I just don't see how we can do that without discussing the actual language in the bill, and what it specifically means to the American people. Mr. President I don't see that as a prop. I see that as what the American people, who are watching across the country, want to see us do...discuss the actual bills sitting in front of us, the language therein, & what that means to American citizens."
Why the hell can't anyone take their alotted time & say just that? Exactly what would be the prez's answer to that?

A doctor I spoke to is convinced that the American public subsidizes the artificially low drug prices in other countries. The foreign government will tell the pharm co. that they cannot charge over a certain amount, but instead of refusing to sell there, the company will charge the legally permissible amount and overcharge in the US to make up the deficit.
I believe it. If you have insurance and go to the hospital, you're subsidizing illegal aliens and other people that can't/won't pay. That's why aspirin costs $100.00 in the hospital, and that's why they don't want you bringing your own prescription medications when you stay. If you bring your own stuff, they can't charge you an arm and a leg for it.

Those doctors and their corporations are the ones who have the most to gain from that legislation, contrary to what their phony and deceptive whining would lead you to believe. Agreed. And the legislation being proposed doesn't address the underlying problems that need "reform" only magnifies the perks and prerogatives that these interests have enjoyed (thanks Government!) for decades x100.
A wasteful insurance system; distorted incentives; a bias toward treatment; moral hazard; hidden costs and a lack of transparency; curbed competition; service to the wrong customer. These are the problems at the foundation of our health-care system, resulting in a slow rot and requiring more and more money just to keep the system from collapsing.

McCain might make a good SecDef in a Palin Admin.
He would do better goingback to AZ to clean out the spittoons in Old Toombstone.
Of course once hired to that he would fight with the customers all day and drive off the tourists.
In short, he needs to take his sorry ass home and contemplate his sins for the last two or three decades.

Yes, and it's very simple. The US price includes recouping all of the development, investment in manufacturing plant, and initial marketing costs of bringing the drug to market: those costs are divided over the estimated total US unit sales of the drug and added to the manufacturing cost and the profit margin. The overseas price excludes all the fixed costs and just covers the manufacturing cost plus a profit margin.
Is the drug company "overcharging" the US customer? Not on the basis that it's just charging for its costs plus a reasonable profit. But the company definitely is undercharging the overseas customer by not asking that customer to pay towards the fixed costs of bringing the drug to market. If the market were to be "harmonized" by allowing re-importation so that US consumers didn't pay towards those fixed costs, then nobody would be paying the costs of developing new drugs and bringing them to market, and presto! no new drugs!

Dear DNC Forum,
I went to answer the door and there was a svelte, blonde nurse, wearing fishnet stockings and a "moveon.org" button. I asked how I could help her, and she said "Why don't we sit down together and talk about national health care?" As she spoke these words, her right hand slid down her tunic's zipper and her left hand held out a petition to send the CEO of Blue Cross to the electric chair. She said "Why don't you just look these... uh, this over, and tell me what you think?" as she slipped the petition down my pants and let her blouse fall off her shoulders. She was clearly cold, in at least two places.

The problem is not the pharma industry, or the insurance industry, or the healthcare industry. The problem is politicians who define the problem as the pharma industry, the insurance industry and/or the healthcare industry -- and then create a morass of conflicting mandates and regulations that force those industries to twist themselves into pretzels in order to survive.
The politicians care nothing for cost-effectiveness or efficient delivery of high-quality care: their only concerns are "fairness" and "availability." So, for example, they pass laws requiring hospitals to treat everyone who presents at an ER, but don't bother to worry about how the treatment will be paid for. The massive dislocation from that one unfunded mandate means that everyone's costs -- insurers, hospitals, medical personnel, consumers, employers -- go up exponentially as more people turn to "free" ER care as their primary mode of interaction with the healthcare system.

...and if you had McCain right now you'd have anmesty in place and a solidly Democratic country forever. McCain or Obama, it's just the speed of the march down the same road.
All of this has been hashed out over, how anyone could still believe that fighting obama 100% of the time is better than fighting McCain 20% of the time is beyond me. As I stated a mllion times here and elsewhere; All Obama has to do is spend us into a deep enough hole and there goes US sovereignty. We will no longer be a a force on the world stage because other countries (China) will have us by the nuts. Looks like Obama is well on his way to achieving George Soros' vision of a United States that , enabled in part by the MDS of those people who laughably call themselves "conservatives" who enlarged the crater in their couch last election day.
He will be screwing the republican national committee... 'K...
