Video: W Welcomes Home Troops [dri]
— Open Blogger

Amazing video of former president George W. Bush and Laura Bush welcoming home troops at DFW Airport last week. The look of mutual admiration is obvious in the eyes of both President Bush and the returning troops. Can you imagine this same scene involving the current president? Neither can I...

7 You know, I really really really liked the "soft bigotry of low expectations" approach and had hope for President Bush's social agenda. I am a social liberal and fiscal conservative. Sometimes I still think there is a healthy blend. At any rate, notwithstanding his approval of our legislators being a bit too, shit what's a word here..., blindly optimistic (?) and spendy (?),  "W" had class and was a great Commander in Chief.

8 Whatever his flaws, there's no getting around the fact that GWB was just a damned good decent man, a man of honor, and a man who appreciates what other have done for this country.

History is going to be very, very kind to him.

Posted by: Tami at August 20, 2010 09:33 PM (VuLos) Origins of the challenge coin in USA Like many aspects of military tradition, the origins of the challenge coin are a matter of much debate with little supporting evidence. While many organizations and services claim to have been the originators of the challenge coin, the most commonly held view is that the tradition began in the United States Army Air Service (a forerunner of the current United States Air Force). Air warfare was a new phenomenon during World War I. When the Army created flying squadrons they were manned with volunteer pilots from every walk of civilian life. While some of the early pilots came from working class or rural backgrounds, many were wealthy college students who withdrew from classes in the middle of the year, drawn by the adventure and romance of the new form of warfare. As the legend goes,[1][2] one such student, a wealthy lieutenant, ordered small, solid-bronze medallions (or coins) struck, which he then presented to the other pilots in his squadron as mementos of their service together. The coin was gold-plated, bore the squadronÂ’s insignia, and was quite valuable. One of the pilots in the squadron, who had never owned anything like the coin, placed it in a leather pouch he wore around his neck for safekeeping. A short while later, this pilotÂ’s aircraft was heavily damaged by ground fire (other sources claim it was an aerial dogfight), forcing him to land behind enemy lines and allowing him to be captured by the Germans. The Germans confiscated the personal belongings from his pockets, but they didnÂ’t catch the leather pouch around his neck. On his way to a permanent prisoner of war facility, he was held overnight in a small German-held French village near the front. During the night, the town was bombarded by the British, creating enough confusion to allow the pilot to escape. The pilot avoided German patrols by donning civilian attire, but all of his identification had been confiscated so he had no way to prove his identity. With great difficulty, he crept across no-manÂ’s land and made contact with a French patrol. Unfortunately for him, the French had been on the lookout for German saboteurs dressed as civilians. The French mistook the American pilot for a German saboteur and immediately prepared to execute him. Desperate to prove his allegiance and without any identification, the pilot pulled out the coin from his leather pouch and showed it to his French captors. One of the Frenchmen recognized the unit insignia on the coin and delayed the execution long enough to confirm the pilot's identity. Once the pilot safely returned to his squadron, it became a tradition for all members to carry their coin at all times. To ensure compliance, the pilots would challenge each other to produce the coin. If the challenged couldnÂ’t produce the coin, he was required to buy a drink of choice for the challenger; if the challenged could produce the coin, the challenger would purchase the drink. Another tradition dates to US military personnel assigned to occupy post-World War II Germany. With the exchange rate, the West German one Pfennig coin was worth only a fraction of a U.S. cent, and they were thus generally considered not having enough value to be worth keeping - unless one was broke. At any place where servicemen would gather for a beer, if a soldier called out "Pfennig Check" everyone had to empty their pockets to show if they were saving any Pfennigs. If a soldier could produce a Pfennig, it meant that he was nearly broke. Likewise, if a soldier could not produce a Pfennig (meaning he had enough money to not bother saving them), he had to buy the next round. One version of this story dates from the Vietnam war: The tradition of the coin giving dates back to Vietnam actually when soldiers would tote along a piece of "lucky" ordnance that had helped them or narrowly missed them. At first it was small arms ammunition, but this practice grew to much bigger and more dangerous ordnance as time wound on. It became then actually a dangerous practice because of the size and power of the ordnance being carried, so commanders banned it, and instead gave away metal coins emblazoned with the unit crest or something similar. The main purpose of the ordnance had been when going into a bar, you had to have your lucky piece or you had to buy drinks for all who did have it. The coins worked far better in this regard as they were smaller and not as lethal! So, if you go to a military bar, whip out a challenge coin and slam it down on the bar, those who lack one buy drinks! Obviously you have to be careful about this tradition... However, Commanders and units give out coins for this and as mementos for services rendered or special occasions.[3] This tradition spread to other military units in all branches of service and even to non military organizations. Today, challenge coins are given to members upon joining an organization, as an award to improve morale, and sold to commemorate special occasions or as fundraisers. Every Airman receives the Airman's coin upon graduation from Basic Military Training for the United States Air Force.[4] In 2008, Leatherneck Magazine gave a 90th anniversary Leatherneck challenge coin to a select few readers who sent in letters to their Sound Off section which the editors particularly liked.[5] There is another story about an American soldier scheduled to rendezvous with Philippine guerrillas during WWII and with him he carried a Philippine solid silver coin stamped with the unit insignia on one side and the coin verified to the guerrillas that he was their valid contact for the mission against the Japanese.[6]

Probably a "Challenge Coin". It's a commemorative medal specific to the leader presenting it. The tradition is that soldiers will compare coins (for things such as drinks) and the "winner" (having the higher ranking coin) is entitled to (drinks ) on the losing challenger. A President's coin would be the ultimate trump card.

They started minting them in 2007 and there are 4 presidential coins released each year.  They're gold with the president's image on them and the dates they served.  I think they're given to the troops as a sort of a presidential 'thank you' and souvenir.

Amen.  I disagreed with him at times, but he's an honest, classy, dignified man.  His critics condescend to mock him for his struggles with alcohol, but a wise man learns from, and is humbled by, the mistakes he makes in life.  Contrast Obama, who has been told from the time he could walk that he could do no wrong.  Hence the arrogance, and vacationing with the swells in Martha's Vineyard, leaving his predecessor to greet the troops

How many times has Clinton done that since he slithered out of the White House with the furnishings? uhhhh..... NONE.

The Clintons would love to slighter back into the White House.  I think they must be loving Obama's crash and burn.

Somehow "slither" seems to fit the Clintons only too well.

I can't think of a former Dem president (in my lifetime) who wasn't a terrible ex-president.  Though I think Obama should give it a shot.

On a more serious note, yes, saw this video a few days ago. It made me tear up and I was proud that OUR president W, though we didn't always agree with him, was there to meet our men and women in uniform. A class act.

The wet fart in the WH now only greets the coffins of our brave men, for a photo op. He wouldn't DARE greet our troops...they haven't been properly vetted, they aren't SEIU, and they aren't slobbering leeches looking for a handout from King Barry.

109 It has to be a simply awesome feeling to get off that plane and know that you're home and that your loved ones are on the other side of that door.

And then, to see Pres. and Mrs. Bush there among your family has to be simply overwhelming. To take home a picture and a Presidential Challenge Coin from him would be icing on the cake.

True story: My son-in-law graduated from the AF Academy in '08 and Pres. Bush spoke at the Commencement. After he swore in all the new Lieutenants, they all lined up by squadron to shake his hand. Bush was absolutely gregarious. He didn't have to do it, but he stayed there (in the drizzling rain) and hammed it up with each of them. Lots of hi-fives, lo-fives, cell-phone-hellos-to-Mom-and-Dad-in-the-stands. I'll never forget it: One Lt. asked for the American flag lapel pin off his lapel ( I can't imagine the balls it took to ask that) and get this--Bush gave it to him! Can you imagine such a treasure?

I had my share of differences with his policies, and I'm not going to say what they were because those differences aren't important now. But right from the moment he stood at Ground Zero and spoke to us through that bullhorn, there has never been a question in my mind that he loved our military with everything he had. From his Thanksgiving trip to Baghdad to his anonymous trip to Ft. Hood to this event at DFW...the man loves the troops.

Bush's silence in the face of the carping that Zero does daily speaks to his class. I miss him too.

111 thanks for the challenge coin education. I still recall watching W get choked up when he was addressing the troops on one of his covert Iraq drop-ins. That was some big brassy balls swagger......having the AF drive a 747 into a warzone so the CinC can serve thanksgiving dinner to his troops.......don't forget to vote in November. it's the second most important vote we'll ever cast. The most important ballot we will ever cast will be in 2012.  These republicans that are riding the wave this year serve only one purpose in 2010. We are hurling them into the breach.  They are being tasked with holding that breach until 2012, when we will send an overwhelming wave to smash the progressives into a fringe minority. If they shirk this duty, we will rid ourselves of these squishes and replace them with those that will gladly throw themselves into the breach in 2012. Plug it, hold it, and wait for us. We are coming in 2012.

There are some on both sides of the aisle that do not appreciate or like President Bush. They say he did "bad things" while in office. Yeah, sure, there were some things he did that I didn't agree with, but that happens. No matter what anyone thinks of President Bush, there is no denying one thing - he is truly a decent man.
