Violent crime continues downward

The so called "experts" remain baffled as to how this can be happening in a depression.

...Some experts have been hard-pressed to explain the decreasing crime when a weak economy has put a continuing strain on local police budgets...
Of course us ignorant rubes might be tempted to think higher incarceration rates might have something to do with it...but that's just uninformed crazy talk.

This, along w/the European "dismay" over their local governments' responses to the weather are perfect illustrations of the "theory" being treated as "fact".

For many, many years the line "Poverty begets crime" has been repeated, to the point of becoming a touchstone of faith amongst many(while in the real world, there never has been such a link) therefore the suprise when the disconnect is shown...

11 Actually, if you look at it closely, a heck of a lot of massaging is going into these numbers.  Police departments know that people are keeping track of statistics, so they are very careful about reporting violent crime.  A heck of a lot of things just never get written up, to keep the numbers down.

Of course there's no (significant) link between crime and police budgets.

1- Police don't prevent crimes.  They can stop a crime in progress or react to a crime already committed, but they can't (actively) prevent crime.
2- Most additional police officers end up on revenue... umm, I mean, traffic duty.

Additionally, more police cannot counteract the Laws (as in: Laws of Nature) regarding criminal investigations: the longer it takes to catch a badguy, the less likely you are to catch him at all.  This doesn't change if there are 3 cops on a case, or 30.

I've always said that the bar for qualification as an "expert" with the MFM is pretty low, basically it's someone who knows more than the reporter does. Since reporters knowledge is limited to banging on a keyboard and making dinner party plans, take it from there.

Others say that "some experts" to a reporter means "me and the guy in the next cubicle over"

At any rate, when the two words "some experts" appears in an article, consider it all to be bullshit

43 I used to compile stats for our local Sheriff's department.  There was a lot of fudging.  For example, depending on what needed emphasis, rape would be counted as either a violent crime or a sex crime.  Or, if they were arguing for more deputies, both.

Most grown-ups ask themselves why soldiers don't take the day off and travel across the country to mourn one of their fallen, the way the police regularly do --- especially if the funeral's in or near a Fun City.

67 I kind of like the idea of making prison a fat farm, in the sense of raising fatties.  High carb & fat, low protein diets.  Easy boy recliners and all the cable channels there are, especially the pr0n channels.  Get rid of the weight sets and give them, I don't know, those aerobic step thingys.  Ideally cons would come out 300lbs of Grade A lard.

69 I grew up in a poor neighborhood, we had 3 families living in one house. Our neighbors were no better off. I didn't know anyone from that neighborhood that was ever arrested. I was the most violent criminal in the area, occasionally sending an errant baseball through someone's window. My Father, bless his soul, would dutifully replace the windows. Since when was poverty a cause of crime? There is more to it than that. Children being raised believing that all authority figures are bad people. The attitude that the end justifies the means. The depiction of criminals are somehow "cool" in TV and movies. All this contributes to the crimes in our communities.

My Mom was a grade schooler when the Great Depression started and she always talks about how low the crime rate was back then, even with all that mind-numbing poverty (of course, I'd wager there were plenty of guns around, especially in urban areas which have now turned into victim zones).  Crime is a state of mind:  You have to want to do it.

The difference is that during the depression there were still family units in urban areas. With the advent of the great society families in urban areas declined and the illegitimacy rate climbed to 75%.

Offspring are now raised as feral animals in the streets. Children must be "raised" and civilized, they are not born that way. That is not happening in urban areas now.
