Waxman: We'll Push Ahead Without Stupak Language or Stupak Votes
— Ace

Is this a surrender? Is this now officially just playing to the leftist base?

Because with 25+ Democrats saying they'll vote No, plus Stupak's 12 or so... right there I think the bill fails, narrowly.

A top House Democrat says the leadership may be able to pass President Barack Obama's health care overhaul without resolving a dispute over abortion.

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman said Thursday that the leadership will try to secure the necessary 216 votes to pass the bill without reworking the divisive abortion provision.

Waxman says many of the pro-life Democrats will vote for the bill anyway.

But why would they? Not only is it unpopular, but the left is telling them "We'll appease our base in our safe districts, you slit your own throats in order to compromise your principles." The personal reaction there has to be a two-word dismissal.

Meanwhile, the co-chair of the progressive caucus says Obama isn't changing many -- or any -- minds or votes, and a top Obama 2008 campaign aide says Democrats could get "slaughtered" in November -- courtesy of the Democrats' easy-peasy-lemon-squeezey attitude towards corruption:

"I think that there is a real shot we are going to get slaughtered in elections this fall if we aren't leading the efforts to reform Washington," Steve Hildebrand, Obama's deputy national campaign director in 2008, told CNN. "We campaigned in '06 and '08, and if voters don't see that change, we haven't lived up to that promise."

7 I wonder what the chances are that some dems are saying "yes" to the leadership, but only to bring it to a vote to get it done with, and will vote "no" when the vote actually comes. That would put an end to all the chatter as well as the bill itself. Then they can all go home and tell their constituents they voted "no"

I think what Waxman is hoping for is that the pressure of actually having to be seen voting as the seconds tick down may lead to wavering Dems to wilt and side with the "yea" tally, realizing that it's for real and for keeps, and none of this "well, let the Senate deal with it now" silliness..

But, I have a feeling if that were the case, you will have a revival of the GOPers taunting the Dems who voted with Clinton with the "Goodbye" chorus.

39 If it's close they will buy the votes they need.

How?  Pelosi is sort of stuck on buying votes.  She has no leverage.  All she has is "trust me.  I'll get what you want in the Senate reconciliation process."  Only problem there is, the Senate doesn't give a dick about what Pelosi promises.  They can burn her as fast as Senator Nelson burned everyone in Nebraska and he was securing money for Nebraskans.

The as is bill is dead in my view.  These House members would have to be complete idiots to put their faith in 28% approval rating Pelosi.  She can't guarantee any members any deals.  That's why Stupak is saying no to a sidecar bill.  He knows the Senate will just screw him.

Still, I don't know what to think about the abortion thing. They can't change the language now or add anything to the senate bill. I don't even know what the negotiations around that have to do with this bill.

I don't believe that the democrats with Stupak actually have abortion convictions. They just want money.

If Nancy could make them happy with anti abortion funding language then why isn't she? The feds paying to kill babies is more important to her than this bill?

With no bill she doesn't get to kill anybody?

Something is wrong here.

Posted by: dagny at March 11, 2010 10:32 AM (ALoxL)

57 I hate to say it, but it has to be said:  If Stupak et al were really pro-life, they'd be Republicans.  The only question is, can Pelosi promise them enough -- and with a realistic chance of delivering -- to sway them?

Note that this doesn't have to be in the form of legislation; she could easily promise them nice cushy lobbying jobs to induce them to fall on their swords.  You think these guys would turn down "analyst" jobs with MSDNC, especially when they get to have their name on Teh Most Historic Legislation Evar!!! ?

God I hope I'm wrong.

Pukelosi can't & won't call a vote until the reconciliation bill language is a fait accompli.   That bill then spends as much as 48 hrs in some of the committees before it can be sent to the House & Senate for a vote.   JMO, but some of the supposed hold-outs in the House are probably waiting to find out the specific language & CBO analysis of the reconciliation bill before they commit.

Honestly, they've probably already decided how they will vote.    They're just looking for cover for that vote.   I don't trust anything I'm hearing, right now.   They've already pulled way more crap than I thought they would, and I'm cynical as hell about any of them.   I won't believe this shit is dead until it is pierced thru the heart & burned at the stake.

64 Is it possible Dem "leaders" like Pelosi and Waxman really don't think their goons are talking to each other behind the leadership's back? Might they thnk they can snow enough individual votes by convincing them others have already flipped? They lie to us, they lie to their base, why wouldn't they lie to their members?

66 Has anyone considered the possibility that while hard-Left districts are safe from Republican takeover, their Congressmutants aren't personally safe from displacement by harder-Left loonies?  When Code Pink pickets Nancy Pelosi's house, it probably signals to her that keeping her seat safe requires her to pander even more to the "Progressive" Left -- regardless of how much more difficult that makes getting anything done in Congress.
