"We make men without chests...
— Geoff

...and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."
- C. S. Lewis

And in Rhode Island the chestless man factory is in full swing:

Football matchups between private schools can create mismatches based on a variety of factors, but it's rare that a school uses fear of injury to cancel a game.

That's exactly what happened Monday, when St. George's (R.I.) School canceled a game on Friday against fellow Independent School League member Lawrence Academy (Mass.), citing a concern over the disparity in the size of the two schools' players.

Now, I'll grant that the Lawrence Academy team is ridiculously huge (3 linemen over 300 pounds), but competitive sport is all about accepting challenges and trying your utmost to overcome them. Not cowering for fear of injury.

Talk about a team in need of a Blutarsky pep talk.

5 Heh, one of the high school football teams in my area is full of Tongans. Big, BIG guys; do the haka before each game. You can almost see the other team praying - not to win - but just to survive. We only lost our last game with them by one touchdown. I was impressed, I gotta admit.

6 Reminds me of my favorite Hemingway poem (yeah, he wrote poetry):

The Age demanded that we sing,
Then cut away our tongue.
The Age demanded that we flow,
Then hammered in the bung.
The Age demanded that we dance,
Then jammed us in to iron pants.
And in the end The Age was handed
The sort of shit The Age demanded.

14 If the St. George school administrators are so concerned about injury, then they should just eliminate the football team altogether.  Someone might get hurt during a practice!  Oh and cancel baseball and basketball and all the sports too, along with all the Phys Ed.  Oh and don't forget to cancel the chemistry labs and the biology labs and the physics labs - those are dangerous - and the art studios (do you know what those paints are made of?), theater and music classes (someone might trip and fall into a piano!), the English and history classes (carpal tunnel from all of that typing), the math classes (all that chalk dust inhalation from writing on the board), foreign language classes (you're causing psychic harm by focusing on all those oppressed foreigners), the lunch program due to all the unhealthy food.  I guess that just leaves study hall, but Lord only knows what they'll be studying.

But, but, it's just not fair that some football players (or other sports players) are bigger or better than others!  I wonder what will St. George's basketball team do if they come up against players that are a few inches taller than them, cut and run?  Will their new mascot be the Flying Chicken?

Seriously, I played HS school football, both sides of the line (offensive and defensive lineman).  I'm not a big guy, only 5'9" and about 215lbs back then.  I guaran-damn tee you that most of the people I was matched up against were taller and bigger than I.   Did I complain?  Hell no, I loved the challenge.  I did my utmost to overcome my adversary and help my squad achieve victory.  And the other people in my unit that had the same size disadvantage against their opponents felt the same way.

I have to say that if the entire team is grossly outsized then they were most likely right in calling the game. The ones who made the mistake were the coaches who set this game up in the first place.

The whole point of school sports is to give the kids a chance to play and improve. There are going to be winners and losers, but you don't want to send a team out to be slaughtered either. You are going to get onesided games to be sure (which is why we have the 50pt rule). Good coaches though throw in their JV before that happens(that is the way our head coach handles things and he has 3 State Championships in less than 10 years under his belt).

74 Do players routinely get injured by these guys?

My husband played football in high school... he was a tackle or end or something or other... the guy that most often got to flatten the quarterback.  Started.  Still says his favorite thing was the look of terror as the quarterback saw him coming.

I think their team was state champs (granted... it was North Dakota) more often than not.

And all at the grand total weight of a whopping 180 pounds.

I really don't know how this counts as not having chests.   Would a 130 pound guy be more of a guy if he went into a boxing ring with a 200 pound fellow six inches taller than he was and got the snot beat out of him?   I think that it's pretty courageous to box or play football with guys your own size and get the snot beat out of you.

A failure of manly chest hair would be if you only lined up against those who were smaller.

Then hung on his right ankle like a terrier for the entire game.  That big boy drug him all over the field and it was a slaughter.

Sorry, but I disagree on two counts.

First, although most leagues in my area have, for good reason, weight-to-age restrictions, many teams game the system.

My 9 year old grandson is the smallest member of his team and is fearless to a fault. Often, they play teams larger in size and weight and never complain. Last week, it would have been comical  for anyone looking at the disparity in size - they would have thought my grandson's team was playing a team two steps up. The final count was three of my grandson's team members being carried off the field - one on an ambulance stretcher. Not one of those fearless warriors ever complained - not once!

Which begs the questions raised about pro football - you take these kids, many from poor black commuities, and train tem all their lives to be agressive and beat the crap out of everyone. Then suddenly, they are expected to know that it just isn't right to beat up on their ladys?

Often, the adults have to come in and take over. I simply cannot agree with this man-up message - sorry.

79 If the tiny team coach was that concerned about significant physical injuries, he might have had a conference with the other coach to request some sort of alteration, a compromise of sorts--perhaps forfeiting the league game for an unofficial game of good sport tag football rather than simply forfeiting all together without any play.

As it was, the teaching moment and learning experience dealt cowardice without any effort to become sportsmen.

In politics, this episodic premise coincides with smart asses whose basis for upholding a constitutional matter is CONVENIENCE and COMFORT. In that, they are only willing to stake ground if the win is a given without much effort.

Then again, from their persepctive, a 30 minute drive IS halfway across the state.

83 So I guess we should eliminate classes of boxing, too, since it's all about fighting the good fight and "facing adversity." Or have girls face-off boys.

Sorry. As easy as it is to say "man up, you pussies," some differentials are just so heavily weighted that to guarantee injury of participants - especially for grade-school kids - is irresponsible. If you needed to fight a vastly superior enemy because your life was at stake, that's one thing. This is simply a game... a game where no one will learn what they didn't already know: the much heavier, faster mass will pulverize lumps of smaller organelles. Keep that lesson in the physics class and let the kids learn about competition on another day.

There's tough competition and then there's unreasonable competition. Perhaps this was a matchup that just went over the line.

Not unexpected in a parochial school in Woonsocket - a city that has been a French Canayjun enclave forever. So good for so long that they now attract the best and most aggressive talent of all backgrounds. Twenty Mount players drafted by the NHL. Current coach's record is something like 800 and 130. It used to be that if a Mount team dogged it in a game, even to show mercy, they would have an after game practice until they couldn't stand up. Don't know if that's still true.

I'm with Anonymous -- you don't jeopardize a bunch of high school age kids by throwing them out on the field knowing there's a good chance they could get seriously injured (or killed -- had a kid around here get clobbered by a much larger guy a few years back, snapped his neck; he didn't make it to the hospital).

This is a game, with underage kids who are out to learn the sport, perhaps to go on further with it, perhaps to just have it be a fond memory.  At the college level you are an adult and can play by big boy rules with your own decisions, at the age these kids are there are still adults in charge (hopefully).

If the other team showed no sign of taking it easy (winning but not slaughtering them, you know, showing some sportsmanship), then I don't blame the coaches a bit.  And that can happen: my cousins played for a local school -- they were huge, used to scrimage with a local college -- their coach (and sadly, a lot of the parents) thought it was just great if they sent an opposing player out on a stretcher each game, which means they encouraged it...which means the boys (being kids) did it.  Kind of a sick commentary on how we raise our kids if you ask me, and the furthest thing from true courage.

I graduated from this school way back in '76 and football wasn't it's strong point then. With a full slate of sports in the Fall - football, soccer, field hockey, and cross-country, at three levels of competition - "Thirds" (freshmen), JV, and Varsity, and only a student body of 365 there is not a deep well to draw from talent-wise. Even so we held our own in our league. I also seem to remember that they didn't do much, if any, recruiting. My graduating class was huge at 89 people.

I have to agree with  AnonymousDrivel and unknown jane that the school's first prioity is to prevent serious injury. Anyway, I'm sure the kids were willing to play the game -  @mn">D@mn adults sticking their noses in!

88 In other Liberal sporting news:

Donald Ghey coach of East Bay Vermont Sparkling Unicorns announced the cancellation of the much anticipated Musical Chairs showdown with their bitter rivals the Burlington Rainbows. Coach Ghey explained that there were only ten chairs available for the eight contestants in the match. "Last year there were two cases of bruised self esteem when players weren't able to immediately find seats when the music stopped." He explained "We didn't want another blood bath like that."
